Responding to McCain's use of Paris Hilton in an attack ad, Kathy Hilton reponds via The Huffington Post:

I've been asked again and again for my response to the now infamous McCain celebrity ad. I actually have three responses. It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign. It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States.

OK Kathy, then why don't you fund the Democrats who are less likely to use smears. Oh, that's right. You are a rich celebrity who enjoys the tax bresks McCain and others give you. Give me a break!

Holy cow (pardon the expression).

How can the woman who raised Paris Hilton talk such sense?

Wow. Her astute commentary only makes her daughter's public persona all the more perplexing. With a mom like Kathy, maybe Paris really IS simply putting on an act, beneath which she is a brilliant, profound thinker!

Naaaah.

we all know what it is.....it's negative and belittling linguistic/visual framing. i've personally have said for months that the obama campaign should denounce the
"celebrity" and the "rock star" identity......trying to frame into a fade, inexperienced, too young, not ready....this is for certain demographic that is saying/believing this nonsense. this is very typical of dirty politics. i'm fully aware some of this was going on during the dem.primaries. it's not funny and cute and all that old dude bullshxt from lieberman or lameberman

So?

So?

Unfortunately, the general public seems to equate wealth and power with wisdom, even when confronted with such stark examples as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, and a squillion other of the gilded brain-dead, spread across the social pages like smeared excrement.

Welcome to the gaffe a day bent talk express where our message management is so wildly derailed that we antagonize the very sorts we are trying to enlist in our demented stab at an office we can't possibly occupy with any skill or competence. But pig media loves us anyway.

Gramps: The hollow shell.

Looks like McSame's pissing off part of his base, the super rich.

I wanna scream it loud enough the whole nation hears it:

RONALD REAGAN WAS A CELEBRITY BEFORE HE WAS A POLITICIAN

NO REPUBLICAN COMPLAINED ABOUT HIS LEADERSHIP ABILITIES

ok .. no more screaming .. for a while at least ..

Yah, cause there is no way the media would run with the ball if they happened to have a popular falsehood that people would simply buy into.

The lady showed that she has a brain. Now I wonder will she use her brain when she vote?

The elitist neocon Republicans have already told Kathy Hilton to shut up. I doubt we'll hear anything else from her about Mccain's use of her daughter's name.

Pretty awful when the mother of the no-talent career bimbo Paris can so easily give Grandpa a mental bitch slap.

And the man now running McCain's campaign ran Ahnold's re-election as the guhvinor of Culifornia

If I had that kind of cash to donate to a political campaign and was so concerned about the housing crisis and such, I would not be giving that donation to any Republicans any time soon, but I suppose that's just me.

Maybe now the Hilton's will realize they've made a mistake...or maybe not!

Ah...yes. But it works!

And that's the ironic part of down-in-the-gutter, shameless, attack ads. People buy into them. So you can't blame the politicians for using them. Blame the stupid Americans who buy into it. And that's most of us.

Obama is wasting his supporters contributions by passively trying to defend himself from the smears of McCain.

Obama better wise up now and go on offense or his supporters will abandon him as they should, just like they should have abandoned John Kerry.

I fully expect that once Barack Obama loses by "taking the high road", he will come on stage during his defeat speech and then run off the stage like John Kerry did. With his only response being "oopsie, we did it again"

I never thought I'd hear a Hilton actually speaking sense. Has anyone seen four horsemen yet?

Too bad McCain got the money first though.

What I want to know is does Paris Hilton have a brother, London Hilton? I guess Paris's parents must have conceived her at there hotel in Paris. Just goes to show being rich doesn't mean you don't do tacky things like name your child after one of your hotels.

maybe your correct on being able to use this maybe the obama campaign should do a clever passive/aggressive
ad........to the effect of ..no i'm not a celebrity like the late great ronald reagan you are confused...do you see where i'm going anyways it's a good point..there comeback will be he had executive experience..my understanding is that initially the (R) party didn't want reagan now he's a god....why he started the privitization movement and amnesty immigrants all big business goodies.....

I think Dubai Hyatt would be a good name for a boy born to the Hyatt family. Got a nice ring to it.

