Go Home

Joe Biden stepped up and took an aggressive position against McCain on the newest market meltdown. In McCain's world, everything is fundamentally fine.

"John McCain has confessed, and I quote - I want to make sure I get it right - he said, it's easy for me to be in Washington and frankly be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have. Well, he's right. He's right. If all you do is walk the halls of power, all you'll hear is the wants of the powerful. Ladies and gentleman, I believe that's why John McCain could say with a straight face as recently as this morning, and this is a quote, the fundamentals of the economy are strong. That's what John said. He says that we've made great progress economically, in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn't run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well, unless I ran into John McCain."

All hail Conservatism and their destructive policies. Wall Street bears witness to them as Lehman and Merrill rock The Street.

The venerable Lehman Brothers investment bank said early Monday that it will file for bankruptcy, while Bank of America unveiled plans to buy Merrill Lynch -- two pieces of news that profoundly alter the American financial landscape...

And how could I forget the mess that is AIG...

I think now is a great time to bring out Bill Clinton in an ad talking about and comparing the economies of the nineties vs. the past 8 years.
Bring out the Social Security privatization plan of McCain - would YOU want your retirement tied up in the current market????

The 2 largest corporate bankruptcies EVER during the last 8 years.
How many more if we have another 4 years of the same failed policies????
Some of the largest tax-payer funded corporate bail-outs.

Profits are for the wealthy - working people pick up the losses, according to the past 8 years.
Tax cuts are for the wealthy - working people pay more for everything else.
Healthcare affordable for the wealthy - working people and Vets can do with inadequate or without health insurance altogether.
Retirement is for the wealthy - working people can just keep on working.

IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!

The Lehman/Merrill Lynch/AIG thing is what's really insane - it's easy to be out of touch with the regular guy who's hurting, but to be a supposed power broker and be oblivious to the collapse of Wall Street is nuts.

My father and grandfather have seen this time coming since I was a kid. They both recognized the paradigm of the ever expanding economy developed after WW II for the fantasy that it is. It's been amazing how long the rich and powerful have been able to hold it together with behind the scenes manipulation while publicly extolling the invincibility of "free market capitalism." Apparently they've run out of bubble gum and baling wire and the bloated, paper based monstrosity is coming apart at the seams. My hope is it has to die in order for something sustainable and just to take its place.

Hey, a guy can dream so don't harsh my buzz too totally.

Shortly after George W. Bush was elected president, Congress and President Clinton were trying to pass a $384 billion omnibus spending bill, and while the debates swirled around the passage of this bill, Senator Phil Gramm clandestinely slipped a 262-page amendment into the omnibus appropriations bill titled: Commodity Futures Modernization Act. It is likely that few senators read this bill, if any. The essence of the act was the deregulation of derivatives trading (financial instruments whose value changes in response to the changes in underlying variables; the main use of derivatives is to reduce risk for one party). The legislation contained a provision -- lobbied for by Enron, a major campaign contributor to Gramm -- that exempted energy trading from regulatory oversight. Basically, it gave way to the Enron debacle and ushered in the new era of unregulated securities. Interestingly enough, Gramm's wife, Wendy, had been part of the Enron board, and her salary and stock income brought in between $900,000 and $1.8 million to the Gramm household, prior to the passage of the Commodity Futures Modernization Act.

Also known as a "house of cards" ..

They pump up a financial bubble, get all the suckers to put their hard earned cash in, then THEY pull all THEIR cash out, crashing the bubble, stealing everyone else's cash, and then BUY up everything at fire sale prices.

They did it with the Savings and Loan scandal. They did it to American family farms during the Reagan years.

And now they're doing it with the global financial markets.

You have several things right and several things wrong.

Right, it is the economy.

Wrong, we do need more social programs. Universal Health Care so we can compete with the rest of the industrialized world. Better education so we can compete with China and India who graduate more engineers than we do. Those are social programs that we can't do without. They will not cost more than what we have now. The Fat Cats that will not be making the killing that they do now want you to believe otherwise.

Right and Wrong, we need to stop the Military Industrial Complex swindle which has brought us to borrow and spend. We need to stop spending beyond our means.

Right, stop the 'wars'. War is a racket, THAT is the SWINDLE. It is not quite a TRILLION but it is close.

Wrong, stopping foreign aid. Foreign aid IS only a few Billion, which is real money but we are way way down on the list as far as foreign aid goes. It is like the reference to 'earmarks', a drop in the bucket. It is money well spent when tied to something positive. The Japanese who tend to be much more about these things than we are way up on the list of foreign aid contributors. John McCain...An American Hero, or a Weak Traitor?

John McCain tells us about his capture in his acceptance speech.
His interviews while a POW tell us a completely different story. We
know from his campaign speeches and advertisements that he's an
unrepentant liar. Now we find out that he's lied so he can be cast as
a war hero.

John McCain suffered greatly during his five years of captivity in the
"Hanoi Hilton." But his horrific experiences do not entitle him to stretch
the truth about his captivity at the hands of North Vietnamese Communists,
nor to lie and deceive Americans about his bravery and heroism.

From John McCain's 2008 Acceptance Speech:

"Then I found myself falling toward the middle of a small lake in the
city of Hanoi, with two broken arms, a broken leg, and an angry crowd
waiting to greet me."

"I was dumped in a dark cell and left to die. I didn't feel so tough
anymore. When they discovered my father was an admiral, they took
me to a hospital. They couldn't set my bones properly, so they just slapped
a cast on me. "

Interview by French Reporter Francois Chalais, January 1968
pdf file at

"Unconscious, I fell in a lake, some Vietnamese jumped into the water and
pulled me out...They immediately took me to the hospital, in a condition
two inches away from death. A doctor operated on my thigh. Others at the
same time dealt with my arms.

