'Dr. No' is almost as old as Barack Obama
By Steve Benen Thursday Jun 26, 2008 7:30amJohn McCain clearly wants to make unflattering Barack Obama comparisons, but he seems to be having a little trouble with cultural references.
A couple of weeks ago, McCain said Obama reminds him of William Jennings Bryan. Given that Bryan last ran for president literally 100 years ago, this was something of a dud. Shortly thereafter, McCain went with a Jimmy Carter reference, which is likely to fall flat with about half the voters.
Now, the McCain campaign is going with an ad, riffing off the first James Bond film, “Dr. No,” which was released just one year after Barack Obama was born.
First, of course, is the generational problem. James Bond movies remain popular, but if the campaign is sensitive about McCain’s status as a septuagenarian, picking a 46-year-old movie as a cultural reference might not be the best idea. (As Oliver Willis recently noted, “McCain went from a 19th century comparison to a 20th century comparison. At some point in his campaign I suppose he might join Sen. Obama and the rest of us in the 21st century.”)
Second, and more importantly, is the substance. Obama has said no to various McCain campaign ideas, but only because they’re bad ideas.
Besides, if anyone's been saying no to an effective energy policy, it's McCain, not Obama.

Never mind the fact that Dr. No in the movies was a racist depiction of a stereotypical Asian villain played by a caucasian actor. So they are in effect using a racist stereotype against the first African American nominee of a major party. Its hard to believe a political campaign can be so clueless.
Dr No was apparently Chinese in the movie.
Half German Half Chinese in the book.
He was Ian Fleming's Fu Manchu to James Bond's Neyland Smith.
In the book he was a former Tong accountant who absconded with the cash to threaten the world.
McCain needs to fire his campaign staff and start all the hell over. Not being a James Bond fan, I have no idea who Dr. No is and I'm betting I'm not all alone. Ed Rollins was on Morning Joe today and he blistered McCain's campaign.
This campaign is being handled so badly. First of all they have a bad nominee to work with so they need some real professionals to sell this somewhat outdated product. It's somewhere between pathetic and funny as hell.
That video is hilarious. It makes Obama look good. Like how can they say Nuclear is clean and safe? Even proponents of nuclear understand their are risks to nuclear.
The video makes Obama look kind of cool, I think.
The book had Dr. No with two hooked hands, his own being destroyed by Tong torturers, and a dramatic death in his own uranium rod cooling pools.
In the book, his cover was dealing in bat guano. So James Bond killed him by commandeering a earth-mover and drowning him in a load of bat guano, literally drowning him in bat litter.
The whole book seemed rather tongue in cheek.
But it unfortunately influenced the entire movie series so a morbidly depressed and burned out English agent dealing with often more realistic threats, was suddenly fighting super bad guys, with his gimmicky Aston Martin (a 1933 Bentley in the book with no gadgets), and and explosive end.
This is supposed to be a negative ad? So Obama says "No" to McCain's poorly thought out policy proposals and gets a great graphic treatment and soundtrack behind him while he does it. Yeah, that's going to hurt. I guess McCain is "Dr. Yes", trying to please everybody on every subject no matter the contradictions.
Is that a green screen behind Obama? (Paging Mr. Colbert)
Wow...that was one of the weakest, lamest political ads I've ever seen.
All it did was show images of Barack Obama saying reasonable things, set against background imagery and music that people associate with a friggin' action hero! James Bond is cool and suave, tough, and gets all the ladies. That's who they want people to associate Obama with?
Man, I hope the McCain camp keeps this ad person around for a long time.
Hey, give McSame a break here ... He and Williams Jenning Bryan were drunk the last time they met back in 1918, so his memory is foggy.
OT, but in the interest of Americans and Education.
Here is a great piece from a German Newspaper Die Zeit
The article is Titled: "Are Americans becoming dumb and dumber? Or is it just the Christians, and not the Jews and Hindus?"
Pretty interesting read if you have a few moments.
Jesus, did McCain really say that Obama *reminds* him of William Jennings Bryan? McCain must be even older than he admits.
Catster @ 11:
Yeah, they were drinking buddies (see #9)
