McCain Finally Rejects Rod Parsley Endorsement

How's the underside of that bus looking, Rod?

ABC:

Sen. John McCain rejected the endorsement of a second controversial pastor Thursday, saying there is no place for the Rev. Rod Parsley’s comments about Islam.

“I believe there is no place for that kind of dialogue in America, and I believe that even though he endorsed me, and I didn't endorse him, the fact is that I repudiate such talk, and I reject his endorsement,” McCain said in a statement.

The rejection of Parsley’s endorsement comes several hours after McCain rejected the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee, who made controversial comments about the Holocaust and Catholics.

Of course this is the right thing for McCain to do, but didn't he vet these people? Oh wait, he probably did then realized the political capital he could squeeze out of them was worth it. He does, after all, need to build his credibility with the Christian right. Unfortunately for him, almost every prominent right-wing religious figure is out of their mind.

HAAA-ha

McSame flip-flops ?

WOW, I dunno what to say !

I wonder if republican polling is showing that he's not getting the Xtofascists vote in spite of these "endorsements" and so there's no point in keeping these "endorsements" on the books? Don't think he's really catching fire with the Jebus crowd anyway.

Don't slam Islam.

Look for him to reject Cindy McCain's endorsement because, well, she is a c&nt

"Of course this is the right thing for McCain to do, but didn’t he vet these people?"

A vet that doesn't vet?

If you believe that Jesus was the son of a God, you are seriously mentally deficient. If you were to Vet every Christian in America, you'd quickly realize that anyone out there who is a "believer" is a serious victim of brainwashing. And every one actively preaching the jesus brand of jewish mythology is 100 times worse than the simple sheep who believe this crap.

Starts his campaign with a biggest crowd of losers, jokers, assholes and criminals the world has ever seen in one place [save for a shrub family reunion] and then spends the next months slowly dumping each of them unceremoniously one by one because the media and his pr people tell him to.

They should have made his entire campaign a reality show. 'Under the bus' Each week cranky mcgrampa curses, rants, snores and stumbles his way through embarrassment after embarrassment and at the end of each episode he throws one unlucky contestant under the bus. Who ever is left at the end gets a huge no-bid contract, an ambassadorship at the tropical destination of his/her choice and a coupon to use at the senate's official escort service.

If McCain rejects the endorsement of everyone who said something evil, stupid or wrong, he would eliminate almost all of the republican party.

Theres always the endorsement of the man wearing a top hat who carries a measure stick to be had.
I bet he follows McInfirm around a lot these days.

McCain: Rod, here's what we do bud. I'll make an official statement rejecting your position. The msm will hype it up, the public will lap it up, I'll climb another rung, you climb another rung. . . .

Parsley: Hahahaha excellent. Love it! I'll put my best deaf and dumb look on right away! Ha Ha!

What's the blow-back for this gonna be like? Do you think he went to these guys under the table and told them that he still had their interests in mind, and just needed to publicly rebuke them for the sake of the party? I mean, in all actuality, I'm sure (as much as these guys are insane) they are pragmatic enough to know that their shit doesn't fly with at least a majority of the country. They're probably blessing this move by McCain, and cursing the godless sinners who don't believe in the gospel. Whatever fucking gets them to the holy grail of reversing Roe v. Wade.

And the next president is quite clearly going to either be there to see that happen, or be there to prevent it.

He needs to stop courting the fake Christian morons.

Tell me that Parsley isn't closeted....go ahead, I dare ya!

Never underestimate the devious nature of the cons.

I think McCain is more wrong!

I do not like wright’s comments but I think there are 2 types of relationships for the media to explore

Obama had Wright in his life to build on his FAITH and commitment to GOD!

Media built their relationship as political views.

I am Catholic, my priest helps me with my faith but our world or political views are very different.

Example
I support gay rights!

While my priest is against any gay rights! Does that make less catholic for not following the church?
NO, I know were I stand in my faith and my relationship with GOD

While me and my Priest have different views, Why I do not leave my church is because he has strong guidance and wisdom about the spiritual faith that I seek.

McCain had NO spiritual connection with these men, so why seek endorsements from guys with these types of views?

Here's a concept for you candidates: Separate church and state! When will you learn that these loonies are Trouble, with a Capital T, and that rhymes with P and that.....

McCain doesn't need his wing-nut preachers anymore. He's already sown up the nomination.

Parsley has been used and abused.

