Gee, imagine that. A GOP bloodbath over Evita Sarah Palin:
But the real bile has been saved for those conservatives who have balked at the selection of Sarah Palin.
In addition to Mr Frum, who thinks her not ready to be president, Peggy Noonan, Ronald Reagan's greatest speechwriter and a columnist with the Wall Street Journal, condemned Mr McCain's running mate as a "symptom and expression of a new vulgarisation of American politics." Conservative columnist David Brooks called her a "fatal cancer to the Republican Party".
The backlash that ensued last week revealed the fault lines of the coming civil war.
Rush Limbaugh, the doyen of right wing talk radio hosts, denounced Noonan, Brooks and Frum. Neconservative writer Charles Krauthammer condemned "the rush of wet-fingered conservatives leaping to Barack Obama", while fellow columnist Tony Blankley said that instead of collaborating in heralding Mr Obama's arrival they should be fighting "in a struggle to the political death for the soul of the country".
During the primaries the Democratic Party was bitterly divided between Barack Obama's "latte liberals" and Hillary Clinton's heartland supporters, but now the same cultural division threatens to tear the Republican Party apart.
Jim Nuzzo, a White House aide to the first President Bush, dismissed Mrs Palin's critics as "cocktail party conservatives" who "give aid and comfort to the enemy".
He told The Sunday Telegraph: "There's going to be a bloodbath. A lot of people are going to be excommunicated. David Brooks and David Frum and Peggy Noonan are dead people in the Republican Party. The litmus test will be: where did you stand on Palin?"
But the best quote in this UK Telegraph piece was this one from Nuzzo:
"Win or lose, there is a ready made conservative candidate waiting in the wings. Sarah Palin is not the new Iain Duncan Smith, she is the new Ronald Reagan."
No doubt Palin is already the GOP frontrunner for 2012. (Sorry, Mitt.) Guess we'll be seeing the Republican Party finally decay into all-out right-wing populism. Which means: It's gonna get real ugly over the next four years.

Not that there was anything that great about Reagan (beyond people confusing the actor with the statesman), but I knew Ron Reagan. Ron Reagan was a friend of mine. Governor, you're no Ron Reagan. You're not even a Dick Nixon. Even Joe The McCarthy would be ashamed to be compared to you! But that's about as close as you'll get.
I can imagine a Senator Palin two years from now, co-chairing some McCarthy-like committee to differentiate real Americans from fake ones based on whether they own a gun or not, and where they buy their costume jewelry. She could easily spin that into a presidential campaign, and probably will. And by then the wingnuts will have executed all the moderates in the Republican party, so there'll be nobody to stop them from nominating her. I can't wait for the fun to start.

As for the coming civil war within the GOP, it couldn't happen to a more deserving gang of thugs in my estimation. When liars and hypocrites gather, they eventually become each other's own worst enemy.

But we all must remember that, while Palin is as dumb as a stump, she is not so when it comes to politics. She is a very smart politician. So, I expect Ms.Palin to spend the next four years studyin' and readin' and stuff so that she will sound reasonably intelligent, but not too much so to turn off Joe Sixpack, in 2012.
So, the 2012 Joanne has a little to fear from a very smart political person who has managed to become governor of her state. We all must remember that.
IF she doesn't go down due to the expanded Troopergate (or as she likes to call it, Tasergate - which does nothing but add more weight to the investigative side of her power abuse struggle), she will not be someone to easily dismiss.

Palin's round face will probably not make it to 50 before turning basset-cheeked. If she spends the 4 years counting caribou out of the public eye, the public who remembers the "sexy librarian" will be shocked by the change. If she spends the next 4 years in our face, she'll fatigue us.

She is just an opportunist. Anyone could have got elected governor in Alaska given the corruption she was running against. She won in a protest vote. I don't imagine she had much competition on the school board, town counsel or when she ran for mayor either.

McCain aides are today calling Palin a "whack job". Who knew?? Just about 3/4 of the country knew this the day he rolled this wingnut out and introduced her. We knew the MO - bring on a total shill, parade her family around to generate curiosity and talk, blame the media when people wanted more info on their lurid life, sequester the human puppet for weeks and then allow select people to interview her. There's an awful lot of hand-wringing going on, and the hosts themselves are incredulous that it's come to a point where a black Democrat might actually take the White House. They've got no one to blame but themselves for having covered up the sins of the current occupant of the White House for so long. A little more honesty on their part, and they might have been able to keep the Bush administration from committing the egregious acts that has put the Republicans in such an unflattering light.Forget the part about a black Democrat taking the White House. Sarah Palin will end up an historical footnote and will be considered the woman who lost the election for McCain. Her future in national politics is not assured, especially after Obama completes two successful terms as President. She may currently be the darling of the Christianists but their clout is ebbing and no amount of "branding" or "roll-out" will improve her image with the masses.
The Repugs would be much better off choosing a moderate woman to head their ticket in the next competitive national election.

