McCain commits yet another foreign policy blunder

But, but, but....that's his strong suit. Right?

WaPo:

In comments to reporters on Thursday, McCain asserted that “I can tell you that it is succeeding. I can look you in the eye and tell you it’s succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels. Basra, Mosul and now Sadr City are quiet and it’s long and it’s hard and it’s tough and there will be setbacks.”

In fact, as the Obama campaign was quick to point out, the troop level in Iraq is at about 155,000 right now, well above the 130,000 that would mark a return to pre-surge levels.

And the McCain camp's response:

Advisers to Sen. John McCain said the flap over whether the senator was mistaken about the troop level in Iraq is nothing more than "nitpicking" about "verb tenses."

So the lives of 20,000 soldiers is just "nitpicking"? Nice to know you really "support those troops," Senator.

kids from trailer parks and housing projects aren't really soldiers...i mean they volunteered.

they weren't bred into it like mccain with his cradle to grave uber healthcare, his academy education

when his bombs landed on north vietnamese families, was he thinking about the card game him and his buddies played the night before?

McBush is simply a senile and mentally unstable shell-of-a-"man". He has no place in politics and should do the right thing for this country and just retire.

Apparently among Republicans, if you don't "admit the surge is working", you are un-American and hate the troops. Keep it up, jerks.

And this bozo stands a chance at winning the Presidency? After all the "senior moments" and all the unflagging support for Bush's war and all the hypocrisy regarding lobbyists and on and on, he still has the support of nearly half of U.S. voters?
Wow.

McCain is killing me...no, wait, he will kill me. Gotta get that verb tense thing down.

++++

Oh, I get it. "I can look you in the eye" is the new "Read my lips"...

I thought it was Tony Stark in the strong suit.

If nothing else, John McCain is an irony producing machine. On the very day Scott McClellan described the Bush administration "propaganda" used to sell an "unnecessary war" in Iraq, talking points McCain himself regurgitated, the Arizona Senator challenged Barack Obama to join him on a Baghdad visit. More ironic still, John McCain hasn't merely been wrong at every turn about the war in Iraq; the closer he gets to the war zone itself, the more disastrously off-base he becomes.

For the details, see:
"John McCain: Iraq's Worst Tour Guide."

Nitpicking? Give me a break. It's not the Dems' fault that Old Man McCain can't get anything right about Iraq.

Keep up the good work John! I'm hoping each fresh display of ignorance might reach just one of those 28%ers, a miracle will happen and they will suddenly realize they had been supporting an idiot.

Hey, it could happen!

A social worker friend who works with PTSD patients a local VA Hospital believes John McCain is suffering from PTSD and has no business being Commander-in-Chief. Period.
Add to that his obvious inability to have command of the facts regarding Iraq and other issues, and he's a walking recipe for even more disasters than Bush has been conjure up.

I'm looking forward to Obama wiping the floor with Grandpa McSame in the debates.

The "verb tenses" thing is a nice tactic, though. Verb tenses, especially in this case, absolutely change the meaning of what was said, but characterizing it as such makes it sound like critics are quibbling over grammar. Disingenuous, but effective.

I gotta try that math with my bank. 25,000 is, after all, just nitpicking. If my argument flies, I'll buy a round for the house.

You don't bold enough of the passage. Should be:

In comments to reporters on Thursday, McCain asserted that “I can tell you that it is succeeding. I can look you in the eye and tell you it’s succeeding. We have drawn down to pre-surge levels. Basra, Mosul and now Sadr City are quiet and it’s long and it’s hard and it’s tough and there will be setbacks.

Conservatives like McCain put so much stock in someone's veneer of character, always falling back on tropes like, "but he's a good man" whenever asked about the latest criminality or moral bankruptcy to emerge from the Republican Party.

What's notable here is not only that McCain is just another one of these mendacious chuckleheads, and not just that he appears completely out of sorts on his signature topic, but that right at the apex of his baseless and fumbling certainty he lays on the veneer right thick: "I can look you in the eye and tell you..."