Ole' Grandpappy McInsane show his age once again!! Besides, the allusion to Dr. NO is a good thing as it telegraphs the message that Obama says "NO" to Bush's failed policies. I think this new Dr. No campaign will bring the fold into Obama's camp faster than any ad Obama can run. The people have had enough of Washington insider politics and need to either demand that these morons represent us or discontinue paying their salaries as OUR public servants.
I think Dr. No sends a very clear message of change which Obama epitomizes. Hopefully, when the FISA bill rears it's ugly head again, he will show us how he, Barack Obama, represents the people by voting "NO". Let's go, Dr. NO! Show the american people how you patently reject the corrupt Washingtonian mindset.
ysbaddaden @ 5:
Thunderball (the book) always amused me greatly, super villain scientist creating a V1 type rocket to drop a nuke on London, desperately tries to steal or acquire a guidance system...
It would have been cheaper for the super villain to buy some diesel for his Lorry and drive the one hundred miles to London...
Fun period books with echoes of Fleming's WW2 espionage experiences and borrowed bits, but silly plots.
Clearly, McCrazy's camp is out of fresh ideas for packaging and marketing this old fool. Now they've really shot themselves in the foot. Of course, Obama is "Dr. NO" - since he rejects Bush's failed policies across the board. Now if he can get on board and protect our civil rights by voting NO to FISA, he'll have it made in the shade; otherwise, he will lose the Independents and Libertarians in November. It's already happening simply due to his comments made public about FISA. Obama had better wake up and recognize that it's precisely the I's and swing voters he needs to carry him into the White House.
This McC*nt spoof video now means the gloves can come off and we can have some real MSM TV fun.
McNasty is a subtle running joke on the more thinking MSM shows, open season on McSenile adverts.
Obama rose to popularity, due in large part to his "Netroots Support". Now this same Netroots group is very unhappy about his stance of FISA. If he truly desires to represent what is now the majority of americans and continue the Obama Wave, he needs to stop pandering to the fear mongers in Washington who are putting him into a national security corner and begin speaking again from his heart. He KNOWS in his gut that he should not support immunity so why doesn't he again consult his gut and put his money where his heart is by saying "NO" to anything that exonerates this president and his cabal of criminals (the telecons)??
i believe that even mccain said offshore drilling would not lower gas prices and is not a short term solution but it is necessary to get our dependence off foreign fuel (and interestingly enough, if areas off our coast were open to drilling, most of it would be contracted to foreign oil companies like shell). but i love when the ad says barack is against innovation and the electric car......says no to innovation!!!?? ahhhhahahahahahaha....ok mccain. i think that even his brain might have wrinkles
ferrofluid (Obama 08) @ 16:
Time for the Dems to begin cranking out interviews with families and people involved with McCrazy's problems aboard the USS Forestal!!
sean @ 18:
Trouble with McSenile is not brains wrinkles more the lack of wrinkles, he dares not go near squirrels for fear of nut knocking and reject time for hollow head.
sean @ 18:
This is a critical component to the offshore drilling scenario: The Bush Cabal now owns at least one-third interest in our own untapped oil reserves. Who stands to benefit obscenely from oil drilling in this country? You guessed it - the same family of criminals who have destroyed this country.
It's time for the people to hold this family totally accountable for their crimes against the citizens.
I understand McCain was pleased with the Supreme Court ruling yesterday regarding the right to bear arms. He said that he had long held the opinion that every American had the right to own a musket.
Obama says No to offshore drilling. Is that supposed to be a hit on Obama?
I wonder if they're playing this ad in Florida.
Hey let's run the Great Ziegfeld or My Man Godfrey, two cinematic classics released the year McShame was born in Panama.

To me it appears that McCain's campaign is working for Senator Obama instead of against him.
Actually, I'm a bit older the Obama. But thanks for the thought.
McSame's campaign is so lame I thinks they are doing it on porpoise.
The Architects are losing it...

