The consensus on Capitol Hill is in: Vito is finito
By SilentPatriot Wednesday May 07, 2008 11:00am
Being from New York, this one kinda hits home for me -- even though I'm from Long Island, not Staten Island. Congressman Vito Fossella (D R- NY) has landed himself in big, big trouble. Not only was he picked up on a DUI charge in Virginia, but a sex scandal seems to be emerging as the details start coming out. Fossella, who was driving at 2x the legal limit, has given conflicting accounts about where he was going when he got pinched. First, he claimed to be picking his sick daughter at her house. The only problem is that the address he gave officers was that of retired Lt. Col. Laura Fay, who ended up retrieving him from the police station.

It gets worse. From the WaPo:
Fossella was specific with the arresting officer about where he was headed. He gave a street name where he said he was picking up his daughter. That street, it turns out, is the same street where retired Lt. Col. Laura Fay lives with her three-year-old daughter. Fay, according to the New York Daily News, picked up Fossella from the police station.
When asked by the Daily News earlier this week whether Fossella fathered Fay's daughter, Fossella's crisis communications consultant, Susan Del Percio, declined to answer. "This is a demeaning and highly inappropriate question," she said.
If it weren't true, why not just deny it?
You may be asking yourself: Why does this matter to me? Well, it just so happens that Fossella occupies a hotly contested seat that could very well go blue this year.
I sympathize with the drunk-driving adulterer, but it doesn't seem likely he'll be able to defend his seat this year.
UPDATE: Turns out that Fossella has admitted to being the baby daddy.

Now that Hillary is toast, can we all focus on cleaning out Congress. Vito is a start. One down. Now we need to trim the Republicons and pro-war democrats down, so that the new president and the country can be moved in the right direction.
Let's start with no-impeachment, pour-our-tax- dollars-into-Iraq Pelosi. She has a real challenger, Shirley Golub, in the June 3d California primary.
If Pelosi is knocked out by San Franciscans on June 3d, it will send the fear of God into the other pro-war democrats who have done next to nothing to stop Bush and Cheney's fiasco.
how could you leave out the best part of the nydaily news article. vito and his pal, brian sure know how to have fun.:
Fossella roused his pal, who made it to the men's room, where he passed out again in a chair outside the bathroom door. Tavern staff woke Brian, who returned to the main room and promptly belly-flopped onto a table, Hahn said.
"The table's base was broken," Hahn said. "They offered to pay for it, but we said, 'That's all right, just leave.'"
Why are voters surprised when republicans act like republicans?
These crashes are getting really bad John. And chronic.
This last was almost one FULL HOUR
[We know. We're trying to get in too :)-Sitemonitor]
So he's drunk, 86'd and he drives? What's wrong buddy? Not enough money for cab fare?
That cheapness will probably be the least money you did not spend to save your career.
Bub-bye.
NEXT!
Yikes! When the morally bankrupt behavior of liberals, the gays, immigrants, and atheists starts infecting the Republicans, the stalwarts and guiding light of our society, America is really in trouble.
John McCain please save us!!!!
"it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be able to defend his seat this year."
Why not? It's OK if you're a Republican.
We don't care about his sex life, we want to know where he stands on the issues facing Americans today. Like health-care, and the price of gas, and the war in Iraq.
You know, this discussion does not help my kids. I think we gotta move forward.
That foto of him, he looks pretty bummed.
What's a matter bud, gonna lose your pension?
You sympathize with the drunk-driving adulterer?
You're a far more sympathetic person than I, SP.