I can look you in the eye, indeed.

Normally, when someone says something like that, the implication is that they are putting their credibility on the line, that they are concrete certain of what's about to come out of their mouth. It's going all-in at the poker table. "I can look you in the eye..."

These verbal ticks are their badge of courage, and it still... STILL holds zero integrity or credibility in whatever poop dribbles out of their mouths.

This from the man who tells us his solution to centuries-long ethnic battles is to sit people down and say, "cut the bullshit."

Can someone please look John McCain in the eye and tell him to cut the bullshit?

The corporate media is giving McWarmonger a free ride. He can drool a gaffe or two a day and it still wont matter. The smear campaign against Obama has only just begun and all these gaffes will be over looked in favor the hype drummed up against Obama. I'll bet when he really screws up in the debates the corporate media will declare him the winner.

The corporate media will wipe the floor with Obama in the debates with canard after canard. Look out for another stolen election no matter how good the poll numbers are for Obama or how he makes McWarmonger look bad in a debate.

I can only hope that some democratic 527s get a hold of clips of all of McCain's f @ ( k ups and play them over and over again in the months leading up to the general. I'm so sick of repugs right now that what is good for the goose is good for the chicken. McCant shouldn't be able to hide from these. They should be thrown in the face of every american in front of their tv set.

These "senior" moments are coming fast and furious now.

[Deleted. Off topic. Site Monitor]

McCain is a bag full of of blunders. Eventually, even his best handlers won't be able to explain them all away. I can't wait until the general election debates regardless of the Democratic nominee.

I wouldn't be surprised if McCain doesn't some day soon drop the F-bomb on national TV. That would be priceless.

Verb tenses? What does that even mean? Did he mean to say "I will have been able to tell you that it was succeeding when we were able to bring troop levels below the level where they might have been [at some time in the future]?" Or is he confusing the prefixes "pre-" and "post-" when referring to the surge?

Grammer matters, grampa.

You mean "Grammar"...excuse my nit-picking!

Verb tense? Try this:

Mc Cain: I want to be President

Mc Cain: I wanted to be President.

What a difference a verb tense makes.

You have to admit one thing -- McCain and his people certainly have an understanding of the intellectual and integrity levels of their base.

They're honing in on the "we'll-believe-anything" vote -- which in this country is a considerable block.

Why is mccain giving a Nazi salute,

Or is that the Black Power salute?

Dr. (Bitter Hussein) Matt @ 2:

McBush is simply a senile and mentally unstable shell-of-a-"man". He has no place in politics and should do the right thing for this country and just retire.

Don't forget that the age of retirement for the federal government is 65 years old. McBush would be too old to be hired by his own government if he didn't have connections.

The nitpicking-about-verb-tenses defense is hilarious. If it works, then McCain can claim to have already done absolutely anything, as long as he hopes or plans to do it in the future. Anyone pointing out that he is lying and has not in fact done it yet will simply be 'nitpicking' about 'verb tenses'. "Sure" he can say, "I haven't done it, but I will do it. So what's the problem?"

In other words, he meant to say "We are drawing down to pre-surge levels", which is the kind of statement a politican makes. What ever happened to that maverick I knew in 2000?

No that was the time he got his name right on the Social Security form.

Wow, so spot on! If the parties were reversed and Obama or Clinton made this mistake, just imagine the unmitigated rage that would be spewing forth from the right wing. Let's see, they would be traitorous, they would have contempt for every member of the military that has ever put on a uniform, they would would be this, they would be that.

