Palin Thinks Homosexuality Is A Choice

I have to admit that my respect for Katie Couric has grown immensely this week for her surprisingly comprehensive and very damaging interview with Sarah Palin. Should the McCain/Palin ticket lose in November (oh please, let it be so), I think that there's a fairly strong argument that this interview really was the first nail in the coffin.

It hasn't gotten as much splash as her reading lists or inability to recall a single Supreme Court decision, but this little exchange definitely caught my attention, especially since in my state of California, we're fighting a proposition to eliminate the right of gays to marry:

I have, one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years who happens to be gay. And I love her dearly. And she is not my "gay friend." She is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I have made. But I am not gonna judge people. And I love America where we are more tolerant than other countries are. And are more accepting of some of these choices that sometimes people want to believe reflects solely on an individual's values or not. Homosexuality, I am not gonna judge people.

So Sarah Palin chose not to be homosexual?   C'mon...this is the 21st century.  Catch up.  It isn't a choice and it's not something you can pray away.  Nor should one need to.  The Human Rights Campaign went to Wasilla to see how the LGBT population felt about Palin as mayor and then governor:

<!--hitembed id="hitembed_1" width="300" height="243" align="none"-->

Ironically, Palin's running mate just gave an interview to the Washington Blade, an LGBT publication, the first such interview by a presidential candidate.   In it, he reiterates his anti-gay stances.  I'm guessing he's written off the Log Cabin vote.

And McCain aspires to be a dictator here.

"...Charlie?"

Just to say the facts... but the question was to name a decision that she did NOT agree with. For me.. obviously i'd think of gore v bush.. But what would a conservative say? takes a lil more thought.

So instead of framing posts like name ANY decision... name a decision you don't agree with

That's like saying people have a choice to be genius or stupid.
Sorry you made the wrong choice Sarah.

So when did she CHOOSE to be heterosexual?

Well.. that contradicts what most homosexuals believe. And what scientific evidence appears to indicate (albeit not conclusively yet).

But in all seriousness.. it's a nonissue. It wouldn't make one whit of difference whether it's purely biological/genetic or not.
Consider if it was a 'choice'..
We would say: "Well see, it's a deep-seated personal choice and conviction, like a religious one. And as such, it should be respected."
They would say: "See? It's a personal choice! They are choosing to live in sin!"

Consider if we had conclusive evidence that people were biologically 'programmed' to be gay..
We would say: "See? It's not a matter of choice. Accept it. It's natural."
They would say: "This proves it's an abberation, a genetic disease. It needs to be cured."

I really don't think it would do much to change anyone's mind.

She believes in god. This alone disqualifies her. We know Obama is an atheist, he is too bright to be otherwise.

Yeah... I saw this on another blog.

Problem is...this plays directly to her base. She looks like a compassionate Christian while still giving the "shame shame" sign on homosexuality.

There are many people like Wingnut Palin in this country.

Yeah, right. A choice in the same way that I've liked female feet since I was a toddler.

No choice there. I came out that way. Hard-wired.

Oh, and good comment at No. 5, carpenter.

Gawd, this woman is scary ...

So Sarah is claiming she's had a gay friend since she was 14? I wonder who she is.

I guess we can now say the phrase "Palin thinks" is a contradiction in terms.

Her hero Bush 'chose' to have his homosexual prostitute Jeff Gannon as a guest in the White House.

McCain pulling out of Michigan

John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.

McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.

If Palin had a gay friend that was really close to her, Palin would know that homosexuality isn't some choice she picked off the sexuality menu.

Quick, somebody find her special pal and get the real story, cuz this is just another lie. She would shoot them from helicopters (as was mentioned in a different context, elsewhere, today) if gays were in season.

She needs to go back to broadcast journalism and stand in front of the weather map and just smile at it.

Maybe she should choose to be gay.
Just until November.
Might get her a few votes.
Not only that, but it would make her answers more interesting:
Gibson: "Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?"
Palin: "Mmm. I do now!"

