I usually don't handle the questions for AOL, just supply the idea and the post. Michael asked the poll question: "Are you a fan of Glenn Beck?" and it links back to David's post. So far AOL users do like Beck. The voting has just begun so have a little fun. I wonder how many of the voters who like him have actually watched his silly routine....

This is shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday. So I guess John's column has had an effect.
People do love to slow down to ogle car crashes and train wrecks. Hence Beck's popularity.
The results aren't very surprising, either....these nuts love crazy evangelist preachers like Beck.
He is popular for the same reason that reality shows are popular.
He's dysfunctional, as are so many characters in reality shows.
Seeing people more screwed up than they are, is reassuring to the dysfunctional viewers.

Exactly. This is why Dateline/Chris Hansen's "To Catch a Predator" thrives- it's an ethically dubious carnival freak-show masquerading as journalism, yet I'm fascinated by it. The reason is simple; while I'm watching it, I actually feel better about myself, specifically because I don't try to meet juveniles on the interwebs for sex (yet it always makes me wonder, is there something wrong with me that I'm glad there isn't something wrong with me?).
So yes, we can't dismiss that quite a lot of the folks professing to "like" Beck do so in a "negative-appreciative" state.
Not really Beck, but a post on a poll about Beck. I'm sure it will be a hot topic at the water cooler today.
Anyone who used to like to go in the sideshows at the circus will probably be a fan. The bearded lady, the half monkey boy and Glenn Beck, the possibly half sane man.

frightening that so many people like this guy. I live in Indiana and I am always hearing about how great Glenn Beck is. I have even been seeing a lot of 9 - 12 t-shirts lately. I just don't understand it at all. Can people not see that this guy stood by and said nothing about King George while he was setting the house on fire, but yet he bashes Obama for everything under the sun.
I compare people who watch Beck to those who slow down to look at a traffic accident -- they want to see a wreck.
beck is an entertainer plain and simple. His schtick is to be outrageous. He acts as he does to garner an audience who either (shudder) thinks like him, or who simply cannot pass a gruesome automobile accident without looking for the bodies.
I personally think of him as a total misogynist, a racist, an isolationist and one who is trying with all his might to get into politics (from the reich wing side, of course).

I just think Beck, like O'Reilly, and Hannity are comic gold. It's a shame though that the latter two gotta go make the Irish look even worse - that, I resent them for.
What's scary though are the people that don't think Beck's a big blubbering buffoon, and even more frightening are those that take Beck very seriously.

You see, I was the only Atheist in Utah* for a few years of my life.
I was an Anthropology student and focused a lot of study into religion. Mormons. Are. Fascinating.

I hated Fast and Testimony Sunday. As kids we really didn't understand the concept of fasting. All that crying from people bearing their testimony.
I remember roughly what my last one was. Basically I bore my testimony that I had no testimony. That a testimony was a way to an end not the end itself. If it doesn't grow it dies. And that all testimonies sound essentially the same. Because of this sameness the congregation tends to fall asleep.
I can't remember if I did this immediately before or after I wrote a letter requesting excommunication (more of an administrative thing in Mormonism.)
And Obama's approval ratings and popularity are also up? Something doesn't quite add up there.

I mean, I love the guy. I think he's the most hilarious thing since Bill Hicks. I'm a real big fan. I also think the guy's an asshole, a liar, an opportunist, a manipulator, a user and a generally all-around bad guy. But he sure cracks me up.
If Bill Hicks were alive today, I could see him doing whole 15 minute bit on Beck, and it wouldn't be pretty either.

I hardly ever agreed with him, but for quite a while, his show was interesting and entertaining. Then the right wing nut case came out and I was done. Now, it's way worse! To have this guy on tv doing his revival meeting, stirring up the crazies with his "tears" and "rants" about how our world is doomed because poor, sick, elderly and children have a government that might make life a little easier for them for the first time in over 30 YEARS is crazy. He's the kind of guy that would help his buds beat the heck out of a girl having a seizure while claiming to be "driving out the devils".
These people, Beck, and those like him are dangerous and scare the socks off of ME. And their "followers" are the ones who watch the phony preachers perform their phony "healings" and faint like leaves dropping off the trees in their "rapturous' ecstasy of "belief" that they've "SEEN A MIRACLE". They can't see the truth and when it's shown to them, dismiss it because they'd RATHER believe the LIE. We just went through 8 years of an alcoholic president who "admittedly" DRANK while president and now we will have another 8 years of emotionally crippled alcoholics and "ex" druggies stirring up their BASE. It's like allowing some nut job to scream "FIRE" in a dark movie theater and then patting him on the back and saying "Great job, Brownie" for each dead, dying, or wounded person he managed to put in danger.
Currently under 50% of those participating in the poll like Beck and those who do are, surprise, in predominantly red, red, red states.
Say what you want about CNBC but at least "Fast Money" tries to relay useful and actionable information for its viewers from 5-6pm Eastern. What are Beck's viewers gaining?

I went to the AOL site and read the comments there... honestly, it made me feel sick. I am eating my breakfast and reading this drivel... it's frightening, actually, that people (and lots of them) think the way they do. It's really weird. I love America, but I'm glad I live in Australia where there are less of these kinds of freaks per square mile. We do have our problems - Queensland for one - but really nothing like you guys. Do you think they're putting something in the water or the chemtrails, what is it that makes people so freaking brainless??

I am thinking it's the water and the air, somehow I am immune or at least I can still figure out complex problems and situations. Every one has different levels of inteligence, the guys following Beck are at the lowest primal inteligence in my mind. Sex, sports, and beer or God God God, Jesus is lord. Any combination of those are already too much for most to handle it seems.
Ps. John I am not knocking sports, I am just not into it myself never really was, please don't look at me as a lower life form now. I like interactive competitions, FPS(online shooter sports). My interests are always changing though, maybe someday in the future I could change my interests.

Why are you all so freaked out by Glenn Beck anyway? There are theatrics on both sides - it's called RATINGS, people - does that make all liberals "sheep" for watching the truly bizarre Keith Olbermann Show, for example?
It's not all black and white....there's a lot of gray in the middle. Think for yourselves, try to be more open-minded and less judgmental, and you may realize it's OK to have different opinions. Wouldn't life be a drag if we didn't - or couldn't?

Over here in Europe, I go to Crooks and Liars every day. I get all my news from the Internet. Even when I was in the U.S. (I'm American born and raised) I didn't watch TV. AM radio is right-wing commute brainwashing. It's quite amazing. George Orwell nailed it.
