I guess the news peg for this is the anniversary of the start of WWII in September 1939, but Pat Buchanan has gone ahead and apologized for Hitler, claiming he sought no empire or wider war with Europe, and had merely benign interests of German unification at heart:

As of March 1939, Hitler did not even have a border with Russia. How then could he invade Russia?
Matt Yglesias does quick work of the historical inaccuracies - Hitler invaded Russia as soon as he achieved a border with them by conquering Poland. And this is a decent riposte as well - Buchanan seems to expect a crazy person to also be a rational military strategist, and when he's not, searches for alternative explanation ("Hitler couldn't have wanted war because he didn't have enough planes! So it's Britain's fault!").
But I'll take the less dainty approach. In 1939, in a small town called Averduct on the German-Polish border, practically every member of my family was rounded up by Nazi authorities, herded into a local synagogue, and burned alive inside. This would fall in Buchanan's revisionism as part of the supposedly honest and forthright effort by Hitler to annex Danzig and restore the German homeland (hey, Hitler just wanted some Lebensraum - why not let him annex whatever he decided was part of Germany, right? Don't you want to save lives?). But my dead ancestors didn't live in Danzig (now Gdansk). They had nothing to do with such a conflict. Maybe that was the work of a few bad apple Nazis acting alone. That and the other 6 million incidents.
But the bigger point here to be made is that Pat Buchanan is paid by the allegedly liberal cable news network MSNBC, he has been on it for years, if you add up all his appearances throughout the day he probably spends as much time on the air as anyone outside of the Morning Joe crowd, and that's... OK. Calling Hitler misunderstood is not a firing offense at the liberal cable news network MSNBC.

But if Hitler was out to conquer the world — Britain, Africa, the Middle East, the United States, Canada, South America, India, Asia, Australia — why did he spend three years building that hugely expensive Siegfried Line to protect Germany from France? Why did he start the war with no surface fleet, no troop transports and only 29 oceangoing submarines? How do you conquer the world with a navy that can’t get out of the Baltic Sea?
Well, that one's pretty easy to answer: In addition to what True/Slant says, Hitler's goal in WWII was never to conquer the world. It was merely to conquer Europe, European Russia and portions of Northern Africa. That's pretty much all a land war. If he wanted to conquer the world, it's pretty clear that he would have to pause to regroup after he conquered Europe.

I recently read an article indicating that Hitler did not want a World War. Poland had an Alliance with England and a small dispute over a border town in Poland caused the ruckus to escalate. Hitler did not have bombers and he built great defenses against France along that border. So if he was not ready for such a war why would he vigorously push for it?
He offered peace several times after certain conquests.
That said, he did take over and decimate a democracy during the 30's and formed a fascist state. However, as to whether he sought World Conquest at the outset of the war is really the point here. Otherwise, this was a local conflagration that escalated.

The rocket program pre-dated the Nazi rise to power (ref: The Rocket and the Reich), and the nuclear program never had enough money to do anything of note. The Japanese nuclear program made significantly more progress.

I just registered to ask this question thinking that someone on this chat might know what i'm talking about:
Many years ago, when i was about 13 years old, i read an autobiography about a young boy in the Polish resistance. The protagonist was about 15 years old who fought against the Germans in Warsaw. He was eventually sent to TREBLINKA, and escaped, one of the few to ever do so. Part of his evasion of the Germans was him hiding in the pit of an outhouse while soldiers defecated on him from above. The book ends with him in America with a wife and children who then die in a house fire (i think in California). It was a very influential book for me as a teen; i had no real knowledge of the second world war up until then, and i have tried to find the book for years. If anyone knows the title of the book, or the author or has any idea of what i am talking about could you please comment on it here or maybe send me an email (jbadness{AT}hotmail{DOT}com)

Martin Grey's story was the one i was trying to find. It gave me great inspiration but also a hard slap in the face as i realized that nothing i was going through would ever come close to what Martin had to deal with.
I was about the the same age and was so taken by his strength and perseverance.

Reading Buchanan's revisionism from a European or German perspective is just stunning. The USA has become a country that has no idea of history anymore. No wonder any Republican can currently count on this fact to spread the most obvious lies about healthcare, medicare and Obama's so-called "fashism" around.
Count on it: Within about five years someone of the Goldberg, Coulter or Buchanan cabal will publish a book claiming the liberals started the Iraq war.
I never got through the Communist Manifesto, much less Mein Bitch, but it sticks in the back of my head that Hitler at one obscure moment in history _said_ he had no intention toward empire. What he was _doing_ in the background was a totally different matter of course.
