Stephen Colbert noticed last night that, when President Obama said he would look for someone with "empathy" to replace David Souter on the Supreme Court, the meme on the lips of all the Villagers (including Orrin Hatch) was that "empathy" was "code" for something -- most often "activist judges."

Wait -- isn't "activist judges" itself just code for "judges who don't rule the way wingnuts want"? Oh well.

In any event, Colbert manages to decode -- via a detour into the Star Trek universe -- the TRUE meaning of that invidious and insidious code word, "Empathy", which produces the anagrams "Meth Pay," "Ape Myth," and "Ham Type":

Which clearly means Obama plans to appoint a drug-addled evolutionist with swine flu.

Sounds as reasonable as anything we've heard from the Village.

Republicans lack empathy. Republicans project this lack of empathy onto all others around them. Republicans detect no empathy around them from others. What then do others mean by the use of the word empathy? It must be code.

To Republicans, "empathy" translates as someone darker than Wonder Bread and/or with a vagina. As Ape-Man notes, they lack the real thing, as is common among sociopaths.

Nothing like parody and sarcasm. Before Stewart and Colbert people took their politicians word. Now it's harder for them to get away with their stupidity. They really point out how dumb politicians think their people are or how dumb they really are. Sure we had our Carlin's but you had to go to a show to see him or get lucky and catch an HBO special. There's no escaping Stewart and Colbert. It's basic cable.

Not to mention how vicious and how big of liars the Limbaugh's are they point out.

is intended to be a factual statement

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

the world lost a great one. Kaptain Kaos himself, Dom Deluise passed away. Forever known as Burt Reynolds sidekick in many, many movies. If there is some kind of afterlife, I'm sure it just got a whole lot brighter!

Here.
And here.

Your links don't lead to Dom Deluise. Interesting reading, though!

Dear Dom, thanks for all of the laughter you gave us. Rest well.

I went to school with his son Peter. His locker was next to mine in junior high. My sympathies to the family.

Peter has done well with his own showbiz career. My condolences to him.

We, as a species, need more empathy. Imagine if Justices in the past demonstrated a little empathy.

This discusses some of the major cases where empathy could have changed history.

http://progressnotcongress.org/blog/?p=731

So if empathy doesn't matter, then could we maybe come up with a computer program/algorithm to decide supreme court cases for us? I mean if it's cut and dry, wouldn't you think we could just come up with a formula to decide all the cases?

If it were as cut and dried as the righties think it is we wouldn't need SCOTUS at all.

That Star Trek clip was classic.

It’s no wonder “empathy” means “socialist” to them. After all, “personal responsibility” is their most favorite codeword, meaning “social Darwinism…”