The choice I question was hers to get on an airplane after her water broke with a Down's Syndrome baby. Any Mother with half a brain would have gone to the hospital in Texas. She risked her life and that of her unborn child. Not only did she choose to fly to Alaska, she choose to by pass a hospital with a neonatal unit to drive on to clinic. This was a pre-term baby with a genetic abnormality. This woman needs her head examined.

Gee...what every bigoted person says...when defending themselves...

"But I have a long time friend who is.....insert words here"

Oh and god do I hate these 'alibi' arguments.

"I'm not a racist, I have many black friends.."
"I'm not an anti-semite, I have a jewish friend.."
"I'm not a homophobe, I've got a gay hairdresser.."

It's BULLSHIT. Okay? Hitler had jewish friends. It proves nothing.

[Deleted. Banned bigot-Sitemonitor]

How does someone choose to be sexually attracted to a particular sex? These God-Fearin' neocons are a bunch of haters who CHOOSE to be assholes. It's the loudest protesters who are usually concealing their true identities. "I am not gay, I've never been gay..." right Larry?

Wasn't this the precedent of the 1950 way of thinking on Gays choices? I know I have seen this movie!
"Far from Heaven" set in the 1950's Connecticut

She needs to get out more.

I just love how she has a gay friend and somehow it's okay to rationalize her bizarre thoughts. It is almost the same as hearing a bigot claiming that some of his best friend are darkies. There will be always those that have choices to put down others for being different in order to feel superior, to feel elite among others for the wrong reason.

At the RNC, who went to visit the Log Cabin Goopers? No one...some unknown schmoe from some local political scene. Not one senator. Not one high ranking Gooper.

More of people voting against their own interests.

Someone clue me in as to WTF is wrong with people. Are they too blind to see? Too deaf to hear? Or just too friggin's stupid? I am missing so much these days. Hell, maybe it is *I* who is stupid for even having interests.

So what if that is her view or perspective on gays.

If this woman sneezes wrong, you wacky liberals jump all over her. Open your eyes to your own "Presidential" candidate. Obama has made choices over and over again that are questionable to say the least, but you rather try to tear down the “Vice Presidential” candidate. Good strategy.

Oh I see- Palin is a bisexual who's chosen to only have sex with men.

If it is a choice, its a better choice than McCain choosing Palin for VP

Find her gay "friend" and find the lie.

I hate when people say shit like that. How the hell does this very dumb woman know? I'm hetero, and I have no clue to how I got this way.

She's a fundy who believes in creationism, that dinosaurs lived at the same time humans did and is on a video being protected through some kind of ritual from "witchcraft". So her beliefs about homosexuality are a surprise... why?

Given her wacky religious beliefs that we're already aware of, I find it astonishingly progressive (in a relative sense of that word) that she actually has (and admits to having) a gay friend who she claims "not to judge".

This is not an endorsement or defense of Palin. It's rather a statement that there are wackier beliefs of hers that we can spotlight.

Bit NOLA @ 15:

If Palin had a gay friend that was really close to her, Palin would know that homosexuality isn't some choice she picked off the sexuality menu.

Not necessarily. There's a good chance that her friend is also a religious nutjob who thinks the she is a sinner for being gay and that she can be "fixed".

There's a video here by a guy who visited Alaska to see how the locals feel about this very subject. Seems things changed for the gay community when Sarah had a position of power. Either she used religion or religion used her. I'm not sure which.

Her view is important because she aspires to hold a position of power over American citizens, some of them apparently are gay, and darn their satanic fornicating ways, the expect and deserve equal treatment from the govt and the law.

