Chris Dodd Pulls Out Of The Race
By Nicole Belle Thursday Jan 03, 2008 12:25pm
I can't tell you how bad I feel about the turnout for Sen. Chris Dodd. He has been such a champion of our values and his campaign and office have been the absolute best to work with.
It's a long video...but note that towards the end, Chris Dodd acknowledges we in the netroots and promises to continue to support us.
I will carry the determination and courage of this campaign, as well as the result-oriented leadership I offered, back to the important battles that need to be won for the future of our country.
As I have for 26 years, I intend to serve by building broad, bipartisan support for bold ideas rooted in Democratic principles, turning them into national policies.
I commit that the fights we've waged in this campaign will not end tonight, from our Constitution to reversing global warming.
Whether it is the dozens that worked the field...the hundreds that worked the phones...or the tens of thousands that took to the blogs, I will make sure that the voices that spoke with us in this campaign are not forgotten but amplified.
Not ignored - but championed.
Thank you, Sen. Dodd.

Here, Here!
Dodd is a gentlemen, and we will support him in his effort's to convince the traitorous wing of the Democratic party
that immunity is NOT an option.
One by one, we lose those that oppose the war...
Goodnight, sweet prince.
So much for idealism..
Got his email last night about this. Still bummed about it. Here is a man that truly can be counted on to do what is right.
This is so disappointing. I thought Dodd was far and away the best candidate. It's a shame he couldn't get any traction or attention. Too bad the media can't be bothered to cover more than 2 candidates at a time.
Too bad that person known as "uncommitted" was so close in votes to Dodd. I would have rather saw Hillary neck 'n neck with Uncommitted. What am I saying though. Shrubco was installed twice.
Well methinks we have a replacement for Reid at least.
Bravo Senator Dodd. Hopefully whomever gets the Democratic bid will understand the importance of the rule of law and will either tap Dodd as a V.P. running mate, or at the least, get rid of pelosi, Reid and or both and get Dodd into one of those positions so as to make a difference.
Dodds wife is a Mormon. At least they keep their personal faith out of their politics.
dodd's action in fighting the telecom amnesty bill will not be forgotten.
thank you senator dodd.
Dodd is a great American.
now if we could just get Obama, Clinton, Edwards and Dennis to drop out we would be doing ok
[chris. Please read the comment policy about name changing on this site-Sitemonitor]
Dodd's future is just begining,Harry and Nancy should start packing.
I think I agreed with Dodd on most issues more than any other candidate. The MSM is trying to freeze out Kucinich. I think Edwards is the least of the three evils, as it were, to remain.
The only thing I don't like about him is that he voted to impeach Clinton. Democrats need to start hanging together.
So long and thanks for all the Phish.
Ron Paul 4 Life @ 13:
Ron Paul definitely is a fierce defender of the Constitution. Which explains why it is difficult if not next to impossible fr him to get any air time in the Lame Stream Media® .
kaT @ 16:
They are, they're working together as cheerleaders for the Republicans.
ConcernedCanuck @ 7:
Yes, one of the things about Iowa that was very disappointing to me is to see how many of these crazy evangelical theocrats are still out there. They'd probably vote for W again if they could.
kaT @ 20:
Actually I think if it was Huck versus Bush they would vote for Huck. Huck doesn't have to play cowboy dress up on the ranch to convince the herds he's one of them.
Meet the new Majority Leader of the United States Senate: Chris Dodd.
Definately will not be the same as the old boss, Harry Reid. Reid can return to insignificance where he was found when he got tagged for the Minority Leadership position.
kaT @ 16:
So you'd support all Republican senators voting against conviction of BushCo, if we manage to get to that point? Werd.
Isn't it funny. His politics are so progressive in most respects. Shave his head and give him some tats and he might have taken the youth vote in Iowa.
Chris Dodd is a great man and senator.
His poor showing is not a reflection of him, but of the dimwits who voted in Iowa last night.
The Democratic Party voters continue to vote for pro-war and pro-corporation candidates and then cries when the same-old, same-old, nonsense, happens.
I have almost had it with the dimwits in the Democratic Party, who claim to "want change" yet vote for the most corporate candidates that the Democrats put up.
And, I am also tired of the dimwits who blame Nader for 2000 as well. Look at what you all did last night. The most corporate candidates did the best---Obama and Hillary Clinton.
If the Democratic Party does not vote for John Edwards, I want to hear no complaining about the same old corporate bending-over of the Democrats in the years to come. Edwards might not be perfect, but he is the only hope the Democratic Party has at this time, lest you all choose the GOP/Bush-lites, Barack "Fraud" Obama or Hillary "Sellout" Clinton.
