Joe Biden stepped up and took an aggressive position against McCain on the newest market meltdown. In McCain's world, everything is fundamentally fine.
"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."
All hail Conservatism and their destructive policies. Wall Street bears witness to them as Lehman and Merrill rock The Street.
The venerable Lehman Brothers investment bank said early Monday that it will file for bankruptcy, while Bank of America unveiled plans to buy Merrill Lynch -- two pieces of news that profoundly alter the American financial landscape...
And how could I forget the mess that is AIG...

I think now is a great time to bring out Bill Clinton in an ad talking about and comparing the economies of the nineties vs. the past 8 years.
Bring out the Social Security privatization plan of McCain - would YOU want your retirement tied up in the current market????
The 2 largest corporate bankruptcies EVER during the last 8 years.
How many more if we have another 4 years of the same failed policies????
Some of the largest tax-payer funded corporate bail-outs.
Profits are for the wealthy - working people pick up the losses, according to the past 8 years.
Tax cuts are for the wealthy - working people pay more for everything else.
Healthcare affordable for the wealthy - working people and Vets can do with inadequate or without health insurance altogether.
Retirement is for the wealthy - working people can just keep on working.
IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!
The Lehman/Merrill Lynch/AIG thing is what's really insane - it's easy to be out of touch with the regular guy who's hurting, but to be a supposed power broker and be oblivious to the collapse of Wall Street is nuts.
Frist, BTW.

I mean...he was engaged during Ike. Or does he only care about Texas.
Why oh WHY does GW Bush hate Wall Street?!?!
It is the Economy, Stupid. But raising taxes and creating more social programs is the LAST thing we need. We need to STOP GOVERNMENT SPENDING!!!
Stopping all the wars and bringing all the troops home would save OVER 1 TRILLION a year, and that is a good place to start. Stopping foreign aid would save Billions. When Obama or Biden start talking about that then maybe I will believe them.
The great Republican swindle continues.
...or Sean Hannity!

My father and grandfather have seen this time coming since I was a kid. They both recognized the paradigm of the ever expanding economy developed after WW II for the fantasy that it is. It's been amazing how long the rich and powerful have been able to hold it together with behind the scenes manipulation while publicly extolling the invincibility of "free market capitalism." Apparently they've run out of bubble gum and baling wire and the bloated, paper based monstrosity is coming apart at the seams. My hope is it has to die in order for something sustainable and just to take its place.
Hey, a guy can dream so don't harsh my buzz too totally.
And if you ran into Grandpa, he'd lie and swear he didn't say that.

Any first semester macroeconomics student will tell you that stopping government spending is the LAST thing you do. The GDP depends on consumer/business/government spending. When the first two slow down or stop, if the latter one does too, the entire stack of cards will collapse.

Hey Innocent Bystander! Don't mess with my Tina Fey! Oh wait...
Oh come on, you guys know by now that this is, in the words of george bush, just a "rough patch". Yep, a rough patch. Nothing to worry about.
Seems to me the rough patches are today outweighing the smooth patches.
In McCain's world it's smooth sailing because in his world the money is endless. That's like me, who has never been a mother, telling a young mother how to feel if her baby is endlessly crying. I wouldn't know what the fu*k I was talking about and neither does McCain
Bad economic news will be bad for the Reps. But they'll spin it somehow to say "this is why we need someone like Sarah Palin" blah-blah-blah. Or else they'll gin up another false controversy about some innocent remark.
Amen, Cminca! Amen!
Shortly after George W. Bush was elected president, Congress and President Clinton were trying to pass a $384 billion omnibus spending bill, and while the debates swirled around the passage of this bill, Senator Phil Gramm clandestinely slipped a 262-page amendment into the omnibus appropriations bill titled: Commodity Futures Modernization Act. It is likely that few senators read this bill, if any. The essence of the act was the deregulation of derivatives trading (financial instruments whose value changes in response to the changes in underlying variables; the main use of derivatives is to reduce risk for one party). The legislation contained a provision -- lobbied for by Enron, a major campaign contributor to Gramm -- that exempted energy trading from regulatory oversight. Basically, it gave way to the Enron debacle and ushered in the new era of unregulated securities. Interestingly enough, Gramm's wife, Wendy, had been part of the Enron board, and her salary and stock income brought in between $900,000 and $1.8 million to the Gramm household, prior to the passage of the Commodity Futures Modernization Act.

Kudos to Biden! He hits exactly the right notes. I think he will make mincemeat of Palin in the debates, although he has to be a little careful not to misspeak or to attack her directly. Attacking the platform or what she has said or done as a public official should be more than enough. Thank you, Senator!