McCain, you're such a slime-ball. You can't even renounce your endorsements on camera.

Pretty soon the Straight Talk Express bus is going to have to be abandoned due to the number of bodies under it.

SilentPatriot, your last sentence in the post says it all. They are all either criminals or nut cases otherwise they wouldn't be doing what they are doing. Bottom line for all of them is the money. They'll say anything, no matter how bizarre, and find someone out there who believes them enough to hand over their hard earned money to them in hopes of getting heaven insurance.

Perhaps he believed the media when they said "they would get to him in due course" and is dumping now before any damage can be done. Try to do a " "Wright" on him now and he just has to say "hey look I rejected them" and all but his most ardent detractors will say "fair enough".

It is fun reading the right wing blogs this morning.

I am curious which is driving which, Dollar, Dow or Nymex.
interesting three way chicken egg scenario.

This Wall Street Journal article reporting McCain's rejection of Hagee's support contains two real gems:
McCain Rejects Pastor's Support

(#1) First two paragraphs:

John McCain rejected the endorsement of the Rev. John C. Hagee Thursday after an old sermon was unearthed in which the evangelical pastor seemed to suggest that God had created the Holocaust to drive Jews to Israel.

Mr. Hagee, who endorsed the Republican candidate in February, delivered a sermon in the late 1990s in which he appeared to explain how something good could come from a tragic event.

yup .. "seemed to suggest" .. and .. "appeared to explain" ..

Not at all like Hagee actually said it .. nope ..

(#2) And:

The sermon was posted on Talk to Action, a blog critical of the Christian right, and later republished on the Huffington Post Web site .
..
David Brog, executive director of Christians United for Israel, a nonprofit started by Mr. Hagee, said Mr. Hagee compared the Nazis with the hunters in the Book of Jeremiah to explain how God could allow such a tragedy to occur.
..
The decision to end the relationship between Sen. McCain and Mr. Hagee was a "meeting of the minds," said Mr. Brog.

"These bloggers are never going to stop attacking John Hagee or John McCain unless and until they separate from one another," Mr. Brog said. "Everyone understands this has become a horrible distraction."

BLOGGERS RULE!!

I'm really worried. If McSame keeps this up the Repub "brain trust" will find a way to dump him---health, age, flip/flopitis etc. He's the weakest, most marginal candidate they could send in as a sacrificial lamb, and we could lose him.

This is one interesting unexplored aspect that I hope legal scholars would comment on.

So, Hagee "withdraws" his endorsement so that he's not a distraction to McCain, so McCain can go about addressing the serious issues of this campaign. Isn't the withdrawal of endorsement really just another way of saying Hagee really wants McCain to win--i.e., an endorsement?

For the past several decades, the Right has had a monopoly over religious expression. This is a very obvious, no duh statement, certainly, but hear me out. This revelation isn't going to stick to McCain nearly as easily as the Reverend Wright stuff stuck to Obama unless we redefine our own individual spiritual expression.

People of faith (and I include myself) on the left are correct in calling this out McCain's pastor problems as a double standard, but if we really would care to put our money where our mouth is, I'd love to see us to dare to state our faith openly instead of keeping it a private matter. And even for people who are not theists--the best way to keep someone from stigmatizing you and what you believe is to express what you believe in a public and day-to-day forum, even if that might make you a little uncomfortable.

The GOP is the party of exclusion, bigots, homophobes, racists, hatemongers and Christ-o-fascists. Maverick Straightalk can reject all the reich wing extremist endorsements he wants but it won't change the fact he is part of that party.

Robertson, Hagee, Parsley. All loco. There are others, but it's pointless to waste time obsessing over these people.

I believe in equal protection under the law in a democratic, pluralistic society. At Focus on the Family, I had this discussion with James Dobson's policy people, and they basically support equal protection under the law, too. Some would debate whether civil unions are necessary for that, or whether other legal protections are adequate. And that's a fair discussion.

McCain has done and supported some nasty things in his career in Congress, some people have memories, even some former R types.

Yeah I can already hear the crickets.

I just don't see why McCain appears to be ditching the religious right. It makes no strategic sense especially since its looking like it will be McCain against Obama. I can see why he rejected Hagee but Parsley's comments could have been spun by those on the right easily. Obama has been reaching out to Christians while McCain appears to be throwing one of the largest GOP bases under the bus. His foreign policy experience and foreign policy hawks will only get him so far with the voters. I just don't see what McCain thinks he will accomplish by alienating an entire voting block.

