Cheney sought waterboarding of prisoner to 'uncover' nonexistent Saddam-Al Qaeda link
This is incredible but not surprising news. Robert Windrem, who covered terrorism for NBC, reports:
*Two U.S. intelligence officers confirm that Vice President Cheney’s office suggested waterboarding an Iraqi prisoner, a former intelligence official for Saddam Hussein, who was suspected to have knowledge of a Saddam-al Qaeda connection. *The former chief of the Iraq Survey Group, Charles Duelfer, in charge of interrogations, tells The Daily Beast that he considered the request reprehensible. *Much of the information in the report of the 9/11 Commission was provided through more than 30 sessions of torture of detainees...read on
Read the entire story. What this report says is that the Bush administration took an active role in how torture was being used and their purposes were purely political and not to keep America safe. Richard Wolffe says the same thing to Nora on MSNBC.
Cheney and his band of inquisitors wanted to find something that could justify the Iraq war to the American people after all the lies were uncovered for us to see. And there was nothing. NO WMD's in Iraq and no connection between Saddam and al-Qaeda. Cheney willingly promoted the use of torture for his own political gains. Wow. He should be prosecuted just for that action because he even violated the CIA torture memo guidelines.
Cheney knows this information is going to come out so he's taking to the airwaves to try and turn the discussion all around. Lawrence Wilkerson has come out and said this:
Lawrence Wilkerson essentially confirmed this today.
Likewise, what I have learned is that as the administration authorized harsh interrogation in April and May of 2002--well before the Justice Department had rendered any legal opinion--its principal priority for intelligence was not aimed at pre-empting another terrorist attack on the U.S. but discovering a smoking gun linking Iraq and al-Qa'ida.
So furious was this effort that on one particular detainee, even when the interrogation team had reported to Cheney's office that their detainee "was compliant" (meaning the team recommended no more torture), the VP's office ordered them to continue the enhanced methods. The detainee had not revealed any al-Qa'ida-Baghdad contacts yet. This ceased only after Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, under waterboarding in Egypt, "revealed" such contacts. Of course later we learned that al-Libi revealed these contacts only to get the torture to stop.
There in fact were no such contacts. (Incidentally, al-Libi just "committed suicide" in Libya. Interestingly, several U.S. lawyers working with tortured detainees were attempting to get the Libyan government to allow them to interview al-Libi....)
Did you notices that there was very little media coverage if any on al-Libi's suicide? It's like he never even existed for the Villagers.

I guess the Bushie can't use the "non-combatant detainee" ruse with that one.
The lack of coverage on the al-Libi suicide is scary. Like Mike Connell's plane crash, it raises suspicions.
on both counts...
And it is very scary! There's some outrageously unbelievable clandestine criminal acts going on behind the scenes and for the DICK, there's no getting out of it. He's guilty all the way to the bank!
There was no connection, plain and simple. It doesn't matter what he says or how he wants to paint the picture. There were many of us who never bought his song and dance, never believed for one second he had any intention to keep anyone safe, including Americans, and all he was interested in was money and power, then power and money... and it's never enough. Therefore he's trying all he can think of to talk it up and talk himself out of this bottomless pit he's created for himself. Rot in hell, you DICK!
Obama and the democrat's a...
They should start some serious actions of being a democrat or at least an elected official which believe in our constitution , bill or rights , laws and the right of the people to run this country and not this Global Empire..
I believe as long as you have this Global Empire they are going to control our elected officials..
The Global Empire has too much of our tax money to give to the elected official to control their actions to keep their power..
Just think it the corporations were not Global then they would not be jerking Americans around like this...