Try putting your server folks on notice. If you can't cut it, we'll have to find someone who can.
Thats usually does it.
[It's not the servers. We've been under attack for awhile-days weeks-I'm not sure. But all the video problems were hacker-based. I'm thinking this morning was too. Our server folks are very diligent and work hard to keep the site accessable-Sitemonitor]
dennis @ 8:
Good point - some other important issues:
- who's his pastor and what does he say?
- how often does he wear his flag pin?
- does he place his hand on his heart during the national anthem?
- is he another muslim?
Jay Severin Has A Small Pen1s @ 6:
This is really funny! (I hope you were trying to be.)
Ooooh. I'm sure that makes the folks who run this website very happy.
I can't WAIT to read their update-Veto Fossella...hahaha
Is C&L being attacked? It's been going down a lot lately. So have other political sites I visit (DWT, for one).
Am I being paranoid, or is this coordinated?
[I don't know if you are paranoid, I'm not a doctor :). But yes we have been getting it in the neck for awhile now (scroll up-I answered someone else's question-Sitemonitor]
people are horny...rep and dem
i think this post is a bit tabloid for C&L
i know its about the hypocrisy of moral majority right wingers...but that ain't news!!!
The newt, the biggest hypocrite of them all, seems to be losing his "moral majority" lately with sex and other legal problems in Congress.
What a joke. A "good catholic".....makes a good political leader, eh?
I'm enjoying this hypocrisy brought to light. What a bunch of f*cking idiots.
Hee, hee. Pardon the glee, but this is funny.
I would have loved to have seen the expression on the guy's face when he sobered up and realized he had spilled the beans about his adultery and his illegit daughter.
In the words of Bugs Bunny: What a maroon. What a nincompoop.
me @ 3:
Over the years, Republicans built a giant "family friendly" facade to hide all their dirty little sins behind. And now it's crumbling down due to lack of maintenance, thus exposing their true colors. Even their blind followers see the cesspool back there and they dont like it.
At least a rehab clinic somewhere will get an economic stimulus from Vito.
L.A. Confidential @ 11:
vast right wing conspiracy ?
Another "family values" guy?
Chico Hussein @ 19:
Blind they must be, because it's been pretty clear to me for a very long time.
As Republican Members of the House of Representatives and as citizens seeking to join that body we propose not just to change its policies, but even more important, to restore the bonds of trust between the people and their elected representatives.
That is why, in this era of official evasion and posturing, we offer instead a detailed agenda for national renewal, a written commitment with no fine print.
This year's election offers the chance, after four decades of one-party control, to bring to the House a new majority that will transform the way Congress works. That historic change would be the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public's money. It can be the beginning of a Congress that respects the values and shares the faith of the American family.
Like Lincoln, our first Republican president, we intend to act "with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right." To restore accountability to Congress. To end its cycle of scandal and disgrace. To make us all proud again of the way free people govern themselves.
On the first day of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority will immediately pass the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:
FIRST, require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;
SECOND, select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
THIRD, cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
FOURTH, limit the terms of all committee chairs;
FIFTH, ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
SIXTH, require committee meetings to be open to the public;
SEVENTH, require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
EIGHTH, guarantee an honest accounting of our Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting.

He'll first have to get past the denial stage.
Apparently his office has now answered the "demeaning and highly inappropriate question."
surely i'm not the first to ask (haven't read comments yet), but
why would you "sympathize with the drunk-driving adulterer"???
i don't get it.

Is the g.o.p. theme song "Whoops I Did It Again"?
SilentPatriot asks: If it weren’t true, why not just deny it?
Watch where you are going with a question like this. If the press had asked him, "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" would you still suggest that he is evasive because he refuses to answer the question.
I do not sympathize with an alleged drunk-driving adulterer, but I do respect that there are some questions only deserve a refusal to answer.
As dennis pointed out, we should be asking him where he stands on the war in Iraq, troop levels, relations with other countries, the situation in Darfur and Tibet, and health care for Americans.
marko @ 16:
I agree. If we're talking about morality here, let's not just limit it to GOP fucking. In the past several days Hillary Clinton and her cohorts have been increasingly turning her losing campaign into one of race baiting, e.g. her comment in USA Today that WHITE working people are voting for her or Begala's run-in with Donna Brazile when he said that the Democrats don't want to become the party solely of AAs and pointy-headed intellectuals. Morality is not limited to the sphere of sex, and you should be stepping out and covering important stories like this on C & L, John Amato. It's not a case of GOP, all bad, Democrats, all good.
"Morality for thee, but not for me."
- Typical conservative
dennis @ 8:
Personal character is part of the equation. If a man lies to his wife and children and secretly carries on an affair and fathers a child, why should we trust him to be honest with the American people. Every candidate is vetted for character, this Congressman should not get a "pass". He gets off relatively easy since his term is about up & he simply decides to not run again.
marko @ 16:
Blue Lensman @ 12:
This is indicative of a man's true character. When we've seen this happen, usually there is a whole nasty public abuse going on as well. I mean, look, he's betrayed the people he supposedly loves most (wife and kids). Why would he give two poops for a load of mooks he doesn't even know?
People pay attention to this stuff, not the real issues. Like:
-Source Veto Fossella
And there you have it. He's proving my point. He cares more for fancy lunches and perks than a load of trashy people in NOLA, or than those morons that sign up to help their country in times of great need.
me @ 15:
I don't suppose it can be traced back to the RNC or Rove?
Rove seems to be particularly good at covering his tracks.

