Letterman Brutalizes John McCain For Cancellations *UPDATED With Video
By Logan Murphy Tuesday Sep 23, 2008 5:39pm
Politico: (h/t Scarce for video)
Per Drudge, some brutal late night shots at McCain, who cancelled on Letterman tonight:
David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.
Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"
"He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put
in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?""What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!" Read on...
In what can only be described as the most desperate political move in modern presidential campaign history, John McCain is proving that he is wholly unfit to lead our country. I hope David Letterman is not the only one with a national stage to speak the truth about this. McCain is scared out of his mind and this hoax only solidifies the point. The McCain/Palin ticket is plummeting in the polls, the Davis/Freddie Mac scandal is reaching a fever pitch, they're trying to keep Palin locked in a bubble and more and more Republicans are becoming furious with the way this sham of a campaign is being run. Barack Obama needs to stand firm and not give in!

GREAT JOB DAVE !!!! Kick his ass !!! This is how leaders act, huh? Wait Mommy!! Mommy! Mommy please, TIME OUT Mommy!
Truth Bombs.
We need more of them.
Great moment in Presidential Time Out's...
Mr. McCain, Eat Mor Chiken.
I’ll have the pulled pork with a side of lipstick.
I loved Barney Frank’s take on the McCain stunt, say that McCain wanted to “parachute in at the last minute and take credit for a solution, after all the work has been done without his involvement.”
Thanks, but no thanks.
Leno soft balls the America destroying Republicans. Letterman nails them. That's why I watch Letterman and never watch Leno.
I agree with McCain. Suspending his campaign is best for the country.
Let's not forget that the National Enquirer dropped a Palin 'adultery' bomb today as well. After Gary Hart and John Edwards we can't take the NE for granted.
http://www.nationalenquirer.com/national_enquirer_world_exclusive_sarah_...
This is a political stunt by McCain. He will soon be saying, "See, Obama is more interested in being President then dealing with the concerns of the American people." This is nothing more than a political ploy that I hope back fires. Good for Letterman for calling him on it!
Letterman is brilliant.
Now, they are trying to dump the VP debate.
I guess palin is ignorant and this crisis is not serious with all this political stunt bs.
I heard on MSNBC that KO is replacing McSHAME on Letterman. They sounded serious. If KO is on, and as a Replacement for McSHAME, it could get brutal; or as I like to think, Brutally Funny!
Ruthless People @ 5:
Bingo and bravo!
Can't stand the whiny, puerile, giggling, jut-jawed Leno, with his goddamn lapel flag. Sheesh, even Pat Sajak quit wearing his.
Leno is awful. Letterman is still the late-night king.
Chill @ 7:
I think the NE is really non-partisan. All they care about is titillation and scandal...
Ruthless People @ 5:
Ditto. Leno is a zero. And his band sux.
MSM is actually saying how heroic McCain is for cancelling. Really? I call it cowardice.
I'm watching Palin's interview with Katie Couric. Why do I insist on punishing myself?
Chill @ 7:
Let's hope this spreads like wildfire, just like the Edwards escapade.
The NE is actually earning its journalistic chops ...
McCain-Palin: UNFIT to Serve
Who here is a boxing fan?
Who here has seen When We Were Kings, the documentary of the Ali-Foreman Rumble in the Jungle? If you have seen it, you probably won't ever forget it.
I believe we are beginning to see the part where Ali, I mean Obama, opens up the final can of whoop-ass on McCain. I don't see McCain recovering from the cumulative effect of this rope-a-dope. It's just more and more on more and more, the slow ugly bleed.
Mind you, I am going to campaign in VA for Obama like we're a half point behind there. But I am beginning to smell a lot of blood. Is it going to be a TKO (like McCain walking out of debates, etc.) or a KO (with McCain effectively unconscious)?
Ali bum-ba-ye! Obama bum-ba-ye!!
Chill @ 7:
Bust her out. Let the Truth be Told.
Obama handled this well this morning but...how can he force McCain to debate on Friday if McCain doesn't want to?
remember, we are bailing out our sino-overlords!!
Bruce/Crablaw @ 19:
Awesome.. Hell yeah I've seen that. Sounds good to me.
Hey wait! Dave is from Indiana right? Maybe he could go do some campaigning there for Obama. Pleeeze Dave?
I was going to say that I wonder if CBS was going to let Letterman's entirely justifiable statement onto the air tonight, but I've just realized that the news of his remarks has already spread so quickly that the Eye is in huge trouble if it doesn't let Letterman's remarks air.

