Sometimes the jokes just write themselves. On FNS, Bill Kristol was furious that President Bush went to the Beijing Olympics instead of watching it on TV because of the propaganda value that Bush gave to China against the pro-democracy agenda.

I was furious last night about that, too, because I was treated to the shock of unexpectedly seeing Bush appear on screen for an interview with Bob Costas. I actually cried out in horror!
I think the family of the Americans that were killed and injured by an angry Chinese should sue Bush. He had NO business being there fraternizing with the American athletes as if he were some kind of an elected and revered president. In fact, he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near American civilians overseas if they don't have access to body armor. Bush is a danger to American citizens. This is one of the extremely rare moments I will agree with Kristol. Bush should never have gone. And it DOES give legitimacy to the brutal authoritarian government there. This IS a big propaganda-fest for the Chinese government.

Hmm, I never agree with "William the Bloody" Kristol on anything, but I think he made some good points here. Many folks on the right and the left agree that China's record on human rights is abysmal, and that we should not be legitimizing them in any way. I think it's disgusting that the media are reporting from Tiananmen Square, where Chinese tanks ran over peaceful protesters. China lied its way into hosting the Olympics by promising to be open and to improve human rights, then it did just the opposite. I also thought those opening ceremonies were a "totalitarian propaganda spectacle." And I don't like Olympic badminton and synchronized swimming either!
I found it refreshing that Kristol made fun of himself, and that Fixed News, for once in my lifetime, had a real discussion about a real issue without injecting phony attacks and propaganda.
But what I really found delicious was the promotion by Wallace and Kristol of watching the Olympics on tv -- on NBC! I guess they didn't get O'Reilly's memo to boycott GE and NBC.

For once in my life I agree with Kristol. China is an abhorrence and we are turning our eyes away from all the environmental human rights horror shows in that country so we can trade with them. By having the Olympic there and staying silent we are condoning a way of life that we would not tolerate. It will come back to haunt us in spades as China exports its "brand" of Government to the world. Remember, it props up Burma, Zimbabwe and Darfur to name just a few murderous places round the world.

Get your own house in order, and let the Chinese and Russians tend to theirs.
China and Russia has its own fair share of activists and protester willing to risk their lives and freedoms in order to bring about positive change in their countries. The harping of an American citizenry too weak and lazy to stop their own government's decline into tyranny is hardly helpful, and not much appreciated. If you want to be productive, do something about your own government's crimes:
- join the anti-war protests
- put Obama's feet to the fire to ensure that he will be the President the US needs
- get involved in local politics and get involved in your community
Bitching about the Chinese or Russian government distracts you from the real work that needs to be done at home.
A lot of the participants of the opening ceremony (the crummers, for instance) are members of the Chinese army. That should be enough to explain their discipline.
Feel free to criticize China's wrongdoings, but right now you are just stretching.

Yes, our days of being an economic world power are over for awhile, as well as militarily and diplomatic. Our money isn't worth the paper it's printed on outside of our borders. Thanks to the aggression, meddling and pure criminality of the Bush Administration, the United States has very few friends left in the world, and the countries still call our country a 'friend' do it at arms length. Militarily we are stretched so thin it has been on the verge of breaking for quite some time now. The only thing now that guarantees the classification of 'world power' is our nuclear arsenal and the capability to deliver it anywhere in the world and a madman with his finger on the button. The United States is really no longer a world power, just a big bully with a big stick.