That's interesting...do you have a link?...
Okay, does anybody have a run down on the political affiliations of all these "bailouts"?
How about the ones that are potentially at risk now?
Could we possibly look into our crystal ball and see who will get helped as opposed to who will not because of political contributions if their financial situation gets precarious?...
As Duncan Black just pointed out and as I heard refrenced just now in an AP radio news update, the "fundamentals of the economy are strong" is now framed by McCain as strong workers and small businesses. The reference is the evil NY money men are causing the "difficulty" for the strong folks. So now the Rovians will switch the debate when Obiden complaign about the economy, they are actully disparaging the fundamentally strong workers and small businesses of this great country. Watch it happen.

You have several things right and several things wrong.
Right, it is the economy.
Wrong, we do need more social programs. Universal Health Care so we can compete with the rest of the industrialized world. Better education so we can compete with China and India who graduate more engineers than we do. Those are social programs that we can't do without. They will not cost more than what we have now. The Fat Cats that will not be making the killing that they do now want you to believe otherwise.
Right and Wrong, we need to stop the Military Industrial Complex swindle which has brought us to borrow and spend. We need to stop spending beyond our means.
Right, stop the 'wars'. War is a racket, THAT is the SWINDLE. It is not quite a TRILLION but it is close.
Wrong, stopping foreign aid. Foreign aid IS only a few Billion, which is real money but we are way way down on the list as far as foreign aid goes. It is like the reference to 'earmarks', a drop in the bucket. It is money well spent when tied to something positive. The Japanese who tend to be much more about these things than we are way up on the list of foreign aid contributors. They will donate to a needing country and then proceed to sell them something useful, like a phone system. Unfortunately we don't make anymore much except military hardware.

John McCain...An American Hero, or a Weak Traitor?
John McCain tells us about his capture in his acceptance speech.
His interviews while a POW tell us a completely different story. We
know from his campaign speeches and advertisements that he's an
unrepentant liar. Now we find out that he's lied so he can be cast as
a war hero.
John McCain suffered greatly during his five years of captivity in the
"Hanoi Hilton." But his horrific experiences do not entitle him to stretch
the truth about his captivity at the hands of North Vietnamese Communists,
nor to lie and deceive Americans about his bravery and heroism.
From John McCain's 2008 Acceptance Speech:
"Then I found myself falling toward the middle of a small lake in the
city of Hanoi, with two broken arms, a broken leg, and an angry crowd
waiting to greet me."
"I was dumped in a dark cell and left to die. I didn't feel so tough
anymore. When they discovered my father was an admiral, they took
me to a hospital. They couldn't set my bones properly, so they just slapped
a cast on me. "
Interview by French Reporter Francois Chalais, January 1968
pdf file at
"Unconscious, I fell in a lake, some Vietnamese jumped into the water and
pulled me out...They immediately took me to the hospital, in a condition
two inches away from death. A doctor operated on my thigh. Others at the
same time dealt with my arms.
Broadcast to South Vietnam, 2 June 1969
pdf file at
"After I was captured I was taken from a hospital in (?Da Nang) where I
received very good medical treatment. I was given an operation on my leg,
which allowed me to walk again, and a cast for my right arm which was badly
broken in three places. The doctors were very good and they knew a great
deal about the practice of medicine. "
Interview with Dr. Fernando Barral for Cuban media, January 24, 1970

"..I landed in one of the lakes in the center of Hanoi, in the middle of the
water. On landing I tried to get free of my parachute, but could not move,
and did not realize why I could not move my arms or legs, but it was
because of the injuries.”
“From there, they took me to a military hospital in Hanoi, a large hospital
where they operated on me and attended to the multiple fractures.….”
Read the transcripts of propaganda John McCain made for the Communists while
he was a Prisoner of War. Not only is John McCain lying about his capture,
and definitely not a war hero, he is a weakling and a traitor. The first
interviews were done on November 9th, 1967. John McCain was shot down just
14 days earlier on October 26th.
Today, McCain admits that three to four days after he was captured, he
promised the Vietnamese, “I’ll give you military information if you will
take me to the hospital.”
CODE OF CONDUCT: If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means
available.
32 propaganda recordings were made my McCain in exchange for favorable
treatment while in Vietnam. A June 5th 1969 news article on McCain, “Reds
Say PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral” exposed John McCain for what he
was...a traitor.

Just breaking... Petraeus is stepping down as of tomorrow.
uncle joe mccarthy @ 116:
There was 5 and a half years when John McCain couldn't be a chicken. He was stuck in a hole, you see. POW
Biden has to be careful not to come across as smug when he debates Palin.
Gore snickered at Bush in 2000, and it backfired.
Kerry did the same thing to Bush in 2004.
Biden is far better informed than Palin about every issue across the board, but he could blow it too if he doesn't treat her with respect while cutting the legs out from under her on the issues in the debate.
dennis @ 77:
The sheep says....BAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Wow dennis...I seem to remember you trolls trying to condemn Obama for his oratory skills...flip flop much?
A moderate Democrat?!?! WTF?!?!?! Are you on meth?!
She's out neo-cons Cheney for chrissakes! Moderate Democrat my ass.
I gotta admit...your becoming funnier as you become more and more desperate.
Ah I LOVE THIS!