... pardon me while my tinhat is spinning but an administration that'll stoop so low as to waterboard false confessions linking Al-Queda to Iraq is an administration that would *RELY* on a "modern day pearl harbor" functioning as the American equivilent of the Reichstag Fire to conveniently be a day that "changed everything", especially if the same administration is stacked to the gills with former neoliberal turned neo-conservative PNAC/AIPAC idealogues that Reagan and Bush I wrote off as "the crazies", and rightly so.
To pull all of this off requires a complicit and/or complacent mainstream press, especially highly concentrated monopolized corporate press that couldn't do its job (i.e informing the public) for fear of losing its job (i.e. access and protection of anonymous government sources) and thus no longer being able to tell the damned difference between a *FREE* press and a *STATE* press, resigning themselves to the role as the Volkisher Beobachter -- a convenient propaganda organ.
Our press is lucky I'm not President Obama right now because I would immediately sign *TWO* executive orders effective immediately that repeal portions of the Deregulation Act that enabled the corporate press to be so concentrated and corporate owned and controlled, granting the FCC power to regulate the cable and satellite broadcasting industries, and re-instating The Fairness Doctrine to the letter ... or face being *RAIDED* by the Feds to find out what the CEOs and CFOs knew and when did they know it, and daring Congress to stop me for that executive order would be drafted and signed using the power of the unitary executive. That brings me to my second executive order that completely dissolves the powers of the unitary executive, obliterating further use and abuse by me and forthcoming Presidents.
The story is pretty clear at this point:
(1) Bush assumes office, and the national security focus shifts to missles and Iraq because (i) defense contracts are big money; (ii) Bush's team is heavy on cold war experience, and has virtually no experience with the Middle East; (iii) Bush, et al. believe the Clinton administration was unreliable, and refuses to take any advice regardless of its merit; (iv) Bush desperately wants to get out from beneath his father's shadow; and (v) Iraq sits on top of the world's second largest oil reserve, and the Bush administration is eager to establish control over a reliable supply of oil unencumbered by Saudi politics and dictates;
(2) 9-11 occurs and the Bush administration circles the wagons;
(3) Bush demands that Taliban turn over bin Laden and other al Queda members, Taliban refuses, and United States attacks Afghanistan;
(4) Al Queda and Taliban are ill-prepared for the response and are routed;
(5) Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al. seize upon the nation's fear and emerging nationalism to plot removal of Sadam Hussein, discounting all evidence of lack of connection between Iraq and 9-11;
(6) Bush administration manufactures evidence to support a link between Iraq and 9-11, obtaining a document which purports to demonstrate attempt to purchase uranium, using an aluminum cylinder as proof of an active nuclear weapons program, and describing information obtained from operatives supporting a link;
(7) We now know the document was forged, the aluminum tube description was bogus, and the information obtained by operatives was obtained through torture, when suspects rounded up by the Bush administration apparently "confessed" after being subjected to torture;
(8) Bush and Cheney and Rice make the argument that Saddam was responsible for 9-11, and Cheney fingers Powell as the guy to address the UN, obviously because (i) Powell is military, (ii) Powell had a high approval rating, and was seen as credible, (iii) nobody trusted Cheney, (iv) Bush was incapable of delivering a speech, and (v) Colin Powell's race would blunt accusations that the United States was pursuing an imperialist campaign.
(9) Powell travels to Langley, discovers that evidence of link is pretty bad, but agrees to address the UN anyway, Powell being a good company man and apparently having abandoned any shred of conscience;
(10) Bush, et al. have no credible evidence of WMDs, but figure they'll find something in the desert somewhere that they might use later to justify an invasion;
(11) American press cheers, afraid of being accused of insufficient patriotism and lacking any kind of work ethic whatsoever;
(12) Saddam plays a game of chicken and refuses to leave Iraq, counting on the UN inspectors to confirm Iraq's lack of WMDs to the Bush administration, miscalculating that Bush, et al. are actually interested in evidence;
(13) US invades Iraq and surprise! no WMDs! Bush, et al. continue to make the case anyway, adhering to Rove's strategy of projecting confidence and competence;
(14) Apparently having no idea what occupation means to a country because they avoided service in Vietnam, Bush and Cheney are genuinely surprised that Iraqis want the United States gone;
(15) Bush and Cheney, however, are unwilling to abandon Iraq because Bush will be blamed for its failure as a state and because the primary objective, i.e., securing Iraq's oil fields, has not been achieved;
(16) Bush and others gradually admit there were no WMDs, although Cheney continues to make the case because Tim Russert seems afraid to challenge him;
(17) Iraq spirals out of control, and Bush ups the ante by committing more troops;
(18) Colin Powell watches from the sideline, apparently afraid to confirm the Bush administration's bad faith;
(19) Bush and Rice admit that no connection existed between Al Queda and Iraq, and Rice argues that they never made that case, even though televised footage plainly demonstrates otherwise;
(20) Cheney refuses to condede anything, insisting there was a connection and that WMDs were in Iraq, even though he cannot prove either statement;
(21) Original bases for invading Iraq are demonstrated to be hollow, because no WMDs were present, Iraq was not connected to 9-11, and evidence shows that US engaged in torture that it accused Hussein of practicing.

