Biden: McCain "dangerously wrong" on foreign policy
Joe Biden gave a speech today in Cincinnati where he ripped into the failed Bush/McCain foreign policy, and laid out clearly the different approach he and Obama would take to keep us safe and regain our good standing in the world.
This week, John talked about the judgment required to be Commander in Chief. He’s right: nothing is more important than judgment. But time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain’s judgment was wrong.
John is more than wrong -- he is dangerously wrong. On a question so basic, so fundamental, so critical to our nation’s security, we can’t afford a Commander-in Chief so divorced from reality and from America’s most basic national interests.
Full transcript below the fold:
Later this week, Barack Obama and John McCain will come together to debate a president’s most important responsibility: how to keep Americans safe and America secure. It will be their first presidential debate – but in many ways it’s a debate we’ve been having as a nation for the past eight years. And the outcome of that debate has already been decided. Now, just as most Americans believe we are on the wrong track at home, so too have they come to the conclusion that we’ve been heading in the wrong direction abroad.
Our country is less secure and more isolated than it has been at any time in recent history. This administration has dug America into a very deep hole around the world at a time our leadership is needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century.“A central question for this election is which candidate will keep digging that hole…and which candidate will dig us out of that hole – indeed which candidate has the judgment and the vision to renew the promise of America in the world. It won’t surprise you who I believe that candidate is: Barack Obama. But it is equally clear who that candidate is not: John McCain.
… the policies he would pursue as president would be wrong for America – nowhere more so than with our security and standing in the world.
This week, John talked about the judgment required to be Commander in Chief. He’s right: nothing is more important than judgment. But time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain’s judgment was wrong. Right after the terrorists attacked us on 9-11, John responded by urging that we consider attacking countries other than Afghanistan, including Iraq, Iran and Syria. In the run up to the war in Iraq, John insisted that we would be greeted as liberators… that we didn’t need a lot of troops… that victory was imminent. Then, he said he wasn’t worried about Afghanistan… that we would “muddle through”… and he declared Afghanistan to be “a remarkable success. In John’s judgment, there is nothing to talk about with Tehran. And he has one idea for dealing with Russia: kick it out of the Group of Eight nations.
In John’s judgment, it is not the federal government’s responsibility to protect us here at home. He voted again and again against fully funding cops and firefighters… against interoperable communications so that our first responders can talk to each other… against screening more cargo on planes and ships… against better security for our tunnels, trains, ports and chemical plants. It is John’s judgment that six years into the war in Iraq, we should keep spending $10 billion a month… indefinitely… at a time Iraq is running an $80 billion surplus.
And John McCain continues to insist, against all the evidence and all the facts, that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism… and not the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan where the people who actually attacked us on 9-11 reside and are regrouping.
John is more than wrong -- he is dangerously wrong. On a question so basic, so fundamental, so critical to our nation’s security, we can’t afford a Commander-in Chief so divorced from reality and from America’s most basic national interests.
Time and again, Barack Obama has demonstrated the judgment we need in our next president… and the vision to see over the horizon.
Seven years ago, Barack Obama opposed one of the most disastrous decisions in the history of American foreign policy: the diversion of our military might, our resources and focus from Afghanistan to Iraq. He was profoundly right. Now, he is right again: Barack Obama will end the war in Iraq responsibly. He will be as careful getting out as George Bush and John McCain were careless getting in. He knows we should not keep spending $10 billion a month indefinitely while the Iraqis are running a $79 billion surplus – which is why he will start to shift responsibility to the Iraqis…bring our combat brigades home over a period of 16 months… lead a diplomatic surge with the world’s great powers and Iraq’s neighbors to press for a political power sharing agreement… and keep a residual force in Iraq to destroy any remaining terrorists, train Iraqis and protect our personnel.
Barack Obama understands what John McCain does not: the next President must be more than the Commander-in-Chief for Iraq. He must be Commander-in-Chief for America’s security around the world.
Mark my words: if, God forbid, there is another major attack on America, it will not come from Iraq. It will almost certainly come from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border – where the Bush/McCain approach let down our guard and let our enemies off the hook.
And unlike John McCain – who opposed Barack Obama’s call to take out the high-level terrorist targets in Pakistan and called it “bombing our ally” – we will not tolerate a terrorist sanctuary in Pakistan. If Pakistan cannot or will not act, we will take out high-level terrorist targets like bin Laden if we have them in our sights.
Barack Obama has been clear: no country poses a greater security challenge to the United States, Israel and our allies than Iran. Under the policies George Bush has pursued and John McCain would continue, Iran, not freedom, has been on the march. Iran is much closer to the bomb; its influence in Iraq is expanding; its terrorist proxy Hezbollah is ascendant in Lebanon; its ally, Hamas controls Gaza and launches rockets at Israel. Beyond bluster, what would John McCain actually do about these dangers? He doesn’t say.
The worst nightmare for a regime that thrives on isolation and tension is an America ready, willing and able to engage. Since when has talking removed the word “no” from our vocabulary? It’s amazing how little faith John McCain has in himself and in America.
So ask yourself: based on the judgments they have made and the policies they have proposed, which candidate is more likely as president to end the war in Iraq responsibly… to focus America’s full might on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan… to unite our allies in dealing effectively with Iran and Russia…to renew the promise of America in the world? The answer is clear.
There’s a short list of the forces shaping the 21st Century. No one country can control these forces, but more than any other country, we have an ability to affect them – if we use the totality of our strength. That means maintaining the finest fighting force in the world – not pushing it to the breaking point… rebuilding our alliances, partnerships and international institutions – not disparaging them… strengthening our diplomacy -- not disdaining it… and using our economic might, not putting it in jeopardy.
Barack Obama understands that strength and wisdom go hand in hand… that the power of our example is as important and the example of our power… and that its only leadership when others join us in the struggle for freedom, security, prosperity, and progress. Barack Obama will keep our citizens safe. He will keep our country secure. And he will answer the yearning, at home and around the world, for an American foreign policy that is once again as good and strong as the American people.