I don't know, well I do know I suppose, why there is ANY analysis out there that thinks she could possibly "do well" in the debate or is a good debater. You can not overcome stupidity and being chronically uninformed. I watched her Alaska debates and they were TOTALLY different than what she faces tonight. She'll do her smiling beauty queen vapidity tonight. She'll toss out some pre-arranged "zingers". Some of the pundits will ooh and ahh. However, outside of the real core base the rest of America (as the polls demonstrate) think she is somewhere between dumb and stupid. They know she is uninformed. Not only was there not this baggage going into the Alaska debates but there was no real pre-conception of her. And, in the Alaska debates, her cute little "zingers" worked for that particular, small, unique, audience. There is not a DAMNED thing she is capable of doing tonight that is going to make anyone feel any better about her as VP or Pres. She won't change a vote one way or the other. The only thing that can change this race is Obama and/or McCain.

[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]

The two of you can just shut the fuck up. No really, both of you.

Obama is a Christian. That's it. His father was an atheist. He is a Christian.
I am an atheist and I'm STILL voting for Obama.

'Queers' as you so derisively call them, are HUMAN BEINGS. They are no different than you except in their sexual preference which is BIOLOGICAL.

The whole "Progressives are intolerant of people who believe in God" argument is so worn out and tired it's pathetic. There are plenty of religious people on this side of the political aisle, so just give it up.

Both of you, Take that to the bank, cash it, and go on a fucking vacation out of our lives, PLEASE.

It's got to be from when she was Sarah Barracuda on the Wasilla HS basketball team. I'm just sayin.

Not of gay people we're not. (Esp in red states)

My favorite example.. Pim Fortuyn - the Dutch anti-immigration politician. What those on the right call a right-wing populist and those on the left were calling a right-wing extremist. He also happened to be openly and flamboyantly gay. (Always traveling by limo with his three white poodles)

That's how liberal the Dutch are! Even their goddamn wingnuts are allowed to be openly gay!

I have a very good friend who just happens to have green eyes. Now I wouldn't choose to have green eyes, and don't have green eyes, but my friend - and it's not my "green-eyed friend" just my friend does have green eyes, and I respect and love that friend with or without green eyes.

36 Filthy Harry:

Interesting.

"I have, one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years who happens to be gay."

Nice line. Ain't true. Andrew Sullivan has been all over this. No one in Alaska seems to know who the hell she's talking about. She won't name them and that person refuses to stand up and be noted, so....

Is it the voices in her head? AGAIN?

p.s. And I love the "...who happens to be gay." phrase. Like, "...my Uncle Bob, who happens to be a pedophile...". How come it's never, "...my friend Bob, who happens to be straight..."?

Sarah Palin is hilarious in an "oh-my-god-we're-all-going-to-die!" kinda way.

Nobody chooses their sexual urges and impulses, but individuals do indeed CHOOSE to act upon them (both gay or straight). Both sides of this argument are way too emotional and need to deal with logic and reason, rather than their johnson. Our economy is hemorrhaging and we're chin deep in cruel and unjust wars and THIS is STILL among the major talking points for libbycons? Why not education, immigration reform, etc. Are we that obsessed with talking about ejaculations??? The world might be a better place if everybody masterbated, those who have been with their significant other know what time it is!

No one would jump on Sarah Palin for sneezing wrong, because that is not the phrase you fucking moron. The phrase is "If she BREATHES wrong." Learn to speak before typing.

I'm sure he's been affiliated with known criminals of all sorts over the years. How about Palin? She's affiliated with an organization that hates America and wants to secede. It amaze me to see people praising Katie for exposing Palin for who she really is, when Katie have proven to willingly to carry the GOP water for McCain.
Tina Fey could not have written a better comedy routine than what Sarah Palin have already provided, and Katie in spite of her best effort can not save Sarah Palin from herself, nor could McCain take control of the leash around Palin's neck. If what we are getting in spite of Couric and McCain editorial censureship, then I can't fathom of who the real Sarah Palin is unfiltered. I rather watch "Friday the 13th" movie than seeing the real Palin.

[Deleted. Banned bigot-Sitemonitor]

Someone should ask Sarah, when did she make the choice not to be a lipstick dyke?

