Go Home

Dodd, Frank and others on CNN, MSNBC and FOX... Frank said there really was no reason to go to the White House, but he's glad to stop by. Obama and McCain will meet with Bush at the White House. McCain is making a play to try and say he forced this I guess...It's not like he's done anything on this subject...

The Hill:

Republican presidential nominee John McCain has not introduced any banking or housing bills in the 110th Congress, while Democratic rival Barack Obama has proposed five.

Both candidates are traveling to Washington on Thursday to meet with President Bush and congressional leaders to build support for a massive rescue plan for the nation's ailing economy.

Four minutes into it, Bush basically blamed the homeowners/borrowers.

No, it was the relaxed lending policies that allowed them to offer bad loans.

These bad loans were sold as bad investments.

But, no one cared, because everyone was making billions!

NO to the fraud. NO to the bailout!

All this drama over McCain suspending his part in his own campaign has effectively drawn attention away from Palin's fiasco interview with Katie Couric.

Meredith Viera played some of the Letterman Show references to McCain and ended with "I'm not touching this one."

Again, Obama seems to be able to see through the clutter and to get it right:

1. Those actively engaged in attempting to resolve this first step in calming the markets really didn't need the fly-in expertise of either candidate at this point. They certainly didn't need Mr. "I really don't understand economics" McCain.

2. If they had what they believed was important input or wanted their views known, they do have access to phones; cellular, 3G and land.

3. Presidents had better be able to handle more than one crisis at a time since they don't respond well to "Time out! I'm still reading My Pet Goat."

4. Most of the serious new policies and laws to regulate, oversee, and manage the various elements of our complex financial system will be overseen by the next President - so let's make sure we completing the campaigns properly.

Judgement trumps 26 years of wasted experience - again!

People pay too much attention to the Dow. The Dow is only 30 companies. AIG was removed from the Dow and replaced with Kraft.

The Nasdaq had a slight increase yesterday, almost breakeven, while the Dow fell.
The S&P 500 (500 companies, not a measily 30) also had a slight increase yesterday.

I'm of two minds on this whole stinkin mess...one part of me says to hell with wall street, the crooks-ass CEO's, McBain, Gramm, and every other criminal SOB responsible for this shit, and just let 'em suffer.
America could use a kick in the ass to remind us where we're from, what we've been through, and what we could be again.
Then the other side, is like, damn that would totally suck for a loooong time before it got better, and also, it would give this fascist govt. a reason to declare martial law.

Not really. Whatever companies are headed down because of toxic investments still have lots of good salable assets. The system will reorganize around the good stuff. The biggest hit is going to be to Wall streets reputation for competence and that hit has already been taken. They sold those bundles of securitized garbage mortgage bundles around the world and I think the world will think twice before buying into any new financial instruments these clowns plan on offering. If there is a credit crunch then it would be better for the government to use the 700 billion to directly lend and at least get a return on the investment.

Who told you the taxpayer is going to lend the money?

Bernanke made it clear that the toxic assets will be purchased at a Hold To Maturity Value, that he will determine. He went on to argue that the more we pay for these toxic securities, the more market confidence will be inspired.

He is asking for a $700billion revolving budget. Once he uses it up, he can sell the securities back to the banks for market value. He'll then have another $700 billion he can spend to buy those assets again at HTMV.

You should pay closer attention to what they say, rather than imagine how you would do this.

In start-up companies, where all the capital is put forth by investors and not executives, there is a great tendency to spend, spend, spend. Once you force the executives to put their own money into those companies there is a dramatic shift toward conservation of resources. My hope was that Wall Street executives would be forced to invest more into the firms/financial institutions they run, so they would have something at stake. I doubt this was incorporated into this bill. You could easily add that 75% of executive compensation will be in the form of stock and that executives are precluded from selling that stock for 5 years.

The column revealed the two had split up at the time but also said Frank was referring to Moses as his “spouse.” Another Washington Post report said Frank called Moses his “lover” and that the two were “still friends” after the breakup.

Frank was and remains a stalwart defender of Fannie Mae, which is now under FBI investigation along with its sister organization Freddie Mac, American International Group Inc. NYT:Stopping a Financial Crisis, the Swedish Way

By CARTER DOUGHERTY
Published: September 22, 2008

A banking system in crisis after the collapse of a housing bubble. An economy hemorrhaging jobs. A market-oriented government struggling to stem the panic. Sound familiar?

It does to Sweden. The country was so far in the hole in 1992 — after years of imprudent regulation, short-sighted economic policy and the end of its property boom — that its banking system was, for all practical purposes, insolvent.

But Sweden took a different course than the one now being proposed by the United States Treasury. And Swedish officials say there are lessons from their own nightmare that Washington may be missing.

Sweden did not just bail out its financial institutions by having the government take over the bad debts. It extracted pounds of flesh from bank shareholders before writing checks. Banks had to write down losses and issue warrants to the government.

That strategy held banks responsible and turned the government into an owner. When distressed assets were sold, the profits flowed to taxpayers, and the government was able to recoup more money later by selling its shares in the companies as well.

