Nikke Finke:

Well, one insider says she was booked on Keith Olberman and Morning Joe to talk about her tome -- and then unbooked. "These are shows that call her regularly to come on. And then the word came from on high that she had to be cancelled."

Brave New Films:

It seems that Arianna Huffington has run up against the impenetrable wall that is Tim Russert's ego. Huffington, who is currently on tour for her new book Right Is Wrong: How The Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded The Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe, will be appearing on CNN, ABC, and CBS. She had been booked on Morning Joe and Countdown with Keith Olbermann as well, but those bookings were suddenly and inexplicably cancelled.

NBC confirmed that Huffington wouldn't be booked on any NBC-affiliated show to promote her book, but refused to explain why. Huffington's people say that this is Tim Russert's doing, that Russert is out for revenge because Huffington called him a "conventional wisdom zombie" in her book and devoted seven pages to faulting Russert for allowing his Meet the Press guests to go unchallenged (not to mention HuffPo's RussertWatch).

Oh, did the poor widdle WATB get his feelings hurt? Or were Arianna's words just a little too close for comfort?

Why would anyone expect NBC to interrupt its 24/7 Rev. Wright coverage with anything or anybody else right now? Hell, the newest, and most powerful U.S. aircraft carrier right now is steaming toward the Persian Gulf, and even that doesn't count as a worthy topic. Huffington calling out the press for their complicity and expecting to get time? Furgettaboutit.

This is censorship, pure and simple. The networks practice it when anyone dare criticize them. We have a real problem with how the media in this country operates.

it is a shame that one little WATB can effect a whole networks policy. One would think each show would be able to book whomever they want. If I were as popular as KO I would insist it in my contracts.

Timmeh IS a conventional wisdom zombie. He hasn't helped the American public one little bit, but allowed mistruths and outright lies to be promulgated on his show, to the great detriment of the American public, which is headed for disaster once China starts calling in our outrageously high loans. Oh, how Huntley would mourn and Brinkley probably is mourning the dlownfall of their once-great network news sensibility.

What's to fear Tim? The irony is too delicious. We get the fact that todays news groups have to pull their commercial weight and serve their corporate parents. It will be near impossible for these relics to keep the lid on this blatent anti viewer behavior much longer. There is a good reason the evening news anchor programs are "serving" half the collective viewership as 20 years ago. The format is obsolete and the content is stale before it airs. There is no depth or gravitas in the presentation. Most of these folks are beholding to someone and you'll see more of the interchangeability of newsguys as politicians and politicians as news guys as time goes on. With the lines blurred, the propaganda can flow freely.

Russert and his wife, Maureen Orth who writes for Vanity Fair have had a war of words going with Arianna for quite sometime. Apparently, Orth wrote about the Huffington's when they were married and it wasn't quite right and all hell broke loose.

If Russert had a conscience he would stop spewing his bullshit every Sunday and he would begin to start playing it straight with the american people who make up his audience. All he has to resort to are gotcha questions when he has dems on and he gives a pass to his corporate pals who are repugs. As far as I am concerned, he has as much blood on his hands and is just as responsible for the 4,065 americans who have died in Iraq as the administration does.

If they had been objective and tried to get the facts about Iraq we would never have gone to war. Personally, I don't watch the clown or his other little pals at NBC. I don't know how these people look themselves in the mirror.

Integrity is a spiritual quality or mode of life that one can possess as much integrity as they can embody. There is nothing and hardly no one in the media that embodies integrity. Therefore they possess none. BTW, there is no shelf life, you either have it or you don't.

Yet Arianna still doggedly refuses to utter the phrase, the Corporate Media. Vacillating between Kos' absurd "Traditional Media" and the wholly inaccurate "Main Stream Media," all she is left with to try and describe the media and how it functions is a vague notion that it is merely driven by the choices and herd instinct of talking heads such as Russert. This argument is similar to the specious right wing sociological theory called COP or the Culture of Poverty which seeks to explain away the institutional reasons for poverty and flip the blame on black culture. Simply summed up, this argument is a construct designed to ignore the responsibility of elite power structures and blame the victim. Following her blog posts over the years on the subject, she continually misses the mark. She's right about the media's behavior, but unable to explain it.

For Browkaw's VILE comments , " we broke it , so we own it " " precision weapons " that worked so great, WHEN THEY DIDN'T ( up to 40% failure rate), to the non stop banners parroting the pentagon's Pravda propaganda " operation Iraqi freedom " , when it SHOULD have read, operation Iraqi OIL .

