McCrocodile was in Michigan explaining that we really weren't in a 'mental recession'.
I am sure most if not all of the unemployed Michigan folks who showed up for Gramp's words of wisdom felt much better.
I couldn't make it, I was busy looking for employment.
Another american icon bites the dust as Inbev looks to buy out Anheuser Busch. Probably doesn't make much difference to many here but St. Louis won't be the same. Please to accept globalization with your morning beer........
McCain slams Obama for missing a vote he also missed.
More of the most depressing article in this post:
ummmm, yeah. about that.....
the link to the at-Largely post about Rove's minions in AL took an interesting twist ... AL AG Troy King to resign?

Yeh, uh, me too. I was lucky enough to find something outsourced from Utah on the intertubes. then again, I wouldn't have made it anywhoot. wouldn't fly all the way out there, airport security hand-up-ass and everything, to see grandpa... there are way too many of those in close proximity to me here in Florida. nursing homes full of 'em.
how, pray tell, did phil gram avoid being replaced by mccain when the news came out of his involvement with the mortgage crisis (U&S, UBS, there is 'You' and there is "us", deal)?
his comment yesterday was politically idiotic, insulting and wrong... but the REAL damage was gram's actual actions, not his dunderheaded statements.
from keating five, to his support of the bush economic shaft, mccain has demonstrated that he is NOT to be trusted with the nation's economy. yet, the msm still treats this as a non-issue. the only thing they want to discuss is the gaffe, not reality.
mccain supposedly 'threw gram under the bus', but did he? no, he didn't. even if he replaces gram, the same ideology rules the mccain camp: the economy is for the rich, the rest just have to make the best of the scraps and crumbs.
Breaking News: The Dow is falling below 11,000 for the first time in two years.

Depressing, yeah, but The Big Picture is an excellent web site- one of my favorites. The financials absolutely suck right now.
Scary times.

But, don't worry, it's just mental.
10 Reasons Why Your Economic Pain Isn’t ‘Mental’
HOUSING FORECLOSURES INCREASING: As a result of the subprime lending crisis, “housing foreclosures nationwide were up 50% in June compared with the same month in 2007.” In California alone, foreclosures have reached an average of 500 per day.
HOMELESSNESS INCREASING: The number of homeless over the age of 50 are “steadily increasing.”
HEALTHCARE COSTS RISING: According to a report by the Government Accountability Office, “health-care costs are growing much faster than the economy.” Costs are rising so significantly, some Americans are delaying retirement.
GAS PRICES RISING: The national average gas price is $4.09, up 33% from this time last year. Gas prices are now expected to hit “$4.25 by the fall and then stay at more than $4 a gallon until the end of 2009.”
JOB LOSSES INCREASING: In the first six months of this year, a total of 438,000 jobs have been lost, bringing unemployment to 5.5%. The CEO of Bank of America commented, if unemployment continues to rise, “all bets are off.”
FOOD COSTS RISING: “U.S. food prices rose 4 percent in 2007″ making it the fastest rise in 17 years and, as a result, food stamps have considerably less buying power.
HEATING AND ELECTRICITY COSTS RISING: Heating oil costs across the north are expected to be “up 60 percent from last year” and utilities across the country are “raising power prices up to 29%.”
REAL WAGES DECLINING: “Slower wage growth and faster inflation has led to falling real hourly and weekly earnings for most workers.”
LEISURE SPENDING DECLINING: As a result of the rising cost of living, Americans are “tightening their belts and thinking twice about spending extra bucks on entertainment and leisure products.”
VALUE OF DOLLAR DECLINING: The dollar “has been declining steadily for six years against other major currencies, undercutting its role as the leading international banking currency.”
And growing......

I'm already spending less on booze and porn.
It's getting to the point that I get turned on reading Blondie.
Caught this story on Yahoo:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20080711/hl_hsn/teenbirthrateshomicidesoninc...
Followed up by going to the actual data:
http://www.childstats.gov/americaschildren/fam_fig.asp#famfigure1a
Note the rate of change of things like teen births and births to unwed mothers. Derivative of rate over time* always increasing in Republican administrations and decreasing in democratic administrations - but the "pro-lifers" vote republican. Go figure.
*Democrats = decreasing rate or slowing in growth of rate, Republicans = increasing rate or slowing in decrease of rate.
Note, the Yahoo story doesn't correlate this phenomenon. Its probably not only the stupid abstinence-only education; it's probably more indicative of the decreasing median economic status during Republican administrations.
Just another piece of data, but who needs facts when you've got fox?