Chris Dodd was a good choice. Its too bad one state like Iowa has so much influence in the presidential election. There is definitely something wrong with this picture.
Chris Dodd would have been my choice.
Jtraynor @ 12:
True that.
May I echo all the posts before this one in saying, I'm sad he did so bad, but I'm glad he's still in the Senate.
As he has proven, sometimes all you need is one guy like this around to stop something bad from passing.
I hope you read these blogs about you, Sen. Dodd. You need to know there are thousands of us out here thankful for you and your
BIG BRASS BALLS.
Absolute verification that style trumps substance. Dodd is ten 10 times the candidate of any of them in the field.
I'm putting my support behind John Edwards now, and I'll contribute to his campaign. Neither Clinton nor Obama will ever get a nickel from me. I trust them the least.
Dodd should be on the shortlist for the eventual nominees VP pick.
Looks like Dodd will have to be my write-in candidate. Screw the 'top-tier' dems or republicans or whatever they are.
Mr. XXXX @ 25:
At my precinct at least, he had close to 5% during Round One, so we supported him more than the national average.
It's the screwy "viability" thing that makes it look like he had no support here.
So please direct your comments at the whole country, thanks.
Exactly Miles Tougeaux.
The whisper campaign to get him as VP should start immediately.
We can always blame the media, or the weather, or whatever, but we must admit that our values fail to sell. As unbelievable and sobering as it might be, human rights, rule of law, accountability, rational thinking, and courage do not sell to the general electorate. Dodd ran a good campaign, offered an actionable progressive vision, relied on the netroots, and ultimately failed, whereas Obama, with a vapid program, or Clinton, with big donors money, fared much better.
What is says about America is not something most of us would rather hear. It's the reality nonetheless. The vast majority of Americans don't want to change the system. They want change without change, ideas without actions.
Thank you Mr. Dodd for standing up for the country. You certainly did your part.
kaT @ 16:
Feingold voted to impeach Clinton as well. These are man who don't view themselves as "Democrats" but rather as AMERICANS who fight for YOU and ME.
I admire that about Dodd and Feingold. I am a registered, proud Democrat but that doesn't mean I put my party above the law and the right moral action that needs to be taken into place even if it conflicts with my party.
Senator Dodd would make a great VP but we need him in the senate.
I talk with family members and they say "Chris who?" After decades of dedicate service in Congress, and one of the best liberal records of achievent we have, this man goes down with a couple of percent of the votes of the Iowa farmers to a man whose only significant achievements are in the realm of "charisma." I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the American electorate. But I am not surprised anymore. After all, they elected an incompetent fool to the presidency in 2004.
I have been impressed with him since he smacked down BillO.
JTM @ 30:
I love Iowans blaming this at the whole country :-P
We need Dodd in the Senate. Probably will bulk up the cred of one of the candidates though as vp.
Take Hillary back with you to the Hill. Remind her what leadership is. And TAKE HARRY'S JOB FROM HIM.
Edwards-President
Obama-Vice President
Hillary-Secretary of State
Bubba-Secretary of the Treasury
Clarke-Secretary of Defense
Paul Van Ripper-Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs
(Just goofing off)
really??? @ 37:
And I love people who can't read.
Our next GED session is Sunday afternoon. All are welcome.
Barak Obama: Brought to you by Golman-Sachs & J.P. Morgan-Chase. Dodd from Connecticut couldn't get those guys behind him?
A pity. What I'd like to see now is an Edwards / Dodd campaign. It's a longshot, though. The media and corporate interests seem to have already decided how this is all going to come out. This country's in a real mess and we need people like Chris Dodd.
Kyle @ 8:
I agree. He's definitely earned it.
Although any of the democrats would be better than the republicans Dodd's answer (or I should say dodge) to a question regarding the separation of church and state turned me off. It was from his website and he was answering a youtube asked question so it's not like he was on the spot fishing for a response..and that he felt like his non-answer was good enough to put out there just told me he didn't understand the issues involved. Granted I'm sure his judicial nominees would have been on par with the other democrats.
SteamRanger @ 42:
The media manipulation is going to be unbelievable. And wait till the the real mud slinging and dirty tricks begins.
Why is it that the "2nd-tier" candidates, (Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, etc.) invariably would make better presidents than the top contenders?
I am in awe of Senator Dodd and how he stood up when it seemed no one else would. However I won't miss those snippy emails from his campaign. Whoever was running that on the internet did a hell of an awful job.
