Bill O'Reilly showed the entire segment where he turns into a bully and gets all physical with an Obama staffer and then later calls him an SOB. BillO completely became unhinged. (rough transcript)
O'Reilly: Hey stop blocking the shot pal, you're blocking the shot. Don't block the shot, got it! No you're not, you're doing it on purpose. (Unhinged) Don't block the shot---got it! Don't block the shot. Get him out of here.

Clearly the guy blocked his camera dude's vision, but does that warrant O'Reilly to start shoving Nicholson? Marvin actually showed a ton of restraint because he easily could have responded after O'Reilly laid hands on him. Bill, this wasn't your studio---OK--and you don't get to attack people. It's a simple concept to grasp.
And everyone knows how your show sandbags people all the time, so if I was Obama's staffer, I wouldn't have given you any access either. Your past behavior precedes you. And you lied on FNS when you said you gently moved him out of the way and were cordial.
O’Reilly: Some guy comes over, he’s about six foot eight according to the press reports and he stands in front of the Factor camera. So I asked him fairly nicely, “you’re blocking our shot, sir, you need to move a little bit. …so I had to gently remove him from that position. No scuffle, I just moved him from the spot.. I might have called him an SOB, that’s possible, nothing more than that...
(I don't know if that was the Secret Service keeping BillO off of Marvin Nicholson.) Funny you should bring up the Constitution as a defense because if this had been a Republican event---the Secret Service would have handcuffed you----arrested you and carted you off to jail for assault. Who knows, they might have tazed you, bro!

Just a reminder that it is not unusual for security at an event to stand in front of an aggressive news camera which does not follow the rules and set up in an allowed location -- particularly if they did what O'Reilly did, which was insert himself past the barricades and in the exit-way for Obama.

I don't know the law in New Hampshire but if it's like California law, there is no statute of limitations for assault. So maybe after the election the guy can pursue this crime - which is what it is - a crime.

I think it speaks volumes about Obama as to how he delt with the situation. He turns around when shithead says something like "we,ve come a long ways to be here." He recognizes shithead, comes over and puts his hand on shithead's shoulder and explains to shithead that he has obligations that he must attend to, all the while shitead is talking, trying to ask a few questions. Obama showed cool control over the situation with an out of control asshole (shithead) and then continued on his way. Shithead can't any complaints about Obama's personal conduct and Obama delt and moved on, maintaining composure and control. Nice attributes in a POTUS IMO.

I think Bill'O knew what he was doing all along. He was trying to incite a reaction from the Obama campaign and hope that they would do something rash in the spur of the moment. The best thing that could happen is that he gets something to use against Obama for the entire campaign. The worst that could happen is that he proves himself to be a HEEEEE-UGE douchebag - which is hardly a revelation.

My take is O'Reilly is bull baiting, just dying for some underling or naife to get mad and react to his belligerance which would result in some huge scandal. It's ironic tho, that unlike some anonymous upstarts round the country that'd be tackled or tazed he gets special treatment, the loudmouth gets appeased with a handshake.
Isn't that assault? If he did that to me there would be serious issues. Who does he think he is? Unbelievable. O'Reilly actually airs the incident himself. I hope a prosecutor see it and throws the book at the S.O.B.

If someone could double check or confirm my observation on Fox News that would be great. So I wanted to see this clip and O'Reilly said he would show the whole thing unedited. So I actually forced myself to watch the show at 11pm. I'm pretty sure the video I saw on at 11pm was edited because I don't recall seeing O'Reilly push the guy in the clip. They conveniently cut that part out. Am I crazy or can anyone confirm that?

It's not that I'm against this story being brought up. I just think it would be better to categorize a blog like this under some 'nonsense' topic on the page and keep it and others like it separated from real important (and more boring) stuff like the political corruption, the war in Iraq and our democracy in peril. The latter are what interests me and what draws me to this fun website. I think that mashing them all together makes us lose sight of the differences between what''s actually important in the world and the things that only give us mind-gasmic pleasure ie,.. watching O'reilly's antics.
But whatever, it's John's page and he can dirty up with all the sensationalist falafel crap he wants. That seems to be what brings the crowd here.

Dave @ 135: There are few things more important than challenging and fact-checking the media, from Faux News to the legit outfits. That's one of the key things C&L's always done, often with video clips, which is really helpful. There are what, 10-20 posts a day? They're on a wide range of subjects. O'Reilly's still a major figure, blowhard though he is. He deserves to be exposed. I'm glad to see this longer clip for myself.
As to the clip itself, it cracks me up that he says "I had no CHOICE - but to defend the Constitution," followed by a smug look. Of course he had a choice! And he has a right to film if he's on public property, but what the aide did was legal as well. O'Reilly committed assault, but more damagingly (since I doubt charges will be filed), revealed himself once more as the classless ass and liar he is. Didn't O'Reilly show up late, too? It really seems he wanted to manufacture a scene to begin with, and he did, but it didn't play out as he wanted to. Funny how things work differently when he's not in his studio and can't bully other people quite so easily.

I'm thinking that as "fluffy" as this issue may seem to some people, it's important to note that not only does this man NOT take responsibility for his bad behavior, he is modeling it for other people as positive behavior. He's a public figure, and he has an impact, however disgusting, on public thinking.
I have to wonder whether ignoring people like O'Reilly and Coulter is the right tactic any more. I don't mean they should be censored, but perhaps they should be countered reasonably and lucidly more often.