When did this thread migrate from Parsley to Pasta ?

Everything that Bushco has touched in the last seven years has turned to sh1t,
the only thing McCain could run on in november is fear, hatred, racism, and sexism,
theres nothing else in the Republican election book.

Good point, but this is the GOP we're talking about here remember.

ALL they have on Obama is the Rev Wright. They have no other ammo. So to play the 'Pastor' card all summer, they need to make sure that McSame does not have a Pastor issue that would dampen their efforts.

I know, it's insane at best but like I said, it's the GOP we're dealing with.

Vetting is really not the question.Senator McCain sought these endorsements.By making vetting an issue it says"ok Senator your staff is incompetent and you are a victim".
The reality ,as I see it,is these endorsements were cynically and deliberately sought to curry favor with a group that the McCain campaign believes it needs.
Further, now he is going throw them away in an attempt to pose as "good" guy.
I don't buy it.He is as cynical an opportunistic as any out there unfortunately. When will he be understood for what he really is.
Perhaps the reason that the religious-right have distrusted him is because they understood from the beginning that John McCain has serious character issues.
Let's give our neighbors on the right the credit they deserve for knowing what the smell is that comes from Senator McCain and his campaign.

May I suggest a solution to McCain's problem of vetting his Christian endorsers that might be acceptable to all?
It was a perfect solution that to determine a persons true Christianity.
For complete methods and instructions, see : The Salem, Massachusetts Witch Trails of 1692.
It is a wonderful test that worked perfectly and Christians seemed to fully approve of the results.

Flipping And Flopping To The General

After what the Republicans did to John Kerry in 2004, they are now fielding the biggest flip flopper in American History. Will the Democrats be able to take the gloves off and make John McCain pay for this tacky tactic? We will know soon.

This attack should have a natural feel to it. It's should come easy because it is the truth. No need to "fudge" here and there. The opposition only need to load the tapes up and show the different McCains. There is enough history to make McCain look like he's is suffering from Multi Personality Disorder. In reality one can make a real case he does have such a disorder. That is what the Republicans would do with the material out on McCain's flip flopping history.

When you think of what the Republicans did to the Democrats during their primaries, you have got to come to the table with a game just as effective to win in November. I watched the Republicans drive a wedge in the Democratic Party when they were competing against each other for the nomination. It was so clever, they are today talking about how many Clinton supporters will not support Barack Obama and how many Obama supporters will not support Clinton should she come up with a miracle. It's time the Democrats counter with some voodoo of their own.

To paint McCain as a possible sufferer of Multi Personality Disorder is fitting for a nice counter to what the Republicans are capable of. I hope the Democrats have a stomach for it.

if we had an honest media they would have castigated and exposed these non-christian cult leaders decades ago

And McCain and Parsley will continue laughing all the way to the bank over how most people are so easily manipulated.

you guys are way too cynical....each of these episodes underscores how incompetent, incapable, and undignified mccain is.....and that's how the public is reading it, however his media buddies spin it......

the election in november will be a measure of racism in america....we know 25% of the country are morons, and believe bush has been great...all votes in excess of that 25% come from people who can't stand n****rs, plain and simple.....

I don't think McCain is really even that interested in being President. I can't imagine what idiot would want to be the (R) Presidential candidate after Bush. It's like going onstage after GG Allin. If there's anybody left who wants to see a show, they're there for the gawking obscenity of it all and little else.

McCain wants to act like someone important for a few months before he retires to obscurity as his party, co-oped by some of the most-hated people on the planet since the National Socialists, dwindles in influence and finally fades from the stage.

Looks like the Republicans are systematically rejecting all the extreme religious wackos. Good for them. I don't think this will help them very much in November, but it's a good thing for them to do.

Moonies or $cientologists, two church/cults with magical DC protection and money to burn for politicos.
The Moonies are a vaguely benign (as far as I know) money grubbing bunch, but the $tology lot of by all reports whackjobs and nasty to boot,
in a sane world with a non corrupt DoJ they would have been investigated and prosecuted out of existence long ago, this speaks volumes as to their political protection and influence in high places.

I just looked up the Licking County, Oh auditor's page and did a search on Pastor Parsley. He lives on 16 acres in a house and property valued at nearly $1.1 million. In Licking County, that's a lot of house. Next door are two other properties he owns, one is 8 acres. Nice property. On MinistryWatch, Parsley is quoted as saying,"I just love to talk about money; I just love to talk about your money. Let me be very clear - I want your money. I deserve it. This church deserves it." That kind of statement from a purported man of God makes me more nervous than a jackass railing about Muslims.

