Republican Bill Would Require Home Owners To Retain Internet Access Logs
Chalk this up as forcing you to become big brother:
Republican politicians on Thursday called for a sweeping new federal law that would require all Internet providers and operators of millions of Wi-Fi access points, even hotels, local coffee shops, and home users, to keep records about users for two years to aid police investigations.
The legislation, which echoes a measure proposed by one of their Democratic colleagues three years ago, would impose unprecedented data retention requirements on a broad swath of Internet access providers and is certain to draw fire from businesses and privacy advocates.
"While the Internet has generated many positive changes in the way we communicate and do business, its limitless nature offers anonymity that has opened the door to criminals looking to harm innocent children," U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said at a press conference on Thursday. "Keeping our children safe requires cooperation on the local, state, federal, and family level."
Joining Cornyn was Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, the senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who said such a measure would let "law enforcement stay ahead of the criminals."
Two bills have been introduced so far--S.436 in the Senate and H.R.1076 in the House. Each of the companion bills is titled "Internet Stopping Adults Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth Act," or Internet Safety Act.
So in essence, if you have a wireless router in your home then you would be required to log all access to that router and keep those logs for two years. Why? Because your neighbor might do something bad and use your internet connection to do it.
What has me scratching my head is the situation of failure. What if my $50 Linksys decides to bite the dust after one year? Do I have to store that router for another year to comply with this law?
How about people who have routers without logging, or that has very limited logging that might only keep X number of records and couldn’t possibly store the data for two years? Will these people have to go out and by new routers now?
This legislation will really cause outcries from privacy advocates. Just the idea that some people may have to go out and buy new hardware simply to become a new “big brother” for our government is very troubling.

There are two things congressional republicans will never understand
1) Humor
2) Technology
Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water.
And two things that Republicans just can't stop thinking about:
1)Having taboo sex
2)Their neighbors having taboo sex
Because they have a brain they don't understand. They have a rational brain sitting on top of a reflexive brain. They assume everyone is bad and evil on the inside because they are getting flashes of things they "should not do" whereas most others do not. They assume that people want power above all else because they do, because they erroneously think power can alter facts and create truth. They can't see that a brain has two sides. One brain thinks the other replays to your admonitions whenever you need direction, and completely takes over your body when you are "in shock".
The desires within they obsess over would be better served with counseling and a loving relationship with another caring human.
Unlikely since those who want to change everyone OTHER than themselves will try and mold people around them to their liking, in so doing will destroy that which they loved.
It's a vicious cycle brought about with denial of what you desire, and saying "The Devil! The Devil is trying to make me think this way!"
Sad, and pathetic.

This is some of the most two-faced, hypocritical grandstanding I've ever seen. These people don't give two shits for the "innocent children". They're just using the issue to grab more power.
They want to help the innocent children? How about FUNDING SCHOOLS? How about nutritional programs? How about creating jobs for their families?
These fucking Republican shitbags make me sick with their hand-wringing, back-stabbing BULLSHIT.
*sigh* That felt good. For about three seconds.

its fun to blame it all on one party, but your need to pin the tail on one party on not the other has blinded you to the complicity of the other party on this one as well... Now ,I don't think republicans are saints, im just saying, the democrats aren't either..

This is exactly what happened to the German people, isn't it? Everyone was encouraged and even extorted into spying on everyone else.
What are these pathetic jerks so afraid of? And don't they realize that they too would be spied on while watching internet porn, soliciting gay sex from pages, ordering up "diaper service" (think Vitter?), making deals with guys like Abramoff, etc.?
Tell you what. I'll agree to that if Cornyn will propose a bill requiring American post offices to make copies of every single envelope and package label that comes through their doors and keep those copies for two years, just to help law enforcement identify potential child exploiters. And Cornyn can pay for it out of his own pocket.
at every turn these fucks want to increase the size of government
just in the stupidest ways
It's not stupid. It's called "converting a republic into a fascist oligarchy."
It's a step by step play. You create the disaster and you make it worse, and then you accept only solutions which take away rights and freedoms and expands your powerbase.
You do it over and over and over again.
Some say the current stage of this plan "The War on Terror" came from the end of the Cold War. The terrorism being mostly staged for maximum fear effect.
Many agree "The War on Drugs" was also a part of this plan. Emphasis was on expanding government power and police power, and we gave them so much power it went beyond sane.
Besides suicide, Drugs crime is the only crime where the apparent perpetrator is also the victim. How? How can you justify criminalizing the act of consumption. You can't, obviously, (which is not a crime) but possession and trading are the crimes they use against you, an attack on your freedom of choice.
Let me put the drug thing this way. "Would you allow someone to tell you what you could and could not listen to on your ipod?"
As with drugs, both music and drugs have lasting emotional reactions, both can control mood, can cause death by suicide, can change your ideology, can put you in an altered mental state.
This is a war, a war in which your government has clearly chosen to serve power, not you.

