Video: Republican legislator says disabled children are 'God's punishment' for abortion
When a group of religious-right poobahs unveiled their effort in Virginia last week to attack Planned Parenthood and its funding, one of them -- a Republican legislator named Bob Marshal, as Josh at RightWingWatch reported -- declared that God punished women who've had abortions by giving them disabled children later:
“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said Marshall, a Republican.
“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”
Marshall later tried to claim he hadn't said what he said:
A story by Capital News Service regarding my remarks at a recent press conference opposing taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood conveyed the impression that I believe disabled children are a punishment for prior abortions. No one who knows me or my record would imagine that I believe or intended to communicate such an offensive notion[.] I regret any misimpression my poorly chosen words may have created[.]
But yesterday, Josh got ahold of video of Marshall talking at the kickoff. Watch it for yourself.
Yeah, that's some misimpression. Not only was the original quote perfectly accurate, but Marshall goes on, discussing those Christians and their scriptural support for these beliefs:
Marshall: And with the knowledge they have from faith has been verified by a study by Virginia Commonwealth University. First abortions of the first pregnancy is much more damaging to a woman than latter abortions.
Bad enough that he would say it. Then to claim he didn't say what he clearly said is just cowardly and mendacious. That's some "Christian" character there, Bob.
And what will Sarah say?

is God's punishment to the nation for the Republican Party.

"... the knowledge they have from faith has been verified by a study by Virginia Commonwealth University. First abortions of the first pregnancy is much more damaging to a woman than latter abortions."
Well, seems like that ought to be a scientifically provable claim. I'd really be interested to see the numbers from that study. Either there's a statistically significant number of disabled children born to women whose first pregnancy was terminated by abortion, or there's not.
Let's have the numbers.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between previous abortion and low birth weight (LBW) and preterm birth (PB).
Method: The study examined live, singleton births using data from the United States Collaborative Perinatal Project. Logistic regression was used to control for obstetric and medical history, and lifestyle and demographic factors.
Result: Compared with women with no history of abortion, women who had one, two and three or more previous abortions were 2.8 (95% CI 2.48 to 3.07), 4.6 (95% CI 3.94 to 5.46) and 9.5 (95% CI 7.72 to 11.67) times more likely to have LBW, respectively. The risk for PB was also 1.7 (95% CI 1.52 to 1.83), 2.0 (95% CI 1.73 to 2.37) and 3.0 (95% CI 2.47 to 3.70) times higher for women with a history of one, two and three or more previous abortions, respectively.
Conclusion: Previous abortion is a significant risk factor for LBW and PB, and the risk increases with the increasing number of previous abortions. Practitioners should consider previous abortion as a risk factor for LBW and PB.
... is NOT the same as developmental disability/retardation.

The Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP) was a prospective study of neurologic disorders and other conditions in children. Pregnant women were enrolled in 1959-1965 when they presented for prenatal care at any of 12 university hospital clinics located throughout the United States. The mothers' blood was collected approximately every eight weeks, at delivery, and six weeks postpartum. Sera were stored in glass at -20°C, with no recorded thaws. Approximately 42,000 women were enrolled, with 55,000 children born in the study. The children were systematically assessed for the presence of birth defects and other outcomes through age eight years. Extensive questionnaire data are available from all visits. In addition, at the Philadelphia site, anthropometric and pubertal measures from one to six visits during adolescent years are available for that site's CPP children.

and did they want to 'investigate' or 'prove' something? Also how do they know the women were all truthful about previous history? What were other contributing factors in the pregnancies studied? were these women all smokers? Non smokers? what was the LBW among smokers v non smokers, if it there were both? Did the women all receive the same diet and healthcare throughout pregnancy? Were any under or overweight? Employed or unemployed? Income range?
Sorry. Way too many variables not accounted for here that can determine the outcome of a pregnancy.

I saw this story on Maddow and almost wretched! How the hell can someone be so stupid as to draw this sort of moronic correlation. In support of his allegations he points to Ezekiel in the Bible. Why is it that when Christians want to make political arguments they always turn to the old testament. Melissa Harris-Lacewell (one of my favorite people) appeared with Maddow and tore Marshal a new one on theological understanding (she's a seminary student as well as a Princeton professor of political science). See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVPR4A8pVq0. Not only does Marshal not understand reproductive rights, or the process of reproduction for that matter, he doesn't understand the Bible. What an imbecile. How can people this stupid get elected?

Melissa Harris Lacewell. I put her and Rachel at the head of the class of brilliant progressive women AND men. We are lucky to have them on our side.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
this, and since Melissa's a seminary student, she knows enough about the Bible to make the point that first born offspring, whether human or animal, were often to be blood sacrifices, even Jesus.
And as I said the other night, according to this idiot's logic, I must have had childhood onset bipolar because my Mom's first pregnancy miscarried.