At least Mike Gravel had the sense to appear with Obamagirl showing he was somewhat up to date with what's going on. Furthermore, he was willing to poke a bit of fun at himself. Yes, his campaign was long since dead in the water but still my point is still valid, I'd like to think.
They were shooting for Connery level of cool, but this attempt barely reaches Lazenby. This would be easily reworked with "They Might Be Giants" song "No" into a pro-Barry ad.

The republiscums are, of course, playing with the persceptions of their target audience, an audience that tends to make judgements on perceptions rather than the truth. My favorite example of this occured when my mother, a life long, die hard republiscum supporter picke up a book I had been reading and inquired sarcastically as to who "Miz Dooze" was and what the ABC's were. The book, "The ABC's of MS DOS" certainly wasn't of a sexual nature, but my mother's impression of me as a single male college student made her believe there was somethine untoward about that book because of its title.
The republiscums must certainly think that truth is dangerous when you hear all the lies they tell us instead.
McCain doesn't go to the theater often enough. Originally he wanted to reference, "Our American Cousin."
The only thing that the Repubs have is sleeze. Now for FISA, I don't agree with the immunity part of this bill, however, it dosen't strip out the criminal aspect of what they did. These are just civil suits in court right now. I wish people, would remember, Obama said "there iwll be times you don't agree with me and that's OK. He could have handled this thing better. But it is the New media that is hyping this and the the blogs. He can't be everything to everbody or else he will be nobody. I love this man and have all the confidence he will do the right thing when he is in office.

McGrampa hasn’t voted in the Senate since April 8.
In April, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) became the most absent member of the Senate. According to the Washington Post’s votes database, McCain has “missed 367 votes (61.4%) during the current Congress.” In fact, CQ reports today that McCain hasn’t voted in the Senate since April 8. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) last voted on June 4.
@47
Of course not. He said no to McCain's stupid suggestion that the way to get to the electric car was to offer a cash prize to the first person who could present a fully functional advanced battery, like it was the giant pumpkin that wins the blue ribbon at the county fair.
Obama supports the much more reasonable and productive way to go of offering tax credits and incentives to help develop the component technologies one step at a time, so that a cascade of innovation spins out many alternate-energy advances.

It ought to be a sure win for the Democratic Party this year, but McCain's campaign ineptitude is creeping me out as badly as Dubya's did in 2003. Bush claimed the victory in that election, if I remember correctly.
Also: the Clinton camp (and their supporters) need to lay off of Obama and *support him, practically and unconditionally. That's what the word 'Unity' *means, unless you're Joe Lieberman, of course..

Dick Cheney is Ernst Stavro Blofeld
Joe Liebermann is Irma Bunt
George W. Bush is Max Zorin (about the most worthless Bond villian, but without the coolness of being Christopher Walken, but he does have his own African American sidekick)
Since John Edwards wanted to be a spy... we'll make him James Bond (per George Lazenby, not nearly as cool as Daniel Craig or Sean Connery, but way better than the rest).

That is a horrible and ridiculous ad but when Obama says that he is not a proponent of nuclear power he is not exactly telling the truth. When Exelon Corp. who operates nuclear power plants in Illinois got in a bit of trouble for not reporting leaks at these plants Obama was working both sides. After receiving more than $230,000 in contributions while in the Ill. Senate he kept watering down a bill that would make it mandatory to report these leaks until it became voluntary. His campaign manager David Axelrod has also worked for Exelon Corp as a consultant. I intend to vote for Obama but let's not make him into something he is not.

I liked this ad. It condensed Obama's arguments into a small space, and highlighted the fact that:
1. McCain is throwing up a bunch of ideas to see which one will stick; and
2. They are all just gimmicks.
When the text on the screen says something about clean safe nuclear energy, anybody who sees that is going to think of Montgomery Burns. The phrase is associated with corporate doublespeak, and it signals that the rest of McCain's ideas are equally bull shit.
