What's On Your Ipod?
By Nicole Belle Tuesday Feb 26, 2008 1:16pmMother Jones has "The Torture Playlist" (h/t MBH)
Music has been used in American military prisons and on bases to induce sleep deprivation, "prolong capture shock," disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams.

Barney?
omg
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
'Fuck Your God' is a pretty good track. The guys who made it are assholes though.
Hahahah! RRRRRAAAAARRRRRRHHHGGHGHGHGGHH! YAYAAYALRRRRRRRHHAAFFHFGGHGHGLG!!!!!
Jumpin jesus on a pogo stick. That's some list. I actually listen to a couple of those songs. Not Raspberry Beret though. That's torture.
Awesome! It defaults to "play"! I can't stop it! To paraphrase any ole 'publican: "It's like torture listening to it!"
lol at 'White America' and 'Born in the USA'. great songs, always misused.
You know how some pop songs later become jazz standards?
These aren't those songs.
Holy Mother of God, that stuff is assaultive.
My GOD! Now THAT is torture forcing people to listen to Eminem!!! Ahhhhhhhh!!! Michael Jackson wants to be white and Eminem wants to be black. Right f'cked in the head.
Where's "heard it from a friend" by REO Speedwagon? I'd cave in after listening to about 30 seconds of that song.
Yes I was going to say the same thing about Born in the USA...last I checked its very anti-war, and Bruce Springsteen doesn't like Bush too much
Here's Bush's Secret iPod Playlist.
"American Pie"? God no.
You need to drop the "auto-play" on this embed. NSFW!
Calling "Fuck Your God" and "Die MF Die" music is extremely generous. I'd have to be detained to listen to Binge-Purge Metal, or whatever they call dry-heaving to convulsed guitar riffs.
.
How do I turn off the AUTO-PLAY?
Why Nicole, why must you torture us with this music auto-play every time I visit until this thread turns a page? WHY...?
Ouch... my ears....
.
If they played anything by Celine Dion, I think that would work. It sure would work on me if I were captured. I would spill all the beans.
What? "It's a Small World" didn't make the list? Disney wanted too much for the licensing, eh?
The Children's Television Workshop will be sic-ing someone over the use of the Sesame Street Theme song.
Good application of the 'Meow Mix' song, though.
That playlist needs more country and Xtian crap.
It keeps playing every time you enter Crooks and Liars. That's kind of funny.
The Barney theme song is clearly the most terrifying. I can't take 10 seconds of that.
That's Priceless
What shitbags.
I can see where some of these songs are torture indeed (Barney and Eminem, for starters). Staying Alive only applies if you're hearing one of Ted Striker's war stories...
Oh yeah, or "sometimes when we touch" by Dan Hill. That song was banned by the Geneva Convention I think.
I'd like to stay to comment with you guys
But the music ... Die mutherf0ckers die? and it wont stop. think I'll go shoot the neighbors dog.
What, no chuck mangione?
I'm surprised there isn't any Diamanda Galas.
this is too frigging annoying! the "music" starts automatically when the page comes up ... thank god it stopped when i came to comments but i won't be able to read the rest of today's c&l because it will start again.
please ... make it stop!
Alright ... I'm outta here and outta HEAR ....!!!
jeez, the default is to play, it took me almost the length of the first song to find find WTF was playing. That was torture enough for me ..
More Christian terrorism. Isn't religion just wonderful?
There is something ironic about using Rage Against the Machine to further a capitalist agenda.
Oh but, there is also something ironic about using torture to 'defend' our constitution.
STOP TORTURE MEOW!
The autoplay has been turned off, sorry for the problem!
Imagine my shock when XCORE METAL ripped out of my speakers in my cubicle.
I understand the irony that the detainees can't escape it, and when we visit the site, neither can we (unless we frantically click stop on every page load), but are we sure it's a good idea to have 'Fuck Your God' auto-play EVERY time someone loads the site until it finally drops off the first page?
That's gonna go way past obnoxious real fast.
I like Deicide. Their older stuff was better. Maybe they should try some Norwegian Black Metal.
