Harry Reid says "NO" to the new FISA bill

This is Harry Reid's statement in FISA:

"The Senate will soon vote on a FISA bill that represents the final result of negotiations among the White House and Democrats and Republicans in Congress. I opposed the version originally passed by the Senate. And although improvements have been made in the version now before us, this legislation continues to contain provisions that will lead to immunity for the telecommunications companies who cooperated with the Bush Administration's illegal warrantless wiretapping program.

"For that reason, I will vote no.

The vote is coming today. Please continue to donate to Blue America's FISA page. We're still very active and spending your dollars wisely. And here's our full page ad in the Washington Post.

Good for him! Now, how do we knock some sense into the rest of the senate?

If, god forbid, the damned thing passes, can we hold a wake for the passing of our right to privacy?

That's bullcrap. If he votes yes on cloture and no on the bill. . . he voted yes for the bill.

Good. its good to see some semblance of leadership from ol Harry. now if only he showed that in other areas.

"result of negotiations among the White House and Democrats and Republicans in Congress"

He seems to have forgotten that the telecoms themselves played a very big role in writing this piece of crap legislation.

Well, that's real leadership there, Harry. Why you bringing it to the floor for a vote in the first place? You, more than anyone, will be responsible for this cover-up being passed. You and Ms. Pelosi. What a joke.

If he votes no on amendments to the bill stripping out immunity. . . and no on the bill.. . he voted yes on Telecom Immunity.

Voting when you already no the outcome means nothing. Voting wrong on something that could change the outcome is the vote that matters.

Reid made this statement with his tail between his legs. He said in this statement that Bush was part of an ILLEGAL wiretapping program. This bill shouldn't even have been written up let alone voted on and soon to be passed. Pelosi should have started impeachment hearings a long time ago, and Reid should be voting on Bushes removal.

It means nothing. If he was truly against the bill, he would have been vocal for days or weeks, when his opposition could have changed hearts and minds. Instead he waits until the day the bill is going to be voted on. A cynical, self-serving attempt to fool and placate telco immunity opponents.

How can one republican block hundreds of bills but Harry Reid can't block this one? Is it not polite and dignified Senate behavior? Where did that get us with these criminal psychopath Republicans?

Well, doh! If the Senate majority says leader says in his statement that Bush's wiretapping program was/is ILLEGAL - why is he not pushing for IMPEACHMENT form his colleagues in the House??

Which part of ILLEGAL does he and the rest of his colleagues in Congress not understand??

Plisko's right. No on the bill and yes on cloture is nonsense.

what a scheming, duplicitous @sshole. and the contempt he has for the public is fully on display with that vote.

By voting "Yes" on the FISA bill, Harry Reid proves once and for all he is one of the most dishonest, smelly snakes in the whole room full of reptiles otherwise known as the Capitol.

This guy is the Senate Majority Leader, for crissakes people. Dodd put a hold on the bill in the winter. He dismissed it - which is NEVER done, particularly to someone in your own party.
And if Harry Reid was soooooo adamantly opposed to this "New & Improved" bill he could have stymied it in committee foreverrrrrrrrrr!!!!

This is a show for the netroots, the Kossacks, so he and the rest of the spineless jellyfish that comprise the Democratic leadership can show up at the convention and
Demagogue the issue. It's a game, that's all it is folks.

This gutbucket coward sold you and the Consititution down the river for a spin on Jell-o Jay's Yacht next week.

It's as a simple as that.

Harry Reid is scum!

Let's not forget----these clowns were voted into office! Makes me wonder who are the real clowns...

it would be nice if harry reid proved he was not full of crap, but I won't hold onto any hope he won't fold.... or Pelosi.... or Obama. as usual, he'll say one thing, then support the process that goes against everything he supposedly stand for/against.

After reading the statement made by Reid, I'm not as angry about the bill as I was. If I had to make a choice on whether AT&T (and others) spend some money or Bush administration officials get boned for breaking the law, I know what I'd choose.

Sadly, if those companies were forced to pay out in civil suits for breaking the law, the settlement would just get reduced in years to come like with Enron and/or there would be an increase in fees to customers to prevent a loss in profits.

Yesterday the Rethuglicans buried "Senator No" in North Carolina. If a rightwing racist hatemonger like Jesse Helms could block legislation, why can't one decent....

nevahmind.....

My contempt and disillusionment with the "leadership" on both sides of the capitol that allows this bill to make its way to the president's desk is beyond description. Oh, but then I'm just an "advocate" and don't understand all the important insider "leadership" the "leaders" have going on with history's "actors."

