Violence at immigrants' march in Connecticut suburb as white nationalists turn out to harass

The New Haven Independent has a complete report on the ugliness that emerged from last weekend's march by an immigrant-rights group marching in the suburb of East Haven, Conn.:
The clash happened during an event organized Saturday by New Haven immigrant advocacy organization Unidad Latina En Accion. More than 100 people marched through the streets of East Haven on Saturday, protesting alleged racial profiling on the part of East Haven police. They met groups of counter-protesters along the way, including a visiting band of white supremacists.
... Two arrests were made following a brief fistfight between a female marcher, Jessica Maldonado of East Haven, and Chelsea Fiorentino, an 18 year-old New Haven woman who was standing with a counter protest made up of members of two white pride organizations. Maldonado’s father, Dimas Maldonado, said that his family has suffered from police harassment. (Click on the play arrow to watch the fight and arrests.)
The argument allegedly started after Chelsea Fiorentino yelled an insult at Maldonado, who then crossed the street and confronted her. East Haven police quickly separated the women, placed them under arrest, and kept the march moving. The women were charged with breach of peace and assault; Maldonado was also charged with interfering with an officer.
It appears, from watching the video compiled by the Independent, that there were other near-brawls along the way. That's not terribly surprising: White supremacists and other haters turn out to these things in the hopes of starting fights, and they often succeed.
But watching this tape, one can't help but feel a sense of foreboding about what's likely to occur when immigration reform comes up on the national plate this fall. These people are already organized and already inclined to violence. If you thought the town-hall teabaggers went nuts over health-care reform, just wait.

And the melting pot idea is great, if it works. However, what you find is not the melting of different peoples into a homogenous whole, but stratifications of groups that refuse to be "melted". I've said that if the U.S. is a melting pot, then the English language is the flame that heats the pot. However, we find extreme resistance even to learn English by those who would come here and "melt in". In Miami, you can't get a government or civilian job in many departments if you don't speak Spanish.
If we were all "illegal" at one time (which our ancestors were not), than at least those people worked hard to melt in, not set up smaller versions of their homelands here in the U.S. Again, in Miami, things are not that much different that Havana, where supposedly the Cuban exiles could not stand to live because of Castro. A little known secret that these Cuban Americans won't tell you. They are some of the biggest racists that ever lived. One of the reasons that Castro has ruled for so long is that when the white, Cuban upper class fled after his take over, he appointed and promoted many black Cubans who had been repressed during Batista's reign. These people are extremely loyal to a man who would give them a chance to succeed after so many yearsof being looked down upon.
It has been the same for many years with regards to assimilation. Read your history. Ethnic ghettos are the norm here in the US. Non anglophonic peoples have gathered together for mutual support since the begining. It is their grandchildren (second generation) who actually become assimilated.
New immigrants, legal and illegal have been allowed in to fill a niche. Legal ones are educated and brought in to force wages down for equally talented and educated "native" born citizens (think H1B visas and Microsoft immigration lobbying currently). Illegals are brought in to replace the slaves who were outlawed, as evidenced by the waves of immigrants since the civil war, particularly during the period after the Civil War called the industrial revolution. Our free public education system was patterned after the Prussian model designed to assimilate a diverse ethnic populace and educate to a bare minimum standard to perform tasks required by industry. The Aztecs and Incas didn't "seize territory" and then deny others the right to exist, the way whites do. The idea of jealously guarded private property did not exist among them. They integrated preexisting populations into their empires without relegating them to starvation and repression. Their idea of war did not involve extermination and bringing the maximum amount of pain to their targets, and plunder was not a part of their culture either - again, unlike with whites. And if the first thing that comes to your mind is, "But the Aztecs subjected hundreds of people to bloody sacrifices!", that is true, but it wasn't oppressed populations alone that were sacrificed, but a broad range of people, from nobility to commoners. It was done for instrumental religious reasons, see. Read up on some of this sometime. You might learn something.

And the culture of the Incas and the Aztecs sound pretty much like feudal Europe. A very powerful military class, a priestly class, and everyone else from skilled artisans to unskilled laborers sharing roughly the same level of poverty, because all the wealth was going upwards.

