The Situation Room: Blitzer & Meyers Wallop Buchanan On Obama Name Smear

The outlook for the Republicans in 2008 is abysmal and it's obvious they're having a hard time concealing it. Bay Buchanan and Dee Dee Meyers appeared on The Situation Room Thursday to discuss the ongoing flap over the juvenile attacks on Senator Barack Obama by accentuating his middle name and how right wing radio hosts are losing their minds over John McCain's rejection of the tactic.
Buchanan adamantly states that Obama's middle name should be fair game because it's a real concern for a lot of Americans and that they have the right to know if he has Muslim in his blood. WTF? This is pure xenophobic baiting at its finest (or worst) and both Meyers and Blitzer call her out on it. By the end of the segment Buchanan is reduced to a blithering idiot with Wolf and Meyers laughing and cracking jokes at her expense. This is so refreshing to see on CNN, especially after their inexcusable smear against Obama. We often give Blitzer a hard time at C&L, and rightfully so, but I have to give him credit, this was a shining moment for him.

Holy Obamadan! Barack Turns Even ‘Muslim Rumors’ To His Advantage
Odd, Pat B. is usually singing Obamas praise.
omg douchebaggery at its finest...I didn't know that being Muslim was a genetically inhereted condition.
Hummmmm. McCain adopted a kid from Bangladesh which is a predominately Islamic country. So he has a muslim in this family. America must be aware of this threat!!

Reject Republican Racist Rhetoric !
The sad thing is, Americans are so moronic, such a ridiculous tactic would probably work.
At the risk of violating Godwin's law very early in the thread, hearing Pat or Bay blather on (bay on, perhaps?) about "impure blood" is par for the course for these North American Nazis. Frogs jump, fish swim, etc.
The thing that explodes my simple little engineer head is why this fact never seems to register with the chatterers. Why aren't the Buchanan's routinely shunned by people with any sense of humanity as soon as they open their yaps. Guess I'll leave it to the socio-political types to figure that one out.
"Muslim in his blood", indeed.. I suppose it's official: "Muslim" is the new "Nigger".
One's religion should make no difference at all in who is president. Should not make a difference if the person is Muslim, Catholic, Mormon, Buddhist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Evangelical or even atheist. What matters is that the person is a loyal American with a sense of integrity, honor and decency. The real problem is the lack of such character in the current Oval Office demegogue who is a fear monger and using boogie men to manipulate the American public. So what if anyone takes the oath of office on the Koran. If they are sincere in honoring their oath of office, they should be good enough for us. The real problem is that the Usurper-in-Chief has not honored one word of his own oath, not even the punctuations.
to rend - Bay Buchanan not Pat Buchanan was on the show. She reminds me of a femal Hannity
"has muslim in his blood"?
did she really say that?
lol
Wow, LESLIE Blitzer stood up for a Democratic candidate?
WTF ~ is this leap year day also a sojourn into the Twilight Zone?
And who was it that mentioned that Bay is Pat Buchanan's gay brother?
lol.
Bitch sounds like something out of Harry Potter.