Well, there actually is a valid interpretation of her comments that would fit perfectly with what she said, even while assuming that she's telling the truth. What's that, you ask?

Why, that Sarah Palin is, in fact, a lesbian herself!

We all know that being gay or not isn't a choice, but her friend actually did make a choice that Sarah never did - to come out of the closet. So unless Ms. Palin is either lying or completely ignorant, that's the only interpretation that will actually fit with the known facts.

Of course being homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual isn't a choice. But, what if it was? What would be the difference? If someone chose to be homosexual or bisexual, does that make them less of a person, less worthy of rights, or less human than a heterosexual? If someone feels "wrong" in their body, should they not get the chance to express what they believe is their true self through the steps leading to gender reassignment, if that is what is right for them? The whole topic is ridiculous; relationships between consenting adults, that provides them with the love they want in a partner should be celebrated. Pre-18 kids who are figuring out what they feel should be allowed to discover that without fear. Come on, the human species MUST be better than this!

liberaltraitor@83

AnotherWatcher @ 54:

As someone said above. There is no scientific evidence it is a genetic thing.

I'm the only one to mention science so far, so I guess you mean me. And that's pretty much the opposite of what I said. I said the scientific evidence is leaning that way, but that it isn't entirely conclusive.

If it IS proven to be genetic, it is a genetic MISTAKE and queers are just genetic misfits. Or if you will, genetic aberrations and no different than a Downs child or any other genetic mistake.

Well that's interesting, since I've never heard someone cast moral judgment on someone with Downs syndrome due to their condition. And there's really no such thing as a genetic 'mistake'. Nature doesn't make mistakes. Nature does what nature does. "Mistakes" require judgement. Nature doesn't have one. Humans do.

Besides, you have a seriously flawed understanding of genetics if you think you can easily make that kind of judgment. Is sickle-cell anemia a 'mistake'? It kills the victim. But someone who only carries the gene has a higher resistance to malaria. The gene is still around because the net effect was positive for survival, at least in West Africa where the gene is common. We don't know what, if any, gene causes homosexuality, and therefore you cannot possibly know what else that gene might affect. Given that is has to do with sexuality, it might in fact be something entirely necessary for sexual reproduction as a whole - and therefore survival for everybody. In which case calling it an 'aberration' would be ridiculous.

Alex,

If it is about choice to be a homosexual, then could anybody explain to me about gay birds. There are many examples of homosexuality in the animal kingdom and I dont think that they made a choice about being gay. So until anybody can come up with a valid explanation on why "lower" forms of life can make a choice on being gay or not it will not be about making a choice.

I suppose it's possible that this incompetent twit is actually implying that one can't choose to be gay or straight, but that one can choose whether or not to act on that behavior by having sinful, sinful gay sex. As someone said above. There is no scientific evidence it is a genetic thing. If it IS proven to be genetic, it is a genetic MISTAKE and Jews are just genetic misfits. Or if you will, genetic aberrations and no different than a Downs child or any other genetic mistake.

There, fixed that for you big guy.

LOL

You said it. How can people possibly be THAT ignorant? Frankly, they astound me.

HAHAhahaha. So exposing bigotry is actually bigotry?

Good try. Now shoo, little troll. Shoo.

[Deleted-Sitemonitor]

So how are you not a bigot again? Please explain, this should be wildly entertaining.

[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]

Well she must think it's a choice because she's choosing to behave heterosexually. Lots of people don't have a choice, because they aren't bi, Sarah.

You folks realize that bringing up arguments about Obama's religion is only meant to divert the conversation away from the actual topic.
My advice to everyone here, as well as Biden tonight and Obama in the future ~ DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!
Stick to the discussion at hand.
Do not let the cowards frame the debate.

She needs to tell that to Mike Buse, John McCain's cheif of staff. HE IS GAY and works to deny other gay people their rights. Let's just have a little honesty, please, Ms. RepubliKKKon.