Logan Murphy @ 35:
Comment rescinded.
My ears thank you. Profusely.
those songs are good but there is some real torturous singing out there that is so sadistic it will make anyone cry uncle. Listening to the "Four Republican Senators" (I.E. Trent Lott, Larry Craig, etc.)below sing Elvira did it for me.
http://www.crooksandliars.com/index.php?s=trent+lott
It's actually not that bad of a list of songs.
Ok first of all its just wrong! WRONG I tell you! Using Hells Bells like that is criminal. However, I'm pretty sure using the Barney theme song is against the Geneva Conventions.
What's wrong with Prince?
Drowning Pool is quite anti-O'Reilly. Not a big fan of their music, but they really do support the troops.
Obviously any song can be used for sleep deprivation if it is played loud enough. I imagine they could have even used Enya on full blast to keep people awake and crazy.
Agree that Deicide's material is generally pretty good. I prefer Morbid Angel and Grave, but generally like most extreme death / grindcore. On the other hand, I totally did Arabic pop music, Rai, and most recently Bongo Flavah from Tanzania.
What I consider torture is most contemporary Country music and almost everything on Top 40 radio. However, love Amy Winehouse.
Kenny G-I'll fuckin talk!!!!
I wanted to read C and L, but as the page loaded I, and unfortunately my co-workers, were treated to something that is not appreciated in this work space. They have graciously allowed me to read to my heart's content on my break. But the tunes were not welcome.
Any way Nicole that we could read C and L and "What's on your iPod" without having to listen to the tunes?
I'll stay away for 24 hour, maybe it'll roll off to the archive by then.
FP
If they really want to harm the psyche of the detainees they should play Nickelback on repeat.
Oh, and ALL contemporary Christian pop crap. Now that would make me slit my wrists if forced to endure it for more than a nanosecond. Amy Grant would make me confess to anything just to make it stop.
12 seconds of the Red Hot Chili Peppers would break me.
Campy@10
Thanks a lot. F***ing REO speedwagon! I suggest Mr. Roboto
Ironic that so many of the songs on this list seems to have been chosen for either their aggressive rhythm or the use of the word "America" in the lyrics, yet many of them have lyrics which actually oppose the hegemonic pseudo-Christian corporate empire these torturers are enforcing. Especially noteworthy for this is the Rage song. Suddenly I understand how Soviet censors could have missed so much subversive literature. I guess its the Meow Mix jingle that is the real torture...perhaps they should try playing the "Head On" advert over and over again if they truly want to make this psychological warfare.
Are these overdubbed in the languages in which our captive audiences converse?? If not, the lyrical messages of "Fuck Your God" and "White America" might be lost on them. Just wondering...
Of course, the Barney theme is offensive to anyone, regardless of tongue...
I always keep my speakers on mute until I want to hear something. The first time I visited this post I wondered why everyone was complaining about music. I didn't hear anything. So I left and did something else and it hit me, your speakers are on mute, idiot. Then I took my speakers off mute and returned. I still heard no music. Now I see it has been turned off and it sounds like I didn't miss much. Maybe my stupidity served me well in this situation.
Fuck Your God? More like what the fuck is it?!
IronyAbounds @ 52:
'White America' is a direct slap in the face of reich-wingers.
I really, REALLY, don't like that you set this up so that every time I touch/return to this page, the music starts automatically. If I want to listen to it I will - let *me* choose, please.
if barney cant make them talk....nothing will
when they put me away, i hope this is the playlist that they use....boogey all night
except for barney....i poke my eardrums out
Have any of the artists, recording studios or other sources objected to having their music used in torture scenarios? I'd LOVE to see highly-publicized lawsuits brought against the government by all of them.
JHinAZ @ 57:
Please refresh your page. The autoplay has been turned off so it shouldn't play now. Again, sorry for the issue.
How bout adding the 'Friends' theme song.
ummm....if they play rage against the machine, arent they afraid the terrorists are all gonna join mecha?
I'd cave in a flash if they made me listen to the BeeGees. Worse yet, the Kaiser Permanente commercial with 'Staying Alive' and a dirty old man walking down the street. They could just threaten me with that one.
