Tough Times For CNN
By Jamie Monday Jan 21, 2008 4:40pmOr what I like to call "self inflicted problems":
Within minutes of posting a story on CNN's homepage called "Gender or race: Black women voters face tough choices in South Carolina," readers reacted quickly and angrily.
Many took umbrage at the story's suggestion that black women voters face "a unique, and most unexpected dilemma" about voting their race or their gender.
CNN received dozens of e-mails shortly after posting the story, which focuses largely on conversations about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that a CNN reporter observed at a hair salon in South Carolina whose customers are predominantly African-American.
The story states: "For these women, a unique, and most unexpected dilemma, presents itself: Should they vote their race, or should they vote their gender?"
You can read the rest of the article here and the article they are referencing here.
I guess the "best political team on television" should think a little more before publishing articles.
Update from Blue Gal: With tongue firmly in cheek as usual, Princess Sparkle Pony points out that it would be so much easier for CNN if Oprah were running her own self.

So did John Edwards die or something? That would have been my complaint.
Also, first.
This makes it really hard for me as a white male. I'm just soooo confused.
So typical of CNN; seemingly ALWAYS wanting to play the "race card", and what a better
time to do so than on MLK Day and in S. Carolina. Piss off CNN, and as far as that goes,
ALL of the MSM can shut the f.... up.
holy crap,
well if everybody votes down race and sex lines... I guess I'm a de facto republican (rich, white, good looking man)
:D
CNN's as bad as the rest, they pretend their "news" isn't biased tripe, but it is.
There's nothing more annoying than the inane "Quick Vote" on the front page...always asking Americans the important questions about Brittany or American Idol....
giantpeach @ 4:
"Good looking" like Jabba the Hastert , Duke Cunningham , Fruity Rudy Drooliani ,Ron Paul , Frankenstein McLame , Mike Huckleberry way ?
You poor bastard............
CNN is a disgrace. Barely a notch below Faux News!
I know it's wishing too much, but why would one vote for a candidate just because he/she looks like you/talks like you/is attractive/would be fun to have a beer with????? It's upsetting that so much of this campaign is focused on the things I was told not to focus on when voting for my first grade class president.
"remember" the teacher said "this isn't a popularity contest".
it's sad that some people actually vote for someone because of their gender/race/or southern drawl.
Oh, the quagmire.
"What kind of 'bot' am I? Am I an automatically behaving, unthinking gynoid? Or Black-bot?"
It's gotta be one, or the other? Um-- "I have a dream?"
Got to remember, they are not a journalism outlet. They are a television program that sells advertising. The election cycle is like any other program: The network has a script and they're heading for the end of it.
And even though these voters probably WILL pick a candidate based on race, gender or something even stupider, you certainly do not want to point out that most voters go with gut decisions, then cherry pick info from the MSM to justify they choice they've already made.
I saw that story and was highly offended by it - as a white male. Wolf Blitzer is such a tool on CNN. He is so dumb and such a Hillary bitch that it is hard to stand sometimes. But yea, this story was downright offensive and inappropriate. I hope no woman or race votes just based on that. A woman should know that Hillary would sell them out for a tenth of a penny if it meant being electing. Obama is a man that will do more for woman than Hillary. HIllary is like death itself.
MCMetal @ 6:
CNN has deftly demonstrated just how far we haven't come since the days of MLK.
Well done, CNN!
giantpeach @ 4:
Good looking??? I refer you to the Pic of Thompson a couple of posts down./... ewwww

They are WORSE than Fox News in that they are FAILING to be as bad as Fox News. They are pathetic wannabes who are unable to be as vacuous as Fox News and end up looking worse for the effort.
Well, the last two presidential elections repukes had to decide whether to vote their heads, or their asses, we know how that worked out...

Female spelling of the name, correct? Black or white woman?
That's corporate media. It takes a fucking TON of STUPID people to make up corporate media.
However I did read something somewhere about a bunch of Oprah's fans being angry at her for betraying her 'gender' by supporting Obama. Yes, it's ironic.