ASK BUSE IF HE HAS A CHOICE OF BEING GAY OR NOT, MOOSOLINI.

All things in life are a choice...whether they are easy choices or not is to be debated

You all have misunderstood me. I think that male gayness is genetic but come on now all you know the opposite to be true of gay women!!!

Left&left@86

Sounds like you're the type that will go to a protest just to protest without even knowing what it's about. "Yeah we're against it, we want change. What are we protesting again?"

can we have this video clip, please?

Asked why Obama has been rising as the Wall Street crisis has dominated attention, McCain said with a chuckle on Fox News Channel: "Because life isn’t fair.”

http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/10/mccain...

I guess you never had children. If you did you would know that you watch who their friend are and not let them hang around the wrong crowd because THEY DO INFLUENCE THEM. How do you have friends for decades and not share their views?

Oh I don't know, probably the same way that one of my good friends of the last 10 years is a Republican and I'm not. Probably in the same way that my Dad is a Republican, always has been, and I'm not. Probably because people who are actually intelligent can make their own decisions.

Don't feed the trolls.

"I say leave it with the bigoted, they're animals anyway...so let them lose their souls."

The trolls are being replaced by the gay hating freaks! Check out the sick fuck, Another piece of shit@99.

Ignorance is a choice. Bigotry is a choice. That makes Palin two for two.

Alex @ 84:

Filthyharry@76

Come on Harry. Obama goes to a church for 20 years and listens to hate sermons and isn't influenced by this. Please.

When Obama says in an interview "I support terrorists and hate America", I'll be worried. Palin is being criticized for her very own words revealing her character and beliefs, which are fundamentally different than most reading this blog. You can't argue that. But you can argue that Obama's "associations" or whatever are just associations and not a reflection of decisions he would make in office or influence he would have.

I'm really not sure how you defend Palin making clear her opinions which offend most of us. Some will vote for her because she believes homosexuality is a choice, others will not vote for her since this reveals a shallow and unthinking person. Luckily, the latter seems to be the case.

Excuse me while I quickly and easily deflate your bubble of hot air: MANY churches across the country preach that most of America is going to hell. In other words, they say America is damned. Or you could say goddamn America. Same thing, said in many many churches across the country every sunday.

What a dumb comment. Yeah let's debate, but only have one side. Sounds like the liberal doctrine. Unbelievable.

This is what Joe six pack feels, although it seems Joe Six Pack is even wondering about Sarah's qualifications. McCains number continue to fall.

Who knew....

Maybe Palin is Bi....

So did she just flip a coin on "choice" regarding sexual preferences?...

"What’s a name for a liberal troll? Cuz’ there are a lot of them."

Intelligent, progressive, open minded?

How about...Ghandi, Jesus, Lincoln.

Please, let's get off this tack about admiring Paleo b/c of a Down syndrome child. It's the same as buttering up McCain b/c he was a POW. Just play the hand you were dealt. Everybody does.

I know plenty of regular folks who have raised Down syndrome children and kept them with them for their whole lives, without this mass adulation, pats on the head, or special help. Palin's not necessarily a paragon of virtue b/c of a handicapped child. She chose to have children. There are no guarantees.

SocialLib was at comment # 106, not # 109, so I guess we know you can't count now.

Plus, at what point did SocialLib say you couldn't post here? Exactly, he/she didn't. He/she simply suggested that we start ignoring you because you and your little buddy are fucking morons. This is my last post to you as I think I might just take SocialLib's advice.

[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]

[Deleted. Banned bigot-Sitemonitor]

wow.

ANOTHER McCain campaign LIE.
McCain claims to have cosponsored legislation to regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but the Democrat minority "blocked" him. John McCain sponsored this bill TEN MONTHS after it died in committee and more a year and a half after it was first submitted. He did NOTHING to revive the bill and is using this as an excuse for his efforts at regulation. This man has no shame.