Indeed, you've hit the nail on the head miss kitty.
When the GOP attacks Dems for likewise actions, they leave themselves wide open for the same.
They can't have it both ways, as much as they try.It all comes down to hypocricy.
NYT is reporting that he's owned up to the affair - he's toast.

According to the NY Daily News, it is his love child...
Hmmm... I think it's highly inappropriate for a politician to have a crisis communications consultant on staff. I mean... what does that bespeak?!
Folks, dont lose sight of what's important to Americans ...
Rev Wright hates America and Sen. Obama attended his church for 20 years.
wash, rinse, repeat ...

Blah, blah, blah.
Listen, the guy has just been caught doing three of the worst things any politician can do to his own career. Drunk driving, an affair and a child out of wedlock. He gets nailed for all three on the same day!!
The guy's a triple moron.
I seem to remember Clinton got impeached for just one of these acts.
And you want the media to ask Fosella about his positions on Iraq and health care?
Yeah, sure.
Go Democrats.
Actually he apparently admitted to fathering the kid today
Jay Severin Has A Small Pen1s @ 6:
YES, YES. YES. GREAT COMMENT.
Trow da bum out !!!
Put another Democrat in. We need to take advantage of everything to take over majorities in Both Houses of Congress.
Well as a New Yorker, I'll be glad to see a Democrat take the last standing repug House seat in the city.
Now we just need to take out Peter King in Long Island. He's a real tool.
I bet Vito was shaking in his boots in 2006. It was a Democratic year and he was the only congressional candidate with ads on the air. Funny enough, he never mentioned that he was a repug in any ad.
Restore the Constitution @ 1:
You're not gonna take out Speaker Pelosi. She has that seat until she's good and ready to leave.
How can ANYONE vote for a Republican??? I don't care if you don't vote for a Dem but voting for what is essentially a mob crime family? Wow.
I'm not Italian. Please translate "shtupping."
Oooh. Those poooor Republicans. Bless their hearts. (snickers)
My fogged brain seems to recall hearing of a web site that lists the Republican Hall of Shame. Any of you C&L affectionados able to confirm my recollection and if so maybe provide a link? Thanks
Peter King is next. He has to go.
Does anyone have a screenshot of this guy and Faux news labeling him a Dem?
marko @ 16:
This post is to let Democrats know that here is another opportunity to put a dem in a seat held by a repug. I'm sure there's one or two Staten Islanders who visit this site who will benifit from this info.
remember the hubub when Patrick Kennedy was busted drunk driving? What a scandalous scandal! The outrage! .... but when Vito et al, do it.... Yawn!.....
IOKIYAR!
mr.ed @ 59:
I'm not Italian either but I don't believe "shtupping" is Italian. I think it's closer to German for uh getting it on.
Count me on the side of those who don't get your "sympathy" for this guy.
Anyone who drives while drunk deserves everything that comes at him/her.
Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who said he was one of Fossella’s closest friends in Congress, said the political future of his New York colleague can be dealt with in due time.
“What happens politically can be decided later,” King said. “Right now all we should be thinking about is what is best for him and his family.”
Ummmm....Excuse me, Rep. King...but don't you mean familIES!
Bunch of friggin hypocrites!
I'll say it again--any public servant who leads a double-life is a prime target for exploitation by foreign governments.
Buh-bye Vito--although I think it is unlikely a Dem will be voted into the 13th.
Awwww, did he cry on the House floor? *sob*
Interesting that the family values crowd are always the ones using them least.
As a Staten Islander there was only a matter of time before Fossella was going to be exposed for what he is. Steve Harrison, the democratic challenger, ran against Fossella in 2006 and lost by only 13% while being outspent by over a million dollars. This seat could very well swing Harrison's way if he gets it together.