…cont …

..Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the opposition center-left, Mr. Bildt’s conservative government announced that the Swedish state would guarantee all bank deposits and creditors of the nation’s 114 banks. Sweden formed a new agency to supervise institutions that needed recapitalization, and another that sold off the assets, mainly real estate, that the banks held as collateral.

Sweden told its banks to write down their losses promptly before coming to the state for recapitalization. Facing its own problem later in the decade, Japan made the mistake of dragging this process out, delaying a solution for years.

Then came the imperative to bleed shareholders first. ….. there would be no sacred cows……

“For every krona we put into the bank, we wanted the same influence,” Mr. Lundgren said. “That ensured that we did not have to go into certain banks at all.”

…cont ..

By the end of the crisis, the Swedish government had seized a vast portion of the banking sector, and the agency had mostly fulfilled its hard-nosed mandate to drain share capital before injecting cash. When markets stabilized, the Swedish state then reaped the benefits by taking the banks public again.

… The politics of Sweden’s crisis management were similarly tough-minded, though much quieter.

Soon after the plan was announced, the Swedish government found that international confidence returned more quickly than expected, easing pressure on its currency and bringing money back into the country.

Let Warren Buffett Manage the Financial Bailout
Congress is rightly concerned about how and who will manage the bailout. There is no doubt that banks should not be given blank checks at arbitrary pricing for their toxic assets. Also, the Senior Executives of banks benefiting from the bailout must also agree to forgo bonuses for a number of years.

The markets need a quick positive signal from Congress, delays could bring down the entire financial world. Congress should pass a simple bailout package without getting bogged down into the hows and whys. They should request Warren Buffett to manage the entire bailout package. He is the shrewdest investor and will drive hard bargains with banks before giving them a dime. Let him impose conditions as he deems fit. He is already of the opinion that bankers will have to give up bonuses for a while.

Going by Warren's track record, an investment of $700 billion of tax payers money will probably come back to the treasury as $1 trillion. All he needs is a handful of good people to help him manage this.

Well, it didn't take long for Congress to cave into the cries of Paulson, Bernanke and the President in order to saddle the American tax payer with this burden. Isn't that always the way these things work out? It's always a problem when you have more workers than masters of the universe in control at the top of the pecking order and this problem will never change in this country unless we actually were ruled under the Constitution. it would have made more sense for the taxpayers $700 billion to be used to shutter the Federal Reserve once and for all rather than as in the past having a nation begging hat in hand for dollars printed out of thin air from a private banking cartel. Some day hopefully the American people will wake up and turn apathy and outrage into something a bit more constructive. Now apparently isn't our time.
This agreement still changes nothing for the individual. Their still hanging by a thread. Living on make believe credit, still broke with inflation running at 13%, as well as increasing energy and food costs and now the biggest financial addict in the world just got another fix in order to get him to the next crisis which is the toxic dump known as derivatives according to Warren Buffet. He must have known that the fix was in if he was willing to commit five billion of his own funds for Goldman Sachs.
The reality is that you get the government you vote for and we have just been royally screwed. Remember that come this election day as far as those of our elected officials who sold us all down the river yet again.

"10 percenter", huh? Nice, half-cocked reaction there.

From the AP:

Under the plan agreed to by key lawmakers at the Capitol, the Treasury secretary would get $250 billion immediately and could have an additional $100 billion if he certified it was needed, congressional aides said. The last $350 billion could be blocked by a vote of Congress under the arrangement, designed to give lawmakers a stronger hand in controlling the unprecedented rescue.

Is that $700 billion? There's some oversight mentioned in the story, and I'll dig to see if there's any for the initial $250B-$350B. But this is a far cry from what Stupor Mundi was asking for, isn't it?

But it's important to remember that any form bailout isn't something that would help only bankers. It effects pensions and 401k's, government bonds and the ability of the (still existent) industrial sector to take out loans to make things. There's going to be legislation passed with HUGE bi-partisan support in both the House and Senate that will barely resemble the Bush/Paulson plan. Bush might try to veto it, but Congress will override the veto.

I am aware that it passed with huge bi-partisan support, just like the patriot act, the decision to invade Iraq, the homegrown terror prevention act, immunity for telecoms, and all the other constitutional violations by Republicans and Democrats. The list of traitorous democrats is very long indeed! ...(isnt it?)
Andy K @ 131:

And that's why there is no deadlock.

There is no deadlock because Barney Frank and many others in congress are 2 bit prostitutes and big banks are the STD infected solicitors.

I guess you think free money for the big banks is OK? (as long as there is huge bi-partisan support huh?)

90% of Americans dont want this are you a "10 percenter" or what?

There is no deadlock because the Congress, who would be hung if it really came out how complicit they have been in all this -- and all too willing to take campaign contributions from these same bankster fraudsters -- and how they have been systematically working against the interests of the American people.

This is a power play to take over what is left of America and the previously rolled out police state grid will be used to crush any and all dissent. And guess what: the economy will still collapse in the end because as Herbert Hoover proved, you can't keep inflating asset prices forever. Eventually there is nothing left to inflate with.

