Some of you know that Barack Obama's Grandmother is not well. C&Lers are invited to send a get well message in the form of a postcard from your hometown (postcards are easiest to deal with) to the Hawaii for Obama office and they promise to forward to Grandma. (h/t commenter Seattle Tammy commenting at Morning Martini.)

Again, postcards are easiest since they don't have to be opened, and the photos from across the country will certainly cheer her up!

I agree. I've used the moniker "Neo-classical secular humanist" since I joind C & L but have revamped it to "Sec_Humanist" because of the truncation of the longer moniker after I registered. I e-mailed John Amato about it but no reply. So it goes. Ironically, if you are not a registered poster -- at least, before today -- your "longer than 13 or so characters" -- appeared on the post header. Makes no sense to me.

"Secular humanism -- a fearless, realistic world view replete with doubt and scepticism that attempts to attain an unachievable state of equilibrium between and among the human qualities of reason, intuition, imagination, memory, ethics and common sense.

Not a big deal to me, but it would be nice to see my entire name, General Jack D. Ripper!

Do you know where I got that moniker from? General Jack D. Ripper was the crazed general played by Sterling Hayden in the classic 1964 movie, "Dr. Strangelove," directed by Stanley Kubrick. Also stars Peter Sellers in 3 roles.

One of my favorite movies ever, and one of funniest I've ever seen.

General Ripper is paranoid about commies. He seals off his military base and starts the process to drop atomic bombs on the Ruskies.

Funny thing is, in real life, Sterling Hayden actually joined the Communist party in this country for a short while.

If you haven't seen the movie, you really should. The scene near the end with Slim Pickens and the bomb is one of the most hilarious I've ever seen.

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

That's one of the best endings to a movie with one of my favorite songs. Although that movie is funny as heck, the song at the end brings tears to my eyes. Guess I'm just too emotional some times.

And in other news, according to an AP poll the race is now a dead heat.

Yeah right, when every other poll else says it isn't. And then the author blabbers on with some garbage about how their pack of lies is somehow valid. AP--the new propaganda arm of the Republicans. What utter bullshit.

It's fascinating to watch the AP melt down. Papers across the country are dropping content from them due to their new pricing structure and I, as well as many others, no longer pay much attention to them because they are so blatantly "in the bag"* for McCain.

But, the poll doesn't make sense on many levels. Here's one example: 45% of this poll's respondents are evangelicals or born-again Christians...

The problem? In 2004, evangelicals/born-again Christians made up 23% of voters. But that same group makes up 44% of likely voters in AP's poll released today. That's almost double the number - it's totally implausible.

...

In 2000 and 2004, there was a very aggressive push for the evangelical vote. In 2000, when the question was asked "Do you consider yourself part of the conservative Christian political movement," 14% of voters said "yes" in exit polls. In 2004, when the question was changed to "Would you describe yourself as a born-again or evangelical Christian?" - the very category AP uses in its current poll - 23% of voters said yes in exit polls.

Did you get that? The percentage of evangelicals/born-agains voting in 2004 was 23%. The percentage of evangelicals/born-agains that AP included in their likely voters scenario is 44%.

Read the whole thing. It's good.

Today, with Brian Williams of NBC, Palin once again brought up her "executive experience" being more than Obama's.

This upsets me to no end. "Executive experience" is overrated. To me, the experience needed to be President includes education, traveling, world knowledge, life experiences, judgment, temperament, and, yes, "executive" experience.

Obama's life experiences include his single mother and his grandmother; he worked hard, was raised well by his mother and grandmother; and HE MADE DECISIONS to get to where he is now.

Palin's "executive" experience means nothing. Look at where Bush and Cheney's executive experience got us.

Obama is a true American hero; he is a very intelligent man; he is a very good man.

Some stuff you can't make up!

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

I saw this earlier today. I wonder, if this is in "God's hands," what if Obama wins? Does that mean God prefers Obama over McCain?

There was a lot of truth in what Rice says, and one of many problems with Republicans, is that they are dumbing down America. Look at Bush; look at Palin.

I like Biden a lot. Sure, he makes gaffes and is known to talk too long, but his life story is impressive, and his speeches are very impassioned....and he makes very good points.

dkmnow's picture

I don't like Biden's record.

Not one bit.

ron's picture

So?

xoites defends Constitution's picture

Specifics? Or are you talking about the whole thing including his second grade report card in that?

dkmnow's picture

I'm not saying I'd prefer McPa'in. Not in the least.

But to name a few:

- he was pining for a "preemptive" attack on Iraq well before Bush took office, and his eventual reversals on the issue seemed far too opportunistic for my tastes.

- his chumminess with the credit card industry has always given me the willies.