"Jabba the Hastert "
Out of the park home run! Funniest thing I've read on here in months! I'm standing in my cubical applauding and the rest of the office thinks I'm nuts but dammit that was quality yucks. Well Done Mcmetal well done!
Who trust CNN?
What kind of person ignores all the candidates positions, and instead votes based on something superficial like race, gender, haircut? Uninformed voters, that's who... if this is now a dilemma for them, maybe it will cause them to actually pay a little bit of attention to the candidates' messages.
MSM = EVIL
CNN = MSN
thus for CNN = EVIL.
Cupid1d @ 20:
That bloated pig is such a piece of shit........He looks like if you poked him , cheese would start glopping out all over the place......
a glimpse of what CNN really thinks of the electorate and who'd have thunk it'd piss off the electorate?
Insulting people is the MSM's game.
Try a little more subtlety next time, CNN.
Stick to the "memes." Don't try to invent them on your lunch break.
Diggy G @ 22:
Yeah , but it's a bit presumptious , insensitive and racist for CNN to claim that is the criteria South Carlina's black voters are using to determine whom to vote for..........
giantpeach @ 12:
Ron Paul doesn't need a funny name , because his dull , glazed-over look says it all .....
He looks like an abused marionette.........
Bloody hell, Corporate News Nonsense!
So, do insane people face a unique choice between Giuliani's delusions and McCain's inability to distinguish right from wrong?
Diggy G @ 22:
Republicans.
Karen @ 29:
In your last line you use the term "republicans" and in the first "insane people". Just wondering, is that what they call an oxymoron?
MSM needs a new twist. Something like this.
AP Bush says economy wasn't supposed to collapse until June 09 under Dem leadership.
President GW Bush said in a press conference "our original plan was for economic collapse to occur in June of 2009. After me and my bud's we're comfortable in our new retirement digs. Not on January 22, 2008. However since we're still $7 Trillion richer I have to say your doing a good job Benny".
MCMetal @ 28:
I told you to stay OFF the computer after 6: O'Clock. Your sister has homework to do.
Karen @ 29:
Good point, Karen. The repugs selection criteria has been so skewed and non-issue oriented for so long that CNN and others believe this is how are leaders are supposed to be selected.
repugs = repug's
are = our
ugh.
Yellow Elephant Safari @ 30:
No. Though it could be redundancy in some contexts. ;)
The same story could be made for white southern women. Do I vote for Hillary because she's a woman or do I vote for Edwards because he's from the south? Maybe CNN is planning another story about the "woman" candidate and the "southern" candidate.
MCMetal @ 27:
Oh, definitely! Heck, the very fact that they're talking about politics a whole week (? or whatever) before the vote is probably a pretty good sign that they're going to base their vote on something more substantial.
It's crap like this that's destroying the political process in this country. There is no story here, and no journalism either. Disgusting
OT: Missouri Gov Matt Blunt resigns
Well hot damn, I better hope John Edwards wins, or I'll be forced to vote REPUBLICAN! D8
Well, the white woman who fixed my sandwich today at Safeway was complaining to me that there wasn't much of a choice: a woman or (sotto voce) a BLACK man. At least I was able to correct her about Obama being a Muslim. The first time I have found someone who believed that smear.
Bugs @ 32:
How in the hell did you tell me anything when I don't know who in the hell you are ?
Besides that , I care even less who you are , suckhole...........
I love how there were never any stories about whether hispanic women would chose Richardson or Clinton... this whole race controversy thing is a stupid construct - and the end result is that it gives Obama more airtime.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Republicans are rich white good looking men
(with the exception of Mitt Romney--what a reFUGlican!!)
pissed off patricia @ 36:
Doubt it, for CNN has constantly been into the "race card" issue and gender and/or
southern white male does not fit their mode of operations.
CCN has stooped to the right wing tactic of trying to suggest the US electorate is too racially divided to elect a progressive leader. For the 10**100 time: what liberal media?
bandit @ 8:
... Wait, you mean there's been a class election in the history of class elections that wasn't a popularity complex? Hot damn, sign me up for that school, I want to retake childhood.
