Evenin' all...from the frigid midwest...for a few more hours. :-D

Does anyone know about televisions? Plasma's are pretty cheap these days. Should I buy one?

ron's picture

Don't know if plasma the best. Mines a flat screen but I don't think it's plasma.

MsJoanne's picture

Ron, what was the name of that book you told me about? I wanted to pick it up, but I forgot the name.

ron's picture

A political History of American Fascism, 2001-2022. It's interesting to say the least. It really seems like the author was a fly on the wall with some of our recent history.

MsJoanne's picture

I agree...it sounds fascinating and I am looking forward to reading it.

The picture of a plasma set looks great in the store. After a year or 2, the picture gets very soft. LCD sets are better except the blacks are not good.

If you don't watch much TV, a plasma tv is super. They're major power hogs and there are rumblings of longevity problems.

Go LCD.

..another catfood dish around here ranks higher than a new television.

I'll just stick with my old 17" box set until it just don't work no more. Then I'll have one less avenue of pleasure available for me I guess, lol

Truth_Critic's picture

Speaking of cats... I've found with ours, they would rather have standard kibbles vs canned tuna! I thought I'd treat'em too Bumble Bee®, Starkist® or the like, but noticed 2 of 3 go for the crunchy special blend, Friskies® I believe, go figure?

As far as the boob tube, I think you will get positive attributes as well, absent same. I think we'll find, the more we can control our information input the better. I'm not sure what this new digital system is gonna do to TV but these internet tubes our great...

..mainly go for the dried stuff as well. Two out of the four of them like a taste of the smelly stuff once in a while, but I limit them each to a quarter-can serving. Keeps 'em lean and mean.
The feral guy who stops around gets the other half-a-can, but he'll eat anything, long as it's food. I always add a little catnip to his dinner as well, so he's like our resident Jimi Hendrix cat.

I only have a $49 13" POS with rabbit ears. Not worth buying a converter box nor getting cable for it. And too poor to upgrade at the moment.

Sort of having the same conflict with alcohol-- I know I need to cut back, but AA doesn't replace watching football playoffs at a bar with buddies.

Arctic air blasts American midwest, 30-below in some areas Agence France-Presse
Published: Saturday January 17, 2009

Snip - WASHINGTON (AFP) – A record cold snap gripped the American Midwest Friday as temperatures plummeted to lows of minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) and officials scrambled to protect the homeless and vulnerable.

If you can wait 2.5 years, you could get an affordable OLED TV. They are thinner (currently as thin as 3mm...and some people think that they may be able to make them as thin as paper eventually), brighter, more energy-efficient, higher contrast, they have better image clarity, and they are capable of higher frame rates (in case you ever want to attach a computer to the display)....oh, and they should last much longer than either plasma or LCD displays.

...but if you're just interested in helping to stimulate the economy by buying old technology, refer to the link that Truth_Critic provided.

OLEDs are Organic LEDs. You can already buy small OLED TVs, but they are quite expensive since they are still new, but several manufacturers plan to have their OLED factories working at full capacity by 2011.

Here's a tiny one: http://www.jr.com/sony/pe/SON_XEL1/ Note the price.

We had a cloudless day in Seattle today. Calgarylady, careful, you don't want to get heatstroke.

MsJoanne's picture

After I took off. Cloud coverage was low and we broke through in less than two minutes and there it was...bigger than life.

How high is it, do you know off the top of your head?

I think about 10,000.

Hope you are well. 'Tis warm here tonight (about zero). Heatwave!

The image of Barack Obama seems to be the only thing on TV this weekend beside reruns. It is inundating the consciousness of the nation. As S. and I rode along in the car this morning, I thought about all the people we know who have already left for D.C., or are getting ready to leave, and for a fleeting second, wondered if we were going to end up regretting not making our way to Washington D.C. for this historic event.

PETITION!

Quincy Jones was on CNN tonight promoting this idea... which I think is GREAT!

http://www.petitiononline.com/esnyc/petition....

A week ago there were about 70,000 signatures... this morning there are OVER 140,000. This idea is catching on like wildfire. Go on-line and sign it. I can't think of a better way to spend federal dollars than promoting education in the ARTS... and creating a coordinated effort to present American arts and artists to the world. And I also think Quincy Jones would be perfect for the job.

All I can tell you is that everyone I know here in Canada has been referring to Barack as the U.S. President since the evening of Nov 4th, 2008.

Bush and his brood of lowlife hillbillies should've been forced to vacate the White House that night, imo.

estimates, etc. I realize it will be easier done on Tuesday, but I'm guessing someone's got some preliminary figures.

Trust me, as an US citizen, I'm positive that global support has got to be FAR greater than what we saddled the world with for the past 4/5 of a decade. Obama and we thank you for your support.
