Which Sarah Palin Will Appear At The Debate?
By Nicole Belle Wednesday Oct 01, 2008 7:15pmIt's a big mistake to discount Palin tonight. Yeah, she's appeared as an ill-prepared, out of her league wannabe in the Couric interview, but the format of tonight's debate definitely favors her strong points--90 second responses, sitting down, etc. and the McCain campaign has been in overdrive to manage expectations no matter her performance
The word from the DNC is that they have prepped her to go nasty. That's a warning for Biden, who--if he falls in the trap--could damage himself by appearing to be patronizing or too aggressive towards her.
But this could be a make or break moment for the slowly slipping McCain campaign. As Howard Fineman says on today's Hardball, Palin's performance tonight will reflect McCain's judgment:

Film showed Palin getting off the plane today with her hair down. If she shows up for the debate tonight with it still down, lookout for an ear piece (ala Bush in his debates).
I think they realize that palin will probably look bad no matter what, so their strategy is to take biden down with em. make em both look bad.
My suggestion: be as nice as Katie Couric, and if she doesn't answer a question, point it out every time.
the retarded one, is there another?
I figure the wispy little wide-eyed ingenue act isn't going to play, so Palin will try dazzling them with bullshit and fancy footwork.
here are some questions she SHOULD be answering:
http://agonist.org/dejah_thoris/20081002/an_open_letter_to_sarah_palin
If she gets too nasty, the only people she'll turn on are the 20% who still support George Bush.
Diana, I totally agree with you about her hair being down could be a sign she has an earpiece in. Also look for bagging clothing too, but if she wears her normal boob-enhancing clothes and sounds extremely smart, then I would assume she's got a cordless earpiece in and is being talked to via satellite. LOL
Palin will struggle to fill 2 minutes with an answer to any question without having to repeat the same material over and over again, while Biden will struggle to answer the questions without exceding the 2 minutes alloted him. Palin's responses will be a bunch of one-liners, trying for that "gotcha" moment sound bite the press can run with for days on end, and she can repeat on the stump for the next 4 weeks. Regardless of how it goes tonight, if Palin can get one decent sound bite out of it, the Republicans will claim victory.
I'm a hockey mom from alaska!!!!!!!
How will anyone know if it is Palin or Tina fey?
Sitting down?
We are all expecting her to tank, just as we expected McCain to tank at Saddleback and again during his debate. He held his own and I fully expect Palin will as well. If she can just manage to not talk in tongues, as she did with Couric - not in fork tongue as it was about as circular is possible, possibly in spooned tongues, she will carry herself well.
She has debated before, and if you read any of the reviews, or interviews with those who debated her, she can provide an answer which has no answer at all…not pertaining to the question, at least.
She connects to “real people” (read those who read Double-Wide Weekly) with folksy stories and being a cute little thang.
Make no mistake in discounting her. It will not be that easy.
It would be unwise to have low expectations for this woman. I have no doubt she'll be charming and hit those talking points well. Americans are just stupid enough to fall for that kind of stuff. In fact, I'd be willing to bet she'll come off better than McCain.
Palin will probably repeat the rehearsed material well. But if Ifill has Palin think on her feet, watch her stumble. She's not good at introspection or insightful answers.
And watch her turn nasty. That's her forte.
Biden has to remain calm and warm. Keep his answers short and informative. Treat Palin like a lady. Refute the lies.
If she turns nasty, that opens the door for him to put her in her place.
-------------------------------------
Btw, get a load of the calls on CSPAN. Scary.
If this goes badly for Palin...what am I saying..'if' HA
This will go badly for Palin and the blame will fall on Biden being "too patronizing" and/or "Gwen Ifill is baised towards Obama".
Look for these excuses-they are already gearing up to use them.
KayInMaine @ 6:
Could be, but does that make her perform better or worse? I still laugh when I think of Bush screaming, "let me finish", at the voice in his ear, when he had about two minutes time allotted.
All this hand-wringing about what happens if Biden appears too aggressive is pure B.S.! Biden was hired to be the junkyard dog, and he better be able to handle the pitbull with lipstick. Obama is often viewed as overly nice. If Biden goes over the top aggressive it might frighten a few grannies away from the polls, but it will energize the base and bring a load of rednecks into the blue camp. I say it wins Obama 5 votes for every woman who he loses because they "feel sorry" for poor old Sarah Barracuda.
Go for the jugular Joe!