Do I vote for a"

republican
democratic party member

Gee, it sure is tough being a white male in this situation. I guess I'll just have to vote for the most qualified candidate. I guess.
Merle @ 47:
School elections don't effect the economy , your standard of living , laws , abortion , etc etc etc .............
naschkatze @ 41:
Shockingly, there are a LOT of folks accepting that smear?
My girlfriends Mom in AZ got that spam, and we had to correct her.
And, she is a life long democrat?
Of course, white women over 70 are, in general, going to have
a lot of problem with a black man in the WH.
Hillary's most solid block is non-college educated women
over 55.....
But, here's the stickler in this case.
My girl friends mom says she is probably going to
vote for McCain in the general, as she think Hillary
should have divorced Bill for his dalliances!
What a scream.....

CNN is so lame. NPR had covered this story when the primaries started. At least NPR had the sensitivity to qualify the issues (paraphrasing):
An interesting issue arises involving.... for Female Black Democratic Voters in deciding a vote. They vote their conscience mitigating factors make it messy. What do they tell their kids when they grow up:
[queue interviewee soundbite]
Inteviewee: I had the chance to vote for the first viable black or female candidate and didn't but how do I explain that to my 4 yo when they grow up?
So yeah, not only is CNN late in covering this story, but they do with such inept sensitivity that they just step on everyone's toes. The article reads that "Black women can/will only vote for Obama or Hillary". Talk about bad journalism. Heh. CNN I hope you enjoy toe jam in your mouth, you losers.
That's how far backwards this country has gone in the past 8 years. That CNN could be perfectly comfortable implying that black women are that ignorant.
Filthy Harry @ 10:
Yep. Time-honored principle of advertising: get people to see any situation as a problem that can be solved by buying something.
I'll never forget what Reuven Frank, one time head of NBC News said: you think viewers are the customers in broadcasting? They're the product-- they're what broadcasters deliver. Advertisers are the customers.
WashStateBlue @ 51:

Blue Lensman @ 60:
I said "idiots" , not those in a walking coma........

you just described the mentality of most americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doggiebobo @ 59:
Actually, my girlfriend is one of the most progressive people I know,
single mom, raised two kids, works for a non-profit on Women's
Health Care Issues. (yeah, you should hear some of the stories
of dealing with the Bush admins' Religious nutbars in Reproductive
Issues....)
Her mom is just an older German Catholic woman, and VERY prissy
on morals.
We have been living together for over 3 years, but mom still
"pretends" that we don't.
What can you do? She was raised in a different time...
Merle @ 47:
Let's be clear.....that's what the teacher said, and what I remember to this day. At the time I vote for the cute little girl with the pigtails that I liked to pull on. I've since grown up and none of the candidates have pigtails anyway....

Hardly retated. She lived through post depression America, her husband was wounded in WWII. The yraised three kids, all they put through college
(neither of them had gone past highschool.)
They were both Lifelong Democrats, but STRICT Catholics.
You're probably young, but, we whose parents are of a much
older generation hardly call them retarded, just cause they
old on to beliefs from a different time.
You know, stories like this make me believe in America again. Americans are smarter than the media. They hate being put in a box based on cosmetic details or genitals or what they do with those genitals in the privacy of their own home. Go America. We can be a better place. Leslie "Wolf" Blitzter, you are a tool.
I’ve since grown up and none of the candidates have pigtails anyway….
I think there is a picture someplace of Rudy in drag with a blonde wig
and pigtails.....
Talk about spitting on MLK's grave by making this about someone's race or sex instead of the issues. Diversity isn't in hormones or skin color, it's the ideas someone has, and we're no closer to embracing diversity in the white house than we were 4 years ago.
Frelling People Magazine frelling journalism. 'Cuz y'know, NObody would EVER THINK of voting for someone who isn't a member of their own race or gender!!! THAT would be unTHINKable!!!
What a bunch of frelling maroons.
Oh, I see. So these black women can only vote on these two criteria, not on the issues or voting records or experience or commonalities with a given candidate....
CNN:
Just get lost.