Keep a log? What the fuck is this asshole thinking? Maybe he should propose a law to keep a log on how many sex crimes his Republican buddies are committing.
that the majority of "offenders" who will break this law will do so because they have no clue as to how they would go about saving a log if required to do so.

Where's Glenn Beck?!! I need close-ups and Hannity with O Fortuna! Socialism!!!
socialism has nothing to do with over monitoring. It has to do with people having access to certain things that benefit the society as a whole, public transports, medical care, retirement funds. It's the redistribution of wealth, and it's what scares the wealthy the most. That's why they try to make 'Socialism' sound like the boogy man and attribute this kind of bullshit to socialism. It's not. It's probably the most humane of all political movements.
This is more akin to totalitarianism and something you are more likely to see in a fascist state.
me-oww!
taking money from people who've earned it and giving it away to people who have not is not charity, its theft. If you think otherwise, send me your home address, and i'll come help you redistribute your 'wealth' to the homless in your city. They are after all, less fortunate than you, and you are being very very greedy by not giving away your furniture to those in need.
By the way, you cannot have socialism in a free society without totalitarianism to enforce it. So much for the marxist-utopia, eh?
Rothbard > Rothschild
How do you feel about giving Fat Cat Bankers hundreds of billions?
Some people use the term socialism in that context. I am not one, I call it Corporate Welfare.
I also call it theft.
If it is socialism then totalitarianism may be in order for for enforcing it.
Our Corporate Welfare is massive and pernicious.
Doing things for citizens is part of the social contract. We still do some things to take care of our citizens. Welfare is not one since after Clinton it has been all but eliminated.
How do you feel about Social Security, that is a pay as you go system, it is part of the social contract.
Your deductions today pay for recipients today, they do not go into a private account for you.
Some people call that socialism.
When it is time for you to collect in your dotage you should hope that the public education system has produced a populace capable of being employed to have FICA deductions sufficient for your benefits.
Some people goes so far as say public education is socialism. It is certainly part of the social contract.
Would you describe the Swedish society as totalitarian? The Norwegians? The French? The current Chilean government. The Spanish government? These are now or have been socialist governments.
Socialism is not, in my mind and others, about a free lunch for anyone, it is about a social contract. Establishing and maintaining a minimum level.
We have had 60 years of propaganda in this country against socialism so as perpetuate the profits of the military industrial complex in a cold war against the communists.
PROPAGANDA.
The problem with the communists is that they attempt to guarantee the results of their brand of socialism. To do so they become totalitarians. That much is impossible to defend.
But they provide quality education for their people and universal health care for all.
Explain to me again how advanced a nation we are when we fail to provide universal health care for our citizens. It is not a free lunch, it is paid for. We are the only industrial state to attach insurance to health. It adds a layer of, it is said, an additional 30% + in cost.
We are the only developed country to fail in this regard.
And we are not doing that well in education.
I would like to see a whole lot more socialism in this country, for citizens but not for the Fat Cats or the Corporations, which is what we have now.
What we have now is much closer to a Fascist Totalitarianism than anything.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
Thanks for having the patience to lay this out so clearly for the OP. I seem to have lost most of my ability to calmly explain things to people who are so thoroughly propagandized.
Unfortunately, it's a pretty safe bet that your words will fall on deaf ears. mjULTRA is too awash in fear of his or her neighbours to realize who the real social parasites are.
Government of, by and for the people. I wonder if the Founders realized that this would still be revolutionary heresy all these many years later.
at least they should extend the same courtesy to us pinko commie bastards, since we had to suffer through multiple volumes of god awful Randian prose.
I'm wondering what you mean by, "taking money from people who've earned it and giving it away to people who have not..."
Are you talking about government investment in infrastructure or police? Because I don't see how that's giving anything to one group and not another - except that those with access to infrastructure or more to protect get disproportionate value.
If you are talking about "entitlement" programs like medicare, the less affluent are charged disproportionately more than the wealthy.
I just don't think you know what you are talking about.
Umm ... Mj... You totally don't know anything you are talking about.
You are ALLOWED to get ahead and get rich in the society because of the laws of the land. This is a community of people all in it together as it stands yes?
Well if someone fails in your society using the rules that made you wealthy, you ARE RESPONSIBLE for all those who cannot make ends meet or get sick and die from your pollutants and products.
(I have advocated taking directly from the rich and redistribution their wealth. Yes, but the Robin hood situation usually comes at a last resort by starving people. And for good reason. "Then by God we take it back!")
You stole their money/land/life.
If you cannot see that everyone in a society is responsible for everyone else who is in it with them I'm sorry, but it's true.
You can't get rich off the backs of the poor by broken laws and unfair treatment and expect no consequences or responsibility.
And you certainly can have socialism without force.
Us Canadians are not pulling guns on each other or use or military to push our citizens into paying.
You get all your taxes back if you don't make enough money anyways. Combine that with the fact I get relatively free healthcare, unemployment insurance, disability insurance, welfare, police and fire protection, my countries military force, plus new infrastructure, and daycare...
If you get rid of one of those services then we lose as a society, as a community. We would have homeless walking around, exploitation of minors and women, sick and dying begging for anything to save them, girls dying of abortions in back allies, infants abandoned etc...
Since I don't want to live in that world, why ON EARTH would I want to be anything BUT socialist?
I want the sick healed, I want the countries children safe and warm.
If you don't think that for your countrymen I would question if you even know what the word "citizen" and "patriot" mean.

