Tom Delay Crashes GOP Convention, McCain Not Happy

ABC:

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tom DeLay, the former House GOP majority leader whose connections to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff brought scandal and disgrace to the Republican party, returned to the spotlight in Minneapolis last night, helping to host a private party that drew hundreds of delegates and Republican officials.

DeLay's arrival was hardly welcomed by the campaign of Sen. John McCain. McCain led the Senate investigation that revealed many of the abuses connected to Abramoff, and DeLay has criticized McCain for years.

"He is no friend of ours," said one McCain campaign official. "But you can't really keep him out of the city."Read on...

The stink of Jack Abramoff just won't wash off the GOP. First John McCain attends a fundraiser coordinated by Abramoff buddy Ralph Reed, and now the poster child for Republican corruption shows up at his convention and is lauded by the party faithful as a hero.  There's no love lost between Delay and McCain and the Bug Man's presence at his convention is a clear slap in the face. That's gonna leave a mark...

i'll bet ralph reed was their with knee pads on.

Ralph Reed. Jack Abramoff. Tom DeLay. John McCain. Jeff Gannon. Peas in a Pod.

Don't forget Larry Craig. He's actually got someone to hook up with.

They might need Delay to boost McCain's fundraising soon!

ReThuliCan'ts are a bunch of crime-filled crackheads. There. I said it.

Watch the Noonan video at TPM! "its over..."

Palin will bail on McCain and Delay is in town to take up the torch! He's the new Vetted by Fire VP Candidate!!!!

Clash of the narcissistic egos!

Too bad the byline city is wrong.

Hahaha. It's Hammer time, McCain!

They can't keep Delay out of the city? Who do those cops work for? Just grab his ID and throw him in the slammer for a coupla days...

Face it McGrandpa, your base loves this POS. You should just be happy that you were not told that the bug man would be your VP nominee. You've come this far, sold off this much of your soul and self respect. Why put up a fight now?

There is definitely Physics involved here.

Take a bunch of turds and put them in a bowl and they all move closer together.

Hopefully someone will remember to Flush.

this is the best video by bill moyers that aired a month ago regarding reed, delay and abramoff(sp) it's very good

hey, john, it's your party, it's his party and until you divorce yourself completely from that party, they you are tied to the party and all of its indiscretions. Got It????

when you go to dinner with cannibals and
stupidly jump into the stew pot........
you can only expect to be the dinner!

Can't they just send some of those hippie-raiding police around to his room and "advise" him that there will be no disruptions to the convention?

Or does that only work on peace activist?

Jeez, Don't these guys ever leave? Why can't they just retire? Why doesn't he go back to exterminating? He is like a bad rash.

OMG!!! this is worth its own post. kryptonite.

I've been saying this since Obama won the Democratic nomination. John McCain WILL NOT garner 200 Electoral votes and he will lose the Popular vote by double digits. Democrats are going to end up with 59 or 60 Senate seats. Dole and Coleman will lose their elections.

Well, they said they wanted to Delay the convention for Gustav.

Just wait -- the conservatives are going to demand that Keith Olbermann be dispatched to St. Paul to supervise the cutting off of republican pundit's mikes. Or at least hand out shovels so they can bury themselves. Best thing I've heard all day.

They brought the whole bang of thieves back. It is a wonder they didn't parole Abramoff for the party. They are all tied together like a band of thieves that they are. McSame is a thug like Abramoff, DeLay, Santorum, George Allen, et al. The GoP is a crime family.

If there's no love lost between McCain and DeLay, it's only because DeLay broke a cardinal political rule- he got busted.

Leave it to the Republicans to turn everything they do into an utter fiasco.

The republican convention is turning into a circus and McCain is starring as Bozo the Clown.

This is a great site.

But the basic premise here is R (bad) vs. D (relatively speaking, good).

Evil fucks control both parties.

R or D, it really doesn't matter, except in terms of tone and perception.

The senate, after all, could have blocked Alito or Roberts. It was DEMS that let those two fucks sail onto the Supreme Court.

Sure. Vote Dem. Your closest friends will tell you it's the right thing to do. They'll tell you, at least it's the lesser of two evils.

Evil A. Evil B. Evil anyway you look at it.

If he won't stand up to DeLay, how is he going to stand up to the terrorists?!

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, this is a first for me. Today we got an ad for McCain in our mail. Inside the fold out ad are two cards you can fill out tear off and send in to get an absentee ballot. One little card for my husband and one for me. They are addressed to our Supervisor of Elections here in my county.

I have never ever received a campaign ad accompanied by anything that would enable me to get an absentee ballot. Has anyone else ever received something like this in the mail?

Seems the McCain campaign would want everyone to get out and vote, take others to vote, instead of staying home and voting by mail via absentee vote.