RE: "What kind of person ignores all the candidates positions, and instead votes based on something superficial like race, gender, haircut?"
Unfortunately, mostly everyone.
Let's not forget people voted for President Braindead because they felt they could chug a cold one with him.
Breck girl haircut ring a bell?
Dukakis looking goofy in a tank?
WashStateBlue @ 68:
My FATHER FOUGHT IN WWII ; don't try to lecture me on the idiocy your girlfriend's mom is exhibiting and then attempt to fob it off on her being a "strict Catholic".
Being a "strict Catholic" gives you an out for being intentionally ignorant ?
Religious faith is a "belief" (and a silly one , imo) ; voting for Frankenstein McLame over Hillary with the assertion that it's because of Ms Clinton's unwillingness to divorce Bill , while McLame's 1st wife raised their kids alone and was rewarded with a divorce proceeding so that the loser could re-marry a younger , prettier and wealthier woman , has nothing to do with anything other than being wilfully ignorant and foolish.................
My father was older than your girlfriend's old lady and wouldn't make that type of distinction or assessment , based upon some silly belief from a different time.
Get a clue ; or better yet , get your girlfriend's mother one.............
McMetal...
Wow, what a holier then thou response?
Yes, we informed her of McCain dumpy his first wife
for the rich second one...
Cool out, dude, you seem a little worked up?
If everyone dumped their relationships because of disfuctional
families, there would be a lot more single people in the US!
I wonder if you're one of
I heard this on the radio this afternoon. Randi Rhodes I think....
If you applied the same criteria to McCain and Romney. Older than dirt Mormons have a real quandary on their hands.
I guess as a hermaphroditic, albino quadruple amputee, I'm out of luck.
Just because CNN got criticism doesn't mean they weren't right...
WashStateBlue @ 76:
Atta boy WashStateBlue. I initially thought McMetal's initial response was a "snark"
(you know, trying to jive w/you); but I can see that he is the one in need of help
w/communications and relationships. At least that seems to be the case from his
most recent reply. Hang in there and don't let some blogger's comments bother
you.
Some people vote based on what we may think are silly reasons - like race, gender, looks, religion, etc... they do that because issues don't matter enough during the primary dog and pony show - really how different are the top canidates. In that CNN article the shop owner even said she would vote for Hillary because she was a woman.
The press feeds on that to drum up "drama" because issues are boring.
WashStateBlue @ 76:
My father's achievements/behavior doesn't make me "holier" .........They are about him , not me.
And why would a woman who has lived through McLame's entire Senatorial career need to be "told" anything about him ?
She can make a judgement on Ms Clinton and her keeping her marriage together based upon the MSM and stories she's read/heard about , yet McLame gets a pass ?
Why ? Because she wasn't spoon-fed info on him ?
What an intellectually lazy person to go about things in that manner.
BTW
When did I even insinuate what you should do in/with your stupid relationship ?
I give a shit as much about your relationship as I do about your stupid statement of my being "worked up" ; neither means jack shit to me..........And don't bother "wondering" ; that hasn't come to pass , and you are no one who is in a position to be judging others.
[Please take it down a notch. No need to start flaming other commentors. Site Monitor]
Doug @ 81:
Exactly. Many blacks are voting for Obama because he's black. Many women are voting for Hillary because she's a woman. Thus, a black woman is in a bit of a predicament. I heard Gene Robinson say that Andrew Young is getting a lot of heat from fellow blacks because he's supporting Hillary instead of Obama.
To ignore these "inconvenient truths" is not helpful.
CNN has been playing the race and gender card throughout the
entire elections and it's finally catching up with them. The debate
last night was another perfect example of their sickening way
of doing just that. CNN is as big of a joke as FixedNooz.
Doug @ 81:
It just doesn't seem like such a big deal to me. Probably the people who actually THINK about the issues are the ones who were offended. But a good percentage of Americans vote based on one issue or vote based on odd personal biases. I had a friend who just thought Kerry and Gore had such terrible speaking skills that that was her reason to vote republican!! How idiotic.
I thought it was funny when my son told me one of his friends said, "So, Oprah went black instead of woman." So, a college student thought of it before CNN brought it up. What's the big deal?