What I still find incredible about this is that I have yet to hear anyone mention that around the world Hussein is a common name, often but not always among Muslims. That these so-called conservatives are so anxious and willing to infer that all Muslims are suspect is contemptible beyond belief. They're absolutely proud to be xenophobes. Can we now start questioning anyone named Jesus, Mary or Joseph because of Christian extremists?
Blitzer stood up like a wet leaf.
Come on
If she's a GOP strategist, Barack and Michelle can start measuring for new curtains.
I love watching the GOP implode. They're at each other's throats. And, it's kinda hard to hide.
Stranded @ 14:
Only 20% of Americans even have a passport. I wouldn't expect them to know much beyond the local mall. We've seen they can't even read maps.
The Truth Hurts @ 6:
Its proving itself to be pretty weak, except among the truly fear-driven and xenophobic. The Bushies have overplayed their terror smokescreen, and the blatant racism of an attack like this does not appeal to a great deal of conservatives.
Also, so far its proved difficult to make mud stick to Obama. Even McCain realizes the "Hussein" path is the wrong one to take (although the angry far-right just sees this as another sign that McCain is betraying them by being too liberal).
If this is the best the right has, I think we can say, Bring it!
Her harpy voice and her pathetic message are not going to get McCain any extra points
What's new with the Lobbyists?
Oh, I see, we've moved on. Thank you MSM.
K A B U K I
Goebbels would be very proud of Bay.
"Muslim in his blood."
It's obvious that the Buchanans have "Stupid in their blood."
And stupid pouring out of their mouths, mixed with some black ichor & yellow bile.
Hey Buchannan, STOP ACTING COY! You know as well as everyone in the room EXACTLY WHY that racist bastard paraded Mr. Obama's middle name around... because HE KNOWS that to a LARGE constituency of the GOP, superficial information like this MATTERS!
Edwin @ 16:
And on that theme, just WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??
Bushies approval rating is at 32%
CONgress approval rating is at 24%
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/
So, who are these people that approve of Bush, and is this not a justification for pro-abortion rights?
The best part about the Obama campaign is exposing the ugly bigoted side(right wing) of America.
Do the right wing mean that Americans should be fearful of black Americans that have cultural names of thier ancestors.
Is the right wing trying to say that any name of an American that is not "eurocentric" should not be considered for the Presidency or any positions of power?
Will the right wing distance themselves from racist tactics?
We will see!!
Lets start a campaign poking fun at McCain's middle name.......Sidney! John Sidney McCain III. Isn't Sidney a girl name? Isn't Sidney a little poodunk town in Nebraska? His middle name is Sidney OH GAWD! hes a terrorist! Lets get rid all the Sidneyites in this world!
60 years of race baiting, playing to people's fears and accusing your opponent of being a traitor is all coming undone over a black man with a funny middle name. Finally!
The day after Obama is elected, it'll be easy to tell who all of the racists are - they'll all have broken blood vessels in their eyes.
Is anyone else having problems opening links today?
Is it the fact that Obama's middle name is Hussein, or the fact that a huge majority of his staff are Clinton retreads that the rightwing despised??
gowest272004 @ 24:
Sidney?Oh no,I could never vote for someone with a middle name like Sidney.