Wow, so your own daughter is used in a political smear by someone you gave money to, and that's the best you've got? A waste of money? I don't care who my daughter sucked off on the internet. If a politician I supported dared to use her as a smear tactic, I would damn straight call him out on it. Everything Paris Hilton has ever done makes a great deal more sense to me now. What a towering c*nt of a mother.

Duh.

You got to remember green (money) is thicker than blood with Republicans. They will hang their own kids out to dry for an upper class tax cut. Dick Cheney is a member of a party who thinks his daughter doesn't deserve equal rights and believe she is going to burn in hell for who she is. With all the "family values" talk from the crowd the only thing a Republican values a dollar, power and greed.

If she had a brain she wouldn't have supported McCain in the first place.

She hasn't even asked for a refund of the money she donated to McStains campaign?

I think the responses over on the Huffington Post show a lot more awareness than most the the posts here btw.

Somebody over at HP pointed out that in advertising, it's illegal to use someone's image without contractual agreements in place. Now something tells me the McCain campaign has no such contractual agreements with either Ms. Hilton or Ms. Spears. I would love to see some legal action, say the Spears and the Hiltons sue the McCain campaign. Wouldn't it be lovely?

I think all I have left to say on these Rovian advertisements McCain is now blitzing the airwaves with, is that if the American electorate is so easily swayed by such tactics and another Republican wins the 08 election, than I will just have very little hope left for our nation. It's very disturbing to witness just how unaware so many Americans are.

Jeon Ji-Yung @ 30:

Actually, I think it was a good thing that she said some of the things she did say. As regards to her comment about McCain wasting money, it will make many of his potential contributors think twice before they write a check. Not only that, it may help people to understand that if he cares so little about his contributor's donations, he will care even less about those of us who didn't fork over the dough for him.

I hope the Hiltons have come to their senses and now know who they should be voting for! The rethuglican party is a joke these days! They are out of control, incompetent, hypocritical, and reprehensible! How in the world anyone could possibly vote to put McCain in the White House is beyond me. It's a criminal act. That man is in need of a padded cell, and not the Oval Office. He's so deep into the trip to dementia, the thought of McCain running the country is criminal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfkKk2C1W1c

I rest my case!

It's obvious that McCain will be the next president. Why ? :

1.) Only three months until the election and it's a dead heat even though it should be completely obvious that McCain is a dirty, negative, senile , babbling elderly man.

2.) The democrats including Obama are so polite. Americans are the most arrogant people in the world. The democrats will never have the nerve to really put McCain on the defensive.

3.) As long as Obama's lead is less than 20% McCain can steal the election. The repubs are obviously saying, "Failure is not an option."

4.) Bush, Rove, Cheney will do WHATEVER is necessary to make McCain the next president. That way -they won't be prosecuted in the U.S. for crimes.

5.) The Olympics are just around the corner so Americans will have no time to pay careful attention to the real issues. They won't read blogs etc. What with all the celebrity news, free on-line pornography, pro sports AND THE OLYMPICS they have almost zero time to make their voting decisions on anything other than the slimy McCain TV commercials.

The USA is about to completely collapse. Americans are so stupid and hated by the whole world.

Wow.

I took the Dem filters off after the dirty deeds done by the chicago machine, and their puppet, Obama. Reading C&L now makes me cringe.

Progressives were so righteous about the things that I care about; preserving the Constitution; fighting against retro immunity via redoing FISA; spoiling the pristine landscapes by not drilling for oil; making every vote count (see: Florida, circa 2000).

As well as gay marriage, equal rights, net neutrality, pro-choice options.

Now, we have a woman who was completely utterly demonized by those in her own party. The only successful 2 term Democratic President in 40 years, attacked, and dismissed.

A party divided. Young "trendy" Dems, against true Blue Dogs. We have a woman who was SOOOO Progressive in 1993, during the days of republican takeovers (remember the dirty deeds the Dem congress had just capped off, which led people to vote in republicans? No, it wasn't Bill Clinton being elected...for those who say it was, are clueless about the Dem congress' shenanigans) that she had the RADICAL idea of proposing with a straight face, UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE, to a guy who is compromising on EVERY G*D*MN issue that's near and dear to my heart.

Yes, that's "progressive."

We have people who have fought side by side with people of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds being called racist because they prefer other candidates, along with entire states, as well as nationalities (Puerto Rico).

