Andrea Mitchell interviewed Al Gore today to talk about climate-change deniers, since Copenhagen, with its many moving parts, has begun. And with the summit, the rash of climate-change and global-warming deniers has really stepped up. What makes these people deny proven science? Digby and Paul Krugman discuss the hatred of reality by conservative loons.

Anyway, Gore asks the question that a Sarah Palin could never answer logically: Why are the polar ice caps disappearing? The batshit crazy deniers like Palin don't know the caps exist maybe because she can't see them from her house...

MITCHELL: Congratulations on the book. You write in your new book, "Our Choice," "The global warming deniers' arguments are fraudulent and often nonsensical." Yet even today, one of the best-known voices in the Republican Party, Sarah Palin, has an op-ed in the Washington Post, and she is escalating a major attack against Copenhagen and against -- against the summit. Palin calls it "junk science." She says, "The agenda-driven policies being pushed in Copenhagen won't change the weather, but they would change our economy for the worst."

What's your response to that?

GORE: Well, you know, the -- the global warming deniers persist in this air of unreality. After all, the entire north polar icecap, which has been there for most of the last 3 million years, is disappearing before our eyes. Forty percent is already gone. The rest is expected to go completely within the next decade. What do they think is causing this?

The mountain glaciers in every region of the world are melting, many of them at an accelerated rate, threatening drinking supplies -- drinking water supplies and agricultural water supplies. We have these record storms, drought, floods, fires, three deaths (ph) in the American West, climate refugees beginning now, expected to rise to the hundreds of millions unless we take action.

These effects are taking place all over the world exactly as predicted by the scientists, who have warned for years that, if we continue putting 90 million tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere every day, the accumulation -- that's going to trap lots more heat, raise temperatures, and cause all of these consequences that are already beginning.

MITCHELL: Well, one of the things that she has written recently on Facebook is that this is doomsday scare tactics pushed by an environmental priesthood that makes the public feel like owning an SUV is a sin against the planet.

GORE: Well, the scientific community has worked very intensively for 20 years within this international process, and they now say the evidence is unequivocal. A hundred and fifty years ago this year was the discovery that CO-2 traps heat. That is a -- a principle in physics. It's not a question of debate. It's like gravity; it exists.

Like gravity it exists. You see, there's the proven. In the mind of conservatives, it doesn't matter what's provable -- only what can be denied. And as we've come to expect from Fred Hiatt and the Washington Post, they reprinted a Sarah Palin op-ed that is littered with so much false information on climate change that it boggles the mind. They have turned the news paper op-ed section into a celebrity rag that could care less about truth and accuracy. I'm shocked the op-ed didn't come with Sarah Palin celebrity photos.

Get Energy Smart Now writes: Fred Hiatt jumps the shark in dragging Washington Post into the sewers: Publishes Sarah Palin OPED contradicted by links within the OPED

Amid the Copenhagen climate summit, Fred Hiatt has chosen to descend the paper to a new low, seeming to prove that there is somehow a balance between outright falsehoods and ignorance, on the one side, and scientific knowledge and honest discourse on the other.

Sarah Palin, fresh off a shallowly ignorant Facebook post calling on President Obama not to go to Copenhagen, has an opinion piece appearing in Wednesday’s Washington Post (following up on Palin’s ghostwritten absurdity published by the Post in July). And, the factual dissections of her falsehoods are already piling on. In terms of those dissections, what is amazing is that one doesn’t have to go beyond the Post itself to find them. I very rarely so heavily quote another blogger, but the always worth reading Tim Lambert has a brutal damning post, The Washington Post can’t go out of business fast enough....read on

And here's a response to Dean Baker at the dubious Politico:

Dean Baker: It’s amazing that the Post feels the need to print a column that is chock full of distortions and misinformation just because it was written by a celebrity (Sarah Palin’s pro-global warming diatribe).

She notes that the measures to contain global warming are projected to lead to job loss, commenting on a $4.2 billion fund to retrain workers. Of course, almost every policy leads to some job loss. For example, Governor Palin’s proposal to destroy Alaska’s environment to get more gas and oil would lead job loss in the shipping and dock industries for those involved in importing oil, if her claims about the impact of this oil on imports were actually true.

Of course, Ms. Palin apparently does not care about workers enough to suggest any fund to help these people get new jobs. Of course the job loss from the huge increase in defense spending over this decade swamps any reasonable estimate of the job impact of measures to restrict global warming. But Ms. Palin doesn’t seem concerned about the workers who lose their job for this reason either.Ms. Palin is only concerned about the possible negative effects of policies to save the planet for our children and grandchildren, not about jobs and the economy more generally. I suppose it would be rude [to note] that the most obvious beneficiaries in her story are the oil and gas industries.