This was the plan all alone. When November come, no one in the media is going to remember those fucking religious lunatics.

One quick correction: that was Fairfield County, not Licking.

Nice the way McCain words that - even though he endorsed me - as if Parsley was eager to throw his weight behind McCain, and John, being the kind soul he is, generously allowed it to happen. Of course, the reality is more like McCain went grovelling on his knees to these nutjobs for their endorsements, but hey, tomayto tomahto, right?

'but think of the poor little children monies'

How are these "Pastors" allowed to keep their tax-exempt status? As I recall a Baptist church had theirs removed just for preaching about Peace?

The reaction of Hagee and Parsley should be interesting. If McCain's truly "throwing them under the bus," then we can expect sustained outbursts of anger and denunciation of McCain. After all, if McCain rejects them personally, then he also rejects their causes, right?

I predict that we will see relatively low-key ("I'm sick of politics") responses, because McCain is doing a back-door deal. McCain is promising to push their wacko agendas after he gets in office, but before that, Hagee and Parsley need to shut up and go away, because their public pronouncements are frighteningly crazy.

This could backfire on McCain if the reichwing faithful get angry at the public snub. McCain may throw the a bone by bringing in creepy Mike Huckabee as his VP, or some other Christianist. Definitely not Mitt Romney; in fact, this situation makes Romney as VP impossible.

Lose the "throw under the bus" line--it's so FoxNews, and it is a dumb way of criticizing McCain. Would you say Barack threw Wright under the bus? Rejecting someone's endorsement is a valid thing to do as a politician (though, in some sense, it is sort of silly; it means nothing, really).

McCain knew very well what those crazy preachers were about. He agrees with them, and so courted their endorsement.

Now he winks at the religiously insane and, for form's sake, rejects the endorsments?

What a tool!

Kathy @ 118:

How are these "Pastors" allowed to keep their tax-exempt status? As I recall a Baptist church had theirs removed just for preaching about Peace?

IMHO they should not be allowed to keep it. When the head of a church endorses a political candidate that should be the end of tax exemptions.
Also, what these big guys do to hide the money is blatant and shameless. Enormous luxury homes that "belong" to the church. Ditto for private jets. Income is hidden in all sorts of ways. This is routine. The government certainly knows about it but turn a blind eye. To pursue these guys would have them screaming persecution which would piss off the faithful. Politicians want those votes and not a one has the balls to risk it.

Having secured his party's nomination and given the lackluster support of the crazy base, McCain's move back to center shouldn't have been unexpected. The votes he is going after are the center moderates. If you're looking for the MSM to make an issue of these about face positions you might be harboring some unrealistic expectations. This looks like carefully thought out positioning to me.

Yep, a few thousand nutjobs here and there will put him over the top.

I want to see a real discussion of the "End Times" crowd on every network and in every newspaper. NY Times charts and graphs. Too many people are bamboozled into giving these charlatans money. Every week thousands blindly show up at their "churches" to pray at the alter of hate and war on anyone different from their pasty white comfortable asses. It is disturbing and breeds more of the same. These are the same people who give away their rights at any suggestion and send their sons off to die without asking any questions.

peaceful easy feeling @ 59:

Robertson, Hagee, Parsley. All loco. There are others, but it's pointless to waste time obsessing over these people.

James Dobson is pretty far to the right, too, but at least he isn't blaming hurricanes on gay people. Even Jim Wallis concedes Dobson has good intentions.

I believe in equal protection under the law in a democratic, pluralistic society. At Focus on the Family, I had this discussion with James Dobson's policy people, and they basically support equal protection under the law, too. Some would debate whether civil unions are necessary for that, or whether other legal protections are adequate. And that's a fair discussion.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2008/may/9.52.html

Unfortunately there are a few unbalanced people out in the 'sphere who are so desperate to assert their own contrived sense of moral superiority that they have lost all semblance of rationality when it comes to faith and politics, and as a result they cannot discern between what's truly right and wrong, or good intentions vs. bad. Apparently everything else starts looking like a brainwashed cult to those who are themselves already stuck in one.

Parsley is one creeeeepy, creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy dude.... yuck! I get grossed out just looking at him. MCcain was right to distance himself from him.