Justice will never be served in this country. Somebody needs to throw a potato sack over Cheney and throw him in a plane to Spain.
This is disgusting news. Utterly stomach-churning for its sheer base depravity. If Cheney is not indicted after this latest outrage then the USA can no longer hope to call itself a civilized nation. Shameful. Totally shameful.
I agree, Joe. Even George Lucas couldn't think up a villain worse than this real live human monster, who would sacrifice literally thousands of innocent lives all for power and profit.

This isn't even the first report about it, it's just more corroboration to an earlier story.
The Vice President of the United States ordered POWs tortured until they fabricated a story that he wanted to use to sell a war.
This should be as big as Iran-Contra (and hopefully with real results).
Cheney should be f---ing shot.
they used torture to protect themselves cheney/BUSH and company. the WMD story was falling apart. the media was airing different stories putting a lot of heat on BUSH. they used torture to piss off the opposition. they provided reasoning to be in iraq. i don't know if it was for rationale of the war,continuation or as a mouse trap for al queda or some taliban from afghanistan. of course, i could be wrong. i have to believe they could have lied about what info they did get maybe not. i'll bet there was plenty of recruiting in the middle east after those previous photo(s) came out. that's what they wanted. it serves several purposes. one of them providing the perception they wanted amongst the amercian
people. this was effective at heightening the fearmongering and the fight them over there so we don't have to here. BUSH/cheney wanted blowback.
They tortured al-Libi for an Iraq-Al Qaeda connection before going to war. They knew that there intelligence was bullshit, and they needed some "testimony" to prop up some bullshit justification. This wasn't just covering their tracks for an honest mistake.
The latest allegations from Wilkerson are that Cheney authorized torture before the Justice Dept. memos were written, proving that the memos were just a post hoc justification ass-covering.
Cheney was bent on this from the beginning and his dreams were answered... sheeple willing to do his bidding, with nobody saying "No you big fucktard! I'm not doing that! You want torture? Do it yourself!!" Which of course he wouldn't... he's an instigator, nothing else. And empty, evil windbag who thinks he's above the law.
And his minions, a$$-kissers, and sycophants who went along with him are equally guilty of his crimes by association. Trials for them all and death would be too swift for them.
Is anyone else getting enraged to the point of nausea about 6 times a day by some angle of this story? When are these torturers going to be held accountable to the rule of law?
I am so fucking angry.
I just sent an e-mail to President Obama to express my disappointment and demand some action. If we don't bring these people to justice, we are truly without any moral compass.

It's almost surreal now, don't you think?! I seriously can't believe it, as it defies all logic and rational thought. I don't know how these people look themselves in the face each morning. Or how they think they can get away with the outrageous fraud they're committing on their families and friends, not to mention their countrymen and countrywomen.

Once again, those on the left have been suckered into letting the Rethuglicans FRAME the debate. The likes of Liz Cheney are shaping the debate as "If your family was being by terrorists..." while the REAL reason for the torture was not to get answers, but the answers the Cheney Administration wanted!!! Dick is still fighting a rear-guard action to justify the invasion of Iraq.
They were torturing people ahead of the Iraq invasion to provide cause, ask al-Libi - oh yeah, you can't because he "suicided" himself in prison in Libya.
Obama won't prosecute him.
Wow. Obama is so bad.

