Harry Reid Puts Lieberman On Notice

(h/t FDL for the video) Anita Dunn gave us an indication something was finally brewing. It's on CNS, but the word I have so far is it's true.
Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent and a close friend of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, still caucuses with Democrats, which allows them to control the Senate with a 51-49 majority . A spokesman for Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., indicated Thursday that Lieberman may no longer be welcome.
"Lieberman went too far when he distorted Sen. Obama's record," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. "From Reid's perspective, (Lieberman) has every right to give a partisan speech to whomever he wants. But he doesn't have the right to distort Sen. Obama's record like that. Sen. Reid was very disappointed in Lieberman's speech."
Added Manley: "The Democratic caucus will likely revisit Lieberman's situation after the November elections."
Asked if Reid was putting Lieberman on notice, Manley replied: "Without overplaying it, the answer is, yes."
I'm not sure what that means yet, but it is a step in the right direction that took way too long to happen. He's smeared Obama endlessly. The Democratic Party should have taken much stronger action against Joe many moons ago.

The sad thing is that these positions need a diplomatic, but tough individual who can cross the aisle to cut deals, but smack the crap out of the Dems to keep them in line and get Obama's agenda through the pipe and Biden would have been good for this. They need to be respected by both parties, but tough and pragmatic.
This deserves some thought.

As a matter of self-respect the Democrats need to dump Lieberman, but as a matter of practicality, of course, they need Lieberman's vote until they can get at least a small cushion in numbers.
The same can't be said for why Democrats have continued to allow Harry Reid to be Majority Leader. Unless they are willing to replace him with someone who is more competent and tougher, the Republicans will continue to roll the Democrats in the Senate. Majority Leader is not a position for an incompetent buffoon and Harry Reid is nothing if not that.
Worst case scenario? 1) The Democrats get enough Senate seats to be filibuster-proof, but only if Lieberman caucuses with them; and 2) Democrats allow Reid to continue as Majority Leader.

To be fair, Harry Reid needed a valid excuse to act against Lieberman that didn't paint him as the bad guy (media circus and all). By citing Lieberman's intentional distortion of Obama's actions and policies, he now has what the media will allow as a valid reason to boot Lieberman.

Liebermann rubs me the wrong way but I accept his right to vote as he wishes in the senate. That is what he was elected to do so let CT worry about that aspect. However, I do not accept opinions that maligns or misrepresents another person. When are we going to get some campaign rules: only discuss what you propose or what you would do differently IF you identify someone with whom you disagree. This spin stuff has gotten way out of control.
You have to be a consummate liar to be in the re-PIG-lic party.
You also have to be willing to destroy anyone who threatens full achievement of their nefarious goals.

Ending funding for the Iraq war was the reason the Dems were voted back in power in 2006; The Dems have enabled the repub's to claim high ground. Now, the conversation starts with "The 'surge' has succeeded..." and the Dems again are silent on this falsehood as well.
If the Dem's meant business, Rove would be in jail, and bush and his crooked staff would have been brought up on charges and facing impeachment; this election would be an afterthought.
The Dem's silence on the high crimes and election fraud are perceived as capitulation.

I don't disagree. Of course, that's what I meant. Still, it's a tough call when your choice is to allow yourself to be jerked around by a creep like Lieberman or relinquish power to the Republicans. I belief the bigger problem is Reid as Majority Leader. He reeks of weakness. The position the Democrats are in requires a politician of consummate skill, something that Reid is not and never will be.

This is becoming a pet peeve of mine, the notion that the D's hold a 51-49 majority in the US Senate.

The split is 49 (D), 49 (R), one true independent (Bernie Sanders) and one pseudo-independent who caucuses with the D's. Harry Reid controls the gavel because the Senate PLURALITY comes up as 50 the hard way to 49 to 1 by party affiliation. A majority is half plus one... A plurality is more than anyone else and at the moment that's 49 plus GOP Joe. Hence the relative ease the GOP has in bottling up legislation by forcing a 60 vote majority on things they don't like. Do some research on Sen Coburn... AKA Doctor No! and you'll see how this works.

Yes, It's embarrassing to hear Lieberman referred to as a Democrat. I'd rather hear that he's an independent (sorry, let me stop gagging first) than a Dem who has switched because he saw how wonderful the R ticket is.
Does his vote really make that much difference now? He's spending so much time on the campaign that he probably isn't making many votes--and the Republicans have so stymied any Democratic effort to pass *any* legislation with or without him that Ds really have no majority, certainly no control.
What's to stop Lieberman from officially resigning from the Democratic Party right now and officially joining the Republican Party right now? That would give the Republicans 50 Senators to the Democrats' 49 + Sen Sanders, which would mean, effectively, a tie, which would mean that the Republican Vice President From Hell, "Old Scratch" Cheney would be the tie breaker and give control of the Senate to the Republicans (until early January, when a third of them will be going home for good.)
Of course, if that happens, NOTHING will get done, including passing appropriations bills and continuing resolutions to keep the government operating (just like when the Republicans had total control of the government.)

The Democrats are guaranteed to pick up at least 5 Senate seats but I'm gunning for a real filibuster proof majority without Joe Traitorman. This is the problem with our democratic party they have let republicans run as democrats on our primary ticket and screwed our party up.
Now we have 40 some republicans elected as democrat blue dogs, and there goes our control of the House Of Representatives....
Bush even had a private meeting with the blue dogs after the 2006 election. Must have told them it was time for their republican votes because they no longer had the majority.
Democratic voters had also better start looking at other democrats like Mikulski:
She has voted for Bush's war , surge , NAFTA , illegal spying , funding the war. She does vote of local programs but the trouble with that is once you destroy our job market there are no funds for our infrastructure , social programs and when the jobs are sent out they never come back.
Look at the destruction of our jobs to 2007 by NAFTA....

We lost three million manufacturing jobs during NAFTA. That's one--

Couldn't agree with you more. We have stealth Repubs in the Dem party. I don't see how we can get around this without the Dem party itself helping to primary the Blue Dogs. But as shown by recent events, that will never happen.
All the Dem party cares about is advertising of their brand name, whether Blue Dog or whatever.
The only reason (I think) why Lieberman hasn't already switched parties and handed control of the Senate back to Republicans is possibly because one of the moderate Republicans has informed him that if Lieberman does such an insane thing then that moderate Republican (or more than one) will vote to keep Democrats in charge.
In other words, moderate Republicans feel betrayed by the hardcore neo-con Republicans, with the moderate Republicans being treated like crap in the neo-con Republican-controlled Senate, just like the Democrats were treated. No voice. No bi-partisanship.
So, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some of the more sane, more adult, more patriotic, more country-first, more moderate Republicans have warned Lieberman, which is why he continues to caucus with Democrats even though he's given his heart and his soul to Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, and the hardcore zealot wing of the Republican Party.
Nothing like democrats scorned. The anger of pussies. Harry Reid is a complete moron. The end.
