Republicans seem to have picked a meme for fighting the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court: She's a racist!

It's on all the wingnut tongues. We had Tom Tancredo spewing this line on The Ed Show yesterday -- yeah, the same Tom Tancredo who once sang "Dixie" with the members of a white supremacist organization, and whose entire presidential candidacy was built on bashing Latinos.

You could kinda see where this was going then.

Sure enough, the rest of the Right's leading Racial Sensitivity icons -- Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter and Pat Buchanan -- all were singing the same chorus: "She's a raaaaaacist!"

Limbaugh: The infamous Donovan McNabb incident is only the tip of his lengthy race-baiting record.

Beck: The guy who likes to link Latinos to crime and hyperventilates about Mexican crime regularly.

Coulter: The woman whose new book soft-pedals the existence and activities of white supremacists.

Buchanan: The man whose recent books have been rehashings of old white-supremacist eugenics from the early 20th century, fretting about white privilege being overturned by an evil brown tide.

Coulter's a classic case of this: As Diane Sawyer tried to get her to talk about the upside of seeing a Hispanic woman nominated to the Supreme Court, Coulter dourly refused, pouting that liberals hadn't done the same for Clarence Thomas or the execrable Miguel Estrada.

Yeah, those are just ideal people to be leading this charge for Republicans.

UPDATE: Newt Gingrich joins the parade. He fits right in.

Projectionists!
The lot of 'em!

No doubt.

“Sotomayer is a drug-addled hypocrite who crams the radio-waves with bigotry and discredited GOP talking points. She is a big fat pox on the anus of the American ideal, struggling to reduce her listeners to zombie zealots who can be led around by their ignorant ignobly.“ – Is that enough projection for ya there Rush?

This isn't projecting at all. This is just plain ol pissing off the enemy.

This is a bunch of spoiled white kids circling a lone black guy, pushing him around and making him feel like he could be killed at any moment so he'll lash out wildly, so those kids can then joke up about how them boys really are like wild animals.

This is about mocking a woman until she snaps, then joking that she must be on the rag.

They know they're racists and they don't have a problem with it. But they know WE have a problem with them. So anything they can say to rile us up is comedy gold for the people who brought you "the 1/2 hour news hour" and "red eye with greg gutfield."

By all means, point out how stupid they sound; it's important. But don't for a second believe that THEY believe this nonsense they spew.

but while I can't say any of it is untrue...I believe that they do believe at least some of it, to a degree...why else would they be saying it to begin with?

$400 million dollar contract to keep the natives riled up?!!

They need to think everyone else is as mean spirited as them. They need to believe that everyone else is racist, and this lets them fool themselves some more.

The real racists are these well known racists calling her that. They are so scared of diversity they want to try to shame her in having any ethnic pride. Ethnic pride in the Queen or Israel is fine with these assholes, so let her be proud of her culture. They project their faults on others. Major projection, as usual for the Reptilian mind.

...watch what we say. To these hopeless bigots, racism only exists when the white racists anoint it as such.

Does Rush look like a Weeble...or more like an older version of the blowup autopilot from "Airport!"?

... he has a much smaller stem than Otto Pilot.

)O(

I'd do Julie Haggerty.

.

I'd do Robert Hays.

I'd have to go with Otto Pilot. Weebles wobble, but the don't fall down. Rush falls flat on his face every time he opens his mouth.

I love KO and company for the bobbing junkie on the screen every time Fats' name is mentioned.

Laughter is a great stress reliever.

feckin heeelarious innit?
To me, that shows the world how self important, yet extremely insecure that pathetic schmuck really is.

I thought it was funny at first, and then I looked at his eyes while he's doing it -- they are beyond sad ... bordering on dead. Now I find it pitiful and creepy.