Mammoths are delicious! Tastes like spotted owl!
maybe it's my obvious bias getting in the way. when
i listen to governor palin speak about the economy
and/or the foreign policies i get this feeling it's the first
time she's ever literally spoke these words.

He's gettin' promoted.

Excellent point!
We can't get too cocky...or we could lose this thing. GAH!

Its not just you. If you can get past the voice, watch the body language. She's way outside of her comfort zone.
Left&Left @ 95:
Left², I don't have the heart to tell you this, but no one is showing up to hear Biden speak. If you thought there was substance in that clip then I've got a jet airplane to sell you that I couldn't on Ebay. Biden only did some of the old sniping that's been around for a couple weeks, pausing and emphasizing the 'divorced' word, deviously clipping a quote McCain made today about the economy, and then calling him out of touch. He knows that gets on the tube tonight, because as cheap as those soundbites were, it's the only way he gets TV exposure.
Let's see tonight which speech gets the most airtime; which one is talked about for substance and which one is noted for the usual sniping. Even this golden opportunity of a major investment bank failure, for which Democrats can't contain their glee over, is likely to be yet another hand overplayed by Team Obama.

Ohh..sorrrry sorry...I just had this impulse!!!

Like I have always said the worse kind of boss is one that is stupid and stubborn....
Stupid is easy to work around...
Simply work around them in a way they do not perceive your objectives ....
Stubborn is okay for the most part too because if the person is smart they usually will know the limits of their abilities...
Stupid and stubborn is like somebody behind the wheel of a car unable to correctly steer the damn thing and unwilling to take directions.....
We're screwed if they win....

wow . . . my eyes have been opened . . . mccain has totally earned the right to nuke iran, line the pockets of the rich (well, today, not-as-rich) at the expense of the fast majority of american, and destroy what's left of our civil liberties
what do the wounded vets lying in moldy v.a. facilities get?
dennis @ 130:
dennis dennis dennis....her "speech" may get more airtime at first...but once people start going point by point and removing the bullshit. There will be nothing left.
Hey, cut McCain a break.
His money comes from beer sales in Arizona. That's just about as recession-proof as you can get. As far as he and Cindy are concerned, the economy really IS sound.

Your right. She has no real effective ideas on issues that matter to the country because she has never had to consider them before. She is simply an ideologue and nothing more.

She's the kind of girl you could sit down and have a beer with ... then hit on.
oops! "vast majority"
has anyone seen a comparison of palin and biden on which one of them is best prepared to step in as commander in chief?
No.... not a comparison of obama and palin, but rather
biden and palin....the vice president nominee(s).
While McPain is out on the stump still claiming that the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" top economists are painting an entirely different picture...
I don't care if the old bastard can't type an e-mail, I just want someone at the helm who understands the economy!
Not to mention that "Foreclosure" Phil Gramm is the architect of McPain's economic plan and is largely responsible for the subprime mess and the bank meltdowns that are going on today!

NEW YORK (AP) --
Shares of some top media companies are down at noon:
Disney fell $.29 or .9 percent, to $32.97.
NY Times fell $1.09 or 7.1 percent, to $14.16.
News Corp fell $.45 or 3.1 percent, to $13.95.
Time Warner fell $.32 or 2.2 percent, to $14.25.
Viacom fell $.53 or 2.0 percent, to $26.63.
Above all, the MSM are corporations and they will react to the decline in their stocks today.
dennis @ 130:
Overplayed?....
This is a critical issue...if you speak about just general airtime in the recent past what exactly has been played to death....pigs...lipstick...whose fault is that? Biden?
The economy is going down the crapper and the Dems have been pointing that out for awhile...so what....at least they have a plan that Greenspan has not criticized...

libNmod-
1) I detest people who love economic turmoil. You don't even attempt to hide it, nor do you have any care over who suffers from this because you think whoever it is is not someone you care about anyway. Sorry, but that's wrong and it's ignorant.
2) I never condemned Obama's oratory skills. His oratory skills are unbelievable.
3) You must not have listened to her speech, or if you had, you have no comprehension of what she said, because she sure didn't sound like any Republicans I've listened to lately
4) You never seem to make any case or provide specifics for why you disagree with something.
dennis@130
So now this election is about "ratings" and "audience" Dennis? Just like Grandpa, you keep changing the rules until one suits you. One thing you and your Jim Crow Party refuses to do is apply the same cirteria on Grandpa and his VP (whose entire family should be on Jerry Springer) that you have relentlessly held Obama up to.
Face it Dennis.....you are simply a hypocrite.
dennis @ 130:
No one is showing up to hear Biden? Ah Dennis, you obviously are nowhere near Michigan. I have a friend who was lucky enough to be there and she said only about 25% of those who showed up could get tickets. Many more here were watching locally today. Much more than listened to Palin yesterday that's for sure.
Biden sniping? I suppose this would be called by another name if Palin or McCain said the same.