Buchanan has an Irish name so I have a right to know if she's drunk off her ass!

Freezing up?
How do you get "MUSLIM IN THE BLOOD"?
Is that a religious frame that plays on the Christian belief in the cleansing power of the BLOOD OF CHRIST? So, therefore, if the BLOOD OF CHRIST has potency to Christians, then the GOP thinks that Christians are dumb enough to think that Muslims focus on THE BLOOD in the same way?
Get real.
framecop @ 32:
When he is Attorney General, he will be busy putting the TURDS you support in prison.
Logan Murphy .. one moment of reason from Blitzer deserves acknowledgement? I think you are being too kind. It's a sorry state of affairs that stnadards have fallen so low, but indeed they have . Oh well...( sigh )
Since when is religion in "blood"?
Is blood strained for "religion cells" or "religion infection" after its donated to the Red Cross?
People are sick!!
Marcus Aurelius @ 26:
And Rush Limbaugh will take it no more. Like a bag of vicodine (or Biggie Fries), he'll dive right in and finally start freely saying the word n*gger on the air.
Bottom line is that Muslim is code for n*gger .

Oh yeah and just ask yourself why no one is walking around repeating McCain's middle name, and then get back to your troll-cave. No "DUMBOCRATS" are trying to HIDE Obama's middle name, the right wing is framing the argument that way. "WHY IS HE ASHAMED? WHY IS HE TRYING TO HIDE IT? IS IT BECAUSE HE IS MOOSLEM? THE MERICAN PEOPLES HAS A RIGHT TO NOE."
...so ignorant it makes my head hurt...
framecop, when are you going to enlist?
framecop @ 37:
How did you manage to "TURN ON YOUR COMPUTER"?
I can't find a single coherent thought in that post.
Bay's brother is a Holocaust denier. What do you expect her to say?
this is a foolish argument-- cunningham was after a reaction and that was why he used it-- what this whole debate about obama's middle name shows is how insecure and prejudiced americans are towards foreign names-- if i was barack i would start using my middle name-- he's got my vote either way--

Actually I support Edwards, and he will never be President, because neither Clinton or Obama ever had a snowball's chance in Hell of becoming President.

I thought he waited some 45 minute until after everyone had left. Sound like wasted time to me.
framecop @ 37:
There is a wonderful documentary film called "Blood in the Face" about White Supremacists in the U.S. The title refers to their theory that, because white people can be seen blushing (in shame) and are unable to "hide their shame" therefore, white people are more like god's image than darker-skinned people.
My favorite character is this older man who looks just like Santa Claus. You see him several times during the film before he opens his mouth and the vile racism pours out. Quite a shock to hear "Santa" spew such venom.
If GOP "fear and smear" tactics get laughed out of the MSM, they'll simply resort to ... um ... uh ...
MMMM what other political parties government in history had laws against mixing blood of one religion with the most perfect blood of the supreme peoples. I just cant remember.

That's all we need is an "Islama-octaroon" running the country.
Thank your lucky stars that Bay got the word out.
Though I do hope it's not just Bay projecting as she is hoping to have a "little Muslim in her." ;-)
fastneataverage @ 61:

<blockquoteF*** the Dumbocratic Party. I'm sick of media-driven cattle.
So, who's your candidate going to be? Nobody?
framecop @ 59:
I was an Edwards supporter but too he's out now so it's time to back the Democratic nominee whoever it is. i support Obama now but if Hillary's the nominee I will support her. Either is preferable to president McCain.
C&L??? HUH?
I agree with the point Buchanan was trying to make before Blitzer cut her off. And that is, the media is asking some questions of Huckabee's religiosity, isn't it fair to ask Obama about his? I think it's fair UNLESS people are using his middle name as a lie by association. That point was NOT brought up.
Insofar as discussing how batshiat crazy (i.e. religious) a candidate is, yes I think it's perfectly legitimate for people and the media to get into this. I do not think it's appropriate for any government official to make any suggestion that there is a litmus test for or against any religion (or entire lack thereof).
LanceThruster @ 68:
Well I can tell you who has Muslim blood on their hands...
Conversely I can say who has Christian blood on their hands.

