Rep. Paul Broun, R-GA, was on Fox and Friends yesterday touting his proposal to have Congress officially designate 2010 "The Year of the Bible", and he had an interesting rationale for it:

Broun: Well, it's all about freedom, actually. The Bible was the basis of our laws, it was the basis of the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence -- the Bible was the founding source.

Hmmmmm. Well, some of us have heard otherwise, but OK, whatever.

You may remember Rep. Broun. Last November he won lots of friends on both sides of the aisle and in the White House when he warned that Obama was preparing a Hitler-like dictatorship with his civilian-youth-corps proposal: "That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did ... When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

Broun is, of course, asking President Obama to issue this proclamation. And what will Obama achieve by issuing it?

Broun: The Bible was the basis of our nation. And as we look to the future, and as we deal with our economic problems, as we're stealing our grandchildren's future, we need to look at the principles that were taught Biblically. When our Founding Fathers established this country, they established it on freedom. That's what the Bible teaches. Every single one of our laws are based on the Biblical precepts. And we need to turn back to those precepts if our country's going to be strong and great again.

It's absolutely critical for us to understand what freedom's all about, what our own responsibility is all about, and what government's function within our society is supposed to be. And we have forgotten that in Washington. We are heading down a road that's going to destroy our nation. We are headed toward a total government control of everybody's lives -- a loss of freedom, a loss of our money, a loss of our private property -- and it's extremely critical now for us to go back to those foundational principles that this country was founded upon.

That's the reason a proclamation of "The Year of the Bible" will help people understand what the importance of those, um, principles are all about as we go forward to make our nation secure, free, and great again.

Oh. OK. So you want President Obama to issue this proclamation so right-wing nutcases like yourself can hijack the entire text of the Bible to promote your teabagging brand of politics. Whose entire purpose is to undermine the agenda of both the president and the Democratic Congress.

Right. Well, lots of luck with that, Rep. Broun.

You can't make this stuff up.

Why not a year of philosophy?

Religion's included under theology.

plenty of stuff in Dubya's End Times beliefs for Cheney to exploit politically. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Actually the basis for most legal systems is the Law Library of Hammurabi and Roman Civil law. Common Law came from Pagan Germanic tribes.

About the best Christian law gave us was trial by ordeal, and special classes of law: blasphemy and heresy.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

The basis for Christianity itself comes out of the groups you mentioned, and quite a few more.

and it's extremely critical now for us to go back to those foundational principles that this country was founded upon.

Like expansionism, land grabbing, and the genocidal extermination of the original inhabitants.

In that version, Jesus of Rothschild is born of sturdy blue blooded stock in a bank vault, goes to Andover and Yale, then begins his life's work: stoning adultresses, beating the shit out of the lepers, berating the poor, making a handsome cut from the tax-collectors, gaining dominion over the world through a slick deal he worked out with Satan, killing the sick by denying them health insurance, feeding the rich, clothing the powerful, giving shelter to the privileged (in his father's house there are many mansions), pissing in the wine, shitting on the water, drinking blood and eating bodies, generally prosletyzing his way around the speaking circuit and finally performing his greatest work, crucifying the poor on a cross of gold and sending them to hell.

No??

Evangelicals are the bullies and hypocrites who believe the earth is 6,000 to 10,000 years old despite it being 4,500,000,000 years old. The "rationalization" that the word "day" may not mean 24 hours is an admission that the bible IS NOT a literal document, but one that is literally dependent on the reader's subjective/biased interpretation rather than a verbatim dissemination of "god's words" or his intentions.

It's amazing that fundamentalists who claim to base their values on the words in a book pick and choose which words ARE and ARE NOT to be interpreted literally/factually.

Why should a book that has been translated numerous times from numerous languages by numerous fallible human beings over a period of more than 2,000 years be necessary as proof of and or a justification for one's moral values? When faith itself is completely ethereal, why do so many people base their religious values on the written word?

The majority of people who place so much emphasis on a bible DO NOT practice ALL the values in that bible nor do they project the grace and tolerance of an enlightened believer. Where in any interpretation of any bible does it suggest that god wants people to use his words as a political weapon or litmus test?

The "faux Christians" who do that aren't just misinterpreting words; they are perverting the spirit and intent of religion into a political/cultural sword borne of sacrilege and evil.

I've got all that I listed previously, plus I've got tons of books on history - different time periods, ethnic histories, women's history; I've got my feminism books, poetry collections - Plath, St. Vincent Millay; tons of dictionaries, several books in Spanish and German, anthropology and psychology, several books with photos of the art and artifact holdings of major world museums, Complete Works of Shakespeare, and of course, tons of how-tos on crafting, and a ton of cookbooks. Plus all the stuff that I have stored away that I can't remember off the top of my head.

P.S. - If there are ANY Georgians that aren't dumb asses...you need to move out of Georgia.

I was born in Georgia but escaped when I was a kid. I think by now the taint has been done away with....I sure as hell hope so.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