Laura Bush agrees - Palin is NOT qualified!
Laura Bush: Palin lacks foreign policy experience
WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush says Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lacks sufficient foreign policy experience but is a very quick study.
In an interview Wednesday with CNN, the first lady remarked that it's fortunate that Republican presidential nominee John McCain has foreign policy experience himself.

Someone has to guard the Alaskan border from the Russians, in this time of need.
It's time for anyone who has a brain to start calling things how they are: McCain and Palin are woefully unfit to serve. Speak up people!

Lesson #1: Don't piss-off Letterman.
Lesson #2: Always take your meds.
barkleyg @ 11:
Yup, it's true!!! CAN'T WAIT!! :)
Anonymous Hussein @ 21:
The McCain campaign will beat Obama over the head with "putting winning the Presidency first, instead of Country, like I'm doing." You just watch.
Chill @ 7:
Its being known and doing the rounds for a couple of weeks, we were just waiting for the NE to officially release their story.
Having followed and watched and read about this story all day, I just watched NBC Nightly News whitewash the whole thing and make it appear that McCain was doing the right thing! Obama's wonderful, thoughtful, cutting response was edited down to literally 15 seconds. Really shameful. And the reporter claimed the Obama & McCain did NOT talk at 8:30 this morning, contradicting Obama. Anyone getting their news from that would come away with the feeling that McCain was concerned, Obama - maybe not so much.
This has been said many times before. How someone runs their campaign is a window how they intend to govern.
Need I say more?
Hell, Letterman is just plain funnier than Leno, always has been.
Maybe they can get Mittens to stand in. He can explain why we need to pay off bad debt with more bad debt in order to keep the economy in fine shape.
I love you David Letterman. You rock.
This is what all the GOP pussies do. Remember Giuliani trying to suspend the NYC Mayoral election because of 911? Anyone who believes any of these GOP pusiies is tough is delusional. None of them even had the guts to serve their country!!!
OOOPS. Except Grandpa McCain. He must have forgotten he was in the military. Oh yeah, he was a failure at that, too.
GOP. Grand Old Pussies
Plummeting in the polls, eh, I think this was a very clever move. Don't forget about that AFL-CEO chap at the RNC. Unionists seem to be quiet the racists as things pan out.
To slightly paraphrase Lincoln:
If you're not going to use Bill Clinton, may I borrow David Letterman?

Leno looks like the cartoon figure in 'American Dad', but with a puny whiny voice.
King Dave, indeed!
Devastatingly accurate.

Chill @ 7:
Well, well, well, that would explain why McCain dropped his Mass Distraction bomb today.

Yup and owns a Indy racing team.
I have a great play for obama regarding mccain’s play to “suspend the presidential debates to save the economy;
“John mccain only just last week was telling everyone the fundamentals of this economy are fine, if he had paid attention then when he should have would be more prepared now that we have to put our irons in the fire to solve this problem, he needs to demonstrate he can do more then one thing at a time if he intends on running this country
a case in point, the University of Mississippi and those associated with the debate will lose millions of dollars in revenue if the debate were cancelled, at this moment, the LAST thing we need to do is cause more economic loss in this crisis”
man, that would be good, obama can use it if he comes by to read my post
Anonymous Hussein @ 21:
He doesn't have to.....all he has to do is show up as scheduled and let the rest speak for itself. There is absolutely no reason why the two candidates cannot work on this situation in D.C., then hop a jet and have a debate about SUBJECT MATTER THAT SHOULD ALREADY BE KNOWN like it's the back of their hand.