I expect that the second Tasergate (she dubbed it as such in the interview - big mistakey!) will find even more abuses of power and will result in a full investigation about how she called back to her office to "cook the books" on her expenditures for her children's travel once she was tapped as Veep. This has been documented and will be part of this new investigation.
Her involvement with Ted Stevens is quite telling. In fact, sources in Alaska are confirming that just like Stevens, Palin also has some unsavory ties to Vesco. In fact, Spenard Building Supply who is the criminal charged with doing $250,000 of improvements free for Stevens also built the Palin's home. Uh - Oh! And I've heard that the lobbyist whom Stevens and Palin shared with Jack Abramoff is spilling his guts....more to come on this down the line - no doubt about it.
As Stevens goes, so goes his protege Palin! Where there's smoke, there's fire. In the Van Suskren interview, Toadie told her "I built this house with a few of my friends"....friends?? As in Spenard Building Supply-type friends? This will be a scandal soon as Spenard become a national issue.
This week he was guest hosting The Current on CBC radio. His first guest was Richard Pearle whom he let go off on an anti-Obama pro-McCain rant.

Ordinarily I don't much enjoy watching a salmon flailing away on the deck of a boat but this not dissimilar scene I find quite intriguing.
It is all to easy to take pleasure in the great republican implosion of 2008. After all, we have endured the scorn of the republicans and their selfish policies for a long time, we endured their lies, false wars, and every millionaire for himself philosophy. For 8 years we protested, with meager results, and felt powerless against the juggernaut of power, a power they used to shred the constitution, the economy and our standing in the world. So who could fault progressives for bringing out marshmallos to roast in the fire of their burning empire?
To this, I say do what Obama would do. He would be calm, he would be civil, he would not hammer away at the statue in the square, but would sit quietly and watch it fall, as he knew it would. This is a chance for us progressives to show that we are not like our oppressors, that we will govern with a sense of purpose and dignity. This is our chance to rejoyce in a change we've longed for, and to roll up our sleeves and work for the betterment of our nation. This is the time for progresssives to rise above petty reprisals, and channel our energy into effecting positive changes that will rescue our nation. Avoid the retoric of hate. We are not haters. We should channel our energy into doing something productive. There is so much work to be done. We don't have to kick the republicans when they are down (as they would likley do to us) lets show them and the world, that we are above it. Let's do what Obama would do. We should be cool, positive, and apply our boundless energy to productive activities.

And to this I would add that I don’t hate Sarah Palin. Many here are being funny and using quips to sound Stewertesque. It’s a good outlet. But take care that the jokes don’t ferment into the same divisive hatred element to which we’ve been subjected.
Sarah is not that bright. She’s well past her deserved place on the political ladder. She got there by riding Steven’s coat-tails. He’s getting what he deserves, and so will Sarah. All that she has going for her now is a knowledge of when to pause for the applause as she delivers her talking points.
There is much to do, and much to be done if/when Obama takes office. Patting ourselves on the back and saying “Hurray for our side!” is fine, but it’s a poor pastime - and not a substitute for change.

Thanks for those that replied. As I said, it is not easy to take the high road. In fact it will take discipline, but I think that is exactly what's called for. Obama has gotten us this far precisley becasue he has a cool head, a moral compass and has shown a simple human decency that's been so lacking from republicans. I think we would all be wise to take a page from his book, be reasoned a thoughtful, direct, and speak with conviction and clarity about where we need to take this nation. Getting out the torches and pitchforks will give reason for the republicans to react against our revolution. Let's not give them the satisfaction. Lets win clean, and lets win big. Maybe the politics of old will learn a thing or two from all of us.

if the republican party really turns in that direction, i honestly don't see that things will get any uglier than they are now. they will then be in real danger of becoming even more marginalized than they are now. i think there are more conservatives of the old school, (not that i agreed with any of them either), than is readily apparent from the foaming at the mouth gang now getting all the press, and they will make a concerted effort to regain control of the party's destiny. they are ugly enough, but what we are seeing now is so over the top that i can't envision this course continuing for long after the election. it's just too extreme even for many on the right to accept. of course every time i think they've hit a new low, there's a new surprise in the next day's releases.
The Republican party will splinter into Neo-conservative party and Dunce party (guess who will be the front runner).

Believe you me, the behind the scenes at the GOP would be as ugly as hell. The fighting and squabbling would be verging on the murderous. Guiliani, remember him? Remember he was going to be President after 9/11. How popular is he now. If Palin was all McCain's idea, the GOP will drop her like a hot stone.
There is a bit of a rally on Wall Street right now. I suppose McCain will claim victory for that.

As long as all the ugliness is kept in-house at the RNC, I hope it gets a thousand times uglier than the McCain campaign has acted in this election.
And if Sarah Palin really is the future face (she certainly won't ever be the brains) of the Republican Party - that is, if her supporters honestly believe that she is the next Ronald Reagan - then the Democrats will be able to roll out the corpse of Adlai Stevenson and still take the next election. Outside of her loyal voter base - that is, the most completely ignorant, paranoid, women-hating, minority-fearing, gun-toting nutjobs with American citizenship - Sarah Palin is a complete joke. And not a very funny joke at that. Henry Higgins wouldn't know where to begin with Sarah Palin, folks. So I sincerely hope her idiotic supporters get their wish because that would be nothing but good news for us.

If it comes down to Sarah vs Mitt, Mitt has the money to bury her. He will spend the next 4 years wining and dining media people, getting them on his side. He'll use his media friends to disseminate constant Palin scandals (I'm sure there are plenty) and he will payroll PIs to fan out across Alaska and find anything... anything.. that will keep her tied up in ethics problems for the next 4 years.
OK, he's probably doing that already. But he will gather all that info and he'll wait... wait until the right moment.