Dirty dirty dirty. "Fairy tale" gets twisted to apply to campaign, vs. the stance on the war a candidate has, and the candidate in question continues the dirty insinuations against the opponent and her husband because it's beneficial to...the candidate.

I am ASHAMED of so-called progressives whom I once considered peers fighting for the TRUTH under the Shrub, who have now embraced utter garbage politicking, and have closed their eyes and ears to the truth, and stood by and watched the most capable of candidates be pushed aside for an inadequate man. Yes, I said INADEQUATE. Either mccain or obama are inadequate men. Oh, wait...maybe I AM racist, since McCain has an adopted daughter with dark skin. Or maybe half of the Democratic party has lost their damn minds.

God help us.

destardi...

You're not a racist... just a sexist concern troll so move the F along... nothing to see here eh?

Who the hell is Kathy Hilton, and why would I care what she thinks?

That was Paris Hilton in the ad? My eyesight is not so good any more....I thought it was Cindy McCain.

She forgot that they (the attack ads) also work, though.

I see 2004 happening all over again. As Obama runs around acting Presidential, McCain goes on the attack and it works.

Watching and understanding what Obama is doing, making allies, repairing strained relations, helping America regain some of its standing in the world is just too hard for some Americans. Its a lot easier to understand an ad attacking Obama telling them he's a spoiled celebrity.

15 second commercials are much more effective than two week trips abroad, no matter how successful those trips are.

I would like to know who is paying for all these ads, McCain is running, across this country?

McCain only has $85, million dollars to spend because he supposedly took advantage of the money given to his campaign by the government, which by now, he should be pretty close to broke.

Now if he is not, there needs to be some serious over site done to find out why.

Before they even attempt to do it, I can say with no shame at all that these fools in our national media are assisting him promote this trash, in their cheap efforts to derail Obamas campaign. They are on this ongoing mission and there is no question about who they are all working for.

Now it is a known fact that he has already violated election laws and has over spent funds, he should not have. There is an ongoing effort now to take back money he owes, yet again there is no sound what so ever from the media about his overspending his authority. What's up with that?

They have done this kind of crap for the last eight years to help the republicans so call win elections, including messing with the polling data, to get the desired message out, to give the illusion they could possibly be in the race. They do that because they are up to some serious crap with these elections, if we don't get ahead of the game.

These people will spare us nothing when it comes down to winning, including using some of our most corrupt democrats, to sell us out. Yes there are some democrats that are scared to death the party will prevail, and one name that comes to mind is Senator Dian Feinstine, who is dirty beyond reason.

It does not take much to understand why she would sell the party out, when you look and see how much money she and her husband, who happens to be a big time contractor in Iraq, are making.

Sad but so true, if you simply connect the dots. She supported Clinton, because she knew, she would prevail in her cheap sleazy scheme, of using her elected office for her own personal gains. They both are Senator's that are quick to take the fast money, from corporate America and these disgusting lobbyist. It's all a matter of record.

She is now tampering with our rights to get a free and fair voting process, by bringing forth legislation, that would enforce a process where our votes, will most likely be stolen from the right wing republicans. She claims this is the best she can come up with.

Starting tomorrow morning, we need to be all over their phones, demanding they do not support that disgusting voting package, that Feinstine, is attempting to bring forth. If this is the best she can do, tell her to keep her big ass at home, and not to bother, with any legislation at all.

McCain is so out of touch that he is making top donors wake up and turn against him.
LOL

Kathy Hilton is right on all three counts. Hard to believe someone with a pretty level head would support that man.

If Kathy Hilton is a Republican, is Paris one too?

I understand Britney Spears is also a Republican.

So is McCain's ad implying that Republicans are airheads?

3 words:

"eat the rich"

Can't believe that huffpo and especially c&l are commenting on this. The purveyors of shite that is the Hilton family can take their morale indignation and stuff it up their arse. Their daughter was used to sell a product - it simply wasn't homemade porn, cheap booze or a shitty movie.

Maybe (hopefully) the Democrats are holding fire until the distraction of the Olympics are out of the way. Once it gets closer to the election (and within everyone's attention span before voting), I'm hoping they're going to open fire with everything they've got.

Reality Check...

I am firmly an Obama supporter (And a US Navy Vet), but here are three reasons why John McCain will be our next President...