Now NBC/dan abrams runs away from the Generals&Colonels they hired , like the little cowards they are, refusing to address the incestuous relationship you guys have w/ the pentagon and the ONLY balanced voice you had PHIL DONAHUE , to bring up the proven fact , the Iraq invasion was unnecessary and for OIL , was FIRED .

Sorry to disagree but these same people you site: KO, Tweety, Abrams, Russert, David Gregory, Scarborough, et al, are not to be confused with news and information. They are all corporate shills, on the payroll to some corporate paymaster, and they take their marching orders like good little employees. Ariana is in business and in order to maintain that business she stirs it up. Remember that only a few years ago she was a shill for Newt Gingrich and the GOP. She has now done a 180 turn.

Real news, if it exists at all, can be found through someone like Amy Goodman. But Amy is not "sexy". No bleached blond with a blinding smile and nice legs so she is unsuitable for the prime time cookie cutter delivery. And besides, she has integrity. She takes it seriously and I doubt she would bend to the will of the corporate master.

PBS and C-Span deliver the news. But they are kind of "boring". The people they present have a viewpoint and are often challenged by the moderator to explain or flesh out an opinion. But that takes time. No 3 minute soundbites to satisfy an arrested development audience.

So if Tim refuses Ariana a spot to sell her book, no big deal. She'll do fine. After all, she managers a blog that censors opinions while at the same time trying to shape yours.

Advocating not giving a platform to someone because that someone usually uses that platform to spout hate speech, slander and even death threats... is just the teeniest bit different from not giving someone a platform to talk about their book because they raised a criticism of the media. A valid one.

A little bit of difference there. Just a skosh.

craig's picture

Russert has admitted... actually admitted is the wrong word because that would imply that he understood there was something wrong with it... rather, Russert has asserted, proclaimed, whatever - that he contacts government officials and asks them if its OK if he reports something they said to him, or some info they gave him.

NOT that if a govt. official asks that something he's about to say be off the record Russert he, Russert might assent to that, but rather that EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS OFF THE RECORD, he will ask for permission to report something, and if permission is denied, he won't report it.

Russert therefore is NOT a journalist and its a grievous insult to all journalists to call him that. He is in fact the very opposite of a journalist. When a totalitarian government ends free press, shoots all the reporters and installs mouthpieces in their place, they will be Russerts.

By his own admission, though he's too stupid or compromised to even realize it, Russert is nothing but a government/corporate spokeman. He is simply a propagandist, a quisling, a willing and happy tool of the powerful. He is an utter disgrace.

We all know you are in the tank for obama; and you didn't let us down with your shameless plugs for him on Bill Maher last week. You have lost any journalistic integrity you may have ever had. One less place to see you will be a treat. FYI Tracy Ullman is a better arianna than you are!

And for the record, I am not a russert fan. He is a panderer who happens to have a weekly show and apparently no one to keep him in check.

why, I saw Anne Coultergeist on CNN's Glen Beck program...since she too was banned, Arianna is welcome back on both Keith Olbermann's Countdown and Dan Abrahms programs...Tweety is a bushie, can't handle the truth.

Oh Arianna, please don't go Republican light on me. I never thought Reagan was a good president. He squandered the promise of America for ideology and his crony capitalism buddies.

Ronald Reagan was just as much an idiot as George Bush is.

Reagan ran a presidency by making everybody feel good. Reagan's policies were illusions that offered false securities. Reagan started the grand free trade unregulated market experiment that moved the country from a creditor nation to a debtor nation. Reagan always looked sharp but presented politics in government-is-bad with a little racist overtones for the good old boys down South.

It was during his administration that jobs increasingly went overseas; increasing debt covered tax cuts; foreign workers crossed the borders away from economic and military repression by governments supported by Reagan (Central America); Iran-Contra scandal (which produced a crop of today's Repub media hit-men); denied AIDS-HIV funding; thought air pollution was caused by trees; believed star wars was the road to peace; tried to put a death nail in trade unions (air-traffic controllers strike); started to forget were he put Nancy .... I could go on.

What's with giving these conservatives a place at our table? Both Obama and Hillary go on FOX noise. Arianna tries to sell a few extra books to conservative independents. Is it because of a tight Democratic primary of mainly red state Indiana?

What the hell, I don't know.