Guys just push the pause button if you don't want to hear it. It will stop.
Weak. Total amateurs.
Diamanda Galas, Happy Flowers, Carcass, that Butthole Surfers song with the puking, Alvin and the Chipmunks. Pretty much anything that qualifies as "ear worm": play that "meow meow meow" cat food commercial for a few hours, but changing the speed slowly. Same goes for pretty much any commercial jingle. The Godz. Really boring techno, like the kind you have to be on drugs to appreciate properly. And with strobe lights. For a week. High-pitched whining noises. Really low rumbly stuff, like [deleted], so their bellies rumble. Yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy. Those Bud Light "Real men of genius" ads. Black metal.
There. Now the army owes me $100,000.00 for consulting. I ain't even giving you the really good hints until you pay up.
Pathetic.
Any C&W on their list?
How sick is it to use my BFF Barney?
Tupac? -- All Eyez on Me.. more likely to induce head boppin, not torture..
One of these things is not like the others.
One of these things just doesn't belong...
I seem to be in a very small group that doesn't find this funny. The only thing that this list goes to show is that nearly anything can be used as a torture device. What is truly sick is the existence of my fellow Americans who want to torture and who think it's quite alright to do so. Just like the word "rape" is cheapened when it's used to describe non-painful incidents, the word "torture" is also bandied about, even on C&L. The flesh is real. The pain is real. The damage to the psyche lasts years, decades after the incident, if they are not simply killed. This is done by Americans.
A responsible journalist would visit people like Bruce Springsteen, Don McClean and James Hetfield and ask them their response to how their music is being used.
hmmm ... i can see Metallica bringing up another million dollar lawsuit up again in the near future ...
though the DOD probably won't notice some 40-50 million spent uselessly more or less ...
oh, and bad techno won't work. anything that repetitive is soothing after some hours.
Ok... the jury's in: Government officials have no imagination!!!!
Here's a few suggestions:
John Zorn: Six Litanies for Heliogabalus (parts of it, at least); Naked City. (Actually, if you pick a Zorn album at random, there's a good chance it'll fit!)
Behold, the Arctopus: Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning
Spastik Ink: Ink Compatible
UnexpecT: In a Flesh Aquarium
etc... etc...
They should really do their research; I would probably dose off during the first 2 minutes of their program!

When did MJ say he wanted to be white? Funny, he doesn't have any of the mannerisms of a "white" person. MJ is an African-American Icon. On the other hand you can't say the the same of eminem.
Once Obama is elective President, the US will be better than ever. Strong, healthy, vibrant and safe.
Say in Canada.
DR @ 71:
Shit yeah. Zorn. Spy vs. Spy. I had to take him out of my car's CD lineup. Makes me drive crazy. And really. When you consider the cultural ooze from which these morons spring, They've never heard of any of this stuff....
(How about Journey.)
Remember when Bush-I invaded Panama, and Manuel Noriega was holed up in the parliament or some building, and during the initial standoff the US forces blasted music including "Born in the USA"?
it's only torture if you speak english. Otherwise, it's just a stupid mix of heavy metal, disco, TV themes, rap, and pop music. At sufficient volume it's bad news, but frankly, don McLean sends me right to sleep, so I could catch a few z's in this mix. It would be like going to the WORST party in flyover country, and not being able to go home. And then have peope try to drown me. And then let dogs chew on me. and then make me stand all day long. Yeah. That would be a really sucky party in flyover country. Typical for some BDSM club in SF or NY, though... especially the BeeGees. And Xtina. Except for being tased and dumped in a 3 foot cage. OK. Nemmind. you're right. It's torture.
Disgusting. And not only the military's taste in music, but also the use they make of that music.
Actually the worst part is the TOTAL lack of imagination on the part of the torturers. I could easily list a track sequence that would drive a person completely bonkers at regular volume, but I won't post it, because I wouldn't want to give those fascist pigs any ideas.

