Did you check out their backgrounds? Or are you just assuming that they were all born rich? Romney in that clip stated he didn't grow up poor, but his Dad grew up that way. Huntsmans father made it good, his grandfather was a teacher, and his grandmother was a homemaker. Your a teacher, what do you make? What do you think a teacher made in 1937? Not really a legacy of riches. So yes even the two that came from rich parents, can and probably did hear about parents/grandparents. I know I did, I was told about my grandfather walking home with a bucket of coal daily, because they couldn't afford to have it delivered. And they were lucky, there was a family down the street who lived in a tent, they started having a house build and the depression then the war hit.

The best I can find on the rest of the candidates, they either grew up lower middle class/upper lower class. Rick Perry might be the exception to that though, his parents have been described as ranchers and/or tenant farmers. If they owned the land his parents may have been decently well off, if they were tenant farmers/ranchers probably not, but possibly.

And last but definitely not least, long time no talk. I hope you have been doing well and wish you the best in the upcoming year(and beyond).

Edwin's picture

The only thing I'm assuming is they are wanna-be gangsters and poised to loot and pillage, if only they can convince you they're trustworthy. If they can rope you in with their schtick they get the keys to the kingdom.

Things are OK. Hope you're well.

OK. I see. So Iran is threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz in reaction to threats of sanctions, which in turn are due to a recent International Atomic Energy Agency report suggested that Iran's nuclear program was military in nature, a claim denied by Iran. Swell.

It seems to me, all eyes should be on that Atomic Energy Agency, very suspicious of its validity, and checking it thrice.
It seems to me, that unless we want to be made fools again by propaganda and half truths, we should do more than rely on a recent International Atomic Energy Agency report, and find out definitively through multiple sources, and let it takes years if that's what it takes to be sure.

Ya, that was my first thought. And if they don't have a military nuclear program, they sure are chosing the wrong way to convince the world of it.

Still, i think the Atomic Energy Agency report is not nearly enough to go on. Such reports have been known to be wrong, including in very recent history - bush, cheney, i'm looking in your direction.

we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud."

They're using the same exact formula that was used on Iraq. We'll have to see on this one. One thing that certainly biases my opinion is the war in Iraq. The 8 year Iraq/Iran war of the 1980s clearly illustrated that Iraq was a counterweight to Iran. Rumsfeld was Reagan's envoy to Iraq during this war.

So, there was no doubt in my mind that removing Saddam would remove that counterweight. Therefore, I think it was clear, back in 2003, that war with Iraq would lead to war with Iran.

My theory is corroborated in Bush's "axis of evil" speech on January 29, 2002. There was no reason to demonize Iran, even if true, since Shiite Iran was assisting us in dealing with the Sunni Taliban.

So, where are we now? We're getting a crying of wolf with Iran that mirrors the crying of wolf with Iraq. But, this is getting interesting. In Iraq, we fired the first shot. Saddam was cooperating with the weapons inspectors. If Iran fires the first shot, that's going to be a different ball game.

The wild card is China. And this illustrates the failure of free trade. Why trade with a military advisory? And China doesn't even have to deal with the matter in a military fashion. They hold enough U.S. debt to derail the dollar as a world currency at their whim.

mudshark's picture

That we did Iraq to flank Iran.think about it.
And your premise about China is spot on.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

That's Rumsfeld speech.

Saddam's army fell in the timeline. But I don't think the neocons figured on the insurgency. That cost us 1 trillion dollars.

The Republicans clearly want war with Iran, (Ron Paul excluded)

We'll see if Obama can skipper this issue without a full blown war.

One think is for sure. I don't need a Newt or Romney as an alternative to Obama. Insofar as foreign policy is concerned, only Ron Paul makes sense. If we're spending more than the rest of the world combined on defense, then we have a bunch of dumbbells formulating foreign policy, don't we?

Because Bush fucked it up Bush ignored it. 13k troops? Don't read too much into what I'm saying here. What I am saying is that if your going to put our service people in harms way, do it right and get it over with fast. Bush didn't do that.He went off on a tirade on a country that had nothing to do with any of it.

commerce. In particular, racial discrimination in commerce.
http://www.ronpaul.com/on-the-issues/civil-ri...

"The rights of all private property owners, even those whose actions decent people find abhorrent, must be respected if we are to maintain a free society."

Basically, what that is all about is whether businesses should be able to discriminate against black and refuse to serve them, and use race as a criteria to refuse to hire blacks, among other "protected" groups.

Ron Paul believes that a business should be able to discriminate under a "freedom of assocation" rationale, and that the Supreme Court erred in ruling the Civil Rights Act of 1964 constitutional under the commerce clause.

I happen to like the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Accordingly, I'm not interested in voting for a Supreme Court nominator, a person who wants the civil rights act overturned.

If we have to be single issue voters, then this is my single issue. There shall be no return to any Jim Crow.

Timjoebillybob's picture

I think private businesses should be able to discriminate if they so choose. Just like I am able to discriminate against businesses that don't believe as I do. Should I be forced to go to a business that doesn't follow the 2nd amendment as I believe it should be followed? There was a manager who shot a robber this week not too far from me, the store is undecided weather or not to fire him. If they fire him I will not shop at any of their stores, should I be forced to?

At your house, if I were a guest. Should you be forced to allow me to continue being there if I exposed beliefs contrary to yours? How about if I was a vacuum salesman?