Doggiebobo @ 80:
Yet you're the one who felt compelled to stupidly dole out "advice" to WashStateBlue about hoping he isn't serious about his current relationship ; and he attempted to brand me with that distinction.
Amazing how you believe yourself to be so gifted as to determine what others are and/or need over the internet , and what their psychological make-up is.
Congrats to you , Dr Frist of the internet ; or shall we simply refer to you as Sigmund Fraud ?
Ali @ 85:
1. Some people aren't doing that. They are supporting candidates based upon their positions on the issues. Thus, they don't like being lumped in with the folks in #2.
2. Some people don't like to be reminded or can't admit to themselves that they are voting for a candidate simply because the candidate looks like them.
MCMetal @ 86:
You are getting a bit too deep for me. I intended, and thought, that my comments
to WashStateBlue relating to his realtionship w/his girlfriend would be taken as a joke/snark/fun; not anything of a meddling/interfering nature amd certainly not
judgemental. So as the site monitor has expressed(more or less), "let's cool it."
As if voting for the candidate they thought the most qualified was beyond them??? The MSM is in deep trouble after 7+ years of bushco...
Doggiebobo @ 88:
Well , obviously you were wrong ..........And if that were true , why were you cheering on WashStateBlue after reading his remarks ?
I don't buy that .......But I don't give a crap enough.
I'm willing to listen to the site monitor.
The only answer for Edwards is to "come out" and say He's gay? Might push Him right up there.
pissed off patricia @ 36:
Edwards tried to play that card last nite, that he's the Southern candidate. While Hillary & Barack were being tagged with "woman" & "black man," he laid it down.
CNN isn't playing cards any more than MSNBC does with Tweety, Timmey, Tucker & the MoJo bunch. Both networks should be ashamed of themselves.
Mebbe this is aaaaall a case of classic projection by the conservative repug base (yes, you too, CNN):
They see themselves as people who only vote for selfish, myopic, conniving white men, in other words: they don't think or really examine the candidate (and get what they deserve). So the voters on the Dem side can only do the same?
Ah hah!
Oh, for fuck sakes. How ass-backwards can "the most trusted name in news" be?
Swashbuckler @ 79:
No, but the fact that they weren't right seems to explain why they got criticism.
LPD @ 92:
Maybe he should run as the "smart candidate". He'd have that demographic totally monopolized.
Bonkers @ 73:
THANK YOU YOU SAID IT BETTER THAN I COULD
WashStateBlue @ 65:
My parents were raised in a different time, too. They are Catholic. They believe divorce is shameful in the eyes of the Church, no matter the reason. Maybe German Catholics are different, I don't know. My mother is Italian, and Catholic to the marrow of her bones. Divorce would be unthinkable. Too bad I had to disappoint her by getting divorced, heh.
Can you even imagine the sh*tstorm if Hillary had divorced Bill? She'd be accused of being a quitter, looking for the easy way out, a bad mother for splitting up the family, and of course the old canard that if only she'd "taken care of him" that he wouldn't have strayed. It would have been a serious sociopolitical upheaval for the country, too. Your girlfriend's mother needs to think seriously about how difficult it is to divorce someone after many years of marriage because of dalliances or infidelity, but other than that, it sounds like she passed along some terrific traits to your girlfriend :)
cg @ 95:
But they WERE right...
Why aren't white men like me who've ruled out John Edwards similarly conflicted? Gee, should I vote based on my race (HRC), or my gender (Obama)? What a terrible dilemma! Hmmm... perhaps I should vote based on issues, or for the human being I believe will make the best President? Does CNN think I should make my choice based on either of those factors? Nahhh, that doesn't fit their narrative, so never mind.
What pinheads!
I watched CNN for the first time in a long, long time tonight while on the the treadmill. My God it is insufferable. I find it frightening that people watch this stuff and consider themselves informed. Here's the run down of what I saw:
Hillary vs. Obama drama no policy discussion.
No mention of Edwards.
