CNN host and former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Sunday said that Hillary Clinton would eventually lose support for her 2016 White House bid because she was only "famous for being famous."

Speaking to the Clinton Global Initiative University at Arizona State University last week, Clinton had pointed out that candidates could learn a lot from losing elections.

CNN's Candy Crowley wondered how those comments applied to a possible 2016 presidential run.

"First Lady, Senator, Secretary Clinton is very famous for being famous," Gingrich opined. "And as long as she can continue to be famous, she will be famous."

"Now, you're in the middle of a mess in Russia," he continued, slamming Clinton for presenting Russia’s ambassador to Switzerland with a toy "reset button" as a joke.

"The fact is, she reset the relationship with Russia so well that you currently have the occupation of Crimea, and the potential occupation of Ukraine," the former House Speaker insisted. "So Secretary Clinton on substance -- the morning this race becomes about substance, she will start losing support literally overnight."

Center for American Progress CEO Neera Tanden reminded Gingrich that Russian President Vladimir Putin had attacked Clinton in the past because she had been a critic of his policies years after the so-called "reset."