Barbarians, all of 'em.

This is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue. This is an American citizenry and the Constitution vs. Special interest paid-for politicians issue. They won this round:companies can commit crimes at the behest of the junta and the American people can be spied upon. If we forget and get distracted when these officeholders come up for re-election, they'll win the next round.

Sen. Reid could just simply hold or pull the bill.

Spineless, enabling group. After today, I'm leaving the Democratic Party. If they can't stand up for the 4th Amendment, I cannot be in that party.

Gosh, what a principled man he is. Let's just overlook the fact that the spineless wimp aided and abetted (exactly the right words, since they're active participants in a conspiracy to cover up criminal activity) this abomination every step of the way. For the good of the country, this milquetoast SOB needs to ejected. Him *and* Pelosi. You vote against the rule of law, you're gone. No pension, no benefits. Thrown out and forced to take remedial civics classes.

Surveillance Deal: Same Bad Law, New Bad Arguments
By Madison Powers, Guest Columnist, CQ Staff

The bill revising the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) goes to the Senate floor for a vote today after being caught in the crunch of stalled legislation prior to the July 4th recess. It grants civil immunity to telecom companies who have, or may again, violate the Constitution with regard to warrantless electronic eavesdropping, and it carves out huge exceptions to the usual safeguards that protect citizens from promiscuous government fishing expeditions.

I can't believe anyone here is taken in by Reid deceitful crap. He maneuvers these things into position to pass them, and then votes against them if it's got enough support to pass without him.

He's for this FISA bill, no matter what he says.

Reid thinks that we're stupid and don't know that the vote on cloture was the only vote that really counted.

Give Senator Limp Dick credit....at least he used the word "No". It's a start.

As annoyed as I've been over Obama over his prevarications on FISA, this really isn't a mess of his making. Reid, Pelosi and Hoyer, however, have much to answer for. Reid's "no" vote is too little, too late.

It's so evident and clear that Ried is trying to have the cake and icing both. He has
taken, I'm sure, a head-count as to the "Aye" votes and thinks that we, who are
informed, are going to think he did the right thing by voting "Nay"??? He needs to
immediately be removed from his high position by Obama as one of his first moves
after becoming Prez. Harry Reid is a prick.

Game over.

Our politicians are not corrupted by Business. They are themselves agents of Business. Our government is now run by these agents, who represent Business, not us. America must wake up to this in order to address the problem. Ignore what Reid and Pelosi, Hoyer, Cheney, Bush SAY. Watch what they do (or don't) DO.

If this had been any other type of job Harry Reid (and Pelosi and Conyers and Leahy and Waxman) would have been fired yesterday. Useless.

Yep. The Real FISA bill was cloture.

We don't need a miracle, we need people to take to the streets and protest, and stop paying taxes and voting out these bastards...

To put it simply, Harry Reid and his brethren in the Democratic Leadershipare willing co-conspirators to the criminal actions of this Administration.
By allowing this vote to happen and (eventually) voting to approve this bill, Dems (i.e. Harry Reid) have digressed from chronic capitulators to out-and-out criminals. Felons.

It's that simple, people!

The Administration has (admitted) on several occassions to committing felonies (INCLUDING ILLEGAL WIRETAPPING) and what THIS Congress has down is write all the Bushinistas a get out of jail card.

The telecoms, Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, Gonzo, et al., will never be punished.

This is what 2-years of THIS DEMOCRATIC leadership has brought us.

Reid & Pelosi & Co. are not only bad Democrats, they are traitors - not to the party but to the country.

No quarter here for these evil bastards, D or no-D, next to their names.

Every single Republican in the Houes except for one voted for this travesty, while a substantial majority of House Democrats voted against it. Republican civil libertarians, such as they are, only care about the rule of law when it's a Democrat's head on the chopping block.

We need a Progressive Party.

Probably many of them would say if it makes us "safer", they don't care. That's what's so frustrating, there are so many people in our country who are not paying attention and if they are, they are not thinking for themselves. They trust the govt. to do what is right. That may have been sort of right in the past, however, it isn't today with this administration. You would think with all that we know now, everyone would question each and everything this administration does.

The ones who even know about this feel it's necessary to protect us. But they really don't appreciate the consequenses for civil liberties down the road. Nor do they understand that it's a waste of time as far as preventing any types of attack against us. They do not understand how it is used against dissident individuals who would attempt to effect change in non violent ways. They refuse to accept that they are wrong.