I was just reading an article on MSNBC about this.

on one hand, they've shrunk their base so badly that the only participants are, for the most part, super angry super fringe super white Christian types. these voters are the most fickle and will leave the GOP brand for the "Constitution" party, or libertarianism at the drop of a hot. presidential and major senatorial elections are still pretty much a done deal, with the remaining GOP customer base, but local elections could quickly go to some weirdo supremacist type destined to lose to the local Democratic candidate.

so on one hand, the GOP *HAS* to openly denounce this nominee for being a woman and a foreigner, and still aspiring for great things.

but on the other hand ... well ... the GOP's customer base has shrunk. so if they openly denounce Justice Sotomayor for being a woman and a foreigner, and still aspiring for great things ... they run the risk of further alienating the female vote, the hispanic vote and the "level headed nice white guy centrist type" vote.

its such a shame that such a nice, nice party built this awful catch-22 dilemna for themselves. ;)

Rush Limbaugh doesn't understand the definition of "reverse racist".

racism is bigotry of someone because of their race. if I say "I don't like black people because they're all crooks" thats racism, pure & simple.

switching the color from white to black though, doesn't make it "reverse racism". if I travel to the "black" part of town, and black people scowl at me and my son and call us "honkies", thats not "reverse racism" ... thats still just good ol' fashioned racism.

"reverse racism" is when super liberal white suburban types say "well, we have to make our public school courses easier in rural minority communities because black people can't read as well as white people, so its our job to help them..." - that's reverse racism.

if my black friend says "lets play a game of basketball but we'll make sure you just do the passing or 3 pointers because white men can't jump and I don't want anybody to make fun of you" ... that's reverse racism.

what Rush is accusing Justice Sotomayor of, is not "reverse racism" but merely, simply, "racism". - I also think he's wrong. I mean, unless someone wants to spell it out for me, I haven't really heard any significantly racist anti-white-guy tirades from her, like, at *all* - but just thought I'd put it out there. he's mis-using the phrase "reverse racism".

when a man doesn't even understand the definition of the words and phrases he's using in his rants, he's ill qualified to rant about topics surrounding those words and phrases for hours on end.

Interesting points.

The comment these nuts are cherry picking is not racist. It's fact. A female Latina from Brooklyn has a different perspective than a white male and more qualified than that male in certain circumstances. Would you trust a rich white female to work at an inner city Boys and Girls Club or a Black Female who knows the life.

It's pretty simple to see what her comments really meant. All they're doing is twisting that onecomment and calling her names. Calling her a racist at that. It's purely insulting but I would expect nothing less from the likes of Rush and Newt. I hope she's thick skinned and was prepared for these idiots.

all the scenarios you offered racist, this is my definition of reverse racism: when you commit racism in a effort to stop it. Kinda like the New Hampshire firefighter case.

The one case you mentioned is borderline. ""reverse racism" is when super liberal white suburban types say "well, we have to make our public school courses easier in rural minority communities because black people can't read as well as white people, so its our job to help them..." - that's reverse racism." That is racist, stating that black's cannot read as well is simply racist, hiring a black person who does not perform as well as a white simply because he is black to fulfill a quota or keep equality is reverse racism, if you hired him because of personal prejudice that would be racism.

ETA and actually Rush did say racist, but followed with reverse racist to soften it.
"“Here you have a racist — you might want to soften that, and you might want to say a reverse racist,”

that reverse racism is the same as racism. How does the word "soften" enter into it?

it because that is what he said.

I know you hate to admit it, and you've consistently refused to admit it all along.

The decision in the New Haven case was not decided based on the race of any of the participants. The court had thrown out the test, just like they've thrown out similar tests in similar cases for years.

Any test that is used in hiring or promotions must be demonstrated as pertinent and relevant to the job itself. The hiring company or agency must be able to prove the relevance of the test as a deciding factor.

In this case, just like similar cases before it, the court determined that the test does not meet the criteria, and so the use of the test must be thrown out.

The court didn't say enough black men didn't pass, so you can't use it. The court didn't say that black candidates had to be given extra points, or had to be promoted despite their test scores.