Letterman and the Enquirer? It's a sad, sad day for the McCain campaign. I bet McCain is beginning to have regrets he didn't pick Romney as his running mate, Certainly, ol' Mitt might have been a bigger help to McCain in this crisis than Mooseburger.
Sarah Palin,
not fit to be VP of America,
not fit to be Governor of Alaska,
not fit to be mayor of a rinky dink town.
She needs to retire and rethink her life, go take some civics, ethics and morality classes.
McPalin wants to debate on the date of the VP debate and have the VP debate delayed till whenever.
How convenient. What a fucktard.
Shoeless @ 56:
Its a puzzling conundrum, which one is the bigger albatross, WcCain or S'talin.
99% of most "luminaries" in various fields of money making scanning the spectrum from politics to entertainment try to act down to earth but fail miserably.
Unlike Dave they have a deeply rooted addiction to rubbing their fame and fortune (and unwanted advise) in your face.
Kudos to Letterman. I'm glad he did it.
Someone on air needs to tell it like it is and do it in spades.
maybe shutting up is the best thing for mccain as the public speaking thing isn't working out too well.
Oh, if Dave could just get Palin on his show....
Dave was the man when I was in college and 25 years later he's still got it.
So, if we have crisis in Iran, a failing economy, North Korea back on the Nuke train, a war in Iraq, and failure in Afghanistan, what is McCain gonna do. Ask Wall Street to take a month off, call a cease fire in Iraq, tell North Korea we'll get back to you because he has to concentrate on Iran right now? Wow, what a weak candidate they have.
And even a weaker VP candidate. She's forbidden to speak to the media!!!! Bullshit!!! Just sit there and look cute. How degrading to women.
Any bitter Clinton voter who's voting McCain because of Palin needs to turn in their voter registration card. Any conservative voting for McCain just because he uses the label of Republican needs to turn in their brain.
This should be one of the easiest elections in modern history and it's close? Someone help me figure this out.
Letterman rocks
Don't think the Enquirer story has anything to do with it. But Palin's interview with Couric goes about as stupidly as you knew it would.
Still, there's something wrong with McCain. Physically, I mean. He sounds downed-out half the time and juiced the other half.
Watch those meds, showboating John.
the national enquirer should put more resources on todd palin. there's more gold there.
The combined wealth of the richest 400 individuals is $400 billion more than the entire discretionary spending budget for the federal government. It is more than $300 billion larger than the combined 2008 outlay for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It is more than 15 times the combined appropriations for education and highways and mass transit.
“In this, the 27th edition of the list,” Forbes glumly notes, “the assembled net worth of America’s wealthiest rose by $30 billion—only 2%—to $1.57 trillion.”
Palin is history. Who was the "decider guy" that picked her anyway?
BigIslandDave @ 17:
Considering that "parties in the know" apparently passed lie detector tests, it won't be long before The New York Times makes this story "all the news that's fit to print" because, if true, it makes Palin and all her "I've been SAVED!!! by a Kenyan witch hunter!" right-wing wacko "posing" show us all what she really is.
Just a pretty poseur.
And of course it becomes crystal clear what it makes John McCain.
An incompetent, irresponsible un-American opportunist who put his personal ambition for power ahead of ALL the important interests of the American people.

don't fret too much -- anyone who was watching cbs got a load of palin talking to katie couric. couric looked really irritated that she had to do this mock interview, and palin was clearly unable to answer even the simplest questions with anything other than memorized campaign rhetoric. when couric asked her for an example of anything mccain had done in his 26 years in washington, palin told her she'd have to get back to her on that.

The ONLY reason they're even pretending to support him is to keep their own asses out of jail.
The way he looks lately, I would not be a bit surprised if he had a stroke in his first year in office. What a patriotic thing to do to the country.... have a idiot dictator in training, waiting in the wings, just so he can achieve his dream of being more important than anyone else.

MSM has 2/3 no suspension.
at the very least two thirds of the country dont want the debates and unspokenly the election suspended.
I think people have more than an inkling of what happens when a dictatorship leaning regime is give the chance to suspend elections.
The Repubs thought that blood and guts McCain would bring a strong national security. Now that the primary skill that is needed is fiscal leadership, perhaps Romney would have been the better choice. I could give you between 9 and 11 reasons why Giuliani would have been a better VP choice than Palin, but l'll leave it at - that New York City is probably economically larger than Alaska.
So, we have seen a VP nominee hiding from the press, and now the Presidential nominee is in seclusion. As far as Obama is concerned, he said he's ready to debate Friday night - apparently, he can do more than one thing at a time, unlike McCain.