Yup. Hair down = earpiece. Receiver in bandage? There is a good diary on this subject over at D Kos.
Maine, too.
GoodGod @ 16:
I wonder if they will have any of those folding chairs that always seem to appear on WWF?
Could it be that the McCain/Rove campaign has been dumbing her down in the lead up and tonight? Could we instead see the confident professional she was in the gubernatorial debates in Alaska? And Biden needs to be firm, brief, and as aggressive as necessary. If she lies about his record and he doesn't say boo, then the Obama campaign needs to ask why they are handing this election to the other side. They will pile on anything he does. He might as well go for it.
Once again our 'Democracy' is denied the hearing of other voices and reduced to the Corporate approved.
The people lose!
Nader/Gonzalez
The expectations of her are so low, I think if she doesn't keel over a start foaming at the mouth she will be declared a winner.
I'm sure they have about a dozen zingers ready for her and they are hoping she can get the sound bites to make up for the lack of substance.
She's probably been coached: Keep it short, don't ramble, use your zingers and bat your eyes a lot.
And hope that Biden makes a major gaffe.

Ceci, do tell. I am in a hotel with no CSPAN.
Which Sarah Palin Will Appear At The Debate?
http://www.comics.com/comics/getfuzzy/index.html
NYTimes today pointed out that McCain’s Choice did not participate in trade missions to Russia where she could have met all kinds of foreigners, some with actual responsibility even:
Reflect McCain's judgement? He's been in the Senate for 26 years and 2 weeks ago he was stating that the economy was basically sound. His sound judgement has left him decades ago before Keating.
Good Lord, you mean there's more than one of her?
Run for the hills!
enough @ 20:
you are making a funny, right?
Too bad it's not a real debate. That would be funny.
Okay folks... popcorn is getting popped as we speak..... drinks anyone? Feel like I'm about to attend a opening for a new play. (comedy? drama? tonge-in-cheek? fantasy?.... I'm all a-jitters!!!
I just have this to say about the economy is that it's a mistake to confuse positive macroeconomics with...10/4 goodbuddy, 10/4 goodbuddy what's your ETA...normative microeconomics.
Now we'll finally know who's the master debater.
MsJoanne @ 23:
Ms. Joanne, although there were Democrats and Independents who called in support of Obama, most of the lines were filled with Republicans and Independents who gushed about Sarah Palin.
They were rather typical in this way:
1)Elderly women who believe that "Obama is not the right choice" and "McCain would make this country better".
2)A Black republican saying that "Obama does not have the ability to lead" and that "Palin will out perform the rest".
3)A Black Democrat from Baltimore saying that she was sick of the Democratic Party and will vote for McCain and Palin. She feels that the Democrats have dropped the ball.
4) A former Vietnam Vet who wouldn't vote for Obama even if his life didn't depend on it. He said some rather menacing things about Mr. Obama.
5)A person who wanted Ron Paul and Nader to make it into the White House, especially filling in Cabinet Positions afforded to the environment.
These were a sample of the callers. :(
I'll be watching to see how they will react after the debate is over. :)