Michael Jackson an icon? Some say yes, others say he is nothing more than a nutbar. Anybody that cosmetically changes their skin colour (which he has done for years and claimed falsely that it was a disease-proven lie) wants nothing more than to be a different race.
As for Obama, he is the best left in the race. That doesn't say much considering what is in the race though. Support, but don't cheerlead. These people's egos are too big already, all of them.
That's the thing about torture. Once plan a doesn't work one has to go to plan b, then into the depths of hell. Torture ascends to the unimaginable.
Plan a Torture
Play Barney 100000000000 times LOUD
Plan b Torture
Tickle brown people
Plan c Torture
repugs are sadist
Why not Ofra Haza or another jewish singer? You'd figure that's the last thing that a loony-tune muslim would want to hear. On top of that, Haza sucks.
Since they're playing these songs at "public events" and apparently brodcasting them, are the artists/ labels getting compensation?
Using music for Torture hardly qualifies as "Fair Play"
And, anyway, isn't a whole new album from Springsteen that he'd let them play over there?
You know, because it isn't payed here.
it's music. Who gives a fuck. The Meow Mix was funny as hell. Imagine cruising in Baghdad, bumping "Meow meow meow meow meow". haha
it's ok they are just following orders.
wonder how long til the day american citizens are marched thru prison camps to see what they have been pretendig is not there.
"fuck your god" is the number one songs for these criminals. ain't that america?
Campy @ 24:
No, I think that was "Magnet and Steel". Anything by Girls Aloud or Avril Lavigne would also put me over the edge.

i am woman by helen reddy
macarthur park by richard harris
Yeah, I'm gonna get singled out but I couldn't care less about most of the psy-ops tactics.
we are a nation of torturers - how's that feel America!!?
Born in the USA! YEAH, BABY! go go go red white and blue for Jesus!!
fucking disgusting, that's what it is.. we'll get as we deserve.
Rendition can be funny. :D
Detainee, chained and hung from ceiling, accidentally gets his penis cut up with a razor - comedy ensues.
Not a single Ministry song?
I would have also expect Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner on there. It always worked on my noisy neighbors.

Those poor dumb bastards. No morals, no heart, and no musical taste. Little surprise bush and his boys are so unhappy. Music should never be used to hurt people, it's a beautiful thing. And I don't think they get comedy either so they got no chance on being real people. It's all anger and hate. Poor dumb bastards.
Wily @ 65:
It's already been said that ANY music, played loudly and non-stop, can be psychologically devastating. But the lack of imagination on this playlist is unforgivable, and I agree w/ Tweakerbell @ 75 - its only torture if you speak english, otherwise its mostly watered down metal.
I think for your casual music listener, The Residents would be pretty awful for days on end, and they have dozens of CDs too. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UFyWEGQl80&feature=related)
As for metal:
Brain Drill - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEDI99acZPY
Psyopus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIiYwKO88aY
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNXh8_gDyhU&feature=related
...Of course, if they tried that shit on me, it would be a case of "Please don't throw me in the briar patch" syndrome. I listen to this shit all day and night anyway. If they wanted to torture me, its as easy as turning on any Clear Channel owned radio station, especially "Alternative Rock". Eight hours of Dave Matthews Band and I'd be begging for mercy.
I would kill myself listen to that crap. Could you imagine being brought to a place, not of your culture and being played are nothing except loud thunderous bells and men going Walla walla walla.
Literally, the soldiers are told to torture with 'noise' and 'dissorientation'.
You soldiers are obviously jumpingright in bed with torture. There are groups here that are planning "Captureing and torturing" vacationing Americans. Just grab them in the street, or pull them out their car windows and shove a sock in their mouth and start pour ing water down their throat.
It's not illegal!
AshWilliams @ 92:
It's not really that your singled out. It's just you think the government has a right to manipulate the mind of it's own population thru torture and deception, and we do not.
It means that you support fascism and we do not. Not that you need to be singled out. You just said what you were so just put on your brownshirt and do your thing.
When they start throwing Jews into Gas chambers maybe then you will get a conscience.
what? No Billy Joel?