As I understand it, the debate is not canceled. The decision will be McCain's whether he wishes to attend or not. One of his flunkies boasted that McCain will attend Friday's debate, all of the other debates and any townhall meeting Obama is up for. Again with the townhall meetings. Let it go.
McCain canceled Letterman but not Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in New York. He's still speaking there. http://www.clintonfoundation.org/news/news-media/press-release-president... He is giving the introductory speech.
Speaking of Letterman, Chris Rock did a nice job on Bill Clinton's lukewarm bs last night too. Watch it if you can. I believe there is a video on Alternet.

And the View.
Here's the end of Maureen Dowd's column: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/opinion/24dowd.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
. . . . And Governor Palin spends so much time ostracizing reporters who might quiz her on NATO or the liquidity crunch that her press strategy is beginning to smack of Putin’s — but less lethal.
Even if she blows off the First Amendment — and lets McCain’s Rove, Steve Schmidt, demonize the press even though she disdains women politicians who whine — Bill Clinton is still a fan.
Besides talking about what a great man John McCain is on “The View” and “David Letterman,” Bill praised Palin at his Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York and will receive her there on Thursday.
“I come from Arkansas. I get why she is hot out there,” he said authoritatively, adding: “People look at her, and they say, ‘All those kids. Something that happens in everybody’s family. I’m glad she loves her daughter and she’s not ashamed of her. Glad that girl’s going around with her boyfriend. Glad they’re going to get married.’ ” He said voters would think: “I like that little Down syndrome kid. One of them lives down the street. They’re wonderful. ... And I like the idea that this guy does those long-distance races. Stayed in the race for 500 miles with a broken arm. My kind of guy.”
On “The View,” he said he understood that some women might vote for Palin on the basis of gender, even if it was against their economic interest.
“You can’t tell someone else that the ground on which they make their voting decision is irrational,” he said primly.
Well, actually you could, if you weren’t still sulking and plotting for 2012.

With the current record for missed votes in the Senate (64.1%, compared to Obama's 45.9% during the 110th Congress, per WaPo ), does McCain even remember what to do when he get's there...!?!
OOps,
Meant, beautiful weather for that speech.
Sorry, this McCain meltdown is giving me a "tingle up my leg".
Peace.
There are 3 possible reasons for McCain/Palin's problems (well, really, lots more but no space for all):
1. John really is looney tunes; thinks his positions are coherent and thought Palin was
a "reall winner;"
2. Eventually we'll discover that the Repugs "allowed" McCain to be their candidate this year because they knew the economy was going to tank, and the wars were not going to get better, and the rest of ME-Asia was going to bubble into trouble, and they're happy to let the Dems take on the problems and the blame. Some Rep operative picked Sarah for comic relief.
3. Cheney/Bush et al arranged for John to have some fun running for President, 'cause
they know they're not really leaving-----Surprise!

John McWATB. Unfit for President.
Will the stress from this flame-out of his campaign be enough to cause him to collapse? Is this the way they get some "champion of the right" to run for president without having to face the long grind and scrutiny of a public campaign? With these clowns I guess anything is possible. Oh yeah, and I'd love to get this clip of Letterman. I went TV-free this year and other than the occasional delay in getting a clip like this I don't miss it one bit.

First, like Obama says, a President needs to be able to do more than one thing at a time. If McCain chickens out of this Friday's debate, well, then that's one less debate. Isn't there a couple more? If Palin chickens out next Thursday, then she'll be the first unvetted VP candidate in modern times. Maybe she stayed back in her Vice President classes.