Broadcast to South Vietnam, 2 June 1969
pdf file at

"After I was captured I was taken from a hospital in (?Da Nang) where I
received very good medical treatment. I was given an operation on my leg,
which allowed me to walk again, and a cast for my right arm which was badly
broken in three places. The doctors were very good and they knew a great
deal about the practice of medicine. "

Interview with Dr. Fernando Barral for Cuban media, January 24, 1970
pdf file at

"..I landed in one of the lakes in the center of Hanoi, in the middle of the
water. On landing I tried to get free of my parachute, but could not move,
and did not realize why I could not move my arms or legs, but it was
because of the injuries.”

“From there, they took me to a military hospital in Hanoi, a large hospital
where they operated on me and attended to the multiple fractures.….”

Read the transcripts of propaganda John McCain made for the Communists while
he was a Prisoner of War. Not only is John McCain lying about his capture,
and definitely not a war hero, he is a weakling and a traitor. The first
interviews were done on November 9th, 1967. John McCain was shot down just
14 days earlier on October 26th.

Today, McCain admits that three to four days after he was captured, he
promised the Vietnamese, “I’ll give you military information if you will
take me to the hospital.”

CODE OF CONDUCT: If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means
available.

PARIS - Stock markets tumbled in Europe and Asia on Monday after the double-fisted blow from Wall Street news that Lehman Brothers had filed for bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch would be sold to a large U.S. bank.

London’s FTSE-100 share index was down 3.37 percent, the Paris CAC-40 index lost 4.47 percent and Germany’s DAX 30 index of blue chips sagged 3.18 percent.

Asia’s biggest stock exchanges in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea were closed for holidays, but India’s Sensex index tumbled 3.4 percent, Taiwan’s benchmark indicator plummeted 4.1 percent and Singapore dropped 3.2 percent.

I stopped trying to predict. If the wealthy face of the Republican Party bails on McCain, this could be his Waterloo. However, there are still the evangelicals and they will stick with Sister Sarah until the end.

Top Economist: Americans Should Worry About Bank Deposits if Congress Doesn't Act

Excerpt with video link:

"The banking system is safe and sound," Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson declared at a mid-afternoon press conference Monday, seeking to ameliorate such concerns.

"Nothing is more important than the stability and orderliness of our financial markets [and] regulators remain vigilant," Paulson continued. "We're working through a difficult period in our financial markets right now as we work of some of the past excesses, but the American people can remain confident in the soundness and resilience of our financial system."

But Americans are justified to be worried, says Nouriel Roubini, of NYU's Stern School and RGE Monitor, who notes there is already a "slow-motion run on retail banks" occurring nationwide.

That "run" could accelerate as people realize the FDIC fund has about $50 billion to "insure" about $1 trillion in assets at the nation's financial institutions, says Roubini. "They're going to run out of money" unless Congress acts soon to recapitalize the FDIC.

In addition, the recent spike in number of banks on the FDIC's "troubled list" is only through June, meaning even that inflated number understates the problem.

The intent here isn't to add to people's anxieties, but Roubini is one of the few market watchers to correctly predict the severity of this ongoing credit crisis. If nothing else, he says people with accounts exceeding $100,000 in value should spread their money - and the risk - among different firms.

She's out neo-cons Cheney for chrissakes! Moderate Democrat my ass.
I gotta admit...your becoming funnier as you become more and more desperate.
Ah I LOVE THIS!

libNmod-

1) I detest people who love economic turmoil. You don't even attempt to hide it, nor do you have any care over who suffers from this because you think whoever it is is not someone you care about anyway. Sorry, but that's wrong and it's ignorant.

2) I never condemned Obama's oratory skills. His oratory skills are unbelievable.

3) You must not have listened to her speech, or if you had, you have no comprehension of what she said, because she sure didn't sound like any Republicans I've listened to lately

4) You never seem to make any case or provide specifics for why you disagree with something.

So now this election is about "ratings" and "audience" Dennis? Just like Grandpa, you keep changing the rules until one suits you. One thing you and your Jim Crow Party refuses to do is apply the same cirteria on Grandpa and his VP (whose entire family should be on Jerry Springer) that you have relentlessly held Obama up to.
Face it Dennis.....you are simply a hypocrite.

A very empty speech.....I'm surprised you were so easily taken by it Dennis.

Left², I don't have the heart to tell you this, but no one is showing up to hear Biden speak. If you thought there was substance in that clip then I've got a jet airplane to sell you that I couldn't on Ebay. Biden only did some of the old sniping that's been around for a couple weeks, pausing and emphasizing the 'divorced' word, deviously clipping a quote McCain made today about the economy, and then calling him out of touch. He knows that gets on the tube tonight, because as cheap as those soundbites were, it's the only way he gets TV exposure.

Let's see tonight which speech gets the most airtime; which one is talked about for substance and which one is noted for the usual sniping. Even this golden opportunity of a major investment bank failure, for which Democrats can't contain their glee over, is likely to be yet another hand overplayed by Team Obama.

No one is showing up to hear Biden? Ah Dennis, you obviously are nowhere near Michigan. I have a friend who was lucky enough to be there and she said only about 25% of those who showed up could get tickets. Many more here were watching locally today. Much more than listened to Palin yesterday that's for sure.

Biden sniping? I suppose this would be called by another name if Palin or McCain said the same.