Annoyed Sighs and harrumphes from "the cynic", jack Cafferty.
brief banter with "the straight man", wolf blitzer
quick video cuts and two and three word quotes - 0 context - all heightening "THE FEUD"
commercial break with osteoporosis drug and some other drug I can't remember
back to wolf - launches into protracted fluff piece about older statesmen dozing off
lou dobbs - arrogant douche can't get a sentence out without injecting unqualified invective about "the candidates"
after an hour of this shit and I nearly grabbed my tv and tossed it out the farking window.
No real discussion of the issues or policy. Thinly veiled opinion pieces disguised as "news" reporting.
It felt like a Fox news wannabe.
hotshot @ 21:
tarzan trust cnn! tarzan no trust fox!
Yes, I hate that CNN did this report. But I would say that the people they interviewed represented average voters. We would like to think that every American voter has done his or her homework, but it is not true.
I recently visited a sister and her husband. The conversation turned to which candidate we were supporting. When she and her husband said they were voting for Candidate X, I was a little surprised. I asked if they knew X's record and X's position. They knew nothing about either, but they still liked this candidate for reasons they couldn't explain. What you have to understand is that these are people who are highly educated with international careers.
Unfortunately, most of the electorate will base their votes on gut feelings, and those feeling often involve who has the best hair, or which candidate they would want to share beers with.
What CNN showed was how shallow the the criteria most of the electorate uses in picking a candidate. Instead of being mad at CNN, we should be mad at an electorate which is so shallow.
face it. national enquirer still outsells wapo. until we start turning off train wrecks fires and helicopter chases, we'll only get more.
Don't any of these people have any brains? Who's running the show over there and how'd they get out of their cage?
They deserve all the heat they're taking over this really stupid article.
*
I've talked to some AA women and many feel that way. Stop being so scared of saying what is true. CNN is hated by the obama freaks because every now and then they report the truth about race in this election. Obama does play the race card. have you seen how his manner of speaking has changed now that he is pandering to the black community. Even his wife started speaking different. she says ain't when she is speaking to AA and aren't when she speaks to white folks.
.
Since when is SEXISM and RACISM an issue?
Why do black women even have to look at this issue so weighted?
White men telling black women to, "be afraid, question it, your sex and race. Which matter more? I'll tell ya when you get it right."
Black women need to be asking these white men, "What do you vote, your sex or race... or both?"
.
I hate this old idea that always get trotted out that black people, when offered a black candidate, will automatically vote for that candidate.
Because black people won't make a reasoned, intelligent decision based on who they believe is best qualified for the presidency, right? And white people will?
What a ridiculous, racist view! It makes me sick.
Con-servative
News
Network
The funniest, yet most disturbing part of this story is that LOTS of people will actually vote based on gender or race... not the issues. The reason for this is because lots of voters are uninformed so they only have trivial things like personality, gender, or race to base their decision on... but the informed already knew this.
I suggest that people who are convinced "women vote primarily on gender" and "non-Caucasians vote primarily on race" are blissfully ignorant of their own misogyny and/or racism.
CNN can suck it. Anytime I post a pro-Hillary comment, or correct them
in their reporting, they refuse to post it. I do not use inappropriate language; either way they seem to be getting more sensational just as FOX news is.
NO THANK YOU CNN...
Alot of whites are voting for Obama...but Obama had to raise the race card to
rally alot of black folk.
Interesting.
CNN=FOX=MSNBC=Corporate owned propaganda outlets. This isn't about news or information or issues. It's about distractions, entertainment and making billions for the owners of these media.
As for voting, here's a novel idea; vote the issues.
more at my blog...
voting with your brain is what you should be doning...
Like asking why it's about Clinton and Obama. Why them? What deal did them make? Cause Kusinch, and Edwards have much more astute moral character than Clinton ESPECIALLY.
Over 50% of the voters in South Carolina are WHITE! Which means that 25% or more are WHITE MALES! Yet none of these candidates, nor the media, nor the blogs, seem to give a shit about this VERY large segment of the voting public.
CNN has been, and will continue to be, freakishly pathetic.
I am so sick of Wolf Blitzer putting his Washington insider spin on everything he does.