Check out http://thomas.loc.gov and sarch for the bill S.190 for the 109th congress. There are 3 cosponsors. Two of them were real and one was fake. COSPONSORS(3) Sen Dole, Elizabeth NC - 1/26/2005 Sen Sununu, John E. NH - 1/26/2005 Sen McCain, John AZ - 5/25/2006 <== 16 months late http://4thoffense.com/mc.html

Thats most of them. I prefer my president not go to church at all. But if my president does go to church I prefer it to be a matter of obligation and lip service.

Still what is important is that Sarah Palin's stated views are what she's said. Your points against Obama are untrue, don't mean what you think they mean or can be applied to Palin and McCain to make them look even worse than they make Obama look.

rick street @ 85:

What I can't figure out is why her youngest child decided to be born with down's syndrome.

LOL! I get the analogy, but one clarification - the child was not BORN with Down's Syndrome. He chose it after he was born. I would not have made that choice but I won't judge.

i WILL give palin some credit though raising 5 children
and one of those children is a Down Syn. newborn I’m
wondering how she does it.

She farms them out to different relatives.

I'm glad you posted this. When say this segment I screamed at the screen for Katie to call her on that statement. I know it was too much to expect, though. I just love the look I get when I respond to comments about homosexuality being a choice by asking, "So, tell me about the moment you choose to be heterosexual." Someday I'll capture that look on camera because it's always priceless.

81 motorfingaz Says: Someone should ask Sarah, when did she make the choice not to be a lipstick dyke?

The correct terminology is lipstick LESBIAN - dykes are usually butch. Femmes are known as the lipsticks. Although I guess she could qualify for both as she field dresses a moose and shoots wolves from airplanes. Personally, that's the stuff of nightmares.

Please, do not lump the likes of persons like Palin in with those of us that are proud to be gay. And as others have said, there is no friend but maybe an acquaintance. You know, like the neighbor down the street that she sometimes sees at the grocery store.

Let's think about this now. According to Sarah, the most fundamental piece of a human's existence, our sexual identity, is a choice. Thus, everything we are is a choice. And we are defined by our choices.

So, in PalinWorld she:
- chose to go to that church and chose to have a pastor protect her from the evils of "witchcraft" (weird);
- chose to harass her ex-brother-in-law as Governor (abuse of power);
- chose to fire a Police Chief who didn't agree with her about the ex-bro (abuse of power);
- chose to "change her mind" about the "Bridge to Nowhere" and mischaracterize that change (lie);
- chose to lobby for and receive huge earmarks for Alaska but denounce earmarks to the party faithful (lie);
- chose to cooperate with the State legislature investigation into her office, then not cooperate, then to end the investigation (obstruction)...

Yes, Sarah, I guess we are defined by our choices. Enjoy yourself tonite!

p.s. And remember what you learned from those pageant days, 'hon. "Tits, Teeth, Tiara!"

Interesting thread we got going here. I wonder if I'm a bigot. Because I hate Religion. Hate it. I don't hate the people who believe though. I think they are manipulated and fooled. Believers are victims. I feel sorry for them. But I don't respect their beliefs. I don't have to. I, also, don't try to stop them from believing. Other than pointing out that the bible is very insufficient at explaining the world we live in. I can't accept miracles, spirits, angles, demons etc. etc...... anything supernatural or make believe. Because its all so UN-REAL! All I ask is that religious people leave their imagination at church or home and when you come out in public to deal with what we can agree on i.e. that which is tangible.

129 Alex Says: liberaltraitor@121 122 whatever it takes.

Yeah go debate with people that you totally agree with. That is productive and progressive.

Go find me a conservative who has an IQ above 4 and I will debate him or her. I never mentioned anything about whether or not you and I agree, just that you are a fucking moron and therefore a waste of my time. But since I have an addictive personality I can't seem to stop answering you.

I just can't quit you, Alex.