Make someone listen to 52nd street for a few days, and they'll talk.
Jenny'O @ 83:
Following Orders? Let me quote Wikipedia for you:
The Nuremberg Defense is a legal defense that essentially states that the defendant was "only following orders" ("Befehl ist Befehl") and is therefore not responsible for his crimes. The defense was most famously employed during the Nuremberg Trials, after which it is named.
Before the end of World War II, the Allies suspected such a defense might be employed, and issued the London Charter of the International Military Tribunal, which specifically stated that this was not a valid defense against charges of war crimes.
Thus, under the Nuremberg Principles, "defense of superior orders" is not a defense for war crimes, although it might influence a sentencing authority to lessen the penalty.
"The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him."
-------
Only following orders eh? Line up for the gallows Warcriminal, we're taking off your head.
"The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him."

Tkae a few pictures of your streets and homes now. Cause there will be a "post war" period and I really don't think the US can beat the entire world in a war. As much as they talk shit.
Some suggestions to add to the list perhaps;
the Hansens, Britney Spears, Vanilla Ice, Barry Manilow,Lynard Skynard
All Christmas music..
All Christian music
Campy @ 24:
Great, now I have that song stuck in my head.
You, sir, are a sadist.
SOME of the songs listed are good music-but of course, one person's music is another person's noise. Since most 'prisoners' are assumed to not understand English, and, since some of those songs are completely indecipherable to English speaking people,I wonder-What's the point?
In Soviet America, iPod listens to YOU!
I swear. When am I going to wake up in the United States again?
Most of this list rocks! Aside from the Barney and Sesame Street stuff, and the wretchpile that is the Bee Gees, I'd be over-adrenalized.
no Fergie on that list? 'cause while she may be easy on the eyes, one cannot say the same for her effect upon the ears.
"american pie" only #20?! Jeez I'd crack in by the 2nd verse...
Fascism is never having any choice, so these songs are all about control, It is amazing there is more then one option.
Lou Reed, Metal Machine Music
I'm 55 ,but I gotta say Saliva and Drowning Pool got my ol bones woikin.
Say what you will, but Deicide is one of the greatest bands ever.
Where's your God when you need him?
So Satan's comin'?
I think the point isn't what shitty music is or isn't being played by our Crusaders, but that we even have these fucking Crusaders torturing, raping, killing in the name of Jesus. This is the real fucking problem, people. No wonder the rest of the world hates us...
More at my blog...
If they made me listen to Air Supply, I'd tell them anything they wanted to know.
92 AshWilliams Says: "Yeah, I’m gonna get singled out but I couldn’t care less about most of the psy-ops tactics."
And pulling out a few fingernails isn't really torture, is it? I mean what's a bit of water on your face, now that we're talking?
It's all part of the torture bro!!!!!! It may seem innocuous, but it isn't.
Rusty Shackleford @ 119:
It's actually a pretty good record if you're attuned to the experimental noise thing.
I do think the notion of punishing people with music is particularly repellent though. Another symptom of how far we've fallen as a country.
Edwin @ 125:
Yeah, I guess what I was thinking was that it's not direct physical torture, but I do acknowledge that there could be a physical (brain) side effect; so it's somewhat hard to draw the line in the sand.
A major issue for me is: there are NO details. It says they play these songs really loud in "military prisons and bases" (a huuuuge generality), but nothing on length of time played, who exactly it was played to,what some of the effects might have been, specific volume, whether it was looped or not (or shuffle!), etc. There's so many questions left unanswered.
Also, the target group of people this is applied to (sounds like) is not just detainees in Cuba. So, because of the fact that there are bases and military prisons across the US and, if this truly was a form of "torture", wouldn't it be part of common knowledge?
I am glad the torturers have a sense of humor.
No Pantera??????
Fuckin pussies....

