So very Beck-ish, don't you think? From the terrific film "Things To Come", 1936. Story and screenplay by H.G. Wells. The whole thing is at YouTube now.

sorry to link whore again, but my friend gil's commercial (for jimmy dean sausages) has made it from a distant third place (by several thousand votes) to a mere 500 votes behind first place (over @ the jimmy dean website)!

pls. help out, simply by clicking the link and watching the spot (and it's quite cute and funny): mr. fog

Did you see my commercial on CNN International a few years ago? Oh! You wouldn't know. Never mind. It was though: all over the world. ;)

Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity et. al. long for the good old days of Preznit Bust and/or Saint Ronnie of Raygun. Such nostalgia should be represented with "The Way We Were". "Mem'ries light the corners of my mind (so much space there) Misty Water Colored Mem'ries of the Way we thought we were".

David Duke's not wanted in the Czech Republic, either. Chrysler actually works things out with its Canadian union. An elderly man fought off car-jackers with his fists. Even rock stars got screwed by the suckonomy.
Kimmy's holding one of our journalists hsotage. Arnie's new low-carbon fuel rule takes effect. Lack of supervision is what led to the Bayer plant explosion.
The Army finally pretends to care about suicides. Detroit's worst flops. Wherefore are thou, Chrysler? Hillary lies about our progress in Iraq, neo-con style. Global warming is shrinking our rivers and destroying France's coastline. Maliki says our last raid violated our pact with Iraq. Businesses benefit from cap-and-trades.

Yes, he belonged to the conservative party. He did not belong to Labour.

So when a right winger or someone tells you about Chamberlain the conservatives better clean their own house first, so to speak.

You know, now that there are only 23% of the country that runs around being scared of their own shadows all the time I gotta say that it's kinda nice!

But please, don't change, we need the lulz.

Cali Dems are divided over Arnie's shell-game-like propositions for the economy. I particularly liked how the Repugs conveniently chose to ask voters to go to the polls the week before Memorial Day, since that means a smaller turn-out of the people who might actually be affected by said propositions. Holder allegedly is close to deciding what to do with the Gitmo detainees.

103 deaths have been reported in mexico with 1600 sick due to the swine flu virus. it's still difficult to say how virulent this virus will be. it's more the immune response of the body more so than the virus itself. for some the immune system can over react filling their lungs with fluid.

Very Beckish indeed. Uncanny even.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Like so many others. And interestingly, as I was flipping channels today, I came across the movie The Oxbow Incident with Henry Fonda. At the end, Fonda's character reads a letter about Conscience... it is well worth hearing. If you haven't read this story, or seen the movie in awhile, or ever...Take some time to do so. It was made in 1943, so it is not flashy like today's movies, but I highly recommend watching it.

The clip of Fonda's monologue is here (but don't watch it if you don't know the story, the clip contains spoilers):

If an interrogator wants to use feathers to torture a prisoner then that appears ok with me. That appears it. Nothing else.

LibertyLover's picture

I always thought that the object of torture was to get cooperation and information from your prisoners. What better way to do that than to treat one prisoner really, really well, giving them extras of everything, and when the others see the special treatment, they will begin to question it.

Then at that point, all the guards would have to do would be to say... you want cigarettes? an extra blanket? more food? then tell us what we need to know. No waterboarding needed and everyone gets to keep their humanity.

As an old adage used to say: "you'll get more flies with honey than you will with vinegar"

I so totally LOVE Humbolt County. I visited it many years ago with a friend. It is the cutting edge. Deny enforcement of the Patriot Act, too??? Love it, love it, love it.
Notice that that 'Librul Media' aren't allowed to touch THAT one either.

However, I just found out today that Rove is coming into my town to give a lecture with David Plouffe. That's an interesting duo. The topic of the lecture "Can the Partisan Divide Ever End?" I just think it's funny that the host of the lecture series invited one of the most partisan hacks ever to live to discuss partisanship.

Part of me wants to try to organize (or maybe find) an anti-torture protest since Rove has been so supportive of it and Plouffe still has the ear of the President and can show him that the only way we as a nation can move forward is by correcting this huge injustice. Thoughts...suggestions?

Torture and American Exceptionalism - http://www.consortiumnews.com/2009/042609a.html
If President Barack Obama refuses to hold the Bush administration accountable for torture, his decision would be the latest example of American exceptionalism, the concept that the United States doesn’t have to operate by the same moral and legal standards as other nations.
News analyst Pepe Escobar examines the dilemma that Obama faces in having released documentary evidence of the Bush administration’s use of torture and then insisting that no prosecutions or other punishments should follow.
Escobar also notes that much of the corporate media and many Democrats also don’t want a serious examination of the torture case because they either were complicit or lacked the moral courage to stand up to these crimes.

And this time, the law has the backing not of a few City Council activists, but of thousands of voters who went to the polls in November. On the same day, voters in Eureka, a historically politically staid city a dozen miles away, surprised everybody by approving an identical measure."

"The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Mr. Obama:

I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.

You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America . You are responsible to the citizens of the United States . You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth.

I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe ? Are you brain dead? What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not understand or know the history of the 20th century?

Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States ? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?

Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia . You don’t show Great Britain , our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia . How dare you, sir! How dare you!

You can’t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation because you don’t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque in Turkey . You offended our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves. What’s the matter with you?

I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you.

You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it.

What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members – on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer. You haven’t said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn’t! Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that's $45 million more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million – not a bad take. Who authorized that and why haven’t you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.

I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all of you. I also want you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful country.

Sincerely,

Every real American"

Beck is only symptomatic of a very, very sick society. No wonder we are hated the world over. We are so polarized now there is no way out. Yes, Beck is like Theotocopulos, but he wouldn't have a chance of getting elected to any office I know of. Loonies don't make it very far in politics. Just ask Tom Eagleton. The disease Beck symptomizes is the No-saying Repubs. They do not want Obama to do anything progressive because it might work, costing them the 2012 White House. The only candidate they have who seems to be a front runner can't even admit that waterboarding is torture. That halfwit fundamentalist bitch from Alaska might admit it, but she hasn't the chance of a snowman in hell of succeeding in a presidential run. Let's face it, the GOP stands for Gone Old Party.