Svendem @ 8:
Yep, y'all, I heard the same damn thing. She either sent out more code or inadvertantly spit out a little veiled racism right there.
I have been telling my co-workers that this whole middle-name/madrassa thing has always been about pointing out that Obama is black without coming right out and saying it (the tactic doesn't work on most people who post here, but it might work on the rest of the great unwashed). The problem the republicans have right now, with Obama, is that their go-to weapon, "Attacking the Messenger" is severely limited when it comes to him and we all know they lose when they stick to the issues. They want to, OH THEY WANT to so BADLY, go after him with the race card, but it feels like the average american is over it; the only people who want to listen to that shit are a dwindling minority of bigoted mouth-breathers.
No Framecop-he isn't known by his full name, only his first and last.
The GOP insists on using his middle name for stupidly obvious reasons that we should not even have to go into.
This was "a shining moment" for Wolf Blitzer? Wow, the bar is truly low.
ConcernedCanuck @ 28:
So has someone told Sanjay Gupta not to stray too far outside Atlanta? I hate to see him fixing a flat in Forsyth County or Marietta. So does this means everyone without an anglicized name should look over their shoulder?
Bay Buchanan is 10 dollar whore who cleans mccrazy's hairy sweaty grundle with her tongue every night
Bay go bark at the moon . . . cuz we all know we ALWAYS referred to Bush 41 as George Herbert Walker Bush and we always referred to Raygun as Ronald Wilson Reagan and we always refer to 43 as George Walker Bush.
In fact in recent years the ONLY presdent or candidate who was reffered to by his middle name was Bill Clinton (William Jefferson Blythe III) and it was done so in scorn by Limbaugh and the right wing.
Me thinks we can see a pattern here.
But really have they been referring to HIllary by her middle name? Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton
Bay be consistant .. I mean middle names are a part of everyone and it's who they are, Bay Marie
Bay you can't be so obtuse
B Real @ 79:
yikes.
I have no doubt that Obama will be able to deal with this "matter" as eloquently and well as he has other matters.
chrismurphy @ 72:
They know he's not a muslim. That's the point. It's intended to be a smear directed toward the ignorant, mouth breathing, fools who would actually be concerned and would wet their pants over the name "Hussain" or a name that sounds like Ossama. Which reminds me of a story about how Bush reacted when he saw the name Obama for the first time on a campaign button. I think the story is that he nearly pissed himself. LOL. What a boob.
[refers to deleted post. sitemonitor. ]
Don't be obtuse.
Svendem @ 8:
Where have you been, it's been offical for years now.
DWB = Driving While Black
FWM = Flying While Muslim
This part of Obama's campaign strategy is brilliant. Be black (or at least 1/2) and have a Muslim middle name. And just sit back and watch the republicans shit all over themselves.
The RNC and Rove told the goats not to say his middle name, but they'll end up going to back to the old trusty, Barack Osama.
framecop @ 66:
Hah! Yeah. Thats TOTALLY what you said, not some weird nonsensical rant about the Blood of Christ and how thats somehow unimportant to Muslims... I guess... I don't really know.
Guess I'm just too dumb to understand.
I'm probably also too dumb to understand this rationale from people, who, when their candidate loses in the primary, they stay home in November out of stubbornness. GUESS WHAT- None of the available candidates genuinely reflects my political views. In a two-party system, that's going to happen, especially to people who are well-informed about the issues.
However, that's no reason not to vote for the candidate who is the most closely aligned with your political beliefs. Otherwise, I don't want to hear any bitching for the next four years, you negative Nancy you.
framecop @ 79:
I will do all that I can to make sure that Clinton or Obama do not DRAG DOWN my candidates here in North Carolina, but I know that Governor, Senator, and House candidates are in big trouble here in NC with either Clinton or Obama at the top of the ticket.
After the media/GOP finishes with Obama and the Weather Underground friends, Rezko, unscreened campaign contributions from middle eastern countries like Iran, he'll lose in November by more than 20% and drag down candidates in states like November.
Thanks for BLOWING 2008 by getting suckered by the media away from Edwards two elections in a row!
Media: "Love Dean, Love Dean, he's a phenomenon"...Dumbocrats: "We love Dean. He's phenomenal."
Media "Dean sucks, Kerry's the most electable."...Dumbocrats: "I want to win in November, I'm going with Kerry because he's more electable."
Media: "Clinton v. Obama. Clinton v. Obama"...Dumbocrats: "So, who you supporting? Clinton or Obama?"
Media-led cattle. Sheeple. A disgrace.
So you're not voting in the general election for president. Okay.
Cantor de Mambo @ 82:
Which should be painfully obvious to deep thinkers like Frame Cop.