And very politely told President Obama that it is time for the Justice Department to bring down criminal indictments against Cheney and any one else they have ALL THIS BLATANT EVIDENCE against and that their PASSPORTS SHOULD ALSO BE SEIZED as I believe Cheney/Bush etc. are all flight risks!
Don't think they haven't done all the research to see if there is any country that doesn't have a formal extradition treaty with the U.S. I know we've all heard the yacking about Bush and Paraguay, but seriously (and I told Obama this), if we don't bring the force of international law down on these guys (and gals...Condaleeeeeeeza!), soon, some other country may do it for us.
This is already the ultimate in international humiliation for our country (well, besides all the illegal war crimes as in the murdering of innocent human beings in Iraq, the use of depleted uranium, white phosphorus etc.). The whole freakin' world watches CNN! Everyone seems to understand that we are protecting international war criminals and worse!!!......we're allowing them to go on T.V. and try to tell us torture is okay when it is NOT!!!

As Lawrence Wilkerson says:
Doesn't that take away Cheney's argument that they used the torture to keep America safe? They used the fucking torture to try to make somebody say that Saddam had a link to al Qaeda so they would have justification to invade Iraq. In this case at least Cheney used water torture to manufacture information. Go to jail. Go directly to jail and do not pass go and collect $200.

Never believe the lie that 911 caused this. Everything had to do with an illegal, immoral, and unilateral invasion of Iraq. Going back to the secret energy task force to torture and everything else including the outing of Valerie Plame was to justify a war in Iraq that was completely unnecessary. Dick Cheney is the source of all these crimes.
nothing is beyond this craven power mad asshole and his minions. he rules by fear and intimidation. always has, always will. he is a senior member of the bush crime family and deserves prison yet again for his crimes. lets hope Spain get ahold of him before he has that last heart attack.

Amazing that this story followed last night's PBS broadcast of a documentary about secret behind-the-scenes incidents during WWII. One area of investigation was the massacre of hundreds of Poles at Katyn, in eastern Russia. The ever-paranoid "Uncle Joe" Stalin ordered his troops to slaughter the Poles because he thought they would resist the Russian takeover of their country. When the Nazis discovered the bodies during the Russian retreat, they used it for propaganda purposes, but when the Russians advanced again, Stalin ordered the KGB to dig up the bodies and plant documents suggesting the Nazis had faked the Russian culpability, now making it look like the Nazis had been responsible all along.
Am I crazy, or is there a parallel between the Katyn Massacre and Prick Cheney's attempt to involve the Democrats in his illegal torture orders? I mean, the holdover CIA operatives are claiming that Pelosi, Graham, and others had full knowledge of the "enhanced interrogation techniques" (Lutz-speak for "torture") and approved by their silence. As if taking their cues from Cheney, the ops claim they have briefing memos making it clear that the top level Dems were told about waterboarding. But Graham says in no uncertain terms his own records show that he never even met with the intelligence officers on most of the dates they cite.
And now we have evidence Cheney waterboarded to prop up his plans for invading Iraq, to brainwash at least one Iraqi to say that there was, indeed, a Saddam-al Qaida connection, just as the administration was claiming. Cut to the PBS program showing a Katyn citizen who told the Nazis he had witnessed the Russians killing Poles at Katyn. When the KGB got hold of him, they forced him to recant and to say he'd been mistaken, that the murderers at Katyn were not Russians but Nazis. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Cheney = Stalin. The comparison could not be more apt.
"Respect for the rights of others is peace." --Benito Juarez
Cheney didn't just torture, he is a neocon. He was the brain behind Bush's illegal invasion. He is someone who believes he is above the law, a "nobleman" who can lie without guilt to stupid average Americans and soldiers he used to make a fortune. Not to mention he's a deeply fearful, chickenhawk and a coward. People need to get real about who he really is.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
When it became clear (Abu Ghraib photos) that the CIA was torturing during interrogations responsible experts testified that evidence gained through torture inevitably yields false confessions.
So I asked myself, "Why would Bush-Cheney want false confessions? False confessions to what?"
And my guess was "false confessions to the 9-11 attacks, to cover for the real perpetrators."
Well .. here it is.
Not only were Bush-Cheney attempting to get "confessions" to a link between Saddam and al-Qaida, they were DELIBERATELY getting false confessions to MISINFORM the public about the REAL PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF THE 9-11 ATTACKS.

