Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.
Now I guess we know why Joe is telling the press that Obama is a "socialist" and that the Obama tax plan "infuriated" him. After all, it would hit families like the Keatings and their minions the hardest.
Not to mention that Obama's economic-recovery plan would put the crimps on influence peddlers like McCain's old friends, the Keating Five.
But he sure made for a good one-day story.

A lot of people are familiar with S&L crook Charles Keating's illegal contributions to John McCain in the 1980s. What most don't know, however, was that Keating was implicated in the BCCI takeover of a number of S&Ls, including his own. With me, so far?
Carl Lindner, an Ohio billionaire with CIA and underworld connections who owned Chiquita Bananas, was Charles Keating's original partner, banker, and mentor. Lindner got Keating wrapped up with schemes involving the usual cast of BCCI characters, shady Saudi bankers, the Bush family, and Iran-Contra money laundering. Keating was always a sort of pass-through guy, without any real money of his own. But, a lot of money flowed through Keating to McCain and his wife, Cindy, in an Arizona real estate scam. Lindner who was recently convicted of financing Right-wing death squads in Colombia, is still giving big, dirty campaign checks to McCain. Now, that's a story that the American people need to hear.

Get an accountant.
Incorporate your business.
Structure your income to be less than $250k.
Structure your net profits to the corporation to be less than $250k by using the deductions of your employees, parts, expenses and other business deductions.
Then you're making $500k a year and you're rich, Joe.
And if you can't do that, then you're a very bad businessman and should work for someone else, or just suck it up big boy and pay your fair share of taxes.
Show the proof are it isn't true.

Look at the each candidates records and vote according to that. An example is Obama is surrounded by corrupt people even before he went into office (aka slum lord Tony Resko, Rev Wright, and Ayers(American terrorist)). McCain made a bad move about 20 years ago when he listened to some lobyists and go hauled into Congress about that matter (fortunately, for him, he was acquitted and was said that he should of never been brought forth to Congress about the matter). In all honest, I did like Obama at first, but after researching him, I such saw a guy that was so deep in corruption and surrounded himself with people that hated America that it disgusted me. It was very apparent that Obama's family wasn't pro-America when I heard his wife say that she was proud for the first time in her life that she was American (this was during the democratic nomination). Anothering that turned me off to a democratic president is that the democrats are in control of Congress and if Obama becomes president, there will be no checks and balances.

After reading the above posts I noticed that there are two things going on. One is someone trying to make a point, and one who hates the points being made, but doesn't know how to put the person down by disproving the facts. So they attack the person instead of making a good factual fight. Honestly, I agree with the Democrats vs Republicans person (even though they have horrible spelling). Who ever puts forward a some what sound argument and considering how the country was run with Bush in office with a Republican congress then think about having the same situation all over again. 'Joe' was a plant: he's not a plumber, he's a registered republican, and he's part of the family that helped McCain get his foot in the door at the ground level of dirty politics. He was a setup: yet Obama treated him with respect, courtesy, and dialogue.

The truth is the Joe would be better off under Obama's plan: he wouldn't be taxed any more then he would be under McCain's plan, his employees would have healthcare(and better yet preventative health care, so they'll get sick less often), and the people in his community would have more money, so they could *afford* to hire Joe.
That's the reason most of America is supporting Obama: hecause he's smarter, he understands the middle class, and he wants to keep our mothers from having to argue with insurance companies while they die of cancer, as his mother did.

In this case, McCain ostensibly acted like a plant, or at any rate a Republican operative pretending to be an independent, was in fact an unaffiliated voter, and in the process misrepresented who this guy was, when people on the campaign already knew he was related to Keating. This is a simple lie. The association is not the problem. It's up to McCain if he wants to further tie himself to the scandals of his past; the problem is that his campaign knowingly misrepresented campaign theater as the truth. This has become a calling card of McCain's campaign, and the republican party in general.

I checked out the previously published business profile of JTP's employer--Newell Plumbing is composed of 2 members, both unlicensed*, Joe's employer, Newell, and Joe. The annual estimated sales are 100K. Joe has now stated publicly that he earns 40k per year and also that he has had no concrete plans, nor has he made any efforts, towards acquiring the business. Given these FACTS, it is hard to come to any conclusion that JTP is anyone but a plant. (I'm not sure about a relationship with Keating--that is likely spurious. I doubt the Keating clan move in Joe's social class--and this is just an observation based on my own experience with mingling with the upper tier.)

This $hit always backfires. What we witnessed last night at the debate was McCain using 20 year old tactics in a 21st century debate. The old "slash & burn" sarcastic tactics fell totally flat; in fact, they worked against him. The split screen showed all of american that McCain's not only dangerous to this country at this time but perhaps that the rumors of his insanity and creeping metastasis of his invasive melanoma may be affecting his brain. His facial muscles surely weren't under his control. Evidently, he's not only clueless about middle america's ability to fact check his lies and smears, he's clueless about split screen television, obviously.

Does any of this make Joe the Plumber a bad guy? Of course not. In fact, after that ill-fated night at the Watergate, he may finally be giving plumbers a good name. But at a debate where John goes full bore on Obama for guilt-by-association with William Ayers (and dodges a bullet by Obama not mentioning Keating Five), the press is going to bring it back front and center by midday tomorrow once they delve deeper into the most popular plumber in America.
This might remind you of the Paris Hilton scandal - where one side of the McCain campaign attacked her in an ad, not realizing that her family were huge donors. I was the first to warn the campaign of the perils of miscommunication within the campaign, and that story flared for a week.