Some other planets and moons are warming, some are cooling. Could be their rotation around the sun, could be their connections to other bodies close to them, could be a million and one things. The problem for people like you, well one of them, is that the climate is extremely complex and your opinions are simplistic. To extend the argument onto other planets you'd have to have a deep understanding of ecology, cosmology, the environments of other planets and moons, environmental science, oceanography, thermodynamics, amongst other fields. In which of these are you qualified to speak? If a part of the world is having record cold temperatures you post a link saying as much and claim it is proof of a grand global warming hoax. If you look at past ice ages there were parts of the world who actually got hotter than before the ice ages. Was it proof that there was no ice age? If the warming continues the conveyor belt that sends warmer waters to places that would otherwise be much colder could stop. Some of these places would get colder. Would that be proof of the global warming "hoax"? Idiots like you would probably claim as much. There are so many factors that effect temperatures that most people are not aware of. For example, every city is a few degrees hotter than they would be if there were no people because our bodies give off heat. There are endless complexities that you'll never know about or contemplate. Little to no "deniers", even Bjorn Lomborg, claim that CO2 has no effect on the warming climate, they just claim that too much attention is paid to that one part of the warming and that other factors have larger effects than environmentalists are saying. Problem is, whenever they present these factors actual scientists shoot them down. For example, your Mars nonsense.

http://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warmin...

"Not all planets in the solar system are warming"

"Only 6 planets or moons out of the 100+ bodies in the solar system have been observed to be warming. On the other hand, Uranus is cooling (Young 2001)"

It won't stop you though. You won't change your position on the issue, the only thing that will change is the other crap you throw against the wall, hoping it will stick. CO2 emissions are one part of a much bigger issue: the connection industrial and human societies have with the environment. The economic system we have is not sustainable, CO2 emissions is one issue among many that will have to be dealt with in the future and people like you will always be on the side of the status quo. I hope you are at least profiting off of your self delusions. Otherwise, what the hell is your excuse for being so willfully ignorant?

I will only be happy when it is determined that Al's anus is cooling....

Not sure what Den7422's fixation with Al Gore's anus is about, but those sort of comments do not do wonders for any credibility Den thinks they had on this topic.

Let me help you in case you "skimmed over" some "details" in it:

"Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface.

He claims that carbon dioxide has only a small influence on Earth's climate and virtually no influence on Mars.

But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin.

Most scientists now fear that the massive amount of carbon dioxide humans are pumping into the air will lead to a catastrophic rise in Earth's temperatures, dramatically raising sea levels as glaciers melt and leading to extreme weather worldwide.

Abdussamatov remains contrarian, however, suggesting that the sun holds something quite different in store."

Milquetoast's picture

period.

(shit melts) when it gets warmer.

My point is that the slight rise in temperature over the last century may not have much to do at all with the carbon dioxide...

The sun is getting hotter.

Why do conservative Americans subscribe to "I Can Believe ANYTHING I Want To Believe!" ??

I think it has a lot to do with our culture's notion of what is religion - a system of beliefs.

In my mind real religion is all about two things - the inner quest for peace and understanding, and my outward behavior towards others. It has absolutely nothing to do with beliefs.

But in America, one is free to belief whatever one wants to, because religion is defined as one's beliefs.

We have also been plagued with "The Power Of Positive Thinking". People have been led to believe that psyching themselves up, visualizing success, is a way to cope with life, instead of relying on facts, analysis, and acquiring requisite skills.

a fairly large number of the conservatives have what I call faux "christianity" where religion is concerned.
What you are talking about is entirely different and is the way they should be, but this would require a person to adopt a caring attitude toward one's fellowman. That is something I think would be extremely difficult for them to achieve.

that bizarre "God wants you to be rich and do whatever you like" mentality. I really don't know where or how they came up with that one. It certainly has nothing to do with Christianity as it was previously practiced for nearly 2000 years. It's a uniquely American invention, having nothing in common with the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized poverty, humility, generosity, and most of all, SACRIFICE. But these loons have somehow talked themselves into believing that all of those things - things their supposed GOD said were essential to life - are actually undesirable and to be ignored. Just watch what Wall street does with their brand new Carbon derivatives deck. Do a search on Blyth Masters and what she is up to now at JP Morgan.

Maybe if glamourdammerung was actually talking to someone WITH a brain, that might be true. As it is, that's debatable.

What is the matter Truthseeker?

That type of comment was acceptable to you when you said it of me.

Lambasting Al Gore and others who are warning us about global climate change only serves to amplify the hyperbole characteristic of this burgeoning number of Chicken Littles crying that the sky is falling.

We humans are a puny infestation on this amazing planet. How arrogant to presume we're going to have any lasting impact on Earth. We will simply go the way of the dinosaur -- no huge loss.