The government can only confiscate the weapons that are known about. This thing sounds like it would be nearly impossible to enforce. I mean how in the hell would they? How the fu*k would this protect children? Isn't that the parents responsibility?
Should we also have a tape recorder on in our homes 24/7 taping every word we say so they can listen to everything that was said in our homes?
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
All phone calls by congressmen should be monitored 24/7. I wonder how Cornyn would feel about that.
Here's a little information about what an Internet Access Log records:
http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/web/faq/index.xml.ID...
But it looks to me as if you'd have to purchase software to keep a record of your own access to sites, unless there's something built in to all computers that does it automatically. Is there?
Annie, fyi what was described on that page were Web Access Logs. Those are kept by servers (the machines you navigate to) rather than clients (machines like your home computers that navigate to servers). This article indicates that the law requires the clients to save logs as well, which would be really stupid, I mean what are the cops going to do start going from home to home asking to see your log files? It is possible with existing software to keep logs. Your browser keeps a record of every page you visit in the history and how long that is kept depends on your personal settings. If you have a router in your home (a router lets more than one device such as a computer or printer share the same network and Internet connection) those also have the capability to store log data on which IP addresses are connected to. I'm not as familiar with that but from the article it sounds like different routers have different built-in capacity to record logs, some do some don't.
So if clients must save logs of those accessing their website servers, why require the user to keep logs, too? Can't the government use what's already available?
I did not know that routers have a logging feature until I read this report. I'm going to check ours to see if it logs where we surf. We've had it for years!
Right now, I'm agreeing with Captain Kangaroo in a post below. I'm not going to keep those records, no matter what. That's an unconstitutional requirement. They can come haul me off to jail, feed and clothe me, and supply me with medical care if they want.
" U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said at a press conference on Thursday. "Keeping our children safe requires cooperation on the local, state, federal, and family level."
if we want to keep our children safe, we need to keep
ALL REPUBLICANS off the internet and off the streets.
isn't the show Predator based on all the latest gop
child abuse and molesting they have done for at the
least, the last 8 yrs?
After we keep all our records on our computers, record every word uttered in our homes, do we need to keep a log of everywhere we go, how far it is and how long we were gone? That way if someone wants to go near a school to prey on children, they would just have it written there right on their log. Cops would have it made in the shade I guess.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
and then we will have to send in all urine and feces
for analysis, labeled for day, time of elimination and
with detailed list of food consumed previously.
just pusing the edge. maybe if we all just send the
above to the gop for about a month, they will finally
back off.........no they won't, that's dreaming.
What you describe, re: collection of bodily excretions, has been done already. It's not exactly the same list of, um, materials, that you mention, but it's close enough, in my book.
Cultivation of linear paranoia is a hallmark of totalitarianism. While we may look back at the actions of the STASI with laughter or disbelief, the reality is that it's frighteningly easy for a society to degenerate into absurdity & fear. It was ordinary people doing this to one another - it always is.
http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,2144,2555...
Hey, don't forget that all girls and women who menstruate will have to report to menstruation sequestration centers to sit on a pot during their periods so that all their menstrual blood can be microscopically examined to see if it contains tiny people:
http://www.kfsm.com/news/nationworld/sns-ap-a...
Then I guess there would have to be a coroner's inquest to determine the cause of death for each tiny person found, the person responsible (if the cause of death is not natural causes) would be charged with murder or negligent homicide or manslaughter, the tiny dead person would be assigned a Social Security number and then given a Christian burial....
Keeping children safe is important but these dimwitted Texans haven't thought this through. We don't want the totalitarian government that draconian measures like this would lead to. If the repigs truly hate big government they should be against Big Brother.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
Fuck that.
I get to see John Cornyn's cheesy political commercials every election season, and this guaranteed-to-fail bill seems like fodder for the next commercial: "John Cornyn introduced a bill to protect children from being exploited by anonymous predatorrrrrs, and the pedophile Democrat VOTED IT DOWN!!!....vote Cornyn"
Bill McCollum, down here in Fla. is making commercials about keeping childen safe on the internet. I need to pay more attention to these commercials and see if they are alluding to something like this.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
""While the Internet has generated many positive changes in the way we communicate and do business, its limitless nature offers anonymity that has opened the door to criminals looking to harm innocent children," U.S. Sen. John Cornyn".