Now will some reporter, please, please, ask the crisis communications consultant, Susan Del Percio, the one who said “This is a demeaning and highly inappropriate question”, why it was so inappropriate. I mean since her boss has admitted it's true. And if she doesn't answer or changes the topic, ask again, and again.
Buh Bye....
I waiting for Faux News to report this as Vito Fossella, a New York Democrat...
LegallyBlonde @ 75:
Im sure thier engineers are working on that at this very moment.
It's nice the Empire State GOPpers are sensitive to Fossella's needs. Clearly, they just needed to rake Gov. Spitzer over the coals and call for his dismissal for (a) breaking the law and (b) cheating on his wife to realize how awful that was. I'm sure they'll give lots of breathing room to the next NY Dem to find himself (or herself) in such a pickle.
ccf @ 38:
I had realised what kind of 'family values' these hypocrites were when I met Anita Bryant way back when in Selma Alabama when she was advocating to some kkkreestyans ''What we need to do is round all these fags and .....'' at the mall.
I told her she needed to get herself laid by a real hetero man, since her husband was gay. You are spiteful and mean spirited and perhaps you should really try praying for some peace instead of making hate.
I thought I was gonna be arrested (and did get hauled in on 'suspicion' no charges just suspicion...but I can't stand bullies, I have had run ins with the then mayor of Montgomery as well as D James Kennedy And I did ask each why they did not have Christ in their heart instead of bile
LegallyBlonde @ 75:
Yes, and we will see how much time that ahole Sean Hannity spends bashing Vito on his show. When Patrick Kennedy had his troubles, Hannity spent almost the whole show making fun of him and his family for all their drinking problems. Remember Gov. Spitzer and how Hannity called him an adulterer and scum, let's see what he calls this guy- if he mentions him at all. Hypocrites
Rethug family values -- gotta love it!!!
Democratsrule @ 79:
We all know Hannity won't bring this up at all. He's a tremendous world class hypocrite. That's worked out well for him being a repug mouthpiece. I wonder if 'ol Vito was around in '98 and voted to impeach Clinton.
Some one asked for the repub hall of shame. I don't know if this is it but
http://www.republicanoffenders.com/
It doesn't matter if they are Rep or Dem. If they are not doing the job we are asking of them then we don't need them...vote them out and that includes Pelosi. Rep or Dem time to clean house. She has not done shit since becoming speaker. Folks we need someone to work for all of us not just to go along party lines. I am wondering how Hillary will do once she comes up for reelection...I have a feeling she will be in for a fight to keep her seat. I am a registered Dem but I won't have any problem voting for a Rep if I like his ideas and record. First and formost I am a American and I want the best our country can be. Please everyone keep posting on these sites and share your views, that is what built this country and what will make it great once again.
my 2¢
Another drunk, philandering Republican. Who woulda thought?
tpahornet @ 82:
Agreed. Pelosi's a rubber chicken. But the point here is that we have the family values party showing it's true colors over and over again. I don't think we need to mix the issues. I would say that the party that has spent the last 30+ years marketing itself to churchgoing family values types, and then pulling a bait-and-switch needs loud and constant exposure.
Drunk off his ass and going to pick up his daughter. Just as a father; this makes me sick to my stomach. I hope the local CPS office has the guts to fry this guy.

Well, you know what? The way he came out with the "admission" to his paternity makes him a stand-up guy in my book. I'm not saying his wife should look the other way, but in the spirit of "maintaining focus on the issues" I'm going to say I'd prefer this NOT be made an issue in the upcoming election.