- his role the bankruptcy "reform" legislation didn't strike me as so benevolent as was portrayed.

dkmnow's picture

Reviewing Biden's positions on key issues over the years, I see many other points on which I take a very dim view.

In short, from my point of view, he's much too close to the core of DemCorp power, and as a matter of historical inevitability, that kind of power corrupts both the integrity and the judgment of those who wield it. Getting that power out of the hands of the GOP is a necessary first step. But without a massive rollback of corporate power, the step will be wasted. And I just can't see Biden suddenly taking positions that will, in effect, roll back his own power as well.

Rick Street's picture

Commodity prices are all over the map because of the faux global economy. Speculators have extended their slimy hands across continents to the detriment of the citizens in their various nation-states. Currencies have joined the fray since that constitution-trampling miscrant and pathological liar, Tricky Dick Nixon, quashed the 1947 (?) Bretton Woods agreement, a collaborative effort to link Western currencies to the gold standard, in 1974 to try to make the US dollar the standard. Historians may view that cynical move as more malicious and destructive that his butchering the constitution -- Watergate - and his bombing of neutral Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam INVASION.

Tequila's picture

I think the reason it doesn't bother me as much as it did in 2000 and 2004 is that I realize that the Republicans got too fat and lazy to believe that even people in their own base would turn against them. Those previous "victories" were predicated on the idea of the general public being content with the economy and the so-called "tough on defense" reputation the party manufactured. If the current line of Repugs was smart, they'd try to throw us some crumbs, like Reagan and Bush. But they had to get greedy and keep all the wealth to themselves. And as the drug-dealer's moll in Scarface says, "Don't get high on your own supply." So I think we can basically expect a repeat of '06, where Americans throw the bums out in numbers larger than there are machines to keep up with them.

I know we still have to be vigilant, but I must say that this year is still a lot easier than those of the last two Presidential elections. The party's imploding before it can even put up any return-fire. Bush is the Republicans' Carter at this point.[Or should I say Humphrey...?]

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

I was going to flag your comment as inappropriate because it could be offensive to transsexuals!

Yeah, the thing about Karen Hughes is that she is a hard core Bushie, through and through, from Texas. I never could understand how Bush could have hired her back as undersecretary of state for public diplomacy. Her mission was to change foreigner's views of the United States. Well, maybe I can understand....Bush did the appointment.

But to use her to change/improve foreigner's views of the U.S. when she is so much and thinks so much like Bush, and Bush is the problem in foreigner's eyes? That just killed me when he appointed her.

I like that story when she went to Saudi Arabia and spoke with young Saudi female students. She made a comment to the effect that she wished Saudi women could fully participate in society, like they do in the United States. One female student then said, "the perception of the world of us is that Arab women are not happy;" but, she said, "we (Arab women) are all pretty happy."!!!

House GOP leader asks Bush to cut off ACORN funds

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leader John Boehner on Wednesday urged President Bush to block all federal funds to a grass-roots community group that has been accused of voter registration fraud.

"It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law," Boehner, R-Ohio, wrote Bush, saying that funds should be blocked until all federal investigations into the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now are completed.
..
Boehner said his office had determined that ACORN had received more than $31 million in direct federal funding since 1998. He said the group had likely received far more indirectly through federal block grants to states and localities. "Immediate action is necessary to ensure that no additional tax dollars are directed to ACORN while it is under investigation," he wrote Bush.

Boehner said he and other Republicans were also asking the Justice Department to investigate ACORN's connections to the home mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying ACORN "appears to have played a key role in the irresponsible schemes that led to the current financial meltdown."
...

Yup.

The 545 People Responsible For All Of U.S. Woes
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/arti...

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write the tax code. Congress does. You and I don't set fiscal policy. Congress does. You and I don't control monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices - 545 human beings out of the 235 million - are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered but private central bank.

I excluded all but the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it.

No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislation's responsibility to determine how he votes.

of course, obama stepped into it as well when he used the phrase "redistribute the wealth" when he just happened to be talking to the repub plant Joe the fake plumber.

Bangkok Bob's picture

when he was speaking to Obama at length. He was sweating bullets and the rest of the crowd seemed cool. Your right, he did seem like a plant. (poor joe's life is now an open book with lots of dog-eared pages)

I'm just really really really tired of hearing about him, and all the other "Joes".

Nothing makes Amerikkka look brain-dead more than the tone of this election (especially and mostly Palin supporters). (Well, except for "selecting" Bush TWICE!!)

From a dark and stormy Thailand. I look forward to each early evening to come to view the great clips posted here and all your comments.

The one about Chris Matthews and Nancy Puffinfugger (sic) about Palin and the Role of VP. Hilarious. She (Puffinfugger) with all her stick-up-the-but attitude had no clue. He little squeek of "Oh my!" killed me.