...should respond to this with two words: Mark Foley! if the republicans in d.c. can't keep children safe from members of their own party while Dennis Hastert and his boys have been informed numerous times about the situation, then don't expect me to do something far more difficult and far less effective.
and let's use the conservative refrain regarding (pick your subject) of "all we need to do is enforce the laws already on the books, we don't need to create new ones".

The vast majority of children who are sexually molested, or who are victims of other crimes are victimized by their parents, other relatives, ministers and priests, neighbors or other known trusted adults.
The number of children victimized by a stranger via the Internet is insignificant and can easily be prevented by responsible parental attention, instruction and supervision.
For the Repukes to use the safety of Children as an excuse for their unwarranted intrusion into and violation of the right to privacy is a LIE (something the Repukes are famous for).
Behind this proposed Republican/Nazi law are perverts who are obsessed with the sexuality of consenting adults. Closet queens who became hysterical over Bill Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinski. Republican politicians who seek sex with children, or who like Rush Limbaugh, take along Viagra when they jet to countries notorious for child prostitution. Republican Congressmen who like to wear diapers while hookers whip their hineys.
The sick people we need to protect us all from are Republicans.
Unfortunately, this sort of "think of the children!" criminal stupid is a truly bipartisan affair. DiFi in particular has been a long-time advocate of it (CDA, COPPA, etc).
If republicans cared about children they would provide funding for schools, healthcare, condoms, etc. Instead they choose buggering and abortion. Great thought process.
Again, Congress has no clue about technology. Maybe they can get old Ted "Tubes" Stevens to help write the bill from his jail cell.

Not only is this absurdly intrusive, but it is both extremely difficult to comply with (at least for home users and small internet cafes) and nearly trivial to circumvent. If you use TOR (the onion router) as a proxy for all your internet access, then the packets going out over the public internet are encrypted and sent to destinations that have nothing to do with who you are actually talking to. Further, the wireless router can only identify individual computers by their MAC address. Now, this was originally hardware defined... but on Linux and many other operating systems the user can change it. From there, it's trivial to write a program that refreshes the connection with a brand new MAC address every n minutes. Voila, the router logs are now completely useless for even identifying the computers that connected to the internet through that router, let alone figuring out what happened.
and only let Windows be the gov approved operating system for public consumption and use.

A few nights ago my partner had taken our dog out for his last nightly walk, just down the block on our street there were officers chatting up one of the local West Hollywood hustler, homeless street bum, and probable narc.
They were out just across the street from an apt bldg where they had made a bust last week so they have been working this area like mad dogs. Anyway as my partner walked by with the dog o9n his leash, He was stopped and asked to produce his ID. He looked at the officer and said what? You cant just stop me on the street for no reason. The officer said Don't get smart with me.
So he showed him his ID and after the officer gave it back to him he said " Now you pick that dog up and carry him back to where you came from. By that time he was too pissed to get the officers name and badge number. Not that it would have actually done any good.
He came in and told me this, I immediately said What is this Germany, Papers Please. After the last 8 years of BushCo it really pisses me off hearing repubtards with their latest talking points about the Dems trying to take our freedoms away. Have they not been paying attention?