Naw. That Enquirer stuff was amusing early on, but there are so many more genuine, huge problems for Palin that it would be a distraction to pay attention to a tawdry ten-year old fling. If anything it will just get her some sympathy. Lets pay attention to the secrecy, abuses of power, inability to express a coherent thought, lies, etc.
If McCain has suspended his campaign, why did he do an interview with Couric? Isn't that called campaigning? Or are we supposed to believe the interview was with "concerned citizen" Senator John McCain, and not "presidential candidate" John McCain?
The only "fantasy world" is the one Bush and the neo-cons imagine we live in. Things not going their way? Wait for or create a disaster and ram something disgusting down the throats of the fearful masses. Rinse, lather, repeat ad nauseum. Hollywood can't keep up with the demented horror this adminstration and its cronies keep dishing out. Terrorism, torture, pre-emptive wars, botched responses to natural disasters, economic ruin. What's next? Nuclear war with Russia or maybe just the suspension of the entire constitution?

I must be from Mayberry. I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you mean I'm backward, then maybe I am a little. I do love my freedom that my dad and a lot of other bold Americans helped insure up to this point in my life. I worry that Obama may be more for himself than our country. Nevertheless, if he wins, and I hope he doesn't, then he will be my president and I will stand by him and support him. I don't think I could say the same about you and the others on this forum if the tables turned for McCain.
Anyone read the latest Rolling Stone? Letterman cuts loose on O'Reilly and Limbaugh, and endorses a political candidate (not running for Pres, but nonetheless).

You're the one who sounds angry. Maybe you should run.
Way to go Dave! It's staggering to think there are actually people in this country who would still vote for a palin/mccain ticket. They've become a laughingstock.
I love the fact that the media love affair with the far right is finally over. Can we get some truth and healing now? Finally?
To steal a line from Lennox commercials a few years back: "Atta boy,Dave".
Wow, all these guys spending money like it's water, now scuffling around like clowns.
Clown Show..This whole entire state of affairs, the entire thing I see, the big picture, all the above. Clowns

What? Do you think you're the only one who loves Freedom? Do you think your family is the only family to sacrifice for freedom? You've been losing your Freedoms for almost 8 years. And you don't even realize it.
What exactly do you mean by losing your Freedoms under Obama?
As for McCain and will I support him if he's elected. ABSOLUTELY NOT!
He's going to be another Boosh 3rd term. And if he dies in office, Palin gets to finish his term and run for 2 more.
Have you thought about that?
How can anyone be more for themselves than this admin? Have you noticed the price of gas?
Have you noticed the unemployment rate? And it's climbing.
Have you noticed that this "WAR" in Iraq was/is illegal?
Have you noticed this current economy crisis?
Even if Obama gets elected, he's fucked. It's a no win situation for him. But I'd rather have the smart guy than the guy who finished at the bottom of his class.
You have a nice evening. And you know what they say? America, Love it or Leave it!
You really don't want to go down this road with me. I have tons more.

Yeah, she/he is pissed off. And they have a right to be pissed off. Anyone who isn't pissed off isn't paying attention.
On second thought, nevermind. I don't have the energy to explain it all too you.
I'll hand you off to someone else who's willing to educate you.
Good night folks, Be well.
I didn't vote for Bush, I'm not discussing Bush, so your little madman rant doesn't mean shit to me. This term is almost over let's talk about the new guys. Keep your cool, make sense, and we can move on.
Keeping Quiet?
September 24, 2008
A McCain-Palin ad claims Obama has been "mum" on the economic crisis. That's false.
Summary
A new McCain-Palin ad says that "McCain and his congressional allies led" on the financial crisis while Obama was "mum." That's simply not true:
* Obama has in fact made several statements about the crisis on Wall Street in recent days, delivering his most specific remarks on how government regulations should be changed on Sept. 22, a day before this ad was released.
* McCain gave his most detailed speech on a response to the crisis on Sept. 19, a few days before Obama did. Obama, however, had been pushing for what he called a “21st century regulatory system” back in March.
* The "mum" quote is from a Sept. 20 Washington Times story, which went on to say Obama did "not to divulge details of his recovery plan ... fearing it would stir Wall Street jitters." The ad falsely says that Obama stayed quiet because "no one knows what to do."
* The ad ends by saying: "More taxes. No leadership. A risk your family can’t afford." Actually, most "families" would pay less taxes under Obama's tax plan. An independent analysis shows 95.5 percent of households with children would get a tax cut under his tax proposals.