Well neither one can tell the difference between being laughed at or laughed with.
Which Sarah Palin will show up??? TINA FEY!!!!
"Gidget" Palin is in the house ladies and gentlemen. "Gidget" has entered the auditorium.
I heard she fell while jogging today and will be wearing a bandage on her hand. She could just take it off for 90 minutes, but in my own so cynical way, I think she'll wear it as a sympathy card.
Might make her look fragile tho'. God knows she's already got stupid down.
The Very Bitter Ceci Hussein @ 33:
It's funny...watch the numbers at rallys, at this debate, in most other public venues and you get just the opposite. All I can say is that radio/television selects the callers it puts on the air.
They'll tell sarah to put the electronic device in her eustachian tube, and she'll shove it up her whazoo.
So if you see her ducking behind the lectern a lot we'll know.
diana @ 1:
And a shock device in case she starts straying off script.
karen marie @ 35:
Hey. Let's not second guess them. Rove and his henchmen are dirty. And in the events before the debate, there were a group of Republicans (Lieberman, Danforth and others included) sitting in the audience. They had to point that out--even on C-SPAN. No one said if there were any Democrats in the audience...yet.
Rove, Kristol, and Kissinger are in the control room.
McPale's Navy @ 39
I'm impressed. I was beginning to think the poor thing couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time.
Biden is a veteran politician- and a veteran of these situations. The bottom line: he freakin better deliver the goods. No goddamn excuses. There is simply no excuse for him to falter in any way. The facts- the war, the economy, health care-are all on his side.
Yellow Cake is for Twinkies @ 9:
If the answers are intelligent we should find out where they hid her so Tina Fey could take her place! Also I agree about the earpiece, can Biden demand that they look to see if there is one if her hair is down?
Each time Democrats and liberals take a shot at her religious beliefs and moral choices, she gains political ground, or at a minimum, holds some for herself and McCain.

I consider the menacing calls to be like the actions of the trolls: only there to create doubt in the minds of undecided voters. Those calls are also pretty much like those fixed polls on Drudge and FOX.
Otherwise, I agree with you. The rallies and other public venues do tell a different tale than what these callers would like you to believe. I've never seen McCain draw crowds as large as Obama in any public venue.
Will the debate run online anywhere?

That's our job now !
Like in the last debate, I'm still nervous. Don't ask me why. 8-P
I believe like many there's a very good chance Palin will do fine. I base that on the fact that it's a controlled environment. there's a good chance she won't answer questions completely/directly. There keeping her away
from the media because it's random and NO time frame. I want more
media interviews. Couric exposed her....I haven't approved of Palin
since that Friday morning. We need to keep up the pressure.
MountainMan23 @ 49:
And another crummy hotel connection. :( At least this hotel has MSNBC. I could barely tolerate a couple of the tools on CNN last time...not that MSNBC doesn't have its own tools (Gregory, Buchanan and if I seen either of those lying bitches Nicole Wallace [whom, if you are a Law and Order: CI fan is Goren's - now dead - arch enemy murderer lying bitch, not that I am making any comparison, mind ya ;) ] or Pluffenhauffen whateverthefuckhernameis, I am going to spit).
Of course I am never home for the good stuff.

While they'll be getting thru this beauty contest (answers limited to 90 sec soundbites), how about HELPING OUR CANDIDATE? Here's what just came into my Inbox from Obama-Biden, and I have to share with you (bolding is mine):
.
"" This debate is also extremely important because early voting began this
week in eight states -- including the crucial battleground state of Ohio.
In fact, the votes cast in Ohio this weekend could ultimately decide who
wins this whole election. There are only four days left in the narrow window of opportunity when voters can register and vote early all in one step.
Republican operatives tried to shut down one-stop early vote in court this
week, but they failed. And now you can help provide the resources for an intensive four-day Get Out The Vote operation before the window closes.
Make a donation of $5 or more today to help Get Out The Vote in Ohio and other early vote states.
Early voting will play a bigger role this year than ever before.
And after tonight's debate, voters will be motivated to cast their ballots
for the change this country needs.
Joe Biden and I share a vision for the future of this country, and it's very different from the vision of our opponents.
I'm sure you'll see that contrast in tonight's debate.
But there's another contrast that you can see in every aspect of this campaign. Joe and I know that real change comes from the bottom up, not the top down. That's why we've always put our faith in supporters like you.
Make a donation of $5 or more right now to help reach Ohio voters and
Get Out The Vote in other early vote states.