The American people, unlike their ancestors who experienced the last great economic collapse, are not ready at all for what is coming. Better get yourself good with God in a hurry.

Hey, I'm not saying that a lot of today's actors aren't the same ones who pushed for the dereggulation in December of 2000 that set us on this course. I'm quite certain that all of the GOP supported that deregulation, I'm not sure which Dems supported it- but Frank wasn't the chairman of the House Banking Committee back then- the GOP controlled the House.

Something that's getting pretty fucking annoying right now, though, is that instead of reading from the commenters here how we extricate ourselves from this problem, all I hear are the angry villagers with pitchforks and torches, shouting about vengeance. But the villagers are standing on a trap door right now. GET OFF THE TRAP DOOR!

Found this in a McClatchy piece via TPM:

The negotiators produced a one-page "agreement on principles" that includes:

-- Funding. Treasury would be authorized to spend $700 billion, but would get only $250 billion immediately, with another $100 billion to be released once the Treasury secretary certifies the money is needed. The other $350 billion could be canceled if Congress passed a joint resolution of disapproval.

-- Executive pay. The Treasury Department would "set standards to prevent excessive or inappropriate executive compensation for participating companies."

-- Taxpayer equity. Taxpayers could share in the profits of firms that benefit from the bailout as they return to financial health.

-- Oversight. The legislation would establish a "strong oversight board with cease and desist authority," as well as an independent inspector general who would monitor "the use of the Treasury Secretary's authority." The Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm, also would audit the use of bailout funds. Regular detailed reports to Congress on the program would be required.

-- Homeowners. The agreement mandates maximum coordinated efforts to modify mortgages for homeowners at risk of foreclosure; requires loan modifications for mortgages owned by the federal government; and directs that a percentage of future profits go to federal housing funds.

-- Judicial review. The government would be barred from "acting in an arbitrary or capricious manner or in any way that is inconsistent with existing law," which ensures the possibility of legal challenges in court. The original administration plan would have prohibited judicial review.

"10 percenter", huh? Nice, half-cocked reaction there.

It's very easy to say we should let Wall Street and the banks hang by themselves, but all of our necks are in the noose right now, milquetoast.

I might have been half cocked but my shot was dead on!!! (you are looking for a bailout too arent you!)

Bullzeye!!! (you are a 10 percenter!!!

(sorry about that investment potfolio of yours) I would recommend cashing in now, and buy gold. ...or re-invest it in defense contractor stocks. Halliburton, Raytheon, ect...ect...

The Wall Street companies that will benefit from the bail out plan have our-sourced ten of thousands of jobs to India and China.
Shouldn't our billions of tax dollars be put to bringing those jobs back and help reduce the number of unemployed Americans too?

If the tab is for the full $700 Billion that Paulson demanded, as well as His/NeoCon requirement that there be no Judicial or Legislative oversight, then the American Middle Class is finished. The funds will go to irresponsible Wall Street investment bankers who will take their fat golden parachutes and bail out for "anywhere but the USA" as the economy still circles the drain.

I wouldn't trust ANY member of the Bush Crime Family with the Taxpayers' money/debt. Consider their history:

(1) The Cheney/Enron Energy plan (think about the rape of California electricity users 1999/2000/2001), being globalized by the PNAC document, target: Iraq;

(2) The Cheney/Bush misappropriation of $750 Million earmarked by Congress for the battle against the Taliban and al Queda in Afghanistan, illegally diverted to the run-up to the preemptive voluntary invasion of oil-rich Iraq;

(3) The Cheney/Bush/Brenner Provisional Iraqi Government, which not only fired all Iraqi policemen, soldiers, judges, teachers, and government employees, but also managed to lose (without a trace) $8 Billion still stacked on pallets in some Coalition-controlled warehouse;

(4) The Cheney/Bush/Brown(ie) "Keystone Kops" approach to the FEMA rescue and reconstruction on the Gulf Coast and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina;

(5) The Cheney/Bush/Rumsfeld mismanagement of that "voluntary preemptive" invasion and occupation of Iraq, (which was going to be paid for by the grateful Iraqis' oil wealth); AND

(6) The Cheney/Bush/Pentagon program of the diversion of funds earmarked by the Congress for the war^H^H^Hoccupation of Iraq to be used for nearly universal domestic spying AND pro-war^H^H^Hoccupation propaganda directed at domestic critics using MSM.

It's pretty safe to say that not only has the NeoCon vision of the unitary American superpower spelled out in their PNAC playbook has failed, but the New American Century is really the swan song of American economic power. Soon, every foreign lender will be pounding at the US Treasury's doors for their money back, and the only two choices the NeoCons will have left the American people is (1) a fire sale of domestic American assets, OR (2) nationalizing all remaining American industry and telling our overseas creditors to "go whistle!". The only thing that the NeoCons have succeeded in doing is "draining the swamp" that was the last vestiges of FDR's New Deal socialism, along with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Eisenhower Military/Industrial/Congressional Complex.

This country is flat busted! Period.