But I am sure it is easier for republicans to sacrifice somebody else's civil rights, than to actually address the real issues affecting children. Since that would most likely mean republicans would have to give up their previous tax cuts.
Fuck the lot of them...
Mmmm. The modest proposal that you should give up your civil rights for more safety. And this time it's "for the children." It always works with conservatives, and always fails with liberals. All this power grab will do is make some product that screens/anonymizes your internet actions very popular.

Yet these same pukes have to stick their asses into the lives of every American to tell them what to do behind closed doors, how to tell women that they cannot use abortion, but yet have zero birth control and preach “yes to virginity”, break the laws of the land to have the country engage in a war that was based on lies, and still spout the party line of NO NEW TAXES and vote against the Recovery bill but cry because their state or city won’t get a lot of the new funds.
The day is coming where these nutjobs are going to be out of leadership positions and the Rethug party will be replaced by moderates. The third party Regugs will move to Alaska to lick the ground in front of the soon to be replaced governor Payrod Palin.
It's always for the "children". How can any spineless congressman not vote for a bill called the "Internet Stopping Adults Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth Act,"? It's like putting "buy this magazine or we shoot this dog" on your cover.
There's always CAT 5. Your current wireless set up with best practices "probably" is secure for a while yet but I'm one of two people I know who have gone "old school" and just strung cable around the place. The cable snaking up from behind the living room couch isn't super cool but there is only so much time between snow and mosquito seasons to compute out on a lawn chair in Minnesota anyway. And if anybody wants to hack my place, it means they do it the old way -- or they try to read my screen radiations-- but it won't be because of a wireless mouse, keyboard, NIC or router.
This bill, along with the bank bailout and the proposed new tax on driver mileage, is proof that the GOP and the Dems both will stop at nothing to restrict the liberty and mobility of the average American by any means possible. First take away the jobs, then pin us to one locale. Then they can regulate us, monitor our politics, and confiscate what property we have left after distress sales.
No, I don't believe that this is about child pornography. FBI investigates that only if and when public pressure gets fiery. In the South, successful investigations almost always come from other FBI office locations. This is about owning our lives, our incomes, our privacy. Criminals, as always, will be permitted to keep their privacy unless they infringe on the Man's rackets.

Whether republicans OR democrats try to legislate this kind of government intrusion in the name of homeland security or the war on terror or because they are preoccupied about other people actions and whether or not they are moral, this type of legislation goes too far. At some point, you simply have to say that enough is enough. You may only whittle away my civil liberties up to a certain point and only for a damn good reason. This is almost classically fascist, big brother type of legislation, something that would have been put into place in Mussolini's Italy or any Nazi or Soviet occupied state. It shouldn't be being considered in the United States. If there are security concerns and issues around the internet, they should be discussed and a plan of action that doesn't decimate civil liberties should be instituted but this should not be done by politicians who know nothing about the medium of the internet. That would be like letting a sanitation worker perform brain surgery. And, note that this shitty legislation is being proposed by republicans, those guys who claim to hate big government. Yet they want the government to oversee the entire country's internet activity forever. (This coming from the political party that claims that it would like to see government so small that they could drown it in a bathtub.) If this is the case, we might all as well be in leg and wrist irons with Cornyn standing over us with his whip. Some things I will not accept. Being forced to keep a log of internet activity that takes place through my router is one of those things. I simply would not do it. Live Free or Die.
children on the internet (while harassing and preying on underaged congressional pages via texting with obscene language and solicitations)? Someone should tell Cornyn to look into what his republican colleague, Foley has already enacted legislation-wise and tell him it's already taken care of so he doesn't have to worry about it.
advocacy groups out there that are working on this very problem. They likely have ideas as to how to deal with the problem of protecting children on the internet that do not impose draconian big brother government mandates across the board as this tripe does. If our elected representatives are concerned about this issue, they should consult with such advocacy groups that have been working on the problem and have ideas as to how to deal with it to get it done right. I would trust legislation originating from ideas proposed by groups that have thought this thing through rather than yee haw political hacks who work from the gut and not from the head on this or any other issue involving civil liberties, my civil liberties, your civil liberties, everyone's civil liberties.
One last thought on this issue is that, if you don't like proposed legislation, if you haven't already done so, you can always call your elected representatives to ask that they not support this legislation.
I would assume that non-compliance with this law (and many many others) is really the only solution to these types of attacks of human beings freedom of association and speech.