This use of Obama's middle name, Hussein, is a cheep and low attempt to smear and tarnish him through associations of not only a Muslim nature but also remember back to the smear of his last name. If they can't smear outright, they'll do it ad homonym style. "Oh, Barrack "HUSSEIN"
OsamaObama must not be good for Murrca..."Have we forgotten Saddam Hussein?
Osama bin Forgotten?
MADRASSA?
The GOP is desperate, they dredge mud for better mud.
.
The bizarre thing is that I can't imagine why Myers or Blitzer failed to tell Buchannan that what she said was godawful silly and racist. You can't be afraid to challenge this kind of stupidity when it's appropriate.
framecop @ one of those:
Wow. For being such an independent thinker you sure believe a lot of BS.
Go back to LGF you troll. Don't even tell me you're not racist when you say that Obama is getting donations from Iran. Can you even find Iran on a map?
framecop, I sure hope you've padded any sharp corners in your house.
Bay Buchanan is a horrible person, and if I ever meet her, I would love to have the opportunity to say as much to her face. Pat has become more polite, but don't doubt for a second he has very strong ideas about who has the right blood and who doesn't.
Ruthless People @ 71:
Thank you. I was an Edwards supporter, I am an Obama supporter - and if HIllary get's the nomination I will vote for Hillary. I am rather tired of tempter tantrums of people whose candidate is no longer in the race saying that they won't vote now, because what their saying by default is that they are fine with how the country will be if John "I will populated SCOTUS with judged more to the right of Roberts" McCain.
And these liberals who will not vote because their candidate isn't the nominee are saying that they are fine with Roe V. Wade being overturned and a host of other right wing issues, and returning women to second class status.
Bay spoke on my campus last semester. She had a packed house of about 7 people - the entire campus chapter of the College Republicans...
You know, since no candiadate is my ideal candidate, I just cannot understand the vitriol of the supporters on either side of the Clinton v. Obama contest. Honestly, you couldn't get a tissue between them in terms of policy. Folks need to chill.
Bud @ 95:
She probably still gets a rush remembering the pheromones.
The idea clearly seems to exist in many places and among many who consider themselves "patriotic Americans" that somehow an Arabic name (news flash!!!!! Arabs and Muslims are not synonymous) precludes a person from being a real American. This issue brings this idea into the open. It offers me a welcome opportunity to address the underlying ignorance and racism of these self-appointed "patriots." I submit that there are many who consider themselves as "patriotic Americans" who act the same as any old fascist would yet they are blind to this of course. These are the same people, no doubt, who have decided that African-Americans should "get over it" and stop whining about slavery. These people refuse to see that they share a planet and a country with other human beings who are the same in the eyes of God, Christian God or any other religion' God. Christians should know better, so these silly inanities are clear as day to those who know better.
I was raised to believe that every American has the basic right to freedom of religion. I am right. I thought that all Patriots knew this as well. Obama is a Christian for God's sake! They treat him like this? What's wrong with this picture? If they hate their fellow "Christian" because of his Arabic name, we can expect them to treat anyone else worse. How would they treat a Mormon? Mormons and Christians have a much greater difference in what they believe than Muslim/Christians, but Mormons are white. End of argument. Until fairly recently Mormons discriminated against Blacks quite openly and without any problems for who was American / or who was a human being.
Since when have the conservative/"patriotic"/Christians taken over this country? I personally am sick of them. They aren't Christians and they aren't patriots. They are fools and it's clear for all to see. Is this country theirs alone now? When did this happen? Why do they reject Obama saying he's a Christian and assume that he's not what he claims to be one? How stupid!

I highlighted in bold a part in my comment that you must have missed. The rightwingers hate the Clintons. A big part of Obama's team are Clinton retreads. Do they question his name for that reason, or because of his who he is associating with and the name is an easy target? Better to understand?

Old Billy @ 113 "Clinton voted against the landmines ban; what's up with that?"
It wasn't a landmines ban, it was cluster bombs, an amendment to a defense authorization bill.
The reason for that vote Nay is most likely that it followed the Israeli use of a million clusterbomblets to "mine" S. Lebanon (her vote was "pro-Israel," not per se pro-clusterbombs).
That view is supported by the fact that Schumer also voted Nay.