Also, you seem to misconstrue my point. Assuming Joe the Plumber is on the up and up, then the Obama tax plan imposes just $900 more in taxes on his $280,000 a year income. That's hardly a great burden to place on a guy who's making that much money, especially when you consider that this country is running a half trillion deficit this year.

Granted, I live in Bergen County, NJ, but the three plumbers I personally know in my hometown each have vacation homes on the Jersey Shore, and their wives all drive luxury SUVs (two Lexus LS-series; one Land Rover).
Plumbing in the age of the real-estate bubble (1999-yesterday) was fueled by HELOC-powered 100k kitchen makeovers and $30k bathroom renovations. It's become a very lucrative field. Heck, I cannot get a plumber to visit my dumpy house unless I've got at least $500 worth of work..

My last car, prior to my new little Honda Fit, was a Lexus SUV, so it hit me immediately that 'their wives all drive luxury SUVs (two Lexus LS-series; one Land Rover)' ( The Land Rover, a piece of c--- if there ever was one and hardly a luxury car, unless living in a repair shop is your idea of luxury). Anyway, all of the Lexus' SUV lineup have an X in their model name. The LS-series is a sedan. If you want to try to substantiate something, it would help to know what you're talking about.
Re plumbers making decent money--when I interviewed for an MBA at Wharton there were other applicants who told me they were tired of making less than a plumber in their respectable but underpaid positions. Plumbers can do quite well, but there are highly competent plumbers and then hacks who do a little plumbing because they know a little. One look at JTP and it's clear he doesn't have it together enough to be contemplating purchasing a business netting him 250K as an individual. He might start by getting licensed, so he wouldn't have to pay someone else--and on 40K a year, he doesn't have the chops to dream about paying a licensed plumber and still clearing 250K. McCain acting as if Obama's plan was preventing this poor Everyman from adding more jobs to the economy was pathetic, given the facts.
P.S. I used to live in Ridgewood but now live in the Pacific Northwest. I trust all those 100K kitchen makeovers weren't rolled into home financing in Bergen County...?, and, as another poster mentioned, there may not be quite so much lucrative work going around right now. You might mention to your friends that they may want to trade in their SUVs if they're not too deep into the negative, if the dealers will still accept them. (Lexus does make a great car, and I'd have held onto mine if circumstances were different, sigh.)

And excellent work it was. I'd forgotten about it when I cited him. But I'm digging around and think there probably is a family connection there, so the information so far appears accurate. If nothing else, we can get the media to ask the question.
However, I agree that this is a distraction -- except to the extent that it brings up the Keating Five thing again, not to mention how it reflects on McCain's judgment in leaning so heavily on "Joe" in the debate.
Thanks, David. It's really surprising to me how little traction the Keating 5 scandal has gotten. Still, I'm hoping the left blogosphere doesn't get too sucked into this Joe the Plumber thing. The media narrative has been set and it will be hard to change unless there's a photo somewhere of McCain handing him cash. But I think his media cycle will be over rather quickly. Britney Spears is bound to do something that'll knock him off the media's pedestal.
Personally, I'd like to see Obama find a "Joe the Army veteran" to talk about how McCain has consistently screwed vets. ;)

This unfolding story is mind boggling for me. I am almost lost for words. Is it stupidity on Joe, McCain and his handlers' part, or do they really have such low opinions of the intelligence of the American media and/or people? Having this opinion for a portion of the Media I can understand, but enough already of deceit, lies and trickery.

As soon as McCain brought this guy up, I found it deeply suspicious that he new the guys full name. I thought, "this guy is a mole." It's interesting to find out that he was most likely an implant at Obama's rally for just this reason. To give McCain the opportunity to use someone at Obama's events in dissent of Obama's views, and have them portrayed as undecided. How sloppy to use someone with relation to Keating. If I were Obama, I would have my talking heads out there pushing the fake that this guy was, and relate that the hard working Americans that are actually undecided should not stand for such deceit from McCain.

It seemed like "Joe" got mentioned a lot last night during the debate. McCain also made a big deal about this guy/story. So, to be fair, Obama and the media should make a big deal about the real Joe.
Now I didn't see all of the debate, but it looked like Obama was letting McCain off easy. Was there ever any mentioning of Keating? Obama said nice things about Palin, never mentioning she directly says "pal around with terrorists". Meanwhile McCain was totally negative about Biden.
We've seen it before, haven't we? In the shell-shocked faces of inappropriate and nervous gesturing which characterize post traumatic stress syndrome. This is precisely what we watched John McCain do for 90 long, painful minutes. Instead of looking presidential, he looked like he was auditioning for a soap opera as the "local schizophrenic". How sad for someone who has worked so hard to build a reputation of credibility and honor in this country that he goes down in flames - of his own doing.
No one can help John McCain at this point. He's become a "merchant of sleaze" and has lost the respect of the american people. We forgave him for his diabolical actions in the Keating Five Scandal but that's as far as it goes. What he has done this past week in outing his overt racism and bigotry will never be forgotten; in fact, John McCain has become "hate's new poster boy".
He needs anger management counseling. this was obvious - painfully obvious to anyone who watched the debate. His "old biddy" concept of destroying your opponent harkens directly back to his "good guys/bad guys" of his vietcong incarceration.....Senator "Government" and my "fellow prisoners".
It's a good thing that Schieffer didn't jangle the change in his pocket or McCain might have strangled him on the spot.
Clearly, John McCain's glory day are over. John McCain, broken battle-axe of a man with marked dementia and facial tics beyond his control has gone down again in flames.
What we witnessed last night was the shooting down of his plane over Vietnam all over again.