Arianna, keep doing what you're doing, beautiful. I'm with ya baby for the most part. Keep pissing off Russert. Russert deserves it -- but please don't defend Reagan because you don't want to alienate a few knuckle-heads.

It's the adams apple that turns me off. That and the big hands. Surgeons and hormones can do wonders these days; but, they can't hide the man hands.

I don't understand why folks aren't more direct in saying Colter has changed from a man to a woman. Is it because it's not "politically correct" to do so -- at least among liberals?

It seems so clear that she's had a sex change operation. Folks seem to "imply" this, but no one comes right out & says it.

It's old news. No point in discussing the details.

It just blows my mind when I realize that people like Tim Russert are in such powerful positions, and use that power to stiffle the news. It sure isn't like we didn't already know Russert was one of the worst offenders, but I have to wonder how he lives with himself. He's intelligent enough to have seen the manipulation in the run up to the war, and doesn't Russert feel his responsiblilty for making the Bush fiasco possible? Tim Russert needs to read Ariana's book, and clean up his act! Thanks to cheney, we know even the Bush White House had many laughs at Russert's expense! What a tool! I've lost any respect for Russert, and hope he passes on MTP to someone with ethics!

What do you expect from a defense contractor. Does anyone believe TV is free? It's a marketing tool for big money. Yeah even Keith is. He's playing to a demographic. That's why it's so important to keep the web free. GE like the others Disney, Viacom, and News Corp are working really hard to take control of the net. Blogs, a free exchange of ideas is a threat to their dominance and marketing power. At the end of the day only help the one percent.

Maybe the self-serving, garbage, typo-ridden, celebutard blog she has her name on has something to do with it. They do plenty of censoring on that site so no need for any indignation. Who really cares.

What a presence!
What an ally!
What a story!

Huffington Post has now surpassed Drudge in hits!!!

Give it up for Arianna!

Fuck the MSM. The internet is providing a more than adequate counter to the MSM. Only problem is to get people to understand that the MSM is simply corporatist infotainment.

Thank you Arianna for taking that WATB Russert on!! He is hugely responsible for the demise of American journalis, and all while getting a free ride. He needs to be brought back to earth and face up to important and necessary criticism. He needs to be exposed, yesterday!

Thank you Arianna, and CL, and all the other brother and sister sites for giving liberals excellent fora!!

Television news media is a failure. I can't stand very much of it anymore. Arianna speaks her mind. Lawrence Spivak and the originators of Meet the Press would be stunned and aghast at the quality of journalism on the current Meet the Press show. The MTP shows with Carville, Matalin, Shrum and the other guy are a complete waste of time. MSNBC fills 4 shows each weekday night with similar pap. Then the rest of the time they fill in with prison shows. What a network....

Russert illustrates the state that NBC/MSNBC is in. They listen to him! He does a miserable job on Meet the Press, can't take criticism of any kind, and is considered a friend by Dick Cheney. If I were Huffington, I'd increase the complaints. Russert thinks he's the decider.

Marc Sadoff's picture

You can write to MSNBC about MTP here- http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6872152/

Here's what I wrote:

I"m very disappointed that Ms. Huffington has been disinvited from Countdown and Morning Joe, revealing a lack of self confidence for both Mr. Russert and MSNBC.

You either meet her criticisms directly, or you can try to run away and avoid her comments. It's sad that a show like Meet the Press, known for simply bringing inconsistencies of political persons to light and giving them a chance to respond cannot tolerate some criticism.

I'll continue with Olbermann, but you may deduct two eyeballs from your Sunday morning 8 am PST viewership.

If there is some reason, other than Tim Russert's fragile ego, that explains these recent decisions I'd like to hear it. I don't fault Mr. Russert if he decides not to have her on his show. It's MSNBC's decision to disinvite Ms. Huffington form other shows that indicates your excessive sensitivity. It is the proof of what she claims. When will you cover the pentagon spoon fed generals NY Times story?

Otay's picture

Arianna should make a stink of this, and mention that the wingnut welfare recipients are welcome to promote their books on NBC and all other outlets, but there is a double standard here when it comes to smart left-wing writers.

mystic's picture

When Arriana justifiably and correctly accuses the MSM for being complicit and collusional with our crisis and hence responsible, the butts of these accusations get the wind blown out from their sails. Russert is just one. Charlie Rose is another. Charlie kept interrupting Arriana last night on his show, wouldn't let her complete one single sentence, speaking over her rudely and not liking the implication that he, the exemplification of a corporate fascist, was complicit. Arriana, always the lady, smart as a whip, was polite but she still succeeded in getting her point across. I intend reading her book. Naomi Wolf's book "The End Of America" is brilliant too, almost mandatory reading. If we as a nation are sinking into the abyss, at least we should understand why.

sas @ 113: "The Huffington Post is a vile website. I’m glad they cancelled her bookings".