When Palin herself speak she does it in that meter that she learned for speaking as a beauty pageant contestant. (Miss S.C. comes to mind, poor dear)

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate being able to come here for my news and views and get a chance to express myself along with you.

BUSTED: John McCain paid $175,000 of campaign money to a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states, it has emerged. - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/u...
The documents show that a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the Republican National Committee and the California Republican Party, made the payment to Lincoln Strategy, of which Mr Sproul is the managing partner, for the purposes of “voter registration”.
"It should certainly take away from McCain's argument," Bob Grossfeld, an Arizona political consultant who has watched Mr Sproul's career closely, told the Huffington Post. "Without knowing anything of what is going on with ACORN, there is a clear history with Mr Sproul either going over the line or sure as hell kicking dirt on it, and doing it for profit and usually fairly substantive profit."

Republicans Set to Wage Intergenerational Warfare on "Entitlement Reform" - http://futuremajority.com/node/3515
On November 5th, when Republicans realize how badly they lost the youth vote, and what that means for their party's future, they will begin to wage intergenerational war over "entitlement reform" of Social Security and Medicare in an attempt to drive a wedge between young voters and the Democrats.
About 44 million young people between the age of 19 and 29 will be able to vote in November, according to a recent Gallup opinion poll. Sixty-five percent of them say they plan to vote for Obama, compared to only 31 percent who plan to do so for McCain.
"I see it as a potential narrative device for the Right to delegitimize an Obama win, oppose a legislative agenda that conflicts with its own, and it lays the groundwork for driving a wedge between Democrats and young voters."

Sarah Palin: The Corporate Welfare Queen from Wasilla - http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/analysis/503
We all know by now that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hates socialism. Unless it's socialism for her family. Palin, who loves painting herself as a self-reliant woman who likes to say, "Thanks, but no thanks" to unnecessary government spending, is always on the lookout for a freebie, even if it means playing it fast and loose with the law. While she ridicules Sen. Barack Obama's plan to "spread the wealth" to people who actually need it, Palin is seeking more of the socialism for the wealthy pioneered by President George W. Bush.

Fracturing: Commenting on a new joint interview with John McCain and Sarah Palin, NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd described the Republican ticket as lacking cohesion, chemistry, and (he hinted) trust. Todd, who was remarking on the interview conducted by NBC's Brian Williams (he was in the room), speculated that the candidates had come to the realization that "they are losing" the campaign, and guessed that McCain may have begun to hold his vice presidential choice responsible for his dwindling White House chances

In some staes I cant wear an Obama t-shirt when I vote but I can be shit faced drunk, does that make any sense? I'll admit that there were times in the past where being drunk while voting could have been a help( think Dukakis), but wearing a shirt with the name of the person I want to vote for is a nono, a very wierd country I live in.

as in the last election i voted , last time for kerry, this time for obama, it was another hold your nose and vote moment, i dont hold out much hope for my country when im forced to vote for the lesser of two evils, mccain is to old to be president and is just a clone of the bushes, after watching obama make a radicle turn to the center instead of being truthful on his promisses of change he votes along with the repigs on most of thier agenda , the patriot act fisa , homeland security , and promises us more of the bush wars on iraq ,afganistan and intrusions into packistan, he thinks just giveing tax breaks to companys to keep them in america will keep them here , but it aint going to happen, thiers more profit in sending them to china and india, no benifits for the workers that they use in other countrys no social securty , no health care no regulations its all profit , thiers going to be no bush criminals going to prison for thier criminal acts on atacking iraq and afganistan , hes even going to use general powell in his administration the butcher of bagdad, vote for obama but dont expect to see your constitution restored to you , with warmongers in charge they need every bit of the advantages the bush gang gave them,

no longer a proud american's picture

i had a nightmare last nite and it disturbed. all along and in the harsh light of day i still believe that obama will win in a landslide and both houses will win the necessary numbers to avoid filibuster. however, my nighmare last night had mc cain raising his hand in victory. all i could think of was another four years of the same disastrous policies that have brought us to the precipice of economic disaster. as long as he continues to promote "winning" in Iraq and bringing our heroes home in a victorious manner then bin laden wins. he will have brought us to our knees, maybe he's done that already.

we need to wipe ourselves clean of any and all who still embrace the bush doctrine. that includes impeachment and a campaign against any of the sponsors of those who would fill the media waves with their lies. Pray that my nightmare never emerges as reality. we need Obama to lead us out or we as country are lost. that's something one-toothed wonder who lives in the heartland really does not understand. it mom, apple pie. the american flag and bring them home in victory so that all those who have already died will not have died in vain.