I've never seen change without a fire
I see we are simpatico Anna :)
I even attended Wheaton College for a year before I couldn't take the intolerance anymore. One thing any theologian knows about Judaism and Christianity is that both religions have a scriptural tradition of favoring second born or later born sons: Abel over Cain, Issac over Esau, Michael over his many older brothers, the list goes on and on.
That's interesting -- what's the rationale behind that?
why scripture was written the way it was written back then. It takes humility to admit that many of these things are a mystery to us. But, though in Judeo-Christian tradition, the first born are supposed to be favored, there is a long standing tradition of second borns some how taking that favor away.
these cases, the Bible suggests that these younger sons were somehow more pleasing to God, and the elder sons were less pleasing, and/or envious of the younger sons' standing. Cain was very jealous of Abel, Jacob's elder sons were very jealous of Joseph, and um, Jacob was a bit of a Mama's Boy I guess you could say, and Rebecca helped him trick Issac into giving him Esau's birthright.

When the nation of Israel split into two kingdoms: Israel and Judea, the religious leaders of Judea (the second nation) wanted to show its people that they were still in God's favor, thus generating stories or rehashing others to make it seem like God favored the second or later child.
"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas
Also, there is the whole motif of the sacrifice of the first born to create the glorious birth of the second generation.
Look how this is repeated in the story of Jesus's resurrection.
lost on this idiot legislator unfortunately.
I've never seen change without a fire
Your absolutely right, Joseph. That's who I meant when I said Michael. My mistake
In the Old Testament that Marshal is referring to, does it say that the first born should be sacrificed to the Lord, or is that just lambs and goats?
but look at the stories referenced so far as examples of sacrifice of status. The main point is that Marshal's claim that first borns have a special irrevocable status is totally fallacious
They didn't practice human sacrifice
I think the Midianites would have something to say about that.
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
when God told Moses to kill the Midianites, because that is a far cry from the sort of ritual human sacrifice performed in other cultures. If you're referring to another event I'm not familiar with then ok, but if not, Moses slaying of the Midianites was religious warfare, not ritual human sacrifice.
if you think of the story of Abraham and Issac. Even the slaying of the first born sons of Egypt might be considered part of this pattern.
The Messiah is referred to in the Old Testament many times as the Lamb of God, if you read between the lines there, Jesus or whomever one considers to be the Messiah would be the blood sacrifice for humanity's sins...
I've never seen change without a fire
Issac! he was a second born son to Ishmael, the son of Abraham to whom Muslims connect their lineage.
I was thinking of Issac's being Abraham's promised son with Sarah, and God testing Abraham by asking him to sacrifice him...
I've never seen change without a fire
because he's Sarah's first born son, the first born son of Israel, but actually Abraham's second born
Not "Issac"!
We were thinking fast and typing fast, and there were some misspellings and confused names in the mix, but it is really not a crisis situation.
... that God told Abraham to toss Hagar out of his tent, and that their son, Ishmael, is the ancestor of those who would become the Muslim people.
Sarah, Abraham's wife told him to get rid of Hagar and Ishmael after she became pregnant.

I thought it was God who told Abraham to take up with Sarah again, and that He would grant him a son by her.
Of course, God would later punk Abraham by telling him, "Hey, take your boy, Isaac, up to the mountain and sacrifice Him to me, because I am like, totally cool!"
And we see that Abraham puts away his objections and his doubts, and is ready to do it. Better yet, Isaac is ready to lie down on the altar.
Some really nifty family values in the Bible.
Genesis 21:8-10
"The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."
Genesis 21:17-19
"God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation." Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink."
But yes, I agree with you, some pretty shitty family values on display there.
I've never seen change without a fire
Genesis:
"Look up on the wall. There on the floor. Under the pillow. Behind the door. There's a crack in the mirror. Somewhere there's a hole in the windowpane."
Genesis:
"Rockface moves to press my skin, white liquid turns sour within. Turn fast, turn sour. Turn sweat, turn sour. Must tell myself that I'm not here - I'm drowning in a liquid fear. Bottled in a strong compression my distortion shows obsession."
It makes you wonder why people like Marshal pick and choose stories from the Old Testament, when it seems that they don't really understand it. Do they seriously want to bring back stoning and camel-hair cloth?
not sure they realize that life under Old Testament rules would be too draconian, even for them.
I've never seen change without a fire

...because it's important to keep this at the forefront of our minds.
Isn't it interesting that conservatives and Republicans are always so eager to lecture other people about how very important it is to take responsibility for one's own choices and actions...yet when the excrement hits the spinning blades and their own backsides are on the hot seat, they're just as quick as anyone else to deny everything and pass the buck in an attempt to avoid being held accountable? The fact that Marshall tried to deny saying such a repulsive thing only serves to prove that he has no real courage and no real integrity -- which at least in my book makes him a woefully inadequate leader.

I'm willing to bet that it's more of an economic/lifestyle situation that would lead some of the women to have one or more abortions and children with low-birth weight.
There's probably not enough evidence in the study to show a direct correlation, but rather it displays an indirect correlation.