As for Tom Delay, he's like the roaches he used to exterminate, no matter what you use, they always come back. And why isn't the bastard in jail?

This is a political "all you can eat" buffet of every kind of wrong judgment, mistake, and mismanagement you could ever hope for. Keep it up republicans, I am vacillating between mirth and hilarity.

What's Delay doing pictured next to Popeye?

“But you can’t really keep him out of the city.”

Can't seem to put him in jail either.

pissed@42, I have never heard of that before. It seems suspicious. As for Delay, you think he would enjoy killing bugs and rodents again.

HelenWheels @ 45:

Droopy Tompson was on stage last night, all my childhood cartoons are flashing before my eyes. Funny, they didn't seem that scary when I was a kid.

As Rome was collapsing (which took a couple hundred years, or more), there were sites like this.

Some bought into the system.

Some bought into the system but wanted change.

Some simply were nihilists and said, fuck the system.

Some went quietly into the future and gained power.

Wouldn't you like to see a Democratic campaign ad which simply scrolled all of the Bush-Republican scandals, misdeeds and crimes that occurred over the past eight years? Problem would be finding someone to pay for the ad since the scroll could probably go on for hours.

Oh, this is sweet!

I never thought I'd live to see a day when I would say, "thank you, Mr. Hammer." But you just made my day!

Folks wanting to see the off mike video of Noonan et al can head over to FDL and chat there, too.

Back to the bugman...

pissed@42,

Wonder if this could be some new angle for voter caging. If you are a registered democrat, then I would say that it is for sure. Don't some states have some requirement that you have to have some kind of documentation to vote absentee? This would give them the right to challenge your vote.I am not at all sure about this, but maybe the republicans have figured out an angle here.

Not to criticize your journalistic style, but I think a better headline would have read "Bug Man infests GOP Convention".

Headline: "The Hammer comes to Exterminate Cockroaches at RNC."

Delay is in da house! It keeps getting better and better. At this point McCain should just blow is own POW head off and go for the sympathy vote!

LOL! Nice choice of pics -- Bugman's mugshot and McGramp's doing his Curly Howard imitation.

IF there is a human being on this planet more dispicable than Tom Delay, please let me know about it. Just drop me an e-mail.

They all spitin' their tobackee chew right on the floor, right by our feet, and saying right to our faces, ..."BRING IT ON!" "I DARE YA!",

"CAN'T TOUCH THIS, ....CAN YA!" Ah,ha,ha,ha!!!

C&L - Keep up the great work (overall), but inaccurate reporting is bad work. Ralph Reed did hold a fundraiser for McCain. The amount raised was reported to be $1.75 Million. But McCain DID NOT ATTEND. Considering the amount and the host, McCain was wise to take the $ and not show up.

POP, notify your neighbors and all of the media. The RNC cannot issue ballots.

If he sprayed the convention all the cockroaches would die, and there'd be no one there.

So far we've got the Paul convention, Delay's mini delegation, the current administration in hiding and the entire party in a state of shock over the vp pick.
So much for 'party unity'.

Crashed the convention? Where are all those riot police I keep hearing about? I guess they arrest only non-republicans.

Tom DeLay at the convention is a problem for McCain? But didn't McCain just pick a VP to appease Ralph Reed?

Here is a good link and video to the original Jack Abramoff, Ralph Reed, Tom DeLay story in case anybody missed it:
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/08012008/profile.html

I think this is quite possibly this is a set up.

DeLay shows up, gets trounced by McCain's handlers because he's "corrupt," and McCain gets to say he's a "Maverick" and pretend he's not in that same corruption clique in Washington...

Am I just an idiot? Wasn't Delay convicted? Isn't he supposed to pull some jail time?

Come on now with the McCain picture. That's so Fox News, whether if it's real or Photoshopped like a Sarah Palin pregnancy photo.

the Democratic Party is a lot like a box of chocolates; you're never sure where the nuts are - whereas the Republican Party is a lot like a chocolate fudge sundae, they tend to put the biggest nuts right on top

http://www.blogoffanddie.wordpress.com

I would never hit someone with a hockey stick, unless of course, we were playing hockey. Then I swing at anything that moves.

Let me get this straight... a disgraced former Congressman whose corruption was so deep and well-documented that his own party's Presidential nominee, who personally led an investigation exposing that corruption, shuns him openly at the party's national convention... and yet that person hosts a private party in town during the convention that draws "hundreds of delegates and Republican officials"?

Is the corruption so deeply embedded in our system of "representative" government now, that we applaud such people as if they were celebrities, rather than shame them into obscurity?

Here's what I think he means - sort of what I've thought for decades. Our whole politcal system is really pretty rotten, almost to the core. I'm too old to be naive about this . We have two parties that tightly control everything - ever try to run for office???