1) "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups, especially those that are willing to vote against their own best interests". Like this example, a large number of military members who think that McCain is the great military president, without knowing or caring that he voted AGAINST EVERY SINGLE bill for the welfare and benefit of our Armed forces....

2) One word, "Diebold". Well, actually "Premier Election Systems"... Diebold sold the Election Machine division to themselves and changed the name (due to all the negative publicity) but a pile of dog crap by any other name is still... a pile of dog crap.

3) Remember, there are still more racists in the U.S. than non-racists.

Add these all together, and "Audacity of Hope" may not be enough to overcome this lethal cocktail...

Your thoughts...?

It comes to something when somebody whose spent their life in unimaginable wealth and luxury has a greater grasp on reality than a man who would be president.

I wonder what the great McCain will be doing about his cheap shot at Obama, as he uses one of his top donors to play around with.

I guess many of the whites that supported this idiot, but don't have near about the kind of money Queen Hilton has, will be backing off of their support of what this fool is doing to win at all cost.

The sleaze gets mightier and mightier, as the final weeks, get closer to American people voting to put the best possible person in the office of President of the United States of America, and most all of us know that it will not be John McCain.

Our jobs from this point on is to cover all the polling places, in massive numbers, in ALL the states, cities and counties, in this country. We need to all be armed and extremely dangerous, while we defend our rights to vote for the best possible candidate. We know the precincts, that need to most Manning and they are pretty much in the neighbor hoods that would not be foolish enough to vote for McCain. The repunlicans know it also, so lets be waiting on their asses, with everything we have to blast the hell out of these nasty ass idiots. I know I will.

These people will stop and nothing, to win.

Pole Axed Or Not
TPM Reader RY keeps us posted ...

Disquieting Rasmussen numbers this morning--McCain's crying racism worked. 53% of Americans, including the same % of whites and half of all Democrats, thing that Obama's "dollar bill" remark was "racist." Only 22% think the Paris Hilton ad was racist--most of those being black people, of course (only 18% of white people took this view).
The good news this morning? God Bless David Gergen! Really--he was on This Week and said (check the video or transcript for exact wording), "When McCain's camp calls Obama "The Messiah" and "The One", he's really calling him "upitty." I'm from the South, and we understand what that means. That's code." Jake Tapper looked like he had been pole axed. Donna Brazille knew what he was talking about, of course. But GS, George Will, and Tapper had to be bluntly told the the way the world works by Mr. Blandly Bi-partisan....

Considering that the Hiltons have been sending money McCain's way, then they really know how to frivolously waste money, don't they?

Cameraman David @ 62:

I completely agree with your points, and would add a 4th and a 5th:
- a complete failure of the press corp to serv as acheck on government and instead functions as a propaganda outlet for them,
- a politicied judicial system in which party loyalty is all that matters. In a functioning Don Siegelman would have never been convicted, only in a fascist regime is this type of mock convictions possible.

Frivolous and a Waste, Trumped.

O-Force One

Barack Obama’s new campaign plane is nothing short of grand. Well, for the candidate that is.

His chair has his name and campaign logo embroidered on the back top -- “Obama ‘08” on one line and “President” underneath. ......

Read the whole thing.

Wow! Obama is saying that he's running for President? Scandalous! Shocking!

Obama is running for president? Why aren't the media all over this??!?!?!?

(And BTW, lil' d... nice link to nothing. Keep trying - one day you'll figure out all these tricky link thingies.)

TC @ 55:

She forgot that they (the attack ads) also work, though.

I see 2004 happening all over again. As Obama runs around acting Presidential, McCain goes on the attack and it works.

Watching and understanding what Obama is doing, making allies, repairing strained relations, helping America regain some of its standing in the world is just too hard for some Americans. Its a lot easier to understand an ad attacking Obama telling them he's a spoiled celebrity.

It's important to remember that a lot of Americans don't care how the rest of the world views us, as they are utterly unimportant. If they die, if we owe them money, if we ruin their environment or enslave their workers, all is well because it's only American needs that matter. Recognizing the global community is only one step away from declaring One World Government, dontcha know.

No, Blue Boy, not saying he's running for President, it's saying he already is the President.

Not scandalous or shocking. Just presumptuous. Along with his staff singing 'Happy Birthday, Mr. President' and his use of the direct likeness of the Presidential Seal in front of his podium. Now pull out your thesaurus and let your imagination run wild as to what the word 'presumptuous' connotes.