Both campaigns want to increase the size of the military. Is the pot calling the kettle black?
Both campaigns kowtow to AIPAC. Return to the 1967 borders!
The only politicians criticizing Isreali politicians are Israeli. Are we a puppet state?
McCain Even Confused the Shia with Chia Pets

Come on,
All you need to do is sing along:
Bomb, bomb, bomb....... bomb, bomb Iran

Isn't that FUCKING funny???
Watch the Palin pastor laying his hands on her for a better laugh.
Again,
divine intervention happening here.
THIS time it will be the BETTER candidate elected.
Peace.
Laura Bush says of course palin lacks foreign affairs

Gee why didn't anyone else think of that. If they did that everyone could live happily ever after. Such an amazingly simple solution to one of the most complex geopolitical situations in human history. You should get a Nobel prize.
Since McCain hasn't been seen to be rigorously preparing for the debate which is the norm for all debates, I have to assume that he's been planning on ducking the debate for quite a while which also means he knows he's going to get his clock cleaned. If McCain can't face up to Obama, how's he going to deal with Putin—oh, that's right, McCain's foreign policy doesn't involve talking to anyone who is not a good friend—which is rather like Sarah Palin's interview policy.
Sarah Palin speaks in tongues, so that's got to be a big plus in foreign relations.

want to tell me how peace broke out after the israeli's unilaterally pulled out of gaza?

Its also the UN's solution to the problem too.
Quick C&L post the Letterman on McCains not showing up on his show from today on YouTube.
On foreign policy, McCain's chief foreign policy adviser is Randy Scheunemann of the Project for The New America Century (PNAC), the think tank that Bush tapped to lead his foreign policy. So, McCain apparently endorses PNAC's goal of "benevolent global hegemony", which McCain himself coins "Rouge State Rollback". And he has promised more wars.
So, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck ... it's a duck. You can even put lipstick on that duck, and it's still a duck.

There's still time, but just barely. While the politicians take a time out from campaigning, there is no time out for us. Exhort people you know to get out and vote.
Forget the latest polls, polls are fickle. The only poll that counts is on Nov 4th.

Scroll down. We have it.
Palin's ship hit a huge iceberg named Katie Couric tonight with no lifeboat in sight.
Maybe the first dude will come and fish her out of the ocean in his Piper Cub and they can shoot some polar bears on the way home.
I'll bet Sarah will name each one Katie before she pulls the trigger.
i hate to say it, but now is the time for the democrats to strike. kick em while they're down.
That was a powerful speech.