What we should have been doing in this country is breaking the system and allowing a lot more political parties, with ONLY public financing, and some sort of regulated qualification standards for preliminary candidates (LIE detector tests would be a good start!).

That being said, sine the system is not yet fixed - and the choice is between McCain or Obama - four years more of idiocy, corruption, lies ,war; or, the slim possibility that having Obama in office for a while would give us some breathing room to make changes - I'm goin' with Obama.

So they can keep Democracy Now out but not Tom Delay?

I couldn't think of any reason to be happy that Tom DeLay was in my state. He gave me a reason. You're a sweetheart Tom.

I heard Delay interviewed on the "Brian and The Judge" radio program this morning. He sounded drunk. Brian Kilmeade kept yapping about how happy Delay looked.

Evil fucks control both parties.

R or D, it really doesn't matter, except in terms of tone and perception.

Absolutely spot on. Our political system is nothing more than a never ending tug of war between two groups of people so mired in corruption perpetuated by the greed of corporations that true democracy cannot possibly succeed in the current environment. My entire short life as a registered Democrat is based on the lesser of two evils idea.

Imagine if there were publicly-funded elections and more than a dozen viable parties from which to choose. Imagine if 90% of adults cast a ballot. That would be a democracy. What we have now is more like an auction with a lot of media bullshit to weigh the pros and cons of the "goods".

I had heard a report that the Rethugs held a party that featured Hookers & Blow, but I thought that was the name of the band.

Orangutan. @ 35:

Isn't Rove supposed to be under Subpoena. Why the fuck do all these criminals get away without serving time or testifying. What was the sentence on DeLay and who is holding them accountable. We suck.

October 3, 2005: DeLay's lawyers filed a motion to throw out the charge of conspiracy to violate election law as fraudulent, claiming it was a violation of the U.S. Constitution's ban on ex-post facto applications of law. DeLay's lawyers claim that, in 2002, the crime of conspiracy did not apply to Texas election law. However, George Dix, a law professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said that charges of criminal conspiracy could legally be applied to any felony (including violation of election law) committed prior to the 2003 law. He characterized the 2003 change cited by DeLay's lawyers as a clarification of existing law, saying, "It isn't unheard of–the Legislature passing a law to make clear what the law is." Because the Texas Penal Code defines laundered money only as money gained as the "proceeds of criminal activity", DeLay's lawyers maintain that misuse of corporate donations, even if it occurred, could not constitute money laundering.
October 7, 2005: DeLay's attorneys filed a motion in court to have the latest indictment thrown out, charging that Earle coerced the grand jury and illegally discussed grand jury information and encouraged others to do the same.[7]
October 19, 2005: A Texas court issued a warrant for DeLay's arrest[8]. DeLay surrendered at the Harris County, Texas jail the next day, was booked, was photographed, was fingerprinted, and posted a $10,000 bond.[9]
October 21, 2005: DeLay appeared in court.[10]
November 1, 2005: DeLay prevailed in a motion to remove assigned Travis County judge Bob Perkins from the case. Perkins had donated to Democratic candidates and organizations, including MoveOn.org. DeLay's attorneys argued Perkins could not be publicly perceived as impartial under the circumstances. DeLay is also attempting to have the venue changed from Democratic-leaning Travis County.
November 3, 2005: Pat Priest, a "semi-retired" judge, was chosen to preside over the case.[11]
November 22, 2005: DeLay filed a motion to dismiss the charges against him.[12]
December 5, 2005: Judge Priest dismissed one count, conspiracy to violate election law, but let stand two counts alleging money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.[13]
April 19, 2006: The Texas Third Court of Appeals upheld the decision to dismiss the charge of conspiracy to violate election law.[14]
May 19, 2006: Prosecutors filed an appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the state's highest criminal court, to reinstate the conspiracy indictment.[15]
June 27, 2007: The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled 5-4 to uphold the decisions of the lower courts and throw out the conspiracy to violate election law charge.[16]

And the bullshit goes round and round.

The republicans are trying to hide themselves from the American people.

REMIND AMERICA OBAMA!

Expose the republicans and make them own thier failures!!

Where were the military style swat teams, the rubber bullets, the exploding tear gas when Tom DeLay can to town. The Republicans greeted Activists with brute force why is Tom DeLay off limits. :) :) :p

Of course Tom Delay is going to show up! He may be in disgrace to he rest of us, but he still represents the heart and soul of the GOP: get connected, get money, get gone. McSame has to at least appear to be distancing himself from the criminals. McCain's mistake? He should have resigned from the GOP in 2004 and declared himself an independant. He could have MAYBE had a chance at the White House. One cannot be Republican and bipartisan in the brave new world of neo-conservative politics. Bipartisanship = Liberal = Communitst = Satan.