Hey lil' d... so, since we're being all literal here, is Obama saying he's only the president in 2008? Because the offending embroidery says "Obama '08." Is he saying he's president now? Is that your assertion?

. . . [I]t is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States.

And believe me, I know "frivolous."

Now...let me donate some more cash to the McCain operation.

K. Hilton

So will the Hiltons be asking for their checks back?

Money over country.

Why not get your 4,600.00 back and give it to the Obama campaign?

Can we have her response to Rush Limbaugh?

From July 31st edition of the LA Times (excerpt from John McCain Ad Irritates Many in Hollywood):

" . . . McCain's latest attempt at discrediting his handsome, photogenic young rival particularly galls stars and executives with a memory, because only eight years ago, McCain was a fixture in Hollywood fundraising circles when he tried to raise money from the very people his ad now ridicules.

At the time, dozens of people in Hollywood -- including Lear, Harrison Ford, Quincy Jones, Berry Gordy and Michael Douglas -- gave to McCain because they thought he was a Republican celebrity ď with a great personal story. And, dare we say, some celebrities, namely Warren Beatty, even became friends with the Arizona senator.

But the truth is most of Hollywood won't return McCain's calls nowadays because many of the stars and executives he initially impressed now believe the maverick stance they found so attractive was just a pose. Hollywood doesn't object to a good pose -- unless, of course, it doesn't work."

It's obvious that McCain will be the next president. Why ? :

4.) Bush, Rove, Cheney will do WHATEVER is necessary to make McCain the next president. That way -they won't be prosecuted in the U.S. for crimes.

I am not so sure that the Clintons also aren't involved. Why else would the Republicans do everything in their power to try and get Hillary on the democratic ticket? Remember that Old man Bush and Clinton became good buddies the past couple of years, and president Clinton still is saying things that put Obama in a bad light as if now the Clinton's want McCain to win. Is it so important that Obama lose this election to give Hillary the chance to run in 2012 that they would damn the country and the constitution by electing McCain?

If Obama is not elected I think democracy in this country is in real trouble, and for certain, we will never know the extent of Bush's criminal behavior and the damage this administration has done to Middle Class America!

1) If any famous Democrat spoke unfavorably about their party or candidate, he/she would be crucified. I don't particularly care for the Hiltons, but I think Kathy Hilton was accurate in her comments about McCain's ad. Why does she need to say more - the fact that she made a comment at all, and a negative one, is sufficient; and her comment, although succinct, was completely accurate. If she stood up for McCain or said nothing, we would all be criticizing her just the same. Frankly, I'm not comfortable with that. I would rather demonize people who deserve it, not those who stand up to what is wrong, and smearing Obama is wrong and dirty.

2) Remember that many wealthy individuals and corporations donate to both Republicans and Democrats. I guess you would call this covering your bet. I don't know if the any of the Hiltons, or the equity group that owns the hotels has done this, but it is a possibility. Is that right? You be the judge.

3) Whether you are Republican or Democrat, you need to have the integrity to speak out when you don't agree with your party.

4) And I agree with a previous post, I would not stand by and allow my child (adult or otherwise) be used in this fashion.

Just a side note, McCain today explained the reason his campaign took the potshot at Obama using the Hiltons heiress daughter, Paris. He said thanks for the 4600 bucks but what he could have really used was an extra blanket when he was staying at their establishment in Hanoi..... ba dum bump

Sorry, Mrs. Hilton that's what you and your husband get for donating to him. He paid you both in kind by throwing your daughter under the bus. Now you know how poor people who vote republican feel. Instead of just venting on Huffington Post, ask for your money back and say you were wrong to support McCain.

I think you 2 and Pat Riot are correct. We have a very misinformed and ignorant electorate. The middle class is shrinking. Economically speaking how different are poor blacks in urban areas and poor whites in the Appalachians? I think they've got the same problems feeding their children and filling their gas tanks to get to work. Unfortunately, people vote on emotion and less on issues.

Also, in addition to the Don Siegelman case, I can't fathom why after the House Democrats completed their first 100 days agenda did they not begin to investigate the stolen elections in 2000 and 2004 when they've been in the minority for 12 years.
