The electoral muscle behind the big win: Latinos

We knew beforehand that the Latino vote was going to be a major player in the 2008 election.

And they were:

About two-thirds of Hispanics voted for Obama, decisively surpassing the 53 percent who voted for Democrat John Kerry in 2004, exit polls showed. That year Bush enjoyed a high-water mark of GOP support from Hispanics with 44 percent of the vote from the nation's fastest growing ethnic group.

America's Voice reports in a press release:

  • The Latino Vote Surged in Size: The Latino vote comprised at least 8% of the overall electorate, according to exit polling. This works out to approximately 10.5 million voters, given the expected 130 million votes cast. This figure represents a jump of 3 million voters since 2004, when 7.6 million Latinos cast ballots, and is almost double the Latino turnout of 2000.
  • The Latino Vote Broke Democratic: In 2004, Democratic candidate John Kerry won the Latino vote 56-44% against George W. Bush. Yesterday, Barack Obama won the Latino vote by a 66-32% margin against John McCain, and even won a majority of Latino support in Florida, a former Latino stronghold for the GOP. Given the increased size of the Latino electorate, this means that 2.9 million more Latino votes went to the Democratic candidate compared to 2004.
  • Barack Obama Swept the “Latino Battleground” States: Both the Obama and McCain campaigns focused their Spanish-speaking advertising and outreach on four key battleground states – CO, FL, NM, and NV. Within these states, the Latino vote’s rapid growth and break towards Democratic candidates played an important role in Democratic victories.

CO: The Latino vote in CO grew from 8% of the state’s electorate in 2004 to 17% in 2008. Obama gained support of 73% of CO Latinos – key to his 53-46% victory in the state, as well as the Udall Senate victory.

FL: The Latino vote’s shift towards the Democrats was essential in Obama’s win. FL Latinos broke 56-44% for Bush in 2004 and 57-42% for Obama in 2008.

NM: Latinos comprised 41% of the NM 2008 electorate – a jump from their 32% in 2004. Latinos in NM supported Obama 69-30% -- a big jump from 56-44% support for Kerry. NM Latinos’ trend towards Democrats played a huge role in the Presidential race and in handing the open Senate seat and two Congressional races (NM-1 and NM-2) to the Democrats.

NV: Latinos in NV supported Kerry 60-39% in 2004 and Obama 78-20% in 2008. Latinos in NV also increased from 10% of electorate in ’04 to 16% in 2008, and played a key role in handing the NV-3 Congressional seat to the Democrats.

  • John McCain’s Support Among Latinos Was More Dole than Bush: John McCain’s received just 32% of Latinos’ support nationwide – closer to the Republicans’ low-water mark of 21% support received by Bob Dole in 1996 than the high-water mark of 44% received by George W. Bush in 2004.
  • Voters Broadly Rejected Anti-Immigrant Candidates and Politics: Voters defeated leading anti-immigrant crusaders such as Marilyn Musgrave (CO-4), Thelma Drake (VA-02), Lou Barletta (running for Rep. Kanjorski’s seat in PA-11), and possibly Virgil Goode (VA-5) (race too close to call at press time), and supported candidates with practical and common sense approaches for fixing our nation’s broken immigration system like Dina Titus (taking Rep. Porter’s seat in NV-3), Bill Foster (IL-14), Jim Himes (taking Rep. Shays’ seat in CT-4), Rep. Giffords (AZ-8), and many others. In the Senate, new pro-reform senators include Mark Warner in VA, Jeanne Shaheen in NH, Mark Udall in CO, Kay Hagan in NC, and Tom Udall in NM.

This all happened, as a few news stories noted, because of the Republican brand -- not just the conservative malfeasance in handling of the economy, but most of all the flaming bigotry that the GOP provided a cozy political home for these past several years.

Also, McCain's two-faced strategy was a loser from the outset.

I heard even Dora The Explorer voted for Obama.

She also voted for Preparation 8 in CA and 2 in Arizona.

Twas Xenophobia killed the GOP.

Speaking of numbers and percentages....

Prop 8 passed with not even 5.5 million votes. That's not even a paltry 15% of California's 36.5 million population. I sure am glad the California Supreme Court is going to rule that the initiative was obviously invalid, and the rightwing nutjobs will have to try (and will easily fail) for a "Constitutional Convention" because this is a "revision" and not simply an "amendment".

Too bad nutjobs. Shouldn't have tried the shortcut.

a clause similar to the US Constitution's 14th Amendment. Ya know, the "equal protection" clause. Just wonderin'. Not a Californian here.

With the right candidate, the GOP could make significant gains amongst Latinos. A lot of evangelical Central Americans live in my corner of the rust belt, and if the GOP would quit screaming "illegal" every time they heard Spanish spoken they could easily win back what they lost over the last four years.

gracias latino americanos

This is a good example of how wrong people are when they claim the main stream media is liberal.