They simply said that New Haven had to use a fair promotional process based on demonstrated ability, not an irrelevant test.

That's not racism, or reverse racism.

read the appeals court ruling or the SCOTUS verbal arguments? They didn't argue the test, they argued that they didn't violate title 7 when they threw the test out because they didn't promote anyone. If you don't promote anyone how can it be racist. They didn't find the test to be non-pertinent or irrelevant. They (the town) threw the test out because they were afraid of a title 7 suit if they did not promote any blacks. Which was mentioned in the SCOTUS hearing by one of the justices as "damned if you do and damned if you don't"

You make good points, but I wanted to take issue with your examples. Assuming black people can't read as well as white people is regular racism. The black friend not letting the white friend play basketball fully is (very mild) racism. The subject with the racist thought may be trying to help, but the assumption is still negative.

If there is a proper way to use "reverse racism", it's for attempting to reduce the impact of hundreds of years of oppression by allowing for the fact that on average, life is harder if you're not white. If one kid with two college-educated parents gets an 1100 on his SAT after taking it three times and going to Kaplan prep sessions, whereas another kid whose parents started working straight out of high school could only afford to take it once and has been working a part-time job since was 15 might only get a 1070. The kid with the 1100 may have the higher number, but which is the greater accomplishment?

So I ask you this: if a conservative calls liberals reverse racists, and if conservatives are the reverse of liberals, what does this make the conversative?

take the SAT 3 times now? When I was in school it was a one shot deal.

backing up the racist charge?

... a statement made by Sotomayor in 2001:

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion (as a judge) than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

opinion in the New Hampshire firefighters lawsuit.

of the lower court that had already ruled against the TEST, not the MAN.
That argument is a non-starter.

Seriously. Unless white men are really minority women, disguised as white men, how can they know what Hispanics, women, and or any minority for that matter, experience in every day life?

The only thing I gleen from her statement is that because she has a more diverse background, in both social and economic situations, she can speak more to the experiences of the average middle and lower class American, than the white guy who grew up in the suburbs, went to the finest schools that mom & dad could buy, and was made CFO of dad's company right after graduation (which pretty much defines much of the GOP).

Seems to me that if this is what the GOP is going to hammer on, they've got NOTHING ELSE.

If the Right is so lame, so predictable (particularly when their talking points are leaked) and such obvious bigots and contrarians... why isn't the Left better at responding to them?

The "left" is being defined by the Clintonites of the Party, and they are merely a "Democratic" extension of the corporate elite.

The TRUE leftists in the party are pussies. They are selling TRUE progressives out by not raising hell, in order to protect their seats at the table.

Keep having the Right Wing-NutO racists and bigots on TV and radio to prove once and for all what the GOP truely stands for, HATE and Intolerance.

Tancredo was invited by a new right-wing, racist organization, Youth for Western Civilization (YWC). Who is YWC? Their mission statement says they work “to create a culture that will promote the survival of Western Civilization and pride in Western heritage.” Compare that to the Ku Klux Klan, who say they are a “white rights political organization working to promote western Christian civilization.”

Mission statements certainly sound similar to me.

He supports the ICE concentration camps that are crammed with hundreds of thousands of undocumented workers, denied any kind of due process or basic rights.

the NAACP, BET, Jet and Ebony magazines. All promote the black culture and heritage. Are they wrong to do so? How about La Raza? Or is it only wrong when a group promotes the white culture and heritage? No I'm not defending the KKK, or the neo-nazi's. But if a person started up a TV station or magazine that specifically targeted whites and announced that that is what they were doing, lets say White Pride TV or Ivory magazine I guarantee that there would be a massive uproar over it.

And for the "concentration camps" I prefer a quick trial to prove that they are in the country illegally and then deportation, if they have children that were born in this country, they have a choice take them with, or place them with a family that is here legally or give them up for adoption.