If the Senator voted YES on cloture then he voted NO for the FISA bill, he voted YES on the FISA bill no matter what he says. I am not fooled by this shell game he is playing by saying he is against something but still helping it get through."

Plisko nailed it. Not only is Reid for the bill, but when he snuffed out Dodd's hold on the bill and voted yes on the cloture bill, he showed what he is: a liar and a coward who is in the pocket of the phone companies.

It's a sad day when a dead Jesse Helms did more to delay this bill than a live Harry Reid or Barack Obama.

That's step 1, Harry. Now, how about showing some leadership and let the Democrats know that you expect them to also vote "No"?

Just my 2 cents, but wouldn't gathering millions of emails and phone call make finding terrorists like finding a needle in a haystack? How could this be effective? How long would it take you to count to a million let alone read a million emails? What is this really about?

This. I've mentioned this to several people I work with and they've responded: "If it makes me/my kids safer, I have no problem with the government listening to my phone calls." There is zero outrage over the invasion of privacy, the potential for abuse, or the blatant lawbreaking by a U.S. President.

I called my Senators and told them if immunity was passed I was voting for Nader. Nader said there is not much difference between the two parties. I watched him on C-Span and love that he wants to put the power back to the people and away from corporate America. This immunity bill should not have been brought to the floor for a vote.

Maybe the telecoms made up fake names and email addresses and wrote Congress to pass immunity. Is it possible? Faux news said 70% of the people wanted immunity for the telecoms.

My father told me, a long time ago, that when the majority race of this country(Caucasians) dips below 75 % that the powerbrokers would adopt an overtly draconian, fascist stance to retain power and authority in the US. That was 25 years ago. They will even sacrifice major portions of the populace to maintain power. Their fear is not working. Next move is the power grab with no regard for law.

Many Americans know the race baiting is bullsht. The Class system is bullsht. Military might, in and of itself, is bullsht.

You'd be surprised how many people still hold to that old canard that if you don't have anything to hide, you don't have anything to worry about.

You'll notice they always say you not I.

Yet somehow they get so upset when the Clinton's got the names of 300 republicans in Congress, when they only ordered 30 to consider for possible positions.

And if their own medical or voting records came out that could lead to discrimination.

Or how when they were younger they "accidentally" ran over their boyfriend with their car.

You guys need to start holding your leaders accountable. Forget Bush and McCain. First, make sure that your own political base is in order. Punish them first if they cave to something like this. You want change? Then make sure the candidate is actually different. If Obama supports amnesty for the illegal wiretapping, then tell him he lost your vote. Don't vote for the guy. Old Fossil McCain is better than a centrist Obama that has no stands, but a good image. If Obama wins, via his image as someone who brings hope, he might actually get a free pass on a lot of things McCain could not get away with.

Obama must understand that his base will not be voting for him when he flip flops on key issues. All he brings is false hope.

Mmm, mmm, what a price, what a price to pay
All right. Good night, sleep tight

The Constitution's time has expired.

Harry Reid is opposed to the bill, personally. However, his corporate masters are for it, so as long as he ensures the bill's passage, he can vote however he wants...

What a country we live in...

Just my 2 cents, but wouldn't gathering millions of emails and phone call make finding terrorists like finding a needle in a haystack? How could this be effective? How long would it take you to count to a million let alone read a million emails? What is this really about?

I don't know what it's really about, but it must be pretty bad to have the administration so determined to keep it hidden.

Jonathon Turley said on Olbermann/Maddow lat night that it was about a cover-up of felonies committed by Bush. Bush committed felonies when he started this domestic spying. The government will not look into it. If a citizen can file a civil suit than these felonies will come out. If the tlecoms are given immunity from civil suits than it will be covered up because private citizens will not be able to sue to get the information out. I hope I made sense here.

Nelson from Florida is, once again and usual, trying to cover his ass. What a prick

I'm sick of the niceities and courtesy, I want to see some Senators start pointing fingers and telling these other capitulators "Shame!" and doing it with a righteous anger. Fuck Parlimentary proceedure, these scum need their face spat in.

That is like saying the executioner is personally oppossed to the death penalty.

Anyone who give Reid any credit WRT the fight against the destruction of the Bill of Rights is a pinhead. Period.

pissed off patricia @ 45:

Put this bill together with the Patriot Act and it makes you really frightened.