But, you know, IOKIYAR

“Get a clue” is on glue. If running a negative campaign is letting the voters know how out of touch McSame is than that is the way it will be. McSame is wrong on EVERY issue. His latest attempt to be part of the mainstream (environmental issues) has backfired just like every other stance he has taken. 155,000 is smaller than 130,000 and you can bet there will be more than 130,000 in August, September, October, Novermber… as long as Mc Hatethetroops has anything to do with it. McOldman would do himself a favor if he would just go sit in a rocking chair until the end of the campaign because every time he opens his mouth is another blunder.

It's actually McCain 2008's newly released campaign motto. He stands in front of any republican crowd, delivers a hollow and vacuous diatribe of quasi race-baiting and lower-class hate... and then emerges forth to the front of the stage... extends his arm, upon which he extends his thumb upwards... and delivers this tome:

"The Republican Party... We don't have THIS up our tight ASSES anymore"

At which point the crowd chants 'NOT.. UP.. OUR.. ASSES!!!' to the tune of 'Four More Years!' and McCain exits stage left to fly to the next Not Up Our Asses speech.

'See folks, this is my thumb, NO its not prosthetic ! and NO it hasnt been there!'

'This is THE THUMB, that launches the missiles, that brings on the RAPTURE'

Actually we're just nit-picking on mccain's use of the term nit-picking

He was actually thinking about lunch.

I'm sure mccain prefers block-heads to blocked-bowels

And has experience with both.

It depends on what the meaning of "have been drawn down to" has been drawn down to.

I share your concern. Kerry destroyed Wanton Boy in the 2004 debates, yet the shit=faced shirker somehow was deemed the winner, or having at least "held his own." Hell, a rotten pomegranate could out-debate Commander Bunnypants. But you're right: the whore media will continue to supplicate before McSame.

reslug reality: it's not lying it's improper grammar!

Oh. That certainly explains a lot...

neocons have a superiority complex....rarely can admit to being wrong or mistaken. if obama makes that same gaffe he doesn't have the experience he needs to be prez. for some of us this is getting old.

God help us this man is D U M B. So you Obama/Hillary supporters who wont' vote for the other and are going to vote for McCain instead . . . guess you sure showed us.

I can't wait for the debates. No lying McIdiot handlers to tell him the correct answers. It wont be multiple choice either. I think if they asked the same question three different times in the debate you will get three different answers and when he is called on it his head will explode.

I can look you in the eye and tell you that conjugating verbs is fun!
Conjugating verbs has worked, works, and will work!
And those are the facts the way I see/saw/will see them.

Should we just start calling McCain the former presidential candidate NOW because in November he will have lost?

Getting back to the original story, I've posted a similar critique but pointed out the frame and Republican positioning they often take when they are caught in a lie.

Plus, I've included a link to a site that lists in detail, almost every gaffe you can think of. A great future reference when McCain stumbles again.

http://democurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2008/05/mccains-corrections-as-bad-as...

It depends on what your definition of the word "have" is.

I've lost track. How many is "yet another"? Maybe they could be numbered.

Verb tenses? is that the same as a spastic colon? yabad@34 thats no salute, thats how far he has his thumb up georges backside. Mccain Is a big Supporter, thats for sure.--CEO

McCain can't be expected to remember all the facts when he needs to spend most of his day concentrating on not making a poopy in his diaper.

What the hell is on the end of his thumb?

LOL, McCains middle name is "blunder". I honestly cannot believe that ANYONE is taking McCain seriously. Can you even imagine another 4 years of Bush? McCain is the "mini me" to Bush.

Its a McCrime,

That a person running for president can look you in the eye and lie to you.

It is worse when you believe that lie......................................

What was it Bush said (or tried to say once), Fool me twice shame on "err" ? Point is you can't get fooled again.
something like that.........................................

Question? has any one really checked McCain mental health. And I am very serious, because if he would win like the CORAPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA would like, he will have his finger on that RED button, lets not forget that.

Those 20.000 lives cannot be nitpicking because a real nitpicker would have pointed out that 155.000 minus 130.000 is still 25.000

I guess if a difference of 20.000 troops matters, a difference of 5.000 matters as well