I have no problem with legal immigrants period, illegals are a different story, I don't care what color skin they are or religion etc. they are here illegally and should be deported.

"But if a person started up a TV station or magazine that specifically targeted whites"

Really?? Seriously? Was there ever a time in this country when whites were relegated to second-class citizenship? Forced to sit in the back of the bus? Told they couldn't eat at the counter of the local diner? Ever denied a job because one was 'too white'?

And, when HASN'T tv been geared towards white people? There was a time when shows had nothing BUT white actors; magazine's contained pictures of nothing BUT white models; Madison Avenue's advertising was nothing BUT white people gearing products to the white consumer.

"Really?? Seriously? Was there ever a time in this country when whites were relegated to second-class citizenship? Forced to sit in the back of the bus? Told they couldn't eat at the counter of the local diner? Ever denied a job because one was 'too white'?"

Or told they had to sit in the white section (i.e. worst part) of a movie theater. Hint for Tim: my continuation of Veronica's examples come from my family background. The town I live in had a theater that was segregated for people of color, including my very Mexican-American grandparents, as late as the late 1940's.

Until someone can come up with truly equivalent examples to this, any sympathy shown by me to disgrunted white Republican men will merely be sarcastic crocodile tears!

answered my question, which was to simplify, why is it okay for minorities to promote their culture and heritage but when a caucasian does, it automatically means their racist? And do you think it would be okay for a company to start up a TV station that was "for whites, by whites"? If not should BET be shut down?

Way back when, the Irish and Germans were treated as less valuable, or desirable than slaves.
But I totally understand where you're coming from, and I agree.

Projection mixed with hypocrisy. Staples of how the right debates issues.

... conflating empathy (I understand your anger) with sympathy (I feel the same anger you do).

Empathy is among the lessons of Jesus Christ: do unto others as you would have done unto you.

We also see this when he tells the crowd, 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone' - but neither does he send the adulteress off with a kiss and a hug: he tells her to go forth and sin no more.

The lesson of empathy is repeated again when he warns us to, '... judge not, lest ye be judged and in the same measure.'

For these reasons, empathy is key to other virtues, such as mercy and justice.

However, empathy was not part of the character of George W. Bush, who mocked Karla Faye Tucker's conversion while on Texas' death row, as well as laughing at the plight of our soldiers.

and even sympathy in the lower courts, but when SCOTUS is viewed as determining the constitutionality of law, and is used in determining federal and state law. Empathy and sympathy have no place, it should be a strict legal view. Just because a Supreme court justice can understand and/or feel sorry for the person in front of them, should not effect the outcome of the case.

)O(

The person wouldn't be in front of the court, but perhaps their lawyers.

The Supreme Court doesn't hear new evidence, they review the law, how the law was interpreted, how the jurors were instructed, that sort of thing.

It also reviews laws with various interpretations but a pastiche throughout the nation.

And equity law involves new developments not necessarily with any precedent, and the court can provide that precedent. And equity law goes back to the late Medieval period, with English Courts of Equity.

Under your schema someone who has a lawyer, was convicted and sentenced by a jury with proper instructions should have the sentence carried out even if their lawyer slept through the case.

And they're not a business court, although they'll hear business cases (which in the court of origination tend to be very narrow.) They also hear political cases. They can also tailor their decisions narrowly or broadly, with or without prejudice (without means the appealant can file again), order trials de novo (rare), or remand the case to a lower court to reconsider, that's where sympathy and empathy can play a part, because justice has to have that in consideration. Otherwise you have a court like in a Marxist state that's merely an apparatchuk.

If laws were all that clear cut we'd hardly need courts at all, just bureaucrats.

No

it is a justified use of a appeal to get a new trial if you can prove your attorney was willfully negligent. I agree that sympathy and empathy can and should play a part in our justice system, but not in SCOTUS for my aforementioned reasons.