It is one element of the many solutions proposed by the U.N. and it is contingent on security guarantees for Israel"s continued existence. The right to exist within those borders is also currently denied by both Hamas and Hezbollah and their numerous subtribes. It's quite a bit more complex than black and white.
Biden sounds awfully fear-mongering in parts... Although maybe it's a tactic to jump on recent events before the right wingers do and grab votes from scared voters.
Also, since when is justice about revenge?
"we should kill bin laden"?
Isn't capture a priority, as always? A fair trial?
Peter G @ 18:
Ahh, the famous "right to exist" always makes me chuckle.
Fox is reporting an internet rumor that Biden will withdraw as VP after the debate. Distraction, distraction, distraction.

McPale's Navy @ 15:
Are you kidding? Palin's sole purpose is to rally the Republican base (a.k.a. idiots). They already convinced themselves that she actually knew the Bush Doctrine better than Charles Gibson and that's why she didn't answer it. (true story. check right wing blogs). They'll spin this to whatever they need to believe. They're the most fact-immune group of voters in the nation. All they care about is a firm handshake and a sunburned neck.
You know, I really wanted to like this speech, and it had its moments. But two things drove me crazy - the constant repetition of "Ladies and Gentlemen" or "Folks," which seriously weakened his presentation and was far too reminiscent of McCain's continual refrain of "My friends", and the fact that Biden repeated the canard that Russia invaded Georgia without provocation - when it was Georgia that started bombing south Ossetia's capital, for god's sake (no doubt with Rove and Cheney cheering Saakashvili on).
biden's the only one with any fuckin balls. that motherfucker gets fired up baby! heh
With all due respect, I think we need to get the HELL out of Iraq NOW and DO NOT leave any military there. We had NO RIGHT to invade to begin with. The reason we were attacked on 9-11 has EVERYTHING to do with the hundreds of thousands who died as a DIRECT RESULT of our embargo on Iraq that kept medicines out of that nation. Thousands and thousands of kids died due to lack of medical care because of the embargo put in place by Clinton (the best republican president we have ever had).
Just getting the last of the potatoes out of the garden and I came inside and heard Biden's speech. It was so great. I mean that in the sense that "Wow what a smart, reasonable, and articulate American". Simple as that.
Then, despite my attempt to avoid it, I heard Bush speak. What a pale, wooden, fearmongering bastard. He's the exact opposite of Biden. His whole thing is a fear infomecial. Sad.
One thing I'm getting from all this is that somehow the American people have been woken up. The fleece is being lifted from your eyes. Well not C&L eyes but I mean the folks that are saying "Holy shit a trillion bucks". Perhaps the crooks have revealed themselves in this last grasp at your tax dollars.
Lord help those neocon bastards if the American people do wake up.
Biden is going to tear McSain a new ass hole. Unlike Obama, he has been around long enough to know where all the bodies are buried in the McSain camp and I believe he is going to unleash on the old man.
Hearing Biden talk about how we have not been attacked since 9/11, am I the only person that saw the news about the attack on our embassy in Yemen? The right wing used the attacks on our embassies in Africa as evidence that Democrats were too soft of terrorists. How in the f*ck is this attack different? The GOP promised we would not be attacked as long as they were in power, and along with all the other lies, now this one is here as well. Our embassy, like all other embassies, is sovereign soil. We HAVE been attacked again.
Yeh, kill more Afghans/Pashtuns and Pakistani's, that'll stop terrorism,..... hmmm yeh, ok, whatever .
Meet the new boss......
Joe "I'm a Zionist" Biden. An establishment war pig and one of the most ardent supporters of the neocon foreign policy agenda.
"Change we need."
If nothing else, this site is always good for a chuckle.
Biden needs to make an intentianal blunder/ One that is good enough to get his name into the news cycle but silly enough to be nothing in the long run.
Nice speech, but conspicuously absent from the speech, and probably thinking, is any mention of the greatest threat to this nation, the threat that trumps all others combined: the systematic and deliberate destruction of our constitutionally granted rights and liberties, a process of destruction that has been methodically implemented in favor of consolidating the establishment of a tyrannical police state.
I live in a battleground state, and if Obama expects my vote on election day, he needs to start addressing this issue in a substantive and explicit manner. He needs to acknowledge, without equivocation that we ware in deep doo-doo, and tell me just exactly what he's going to do to fix it. Thus far, his silence is deafening, and his voting record extremely disappointing. He's running out of time to woo me.