'Arcade' by the Swedish heavy metal and electronic group Machinae Supremacy are rather good, nice song about a serial killer having regrets (I think)
I think what people fail to consider is the whole picture. Abducted, hooded, chained and transported half way around the world while they fuck with your mind. Then, still hooded, drag into a cell and blare strange music, while you sit in your cell waiting for some annonymous torturerers to come and get you, never knowing what will happen from moment to moment, hearing screams of pain from others, the smell of the place, cold and naked dragged into a room with diabolical sub-human types and the "games" begin. I'd be freaked from the flight to Guantanamo alone, wouldn't you?? Walking home from work one day, next thing you're in a cargo hold en route to Egypt, and then Guantanamo. Just tale a minute and imagine a day in the lives of these people--- really imagine it. Not just this music: the whole picture.
Ever been blindfolded in a room of hostile people? Think about it.
Edwin @ 135:
And the Republicans and their apologists call this American justice, sad state of affairs.
Holy shit! Can you imagine Meow-Mix on a 48 hour loop?
i forgot about the music here earlier ... was reading away and came across this post again ... it didn't play automatically the way it had earlier today (thank goodness). i never even saw what this post was about the music was so grating (having a low-grade migraine didn't help).
i must say, if i were subjected to that for any length of time, i would in fact go screaming mad in short order.
anyone who does that to someone else deserves to spend the rest of their life in a very small room with very large speakers listening to audio of my choosing.
They should add the song "Yes We Can" by Will I Am on to that list! That would torture anyone, especially played over and over! I can hear it now as the people are being tortured...."Yes We Can" "Yes We Can!" with a picture of Dubya & Co. in the background!
Bad Religion and Time Bomb by Godsmack! LOL!!! Not saying they are torture songs, just a good explanation of how the mentality of this country is!
We have come a long way since 1961, when Billy Wilder visualized Russian interrogators torturing a prisoner with repetitious playing of "Itsy-Bitsy Teenie-Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" in his cold war comedy, "I, 2, 3."
A couple of thoughts: First, Warren Zevon with REM backing him up did a great cover of "Raspberry Beret" years ago, so I have to confess that I like that song. Second, Why oh Why do these NAZI freaks insist on using Bruce's "Born In The USA"? Don't these stupid motherfuckers EVER listen to the lyrics of that song? As for Neil Diamond's "America", that song captures perfectly the ersatz "patriotism" that has gripped the mentally challenged in this country. Personally, after 10 seconds of that song, I'd be begging for an IED. Lastly, how long do you think it will take before Hetfield, Ulrich, and the rest of Metallica start bitching up about being cheated out of royalties for the use of their song?
DarthSaikos @ 137:
Shit, better that than 30 seconds of Neil Diamond's "America"
Edwin @ 135:
We make jokes about the music playlist, but you are absolutely right, Edwin What we have here is merely the soundtrack to America's moral decay.
It is cool to see that some people who are into politics are also into extreme metal...nice seeing shout outs to Braindrill and Agoraphobic Nosebleed...but if I were Glenn Benton, I would be pissed that my music was being used in such a degrading way. But being the person he is, he is probably loving it.
By the way, Deicide are not a bunch of assholes, just Glenn Benton.
You know aht's funny? In the film "The Road to Guantanamo", which described the treatment of three UK nationals who spent over a year at camp X-ray; they re-enacted a torture event where the victim was handcuffed to the floor of a large cell and subjected to extreme metal while a strobe light was going off. I thought I would really enjoy that...
haha but if they had me at gitmo they'd play johnny cash or some shite and I'd be giving up info on everybody I'd ever met
LOL
aht=what

I agree. As long as we are all aware, I think the jokes keep us sane. Some days man, the news is just depressing. Some of these made me laugh.
I hate that "Magnet and Steel" [at 84] song too. I didn't see Chris Cross, "Moon and NYC". Any cutsie kids' choir would make me talk. The theme to Sesame Street does it to me too. (Never heard the Barney song myself, but... )
cv @ 126:
Maybe, but most people aren't. When I worked at an indie music store we used to put it on at closing time to clear the customers out.
The Tupac song is about redemption.......Why is it in this play list?
I think who ever created this has no clue about what Tupac Amaru Shakur stood for.
This music player post is pretty stupid. But hey, people always eat this shit up.
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive. - Tupac Amaru Shakur
