Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) will announce Wednesday that he will not seek reelection to the House, according to a Republican source with knowledge of his decision.
Davis is the fifth House Republican in the last week to announce that he will not run for reelection, joining Reps. James Walsh (N.Y.), Dave Weldon (Fla.), Kenny Hulshof (Mo.) and Ron Lewis (Ky.). There are now 28 House GOPers vacating their seats. Read on...
Tom "Doobie Brothers" Davis will most likely spend more time with his family - his lobbying family, that is. The writing is on the wall and the rats are opting out of public life for big bucks while they still can. It's all about cash and saving face -- don't let the door hit you on the way out...

The money train to Lobbyland leaves the station...Again.
Probably another one hiding some dirty secret.
They know they can't win in November.

They think if they get out now, they may get passed over when the indictments come out. I hope not.
Good, the more the merrier!
Good riddance!
It wasn't just the lucrative job offers
Davis probably would have lost his seat this time out anyway. His district was only R+1 last presidential cycle. But since 2004 the district's gotten loads of immigrants in, the now former Senator Allen made his Macaca remark, and the state GOP embraced immigrant bashing as their centerpiece issue for the just-concluded state elections in 2007. His wife lost her state Senate seat, in a district that is a subset of Davis's, by double digits in that election despite his best efforts on her behalf. Then Leslie Byrne announced for the seat on our side, and more recently the chairman of the county board of supervisors, who would have been even more likely to bury Davis if he hadn't chosen the better part of valor. Perhaps the recent difficulty getting the Dulles Metro line past the FTA was the straw that broke the camel's back, though perhaps it was the other way around, and the administration felt emboldened to stiff the project now that it knew it no longer had to give it to Davis to help him keep his seat.
How many of these vipers leaving the nest will be replaced by Dems? Anybody keeping count?
Every Republican or dampocrat who voted to go to war in Afganistan or Iraq [deleted - please don't advocate violence here.] selling out thier oblication of oversight. The entire world is questioning how a nation would go to war with out any evidence.
this is just what you would expect of the repugs since they are all
part of the gop political mafia. steal from the American Treasury
while in office and then RAPE the American Treasury when they
abandon ship.
it's nice at least that these idiots are leaving the offices where they have caused so much harm, but they will never have real integrity until they denounce the party they were cheating and stealing and lying for. Oh and the part about becoming lobbyists after they leave office is a little shady too, they need to stop that...but since Republicans are godless greedy bigoted nincompoops you will never see them do the right thing.
Rush to War @ 8:
are you looking thru you reichwing glass again?
Weren't Tom Davis and Al Franken a comedy team once?
The GOP's Operation Back Away from the Flaming Turd is under way.
They are going to leave someone saddled with this flaming shitpile and stand on the sidelines shrieking like Donald Sutherland at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Count on it.

Well the stars seem to be aligning for a possible Democrat takeover, I am talking top to bottom house cleaning. But for some reason, maybe it's because I don't want to get myself to amped on the idea of a Democrat monopoly, I find myself increasingly nervous that we Dems. will fins another way to sabotage something that is clearly ours for the taking. A habit that we seem to have developed over the past 10-15 years, and arguably longer back then that.
I guess I really don't have a point other then to air out my wishes, or should I say my prayers, that the Dems. can keep it together and stay focused on the right targets. If we can do that we are talking about sweet victory party across the country. But if we don't, think back to the feeling you in your stomach Nov. 3rd 2004 and magnify it 10x. The result is what we will have to look forward if we allow the wheels to come off.