The odds were that one: diseased blankets were commonly featured in Westerns, and two: unethical merchants would buy the blankets and sell them, and three they may've been acts of charity that turned fatal, when someone had a disease, whether it killed them or not transmitted by the blankets.
The indigenous were also sent to reservations in areas where today we know they weren't likely to survive, like relocating plains tribes to the Everglades, but the attitude of the day was likely if whites could survive it so could anyone else. In European history, it was often nomadic tribes that were the most violent. Although they could be hunters and gatherers they could be raiders as well, raiding other peoples weapons, food etc. That a human quality, not a racial one.

In the earlier years of our country, immigration was encouraged to help build a young, labor intensive nation. There is still a need for the infusion of diverse talents and ideas. There are those Mexican's who believe that they still have legal rights to a large part of the Southwest, saying that the U.S. illegally took it from them. They forget, however, that the territory was taken as a result of a war, and that the land in question had previously been seized by the Spanish, another European aggressor in the New World. So where do you draw the line? There has to come a time where we say "these are our borders, and if you want to reside within them, you do so legally". Native Americans supposedly crossed over from Asia millinia ago when there was a land bridge between continents.
So really, there were no Native Americans. You can get sily about it, but you have to accept that at some point, the land grabbing had to stop.
You know you can go almost anywhere in the world and be there illegally and get good free health care. Its only when you try to get a job does the hammer fall down hard. People in other countries protect their jobs and give away social benefits. In this country we give away our jobs and try to restrict our services. I like the other countries way better.

Along with so many other so wrong things I saw in that video something caught my eye. There's a guy near where the girls fought and he appears to be with the anti group. When the fight broke out and he's looking at it, he allows the American flag he was so proudly waving to hit the sidewalk several times. I guess he doesn't care as much about his flag as he would have everyone believe.

First, write down the moderate Democratic position. Let's say, amnesty with a path to citizenship that doesn't penalize those who have been waiting in line legally. Now, take that piece of paper, crumple it up and throw it into a wood chipper. It's off the table.
Second, write down the moderate Republican position. Let's say, fines for employers who knowingly hire illegals and fast-tracking of INS investigations. This is the new moderate Democratic position.
Now, write down the far right Republican position. That would be a two thousand mile electrical fence patrolled by dogs who shoot killer bees out of their mouths. This is the new moderate Republican position.
Finally, write down the most paranoid tinfoil hat conspiracy you can think of. Obama is a secret Mexican who is going to use taxpayer dollars to fund ACORN to bus millions of illegals into the country to vote for al Qaeda in the next election and impose Mexican-style sharia law in the US. This is the new majority Republican position.
Now, for the debate.
The Republican position will be that whatever Obama proposes is, by definition, something Hitler either did or would have done.
The Democratic position will be that whatever Obama proposed is now off the table because they don't support Hitler.
The White House position will be that Obama never supported his own proposals and that nothing has changed. He still agrees with himself that his proposals are a good idea, but none of them are essential. Instead, Obama is now open to the thing about the fence and bee-shooting dogs.
The Republican response will be to point out that Hitler had bee-shooting border patrol dogs, too.

The Ogdenvilleians go to Springfield where their cheap labor is welcomed by the lazy inhabitants of Springfield. Eventually the townspeople get sick of the changes, for example, overcrowded hospitals with foreign medical sheets. This leads to the police patroling the border which allows even more immigrants. Next private citizens go out to the boarder with their guns but this still does not work. Mayor Quimby and the town deside to build a wall to keep them out, and naturally the wall is built by Ogdenvilleians since they have cheap labor. The episode ends happily, but this is a clear paraody of the situation with Mexican immigrants into America.

But because America is saturated with illegal laborers who are under-cutting my labor rates by living 15+ people in a single family home I can't compete! If the employers still demand (illegal) cheap labor, regardless if Immigration picks up 2 dozen or more, there will still be more cheap labor to take their place.
If Immigration and the Justice Department actually went after those that employed such workers and throw them in jail. You'll see the demand for that kind of labor drop down real quick.

You see, I read/watch C & L every day. I try to read everything John writes here; and I was referring to John's and many of his reader's past and current stances on illegal immigration in general, not just this post. It is a very important issue to me in particular because I and my family have lived this decline in and all around my community here in California. Many Americans are against COMPREHENSIVE REFORM because the implications of some of the proposals with only serve to further devastate the quality life for us all. If we demonstrate or voice our opinions we are often painted as racists or tea baggers, etc... It's just wrong!