Huffington happens to be one of the most popular websites in America. You don't "just" get that popular for nothing. Truth is what sells it. One thread had over 6000 posts two days ago...Can't remember which one, but I read it because the people who post seem extremely knowledgeable and articulate and interesting and have good ideas which I don't always agree with but that's expected. I suspect a lot of famous professional people (congressmen and authors for instance?) post there too. Just a thought.

no pity for Huff here.

(hey all, long time lurker first time poster!) 8)

And Ariana censored Shelly Drobny from Huffington post. Sounds like an even deal to me! ;-)

wakemewhenitsover's picture

I think Huff ought to update "Pigs at the Trough" and include a chapter on Russert et al. Let's get real here. The same fat cats who installed the Bushies in order to privatize our executive branch and thus our Supreme Court moved Russert and his ilk into the same zip codes as the scumbags that are raping this world of life. And all in the name of quarterly profits. It's in their personal interest NOT to disseminate the truth. Russert read a laundry list of Obama dramas including "not putting his hand on his heart for the pledge." Uh, it was the National Anthem. Do you think he didn't know better? And then, "bitter?" Damn right! Bitter over the failures of our leaders to improve our lives and causes people to vote their fears and their hobbies. This was a reasoned observation poorly put and never aired in its entirety, not by Russert anyway. And Michelle's,"For the first time in my adult life I'm proud..." What she said was, "...I'm r e a l l y proud of my country." That's hyperbolic, not unpatriotic. I'm so disgusted that if KO doesn't speak up about this Huff thing, I might even have to tune him out.

Robert's picture

tanglewood @ 35:

I stopped watching Russert years ago after he had Cheney on and allowed the no good bastard to lie continuously without even a hint of resistance. Ever since then I've always referred to that pudgy coward's Sunday propaganda fest "Press the Meat".

Terrie W's picture

Adrianna calls it like she sees it--that gets one in trouble nowadays. As for the scum sucking bottom feeders like Russert, Scarborough, Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly, et. al., ad nauseum, I do not listen to them (unless under duress like the debates)and find anything that oozes from their fecal-coated lips to be nothing but pandering lies/propaganda meant to appease their oberfurhers and/or meant to deceive the population.

Personally I wish they all would just crawl back under whatever rocks they came slithering from under and never return to journalism. All the real journalists have gone the way of the dinosaurs. What we have now are not journalists but corporate slaves mouthing whatever trash their masters want uttered. Disgusting.

As for Keith Olberman, they keep him alive to serve their ship so he rows well and lives....for now. Once he has served his (read that as their) purpose, he will be 'uninvited' or 'cancelled' as well.

I did not see you in the marines. Your are just a coward like all the chicken hawks who talk like Tarzan and fight worse than Jane. NBC has a lot of nerve to censure A.Huffington who is smarter than Russert, is a better dresser than russert, has more hair and is a better dancer than russert. Sorry potato face but that is the truth!

Lib2DaBone's picture

Tim Russert is everything bad, nasty, wrong and unfixable with our great country. Tim Russert is THE PROBLEM.. not the Solution.

Martin Kane's picture

Tim Russert,is from a South Buffalo blue collar working family and his father Russ is a wonderful man. Being a TV person Tim can not engage real ideas, or fathom the depths of the scum he associates with,Chenney for one example. Truth be told MSNBC is owned by General Electric, who has a few billion dollars at stake with their ownership of Raitheon and their anti-balistic missle factory.

Under the radar Tim is a right winger, who like the present administration loves fascism, preaches it daily and can only mimic a real journalist. He trivializes presidential runners in order to carry the ball for corporate control and delights in asking stupid questions. Perhaps that is why he reports only what has been scripted for him. He should go to liars anynomous.

What a bunch of crap! he is a bought and paid for right wing political pundit! His interviews suck! His so called big shot status on NBC is a joke, and that's one of the reasons I don't watch MSNBC! Meet the press is sad example of journalism and is nothing more than an outlet to denigrate progressive views while spewing right wing propaganda! Russert's future in journalism will be swept into the dust bin of history once this crooked administration is out of power! And, that can't happen soon enough for me!