In all my life, I never envisioned being frightened of my own government.

And don't forget that we torture, too. Welcome to Bush's America.

Prison vendor shareholders of this country need more "criminals" to increase revenue from lucrative government contracts. What better than to cause endless litigation on every citizen. Say something against the status quo and your conversations suddenly aren't minimized.

Poor people are no longer the scare tactic used against the "middle class". It's a supermax prison with 23-hour lockdown.

Some consider that 9-11.

Here's what I worry about: this administration is so criminal that they cannot cover up all their crimes and they know it. So they'll fake a terrorist threat around election time and use it as an excuse to cancel the elections, declare martial law, and install Bush for life.

I can't even understand why republicans are voting for this bill. Aren't their constituents raising hell about it too? If their constituents aren't raising hell about it, why aren't they?

Most of "them"(at least the ones I know) are too busy watching Faux Noise or "reality"
shows and have no knowledge as to what is about to happen to us all.

"They" have a very different view of what it means to "protect America."

The generic Republican mindset is "it's us against the world." Even in the best of times "the world" is something "out there" .. it IS "the other."

So, for the generic Republican (and also the "war Democrats" or "liberal hawks") the idea of "protecting America" means protecting borders, protecting economic interests (often leading to invasions of other countries), etc - all for the "good of America."

My view, and the view I think most progressives (is that the right label?) share is that American VALUES (not "Family Values" .. ugh) are what should be protected. The rule of law. Respect for the rights of ALL individuals, etc. The Bill of Rights. The Constitution. And we "protect" these values by living them, not (for instance) by trying to force them on others (which pretty much negates the very values we're ostensibly trying to share).

I think this IS the fundamental difference in mindset.

So what? It's still getting passed. Harry, the Mormon cultist, is just playing his bit part in a vast criminal organization.

There are many reasons to believe your scenerio is impossible. We can start with 300,000,000 right off the top.

The military would not stand for it. If Blackwater can hold of the 101st Airbourne Division i would be surprised.

They can not justify suspending or cancelling elections. Nor do they need to. They will simply change the face (not the substance) of government.

Amitola @ 10:

Well, doh! If the Senate majority says leader says in his statement that Bush's wiretapping program was/is ILLEGAL - why is he not pushing for IMPEACHMENT form his colleagues in the House??

Which part of ILLEGAL does he and the rest of his colleagues in Congress not understand??

Maybe it's because everyone in the Congress is on the take? This bill is hiding their participation in this criminal activity along with the telecoms and the Administration. Why the hell do you think there is such overwhelming support for a bill that crushes the 4th Amendment? Why would Obama vote for such tripe? These people are not there for YOU. The sooner everyone understands that the sooner we can get to the meat of the real issue: Most of your Reps and Senators don't care about you or your family. They care about taking care of big business. End of story.

I didn't see this, but I respect Turley's opinion on this specific matter.

The electorate should not forget that Nancy Pelosi has made this possible. Did Turley have anything to say about her? Since she knew about this and many other things, could she too be guilty of felonies? This is the ONLY thing that explains her malignant behavior.

We have a den of goddamned criminals in Congress; if ever there was a "fox guarding the hen-house", this is it.

Harry just gave us the death of democracy. Pick a country to run to people. Save your children. Those who voted for this FISA bill are guilty of treason.

My fellow thoughtcrime colleagues.

There is very little in any of this that should come as a surprise.

Here Amy Goodman interviews Mark Klein the ATT technician turned whistleblower.

Our corrupt congress never saw fit to interview him, to call any hearings or to do any investigation.

Why not? Because the fix has been in from the beginning. The 'Leadership' has only sought the best timing for this soon to be terrible result.

Terrible from the standpoint of the Constitution.

Terrible from the standpoint of the ordinary citizens.

Here is Jonathan Turley who never pulls his punches.

Take this statement from Harry Reid for what it is: an admission of the collusion of the Congress and the Executive branches of the United States Government in the commission of multiple felonies. An admission by the Senate Majority Leader before the ultimate commission in this series of crimes.

IT MEANS SOMETHING. IT MEANS A LOT, ACTUALLY.

It doesn't improve the results for us or the Constitution, but that was never in the cards.

I have been saying this from day one, it has never been illustrated more clearly than today. We have Government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations… and their buddies.

They aren't rights if someone (or something) can just take them away from you whenever they want.

We have no rights anyway. We're just idiot slave consumers. So shut the hell up and get back to work you moron slaves.