Makes you wonder if the Iranians are right, and maybe the U.S. IS evil.
what's black is white and what's white is black, don't believe me? watch an Iranian film, its generally some of the best cinematic art on the planet. We dont understand a thing about them, and they see right thru us.
If there's one thing we're good at, it's oversimplifying complex issues. Certainly agree that:
1) we're not exposed to enough cultures and tend to stereotype
2) our leaders are generally happy to simplify everything to black and white, good and evil.
I blame the massive imbalance between for-profit and publicly funded media in the U.S. The really enlightening programs, the cutting edge docos, the down-and-dirty journalism, the stuff that is hard to watch but needs to be seen--all of that programming comes from the BBC, ABC (Australia), CBC, SBS, Studio CANAL, all massively publicly funded.
This fact alone goes a long way to explain why Americans are so ignorant as to the machinations of their own country. Without world news and world cinema, we certainly can't gain understanding of the world, only reinforce our uninformed views of the world.
i think i have reached the point where I can say "who cares," I think everyone has to start thinking about this. I have been aware of this crap since 2002-2003, that 6 years plus. Nothing happens! Look you have the former VP going around the country free of any fear of prosecution. And the current president continuing the coverup. His words yesterday were telling.
“The publication of these photos would not add any additional benefit to our understanding of what was carried out in the past by a small number of individuals."

Nothing will happen, we will experience further indoctrination into what will be the new status quo, for if no one is held accountable thats is all that has happened, a new standard has been established.
Get used to it.
using waterboarding to CREATE false intelligence... MAN... that puts is all in context, doesn't it?
Cheney's role in ordering waterboarding to falsely link Iraq to 9/11 is not surprising, but it is not news either. It has been out for several years. See, for example, Jane Mayer's book The Dark Side, and similar work. It's all there.
The use of depleted uranium kinetic energy penetrators to kill tanks in the Gulf War and on the drive into Baghdad in 2003 was not a war crime. DU penetrators were developed because there was no other armor piercing round would penetrate modern Soviet armor in the 1970's and there were thousands of Soviet Bloc tanks poised on the German border to race across the North German Plain through the Fulda Gap to the North Sea. That was how the planners expected World War III to start with this Blitzkrieg of Soviet Bloc armor to the North Sea. The US and NATO had nothing to stop that with until the DU kinetic energy penetrator was developed, first for the A-10 tank killer aircraft's 30mm cannon, then for the main guns of the tanks guarding the border, the M-60 Patton and later the M-1 Abrams. Both the old, nearly retired M-60 Patton and the M-1 Abrams fought in the Gulf War; then the Patton was retired and the M-1 Abrams drove into Baghdad. A-10s killed tanks in both the Gulf War and in 2003 and also in the Balkans when Serbian tanks would fire on crowded marketplaces in Bosnia and Kosovo. That's when DU was used and it worked as advertised, one shot, one kill. That brought a lot of American/UK tank crews home safely in the Gulf War. The claims about DU being some sort of horror weapon that resulted in sickness, death and grotesquely deformed babies were began by Saddam Hussein's propaganda in about 1992 and people still have not realized that this was one of the greatest, long lasting cons of all time. Some of the photos are even of what appear to be Czarist era museum specimens, none of them have anything to do with DU, but they are all part of the DU mythology that leads to allegations of what actually are non-existent war crimes. Shooting bullets at tanks to kill them never has been a crime and still should not be. For those of you who think that DU is still being used, ask one question. Does Al Quaeda have any tanks? Does the modern Taliban have any tanks? Do the insurgents in Iraq have any tanks? Does Hamas have any tanks? Does Hezbollah have any tanks? No, not a single one of those active enemies of the US or of its ally Israel has a single tank. Why then, would anyone be using an anti-tank bullet that is useless against anything else on today's battlefield? No, they would not; it just does not make sense.