Good point. When i write an email to the MSM, it is usually to ask coverage of a neglected topic, like most recently the police brutality at Occupy locations. The media will continue to do everything it can to move the conversation away from the 1%, the bankers, and the Occupy movement, so we must be the ones to keep the conversation going. We are the change we are looking for, and we had better be prepared for the long haul.

Four years later, when the caucus voters in Iowa are poised to give Ron Paul the Republican nod the MSM is going bat shit CRAZY trying to play off the importance of the Iowa caucus vote.

If Mittens or Gingrich were ready to be elected THEN Iowa would mean A LOT!!!!

But not if Ron Paul wins!

One would think, in a democratic Republic, that the "Republicans" would welcome the young of the country who want to wage PEACE, who want a sound ECONOMY, who want LIBERTY AND THE CONSTITUTION PRESERVED, to build up the party!!!!

But NO!!!! The Republicans in Iowa are now intent on counting the ballots of all the caucuses in SECRET!!!

Obama can never take that oath again.

Based on what Romney, Gingrich, Bachmann, Santorum, Johnson and all the others have said I can't see how they could either.

Nor any member of Congress who just voted for the National Defense Authorization Act of 2011!

What is an American to do who wants someone to be the head of our country who actually supports the Constitution?

As I see it right now, that person is Ron Paul. Warts and all.

Really? Like say, the 14th Amendment- ya know, Roe v Wade, Brown v Board of Education, the Voting Rights Act? That's part of the Constitution, ya know. But for four score and nine years, slavery and the 3/5 Clause (before the 13th Amendment was passed). were part of the Constitution, too, no? As I recall, a number of states tried to secede from the Union because the Constitution wasn't being preserved to their liking, and they feared that their liberty to own other humans was being threatened.

.. when corporations, banks in particular, need much more effective regulation.

And when he wants to snip the social safety net, which I think should be enlarged.

And though I agree the Fed should be ended, I doubt we agree on its replacement. He believes money is real. I'm certain it is an invention of the human mind and therefore subject to human regulation.

But on civil liberties and reining in the military, I'm 100% with him.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

MSM

The MSM has been playing us along on false dialogs for quite awhile. The fake dichotomy is best illustrated in the phony debt ceiling comedy played out last summer.

The MSM is going to marginalize anyone that doesn't support unlimited corporate welfare. The largest corporate welfare queens are in the defense sector.

Of course, health is right up there. Ron Paul doesn't offer any corporate welfare for health corporations either.

The answer is to not listen to the corporate media. When a commercial comes on, sponsored by a 1% PAC, change the channel.

Andy K's picture

Abbybwood would have you believe that, but there were more than a few of us in the prog-o-sphere- miss_kitty and myself at C&L in particular- who were sounding the alarms about Paul at this time of the year in 2007.

The truth about Ron Paul is that he's a whack-job states' rights supporter who happens to arrive at the same ends as some progressives, but via an extremely right-wing path. Progressives who decide to throw in with him do so at the very high risk of facing the same sort of situation that the Soviet Union found themselves in after signing a pact with the Nazis to divvy up Poland. What could backfire in a situation like this? Paul couldn't possibly use the platform of the presidency to attack good, longstanding progressive programs, could he?

please explain to me the logic behind busting people for BUI (bicycling under the influence)? I can understand the dangers of driving a 3,000lb vehicle while impaired, but seriously, a 30lb bicycle does not pose the same threat to the public-- why should the penalties be the same? And why should one of the results be the suspension of an impaired bicyclist's driver's license when a d/l is not needed for operating a bicycle? Seems excessively punitive to me.

...but an impaired bicyclist can still cause fatalities on the road other than his or her own, though more likely indirectly than directly.

I still think the penalties should be closer to those for drunk in public than for drunk driving.

From drivers' ed. course. high school years (Canada). Care and control of a vehicle (not necessarily a car), including bicycles, riding mowers, etc. You can get a DUI if you have the keys and appear ready to get behind the wheel, but are not even inside the car yet.

I believe the keys have to be in the ignition (not necessarily running). I remember being homeless and living in my vehicle while I had a suspended license. There wasn't anything they could do to me if the keys were on the floor and not in the ignition (though it pissed the cops off, they couldn't prove I actually drove it ;) )

Don't worry...we'll give him another 4 years to practice saying Barack Obama's name.

i won't click respond to any particular commenter here. That said, anyone who is seriously contemplating voting for Ron Paul ,especially a woman, has lost my respect (not that it matters,I'm sure). Libertarians are other worldly batshit crazy, compared to The Repugs. The world they envision hasn't been around since the Dark Ages. Those folks truely scare me.

is the Barrett-Jackson classic car auction on Speed. The new one is actually next weekend, but if you're not going to buy anything, does it really matter? Great to see cool vehicles that some folks still can afford to restore.

Lots of pretty good deals on Impalas, Camaros, even a AMC AMX all for under $30K.

I'll Tivo it.

These guys point out the differences in paint codes, power options, badges, etc as freely as 'Thugs spout shit from their yap holes. But you get an education, not an evacuation.

Just saw a '64 Galaxie 500 convertible with a dual quad 427 and a 4-speed sell for only $24K.

In Pat's defense, Barack Obama is not an easy name to proounce when you're trying to get your points in fast on McLaughlin like you have to do. I know Pat (not all my friends are leftists) and he sometimes gets names and such wrong a bit like a lot of people over 70. Like, he once brought up the late film critic Pauline Kael to me (she was antipathetic to Nixon, Pat's boss) and called her "The N.Y. Times movie critic". "No, Pat", I said, "She was The New Yorker's movie critic". No big deal.