And yes I know that it is highly unlikely for the person to actually be in front of the justices, but do you actually have to have a person to be present to feel sympathy for them?

P.S. I think your use of apparatchuk was wrong in a technical sense. Although I can understand what I think you meant by it. You could of gotten the same point across in a simpler and correct way. ie court like in a Marxist state that's merely an formality.

Why is it such a bad thing for a justice to have empathy OR sympathy, for that matter?

I don't recall hearing Obama, or anyone else, say that they want a justice to decide cases based on empathy. Obama simply said that empathy was a characteristic he looked for in a judge.

said that empathy and/or sympathy do have a place in justice, just in my opinion not on the supreme court. They are there not to judge guilt or innocence or sentence(except in extremely rare cases) they are there to judge the law and if it was followed.

Obviously, SC appointments are very important but to hear people like Karl Rove, John Yoo et al weighing in on Sotomayor is too much.

Why hasn't the DOJ hasn't appointed a Special Prosecutor to investigate the criminal activity of the Bush administration? Is anything going to happen? Frankly, if the architects of warrentless wiretapping, renditions, systemic governmental politicization and illegal torture aren't brought to justice I don't think it matters *who* we have on the Supreme Court.

Thinking about it, we haven't heard much about torture lately. We must keep this on the front pages and not let the Supreme Court appointment sidetrack justice.

I view the appointment extremely important, but it doesn't mean we continue to allow the media to just stop reporting on other stories that are detrimental to the justice system.

Limbaugh, Beck, Coulter, Buchanan. These four are experts on the subject of racism and should know a racist when they see one. They've been card-carrying bigots themselves for years on end.

Rush is bouncing around in that chair like he's mocking a cripple or on a Oxycontin withdrawal.

Naw,...that's just him shifting his weight to keep pressure off that ass cyst. I'm sure those things are pretty painful.

gets any bigger, even sheets from a king-sized bed won't fit him.

He used that ass cyst to dodge combat duty, it served it's purpose so he can have it removed now.

I could see Rush applying for a Purple Heart for his ass cyst. Unfortinatly you need to actually serve in the military to apply.

Maybe something is attached to that chair...

LOL - the chair gives a little shock every Rush lies.

)O(

Am I a racist?

I just hate:

No wonder I've never seen that.

To me Seinfield is an unfunny Gary Shandling

Who always looks like he's squinting in the stage lights.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5rxjNfsuoA

I've always felt that way about Shandling, an unfunny Jerry Seinfeld. But now that I think about it, if you stand them side by side, they both could be twin brothers from different mothers.

All that makes you is a music critic.

have the nerve to call Sotomayor stupid...
wow...just wow...
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0509/229...

Boy, what a freak show that was.

and laughs all the way to the bank.

Whenever Rush says something ignorant "He's just an entertainer." Let that right wing talking point go, you're being used.

yet they continue to spew hate and rightwing propoganda, tearing our country apart by doin so.
Don't believe that for a second quarzacc.
They have an agenda, never think for a second that they don't.

a defense mechanism where a person's personal attributes, unacceptable or unwanted thoughts, and/or emotions are ascribed onto another person or people. According to Wade, Tavris (2000) projection occurs when a person's own unacceptable or threatening feelings are repressed and then attributed to someone else.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them. (also helps enable the behavior).

Expect more; it's all part of the self destructive nature of hypocrisy and greed.

Pretty sums up their homophobia, too.

And stop flirtin with me! LOL!

the leader of the Hate Club providing another feeding of hate. a percentage of his listeners are addicted to hate. they need their fix. rush recently provided this same theme when he suggested that powell voted for obama because he's "black". this is probably (R)oad rage material for some of his driving listeners. maybe people that listen to rush while driving should have higher auto insurance premiums.

