A viral report that began circulating on social media platforms claiming that a trophy hunter had been attacked and eaten alive by the brother of a lion he had killed for an Instagram photo turned out to be a hoax.

Instant Karma indeed. But did it really happen?

Update: The story appears to be false.

According to MandyNews,

The original source of the claim appears to be a website called River City Post, which published an article on January 25th with the headline, “Trophy hunter eaten alive by the brother of the lion he eliminated for an Instagram story.” The article included a graphic video that it claimed showed the incident. However, the website provides no credible sourcing or evidence to back up the claim, and upon further investigation, it is clear that the video is not of the incident it purports to show but rather a short video posted four years ago by CBS News on a report of a suspected poacher eaten by lions.

The video below is actually one from 2013, according to Snopes.

As John Lennon once said, instant karma is going to get you. That is certainly the case with a story coming out of South Africa, in which a trophy hunter of lions was reportedly found dead after having been eaten by a pride that he had been hunting.

That pride included the brother of one of the great cats he had posed next to in one of his viral Instagram posts after having hunted the animal. The hunter is well known for his Instagram account, in which he often shares photos and videos of his hunts, particularly of lions.

“The man was heard screaming from a distance by people outside near the South African city of Phalaborwa,” said the River City Post.

The lions had reportedly devoured most of the man before his body was discovered, left identifiable as his head was untouched.

A partial video of his end. There's been some doubt cast whether this story is genuine or not. UPDATE: It's not. The video is from 2013.

And John Lennon's famous song.