That's not true. Atheists (like myself) don't believe in God.
Maybe Bush believes in God, on some weird level of himself, that escaped the CIA hypnosis training, which isn't so polluted and twisted that it actually registers his 'beliefs.'
You would have to dig for it as with a spoon through a mountain of shit.
You missed the segment following this one when Blitzer had the former Israeli PM, Benyamin Netanyahou, on the show. Blitzer was adamant to get his soundbite jumping on the anti-Obama bandwagon after Hillary claimed the media was out to get her. Blitzer asked the former PM whether he believes the U.S. should speak with enemies like Iran. Netanyahou had the decency not to stick his nose where it doesn't belong and dodged the question. But, Blitzer didn't relent. He was going to get that rhetoric he was after. So he threw Hamas into the equation and stated that in a recent Israeli poll 64% of the respondents believe the Israeli government should speak with Hamas and engage in diplomacy. That's when Netanyahou told him that enemies who seek to destroy Israel should not be spoken to. Of course, Hamas, will somehow, miraculously, destroy Israel with their puny home made rockets and manage to stand up to squadrons of fighter jets, tanks and helicopter gunships. But, I digress.
Blitzer was after that sound bite and he managed to smear Obama in the process. Basically saying to pro-Israel voters in the U.S. "take it from the former Israeli PM, if you care about Israel, don't vote for Obama".
That's really sleazy, even by CNN's standards.

Barry and Shelli are no better. They played the race card first in this campaign and then played the victims. My feelings are that they would make great snake oil salespeople.
Is anyone else disappointed, rather than impressed by Wolf and DeeDee?
This was a painful segment to me, and what I saw, was three white people having a racist "debate" without ever using the word.
What a pathetic dance!
Pukecannon talked throughout it, never conceding to her naked hatemongering, while the "response" allowed the rhetoric and giggled.
And this is "our" "new" "response" to the right?
Ouch!

Right wing bubblegum at it's finest.
Bay, get a life.
Is that all you got... a guy's middle name? That all you got?
Conservative commentators are like school yard bullies. They pick some little thing and jab at you with it. I remember some junior high school tough guy, making fun of my name, every time I came into class... so funny.
Flash forward, 10 years later I'm the tough guy now. Back from intensive army training, muscled up from disciplined exercise. And there's little bully bro...
...a god damned greeter at Wall Mart!
Oh, the sweet revenge. Better than any physical contest.
The Repubs will get theirs!

Sorry it took so long, my computer froze up.
That was witty of Blitzer to ask Bay what her middle name was.
I didn't catch her answer - but "OfPigs" would be a good middle name for her, I think.
I think Obama should change his name to Barack Billy-Bob Obama - just to put an end to this nonsense.
I disagree with how this video segment is being characterized. I'm no big fan of "The Babe", but I don't think Wolf and DeeDee scored any major points.

Red blood cells do not have DNA, however, there are other cells in blood, like white blood cells, that have DNA.
FdeBear @ 136:
I was just going to say that. I don't think there was any kind of strong attack on Bay Buchanan for insisting it is okay to call Obama by his middle name. I thought the attempt by Blitzer was very weak -- I'd like to see someone put the wingers in their places for calling him Hussein. This doesn't qualify.
pps @ 137:
I sure hope that "N" in the middle doesn't stand for Najaab, or sumthin'.
Bay Buchanan is just a racist piece of crap with shit flowing out of her mouth every time she opens it.
Eat shit and die, bitch.
The Truth Hurts @ 6:
you got that one right!
Bay "Mother Bates" Buchanan.
She looks more like Tony Perkins every time I see her.
I have muslim in my blood. It was a transfusion in the nineties - before we knew about the threat blood type M poses.
I find myself driving toward mecca sometimes when I'm not paying attention.
If this is going to be the gist of the GOP campaign, then I almost feel sorry for them. It's that pathetic.
Guess we learned that Pat got the brains in that nutty family
RichStraightWhiteAmericanMale @ 76:
That's what I was thinking. What exactly did Wolf do or say that was worth being called a "shining" moment in this clip?