First thing I thought when I saw this post. Ya beat me to it, ysbaddaden!
GSD @ 13:
you just made me wet my pants.....you are too funny!
GSD @ 13:
Oh that's good. Thanks for the first good laugh I've had today.
Fairfax county is primed to put a Dem in his seat... Northern Virginia is not part of the South, let's say....
From what I've heard Democrats already have a big advantage in the '08 elections regarding the number of seats up for re-election/incumbents etc. This news must just be tipping that advantage our way even more. Let's focus on all the races coming up in '08 and not just the Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. :)
I used to live in his district. I'm glad that guy is gone. I couldn't stand him, but no serious democrat ever challenged him.
The Republican Party is headed the way of the Whigs. I guess I do owe George Bush thanks after all.
Orangutan. @ 19:
I know that this may not be as exciting as the presidential elections but, it is as important to have a veto proof majority in the House and Senate. We have to be focused on the whole picture if we want restore our democracy.
I personally know Tom Davis, not very close, but I've had him over for dinner. Nice guy, had presidential aspirations, but he realized that his district was becoming more and more blue. I don't agree with his politics, but it was a way for him to save face by going out on his own terms and not losing a re-election bid. Unlikely to become a lobbyist. Also was on the Colbert Report on one of those congressional district segments, so he doesn't lack a sense of humor.
The rats are jumping ship!
Having sat through too many hearings listening to "nice guy" Davis I can only say he caomes across as a disgusting, delusional, smarmy scumbag who could care less about anything past his own partisan nose. Thank God he's going!
Will there be enough jobs for the K street rats? What will they do? Lobby the minority?
AN @ 23:
I live in Prince William County (just south of Fairfax County) and am a constituent of Davis'. We're still rather purpleish in our part of Davis' district and I think he'd still carry PWC. The scuttlebutt for several months has been that Davis would not run for his old seat and he WOULD become a lobbyist -- he needs the funds.
pol @ 26:
makes me wonder about the corruption that went on under the nek'd emperor's reign of failure. If Davis is bailing it's NOT because he wants to save face. It's because he can't make as much money from kick backs-- now that the dems control -- as he made under bush-wacko.
I feel a change in the winds. Davis isn't going to be the last rat jumping ship. This is the domino effect. How these people live with themselves. After all that they have done to destroy this country.
P.D. @ 28:
Exactly! After they RUINED the econmy, the military, civil society, and foriegn relations they jump ship and run like the rats they are. They can't fix the mess they've made!
Just like afte the Rupublicans ran the country into the Great Depression in the 20s and 30s, once again the democrats have to come in and save the country.
Why do we keep allowing these greedy bastards to get a hold of the Ship of State?
they arent leaving cuz they cant win....incumbents rarely lose
they are leaving cuz there is nothing left to steal
we are all so fucked...its not funny
One of the most corrupt, nasty, partisan assholes ever to sit in the house. So long prick, we'll keep a jail cell warm for ya!
EMPY @ 31:
I only wish that were true. Unfortunately they are all going to leave and get away scott free... when they should all be in jail for the ruination of this country!
I wonder what kind of nasty shit this asshole is running from?
Isn't Davis married to a woman who recently lost her reelection?
I don't know anything personally about the man, including any corruption or lack thereof. But on a purely political level, retiring his seat is a VERY smart move. Especially since he's probably not done with politics.
Reportedly, he's was John Warner's top pick to fill the Senate seat Warner is vacating. The VA Republican party quickly moved against Davis by choosing a caucus instead of a primary. The party effectively gifted the nomination to Gilmore.
Unlike many of the retiring Republicans, I suspect we haven't seen the last of Davis. My take is that he's eyeing the Virginia Governor's mansion or perhaps a run for Senate in 5 years. He may even move to a redder part of the state to run for the House again. But he'd have absolutely no political future if he lost the battle for his long-held house seat.
For him, it would have been a VERY tough battle. The truth is that his district IS moving blue. In fact, his wife just got defeated in that very same district. He certainly couldn't have missed the massive Democratic turnout at the half dozen primaries we've had so far. Virginia is already a purple state, if there is a large Democratic turnout for the Presidential election, he had to know the odds of holding his seat would be slim to none.
Any intelligent politician with further political aspirations would have done the same as he. I don't know if he's corrupt or not, but he's obviously not stupid. He would have been toast in the fall.
Still, the slogan of "run away, run away, fight again another day" isn't exactly a ringing political endorsement.
That would be the revolving door, and it won't be hitting Tom. The only thing Tom will be hitting is a tightly rolled $20 bill and some DC hookers while he spreads the corporate wealth with the rest of his repug friends in the Senate and House.
More Bush produced republican roadkill on the side of the political highway. Priceless.
Now, if we could only elect some real democrats who support LIBERAL policies. Time to make "conservative" the most filthy, dispicable, detested word in the english language.
So much for our spreading Democracy
We're spreading something
Butt it ain't Democracy.
Sorry, last comment was for the one where the Saudi gets the death sentence for exercising his "right to speak."
Andy K @ 15:
Then you take the ball peen hammer, and slam it into your temple...whoa...that can hurt!
Well, he and his worthless wife, Jeanmarie Devolites Davis, can join forces on K Street - Virginia voters rejected her, too, last Fall, when she ran for state office.
Fairfax County is ripe for a progressive Democrats - George Mason University and Ed Meese, not withstanding.
Ayyyyeeee maties.....thar mybe a starm abrewin on the horizon. Maybe it's better to jump ship than to end up in the bilge?