I agree with others here, let Reid out to pasture and give Senator Dodd his position.
Our country needs new leadership in the congress and Dodd has shown he has what it takes to lead. I myself hope that like Howard Dean, Dodd will take his experience from a presidential run and make real change in our party and in the country. How about Majority Leader Chris Dodd?
Kudos to Chris Dodd for his great speeches and radio interviews the past year. Type his name in youtube for hours of goodness
As much as I hate to see this, we needed him to pull out and focus on keeping the current administration in check for the next 12 months!!! GOOD MOVE CHRIS!!!
Ron Paul 4 Life @ 13:
Fuck off Ronbot.
I'm happy to have Dodd in the Senate. Let's get him some real help. Beat the shit out of the republicans in November.
Brad @ 46:
They haven't succumbed to the “What have you done for me lately, Sunshine?” question when seeking backing from those who can further their causes.
I sent campaign donations to Senator Dodd and would do it again. I am so glad that we had him to filibuster that no good telecom bill.
THANK YOU SENATOR! WE WILL NOT FORGET YOU!
Keep up the good fight, Sen. Dodd.
We have your back.
"Senator Dodd" just doesn't sound right.
"Senate Majority Leader Dodd" rolls off the tongue just right though.
Whatever happened to Dean. He vanish off the political landscape of Earth?
Dems talking about why it cost $160 for a few days groceries?
"I can’t tell you how bad I feel about the turnout for Sen. Chris Dodd."
Chris Dodd was, by his words and his actions, the best prospect you had in my opinion to help you dig out of the mess you're in. However, I feel badly, not bad, about his pulling out.
I have always supported Dodd for prez, but felt it was diluted with Biden and Edwards vying for the same class of voters...exactly what the clintonistas wanted. Obama is the spoiler who will get just enough votes to deny Edwards the nomination and Hillary wins, setting up Giuliani or someother idiot to reign over the nazis.
Dodd=Class
Damn! I'm so sorry to read about this. Thank you Chris Dodd for everything you did to fight for we the common people.
Chris Dodd was my second choice. :(
I'm with you on this one, Nicole. I felt really badly for Chris Dodd's turnout, and vowed last night to call his office and say so, even though he is not my candidate. He is a classy, classy guy. If any of his workers are reading this, I want to underscore what an honorable man he is, and how much respect I have for him, and the work he does. He got caught in what will be seen within two years as a revolution from the bottom up. The Millenials (those born after 1982) are going to determine this race. The Millenials are fed up with Baby Boomer values. They perceive the Baby Boomers as squandering their future, ineffectual when confronted with global problems, selfish, unwilling to compromise, and refusing to recognize that we are communities that must work in harmony. They dont believe in the race card, and the ugly anti-immigration stance flies in the face of everything they've been taught about what it means to be American. Since the Millenials are the largest population group since the Baby Boomers, their presence and dismay at what their parents have done is about to come upon the US full bore. That's what Chris Dodd got caught in. I suspect Hillary will too. It's a new day.
J.H. @ 60:
Trust me, Obama is not the spoiler. Hillary is.
We need him in the senate. He's a critical figure therein.
Cay @ 48:
God! He would be soooo much better than Pelosi. He has the balls to stand up to Emanuel and Hoyer.
pissed off patricia @ 47:
I LIKED those emails. Short, to the point, and in my view, well-written. I always remarked that whoever wrote those understood the one-screen theory.
Very sad to see Dodd drop out. He was my first choice and I was hoping others would agree. What sickens me is that the MSM and the major blogs never gave Dodd any respect. It was only Obama and Hillary all the time and this sickens me.
Sad to see. It's obvious Iowa did not pay all that much attention to who he is and what he stood for, because of they did, he'd have done better than what he did last night.
Too bad.
hareli @ 67:
hareli @ 68:
Were those the emails from his Senate office or his House office?
I have a couple of things to say,
(1) I was so grateful to him for all that he did, and I was so appreciative of his efforts, I was sad to have missed his speech last night- So Nicole thank you for posting. And I did get an email from him during the night- it was beautiful, respectful, classy and so heartfelt....I did write him a thank you letter back, and I encourage all bloggers to do the same.
(2) WHO Handled his ONLINE load and letters, they did rock- i don 't know all, but I do know that the Baltimore Group Blog is one group that he adopted a long time ago, and they went on the road with them...I was so proud of them , I had had them on my blogroll since 2005- and that they got that got of Notice was astounding...( and so early on I figured out that Dodd was a Blogger- a real blogger)
(3) To tell the Truth some of those that closed up shop last night, I really appreciate and want them back in DC fighting for us There...we need them now more than ever...like Dodd and Biden...and to be honest we need Kucinich back in DC too...