They shouldn't be too upset, though, she's got a history of corporate friendly decisions from the bench. Makes me wonder how much of this noise is just so much pleading not to be thrown in the briar patch.

these proxies are leading the Republican charge. None of them will ever stand for election. The politicians of the GOP who will be standing for election cannot risk alienating the women and the Latinos by getting down and dirty to this degree. If you were to put the pols on the spot by asking publicly if they agree with these people they'll mumble something about Rush et al being entertainers. Nobody ever seems to pursue that interesting follow up question: who are they entertaining?

An undercover operative to infiltrate the kitchens of Limbaugh and Cheney to finally push those fat asses off the earth. Too much? I finished a season of 24 in two days and I'm abit squirrely.

It took you two days to watch a season of 24? Hmmmm...something's wrong with that math there.

Hey, am I the only one who notices that the Great Heap O' Lies and Lard bounces exactly in time to the Commies and Fascists marching in goose-steps?

When Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was an undergraduate at Princeton University in 1974, she was part of a student effort to push the university to hire more Puerto Rican and Chicano administrators.

Blogger Michael Goldfarb at the conservative Weekly Standard has unearthed an op-ed which the twenty year old Sotomayor wrote for the Daily Princetonian during that period. He apparently believes that Sotomayor’s passionate defense of cultural diversity 35 years ago marks it as a childish ideal and ripe for mockery.

“This is strikingly similar to the case President Obama made this morning in favor of Sotomayor’s appointment to the Court,” Goldfarb sneers. “On the issue of diversity, Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl — that is, only by having a black president, an Hispanic justice, a female secretary of State, and Bozo the Clown as vice president will the United States become a true ‘vanguard of societal ideas and changes.’”

http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/05/27/conser...

I "like" how that scumbag denigrates 21 year old Latinas. 7 years ago I was one of those creatures Goldfarb thinks is beneath his contempt. It's the vision of a 21 year old Latina that helps carry her through life. Shit, it's the vision of any 21 year old girl that carries her through life.

At 21 I believed (and still do) that the GLBT community deserves full enfranchisement, and I was starting to come out of the closet.

I honor the younger me's vision. She was smart, determined, brave, and she would tell Goldfarb to kiss her ass!

The convictions I held at age 21 are doubled in strength now that I'm 42. I honor your 21 year old self as well as my own.

strengthened!

these white male righties pee their pants in their fear of a latina on the supreme court. The world is truly coming to an end!

im starting to accept the possibility that in order to make any progress we're going to have to wait till 2010/2012...when all these krazy repub incumbents loose their seats and the democrats can override the filibuster im actually not clear on the process of voting in a scotus judge so i may be out to lunch on this...but it seems to me as long as the repubs have enough votes to halt appointments, budgets etc... they will vote against anything the democrats try to enact...

Jabba the Rush!!

Rush = Irrelevant

today, specifically, how Limbaugh has knocked Sotomayor's education and intelligence. When I told her that Rush flunked out of college after a year, even flunking ballroom dancing, she nearly choked on her drink. Mom, having dropped out of high school yet so much more grounded than Rush, can see what a useful idiot he is.

It isn't just republicans calling her a racist, it's all of us.. because er, well, that's what she is.

Figures... Racist president picks racist judge.

No mystery there.

Also you should grow up politically and know that 'republican and democrat' are simply names you sign up under to vote --- they have little to NO control over anything.

It's the puppet masters who run Obama, like Zbiggy, Kissinger, Soros and Rockefeller that are running the show to your detriment.

Nothing wrong with racism just as long as it isn't directed toward fat little white men with tits and big bank accounts , right Rush ?

Come on guys and gals of Wingnutland. Make it obvious to everyone, even the most dense assholes among us, that you're unfit to govern even an aquarium for crying out loud.

You suck so much and you you are doing us the favor of PROVING IT.

Thanks a million...fuckheads!

.
Sotomayor once denied a white man a job, an apartment and a car loan.

No, wait. It was the other way around.

Never mind.
.

We need more sane people in control of the Supreme court.
Did I miss something, but does Robert has teeth?