How many Latino immigration bashing reports do we get from the msm compared to humane discussions about the issue? Even though the msm would like you to believe that Americans are appalled at illegal immigration the fact is that not only do most people I know not care about it (and I live in a conservative state) but most of the Latino population supports a progressive stance on the issue and they voted for it on Tuesday.

When Barnes and Klondike (or whatever his name is on Fox) start yelling for the Republicans to lighten up on immigration bashing you know somebody is realizing the peril in bashing the largest growing segment of our population.

both lib and wingnuts care about this issue...not to bash latins...you would be surprised at how many latins want the issue dealt with, which includes deportation

the problem is that the gop only points to illegal latins as being the problem...doesnt point to their corporate masters, the union busting that is going on, or the sex slave trade

the repugs used it as a wedge issue...they dont care about people or businesses

i want those here illegally deported...i also want the businesses who hire them fined and their owners jailed...i want a massive crackdown on the sex slave trade...did you know that up in sf, they just busted a chinese crew that had girls as young as 12 doing tricks???? this is america...not a 3rd world country...prob is, because the girls are illegal, they are scared into silence, as in the past, they are the ones treated as criminals

and look...they have an illegal problem in the southern states too...where they bring them in to bust unions...like that plant in missippi...and then mccain says, "they do the jobs americans will not do" those guys were working alongside legal american workers, doing the exact same jobs...but being payed a hell of alot less...with no benefits

oh...and now that mccain is no longer running for prez, im gonna call him about the lettuce picking job for 50 an hour

This comment is why I come to Crooks & Liars......to learn.

I support all you have said.

Oh, and good luck with that job! ; )

I don't think you can blame the illegal immigrants for being here. Who you should blame is the businesses and people who hire them and use their services. Blame the agricultural industry (although your food prices will go up), blame the construction industry (although your housing prices will go up), blame the people that use them to pick up their leaves and cut their grass and plant their flowers, etc., etc. etc.

The illegal immigrants would not be here if they could not make money or no one would hire them. There are plenty of Americans to blame for the reason the illegal immigrants are here.

I personally do not have a problem with illegal immigrants. I think they play a very valuable and useful economic role. Just like it has always been the case through the history of this country. Whether it was the illegal Irish or Germans that were in this country a century ago.

Lou Dobbs killed the Republicans.

Hmmmmm. Now that xenophobia no longer pays political dividends, the only thing left that the GOP has to offer its nutjob base is HOMOPHOBIA. The fear that their own secrets will be exposed.

We need to defeat the last GOP bastion of bigoted intolerance that still gets political traction in this country (outside of the GOP wack job base).

latino/latina voters!

the clintonistas insisted that the hispanic voters could not overcome racist views towards blacks and vote for obama...should never have underestimated his impact

the only group that didnt vote for obama were the toothless rednecks...and im still surprised they can figure out how to vote

oh...huffpo has some great vid of faux news helping to toss palin under the bus...with loofa boy attempting to be her protector

amazing, loofa boy couldnt get an interview alone with palin, mccain had to be there...but loofa boy would have none of that...i dont think the mccain team was afraid that the perv would ask tough questions, i think they were afraid that he would ask to sniff her panties

Billo wanted a phone interview. He likes talking on the phone much more than face to face.

Si Si Puede!

Can we build a fence around the RNC?

I agree and the MSM hasn't even noticed yet. The Latino vote for Obama was even more important than the votes of us "Anglos" and not only for putting him well across the finish line. I can remember not too long ago when there was a competition between the black and Latino populations, maybe a falsely created one to divide and conquer.

I think the Republicans will become more anti-immigrant or anti-minority. White males are losing their power and stature and they will complain more. This is good for the Democrats, as not only is the Latino vote increasing, but the anti-immigrant message from the Republicans is likely to grow louder.

I think the Democrats can make gains in Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada more permanent because of this. Also, Arizona looks like the next one that could fall.

The Republicans shrinking tent really hurts them and will hurt them more in the future. The latino vote is now too big and too powerful to be ignored.

us Hispanics.

Chicanismo=progressive
Hispanic=republican
latino=independent

And Emmanuel is an ass!

As a Cuban-American with many relatives in Miami/Dade, the influx of Columbians, Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, etc., have completely superceded the Republican Cubans since most other latino groups are left-leaning. The only really Republican areas of Florida are the panhandle, and the tiny, aging population of Cubans in Dade County--all the rest are spread out too far to make a difference.

All I can say is how relieved I am that the aging population of Cubans is losing its influence. I don't like them to be able to dictate foreign policy anymore than I like the way Utah Mormons have influenced prop h8te in California.