This whole "screwy" caucus thing is just Instant Runoff Voting, guys. I really can't see how the entire coasts can go agog over IRV and yet completely brain-fart when it comes to IRV implemented in 'flyover hick country'.
Indeed, thank you, Senator Dodd.
Andrew @ 9:
I surely hope so. So far he's the only top national Democrat who delivers.
Thank you Senator for your defense of our rights and liberties. Keep up the fight to bring back Habeaus Corpus and our Fourth Amendment rights!!! YOU ROCK>
Dodd: If you want to make sure we're not ignored, you could begin impeachment proceedings...
We need to get Dodd into Harry Reid's job.
Kucinich to replace Nancy "off the table," and a real Att. General in the next administration (D), who will go after (and prosecute) ALL of the repuke criminals from the Bush/Cheney crime syndicate!
It's a damn shame. His campaign was the only I've donated to so far. Also, I read on his Wikipedia page that he doesn't plan to run for Senatorial re-election in 2010. Hopefully, it's just a legality step for his presidential bid like this webpage says:
Dodd: About His "Retirement" Announcement
Tequila @ 77:
Please. I beg you. Repeat after me: "Dodd is in the Senate, not the House... Dodd is in the Senate, not the House." Thanks.
Should we start a petition site for Chris Dodd for Senate leader?
I'm pretty tired of Reid's attitude as well.
I think America will really lose out by not having this man as President. I really do. I know he is not a "sexy" candidate for the 30 sec attention span voting class but this man was and is the real deal. Watching him stand up and fight made me proud to be an American again instead of constantly embarrassed by our president and my party for letting that president get away with whatever he wanted. This man is a true statesman and I will sign whatever, give money I don't really have, and speak where ever to support him in gaining the role of Majority Leader. This country needs a man like Dodd.
I'd rather have Senator Dodd in the Senate where he can protect the Constitution like he has done so well in recent days. What's more, he should replace the moronic Reid as majority leader and then force Leiberman off as head of ANY comte. in the Senate.
We're still with you Chris! And I think your leadership in the Senate is extremely important. Presidents need people like you to get their programs and policies into place.
And there's still that question of who will be the Democratic Veep.
JTM: He could still at least push for impeachment.
Dodd was absolutely Presidential from the beginning. I knew from day one he would make a fine President and know this today. I also knew he could never beat the Hillary machine and think that he may have known as well. He never got his message across to a broader audience like Hillary did. The media is so crucial in getting the message out and Hillary fever was evident in the media.
Thank you Senator Dodd, and your father was a champion of justice as well. Your family represents the best this country can offer.
Very disappointed... Thanks for everything you do, Sen. Dodd.
"...acknowledges we..." ? Aargh!
Just once in my life I would like to see all declared major candidates tough it out the entire primary season so those of us who don't live in Iowa or New Hampshire might actually get to vote our preferences.
facta non verba @ 88:
True. Course it seems like this primary has been going on FOREVER and Dodds got a job to do back in the senate. I appreciate his choice.
But it would be nice if the Democratic party would think about becoming... oh, how about DEMOCRATIC. Instead of ever more fascist. At this rate it will all be a formality and the delegates will all be chosen by the hidden powers of the party bureaucracy (just like 11 are now). Very Soviet -- screw the will of the people.
Goodbye, Mr. Bilderburg.
Good move for Dodd. He's clearly an asset in the senate, and now he can focus his energies where he can have an impact.
Chris Dodd was too good a candidate for a country that, face it, is overpopulated with intellectually lazy, media-engrossed cretins who don't want to hear or pay attention to where this country is going. The populace will slurp down whatever candidate corporate America selects for them.
In the end, unfortunately, we'll get the politicians we deserve.
Thanks, Mr. Dodd, for being one of the good ones...
Hat's off to you, Dodd. You do your father proud.
I am not a resident of Connecticut, but it makes me wonder how the citizens of Connecticut could have extreme good sense to elect Christopher Dodd as Senator and yet, have the absolute idiocy to vote for his Connecticut "collegue", Senator Foghorn "my nose is buried in Bush's ass" Lieberman.
Liarman is a turd. For Chrissakes Connecticut, PLEASE RECALL THIS JERK. Or, at least get pictures of him in an airport toilet tapping his foot....
I'm disappointed the Senator Dodd didn't receive more support. He certainly deserved it for the work he has done. One of my top two down. Dang! Senator Dodd, thank you!