The real issue is that we disrespect what we have and fail to understand that our ecosystem tends toward a balance that is beyond our control. When it is time for Earth to roll over in the grass and scrape us off her backside, we'll just have to go along for the ride.

what Al Gore really wants from all his bloviating about Climate Change. Believe me if there was not away for wall Street to cash in on Climate Change, we would not even be having this little chat.

When, will I see that?

Why don't they just say, "If you think Venus is a great planet, the Earth will impress you more."?

"Why are the polar ice caps disappearing?"

Perhaps because all of the arctic air needed to keep them frozen is now flooding the United States?

this planet cannot sustain handling 7 billion humans, sucking the resources out of the place............... especially when 3.5 billion in asia strive to have as much junk as americans.......

its the final countdown......................

Yep

That's the main reason nothing we do to "correct" the situation will have any effect. The one thing that might actually do the trick is the one thing the vast majority of people flatly refuse to do - stop reproducing. You don't even need complicated scientific explanations; it's just simple math. But there's always some excuse why it can't even be considered. So the biosphere will drown in our shit.

But it was inevitable from the beginning. Once you have a species capable of changing its environment to suit itself, it will ALWAYS do exactly that. The end result we're seeing now. This was always the end of the story; we just didn't know it until recently. And even if we had known it ahead of time, I'm pretty damn sure we wouldn't have cared. Selfishness and short-sightedness is built into the species.

Maybe on some other planet, they're getting it right. One can only hope.

There IS a difference between a "LEAK" and "HACK"...
... Reporters who use "LEAK" as their description of how these e-mails were obtained are hacks. Reporters that correctly discribe how these e-mails were "HACKED" are journalists reporting the illegal THEIFT of PRIVATE discourse.

Which is Andrea Mitchell...

I am a progressive democrat that believes that we should end fossil fuel use as soon as possible to preserve the quality of air, water and earth. I think that we should issue a strong windfall profit tax on all fossil fuel abusers and use that money to force investment in alternative and renewable sources of energy.

However, global warming / climate change is a strawman to scare people into accepting a cap and trade scheme that profits only the rich, and taxes everyone else. It is an Enron derivatives floor that will create another bubble, that the top 5% will benefit from greatly, and do nothing for everyone else, except leave holding the bag again when the bubble bursts in 10 years.

The focus should be on cleaning the environment, not this dubious human contribution to CO2 emissions. Almost every credible scientist agrees that humans are responsible for no more than 4% of all greenhouse gases. So, what do we do about the other 96%? And what if 10 years from now, the earth is still warming (if it even still is)? Do we eliminate the cap and trade scheme? Of course not.

This is a sham and a scam. Leftists should be protesting this cap and trade and stop taking the Kool Aid that we are causing the oceans to rise. We are not. At least to any degree we can stop it by stopping driving SUVs. It is just stupid to think so.

We should stop driving SUV’s because of what they do to our air and water quality. Get off the warming thing, and realize what the plan is. They are looking for a new thing to trade like bogus loan packages.

Watch this first, get all the facts, then decide (Hint, CO2 is produced from the warming of the earth, not the other way around):

Again, to put the pejorative of “denier” on all who question this Copenhagen agenda is disingenuous, at best. And blinded by an uncontrollable fear, at worst. We can not change the temperature of the earth, up or down, substantially. It is hubris to think so.

Those are all good first steps with no real over-arching theory, but reasonableness.

It's kind of like 19th century England when they blamed diseases on bad smells, and started better sanitation, street cleaning, and encouraged the cleaning of drains. They were doing all the right things, but not based on any underlying idea of bacteria.

However global climate change is no strawman (argumentum ad absurdum), but the best science we have right now. And I don't think anyone is saying Humanity is the sole cause, just a contributing cause, and it is ourselves and our environment who will suffer the consequences, the earth will continue it's merry way with or without us.

Again, suppose that even cutting the purported 4% we contribute does nothing to curtail warming, was it worth a cap and trade derivative? No, I don't believe.

There are better solutions to cleaning air and water. Tax the abusers. But, I do not believe that we will continue to warm and warm and warm. It will stop and reverse as it always has. Humans are so short sighted.

Plus, we are continually making more people faster than they are dying. What about a cap and trade on the number of people we are adding to the carbon footprint? No one wants to advocate child caps and trades.

Economies must grow, and to grow, you need more people. So, tax the abusers, not the users. And invest in future technologies so that we can support eventual 15 billion or more humans on the planet.

Socialism? Whatever. A regulatory agency is part of what the Government is paid to support. Regulate and tax, but the warming thing is out of our control. We do not affect it enough to warrant this draconian step.