Is that a 100-year crazy, like a 100-year flood?
Dr. Hussein Matt @ 17:
Its all in your head.
ysbaddaden @ 18:
Booze and porn are inelastic demands, like cigarettes. Who doesn't get turned on reading Blondie?
Dr. Hussein Matt @ 9:
I've been watching this all morning. Its a slaughter out there. You got all commodities moving up at rapid paces with the stock indexes tanking. Even the futures aren't looking good for next week. The dollar is resuming its slide against all currencies and I doubt Freddie an Fannie will hold out much longer. Even Sallie Mae under SLM Corp. is being hammered. This is very grim indeed.
ysbaddaden @ 18:
Cutting back on booze and porn is hardly a great example to prove your economic pain is more than just mental, ysby. That's the one example that somewhat justifies Gramm's point that we are a nation of whiners.
Old Billy Hussein @ 24:
I would expect booze and tobacco consumption to go up. What other commodities thrive in a depression? Used 55 gallon drums..

I don't agree with Gramm, CiP. But I agree with him on that point. If your worst problem is cutting back on booze and porn, then yeah, that's whining. Neither one will kill you.
BREAKING NEWS: The DOW falls below 11,000 for the first time in 2 years and oil hits another all-time high

EPA says the value of an American life has decreased
In May, the Environmental Protection Agency lowered its “value of a statistical life” measure to $6.9 million in today’s dollars, which is “a drop of nearly $1 million from just five years ago.” In other words, in the eyes of the EPA, the value of a human life has decreased.
Dr. Hussein Matt @ 41:
Oh quit whining, Matt. ;>)
Dr. Acula @ 42:
Oops....sorry. I'm going to grab a Pabst and pick-up the latest Jugs magazine
Rove and his pals, always up to something...
Dr. Acula @ 42:
Uhh, to this freak, if you're not whining, you're not a true leftist. When the DOW was at 14,000 the stock market was all a sham. Now with it tanking he's never been more gleeful. Those are true leftist bonafides.
Dr. Hussein Matt @ 43:
You're one of the lucky ones - you can afford new magazines!
dennis @ 45:
Dennis, the Dow dropping below 11000 kind of proves that the "all-time high" of a few months ago was kind of a sham, doesn't it?
Its cool, you can continue to insist that I hate America; and I'll continue to try to push for solutions.
And I'll occasionally make jokes about booze and Blondie-porn.
Maybe the GOP should replace the elephant with an ostrich.

please. before you venture into this discussion try to understand the argument. for now, at least to me, you are simply just another of the legions of people who support policies that hurt themselves. a type of self-imposed punishment.

Who said it was a "shame"? Prove it. We'll wait.....
Yesterday you called me an "asshole", today it's "freak". It appears you sickness and obsession with me is festering and metastasizing.
Old Billy Hussein @ 47:
princess was also quick to give credit to herr dubyah when the Dow as above 14,000....now she just resorts to calling people “asshole” and “freak” when it has dropped below 11,000. How telling....
Oil is approaching $148 barrel. It should be $150 by next week. But, this is good news....according to the reich-wing. It proves that capitalism works.

It was only briefly over 14,000. But wherever it was ranging between 12,000 to 14,000 it was due to an artifcial inflation, primarily in real estate. I was predicting then that the bubble would pop. And now it has.
Of course you probably blamed the Dems who have only had control, marginally, for 6.5 years. And everything they try to pass to fix the situation, the republicans block, filibuster, and if it gets through, vetoed.
Old Billy Hussein @ 47:
I like it. you'd have to put all the stars on its ass, but the stripes can go all the way down the GOP's cowardly gibblet neck.
And I might recommend not feeding the troll, he's been bothering people since last night with this kinda crap. seriously, find a more productive outlet for your angst, Dennis. no one here cares how much you hate the lefties, they're just upset enough at trolls like you to be drawn into an argument.
