Checking the box score, in the Major League Props: Hall & Oates hit a grand slam as they joined in on the "Sound Strike," tour, errr, I mean 'cancel tour' of musicians standing in solidarity and vocalizing their feelings against Kris Kobach's Arizona hate bill.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that Daryl Hall and John Oates have canceled their post-game concert at Chase Field that had been scheduled to follow a game against the Dodgers on July 2.

Hall and Oates issued the following statement:

"In addition to our personal convictions, we are standing in solidarity with the music community in our boycott of performing in Arizona at this time. We would like to emphasize that this has nothing to do with the management of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have been professional and cooperative throughout our dealings with them. This is our response to a very specific action of the state."

Since both of us have backgrounds in the music industry, Howie Klein and I have been trying to persuade artists not to perform in Arizona since SB1070 was passed. Zack de la Rocha is really a hero here.

Howie has much more:

Other artists who have joined suit include Cypress Hill, Pitbull, Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West, Sonic Youth, Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, Joe Satriani, Tenacious D, Shakira, Massive Attack and Hall & Oates (who were supposed to play at a July 2nd Diamondbacks game). Rage's Zack de la Rocha was organized an Arizona sound strike.

“Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to,” de la Rocha said. “People who are poor like some of us used to be could be forced to live in a constant state of fear while just doing what they can to find work and survive. This law opens the door for them to be shaked down, or even worse, detained and deported while just trying to travel home from school, from home to work, or when they just roll out with their friends.”

The law-- SB 1070-- takes “racial profiling... to a whole new low,” the singer went on. “When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said we are not going to ride the bus until they change the law... What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, ‘We're not going to ride the bus,’ saying we are not going to comply. We are not going to play in Arizona.”

I'm not pushing for a strike against the Diamondbacks players, but Jerry Colangelo and their ownership has been complicit in helping pass SB 1070 and have been big-time Republican shills.

..of all the trash left by people illegally crossing into Arizona. It makes the desert south of Tucson look like a dump. Backpacks, plastic bottles, dirty diapers and when it rains, it washes into the rivers and water supply. Did you know that Phoenix has the second highest kidnap rate in the world, second only to Mexico City? Something needs to be done, maybe this bill isn't it and it will eventually be struck down but our Congress-critters and Senators in Washington ought to heed the call, the warning, the writing on the wall and do something to protect their phony-baloney jobs.

The Bureau of Land Management estimated in 2007 that 24 million pounds of trash had been left by illegal immigrants in the mountains, trails and washes. Each person drops about 8 pounds of trash per person per day. With roughly 500,000 illegals traipsing through the Tucson Sector each year... that's a whole lotta trash. As well as packed, eroded trails, erosion in pristine mountain passes, and the northward spread of invasive plants. It's an ecological disaster. Not to mention the property damage, livestock deaths, etc, etc.

And then there's the 20% of the illegals who have criminal records. And evidence left in the trash points to people coming from countries who harbor terrorists.

But none of that matters of course, because the cops might mess up and ask a couple Latino citizens for their ID. Oh, the horror!

I would like to see where and how people came up with those numbers.

I would also like to see how much garbage people bring into the national parks in the U.S. I'm pretty sure the numbers are pretty close.

Hall & Oates cancelling a gig

Isn't that rewarding Arizona?

Great move by Hall & Oates. The respect in which I had already held them is magnified by this decision.

Also out there, and under-reported, is the fact that the NCAA BCS Championship game will be played in Phoenix next January. While I've heard a lot of calls for the MLB AllStar game to be moved, I've not heard a single call for the NCAA to get out of Arizona.

Obviously, the NCAA MNC ("Mythical National Championship") game is a MUCH larger TV and advertising draw, not to mention the attendance by folks from the two competing schools.

I think we'd do well to begin pressuring the NCAA and the BCS to move the MNC now. If the NCAA couldn't stomach Tim Tebow ads, how on earth can it participate in the racism and bigotry inherent to SB 1070?

State Of Unrest: A New Arizona Law Could Keep Musicians Out

Mutton Jeff's picture

Yes, it's true. Hall and Oates will not be haulin' ass to Arizona. Both of the people who bought tickets will be very upset.

they're playing fair sized venues and getting $100 a ticket. You should be so successful.

i guess, truly, it takes one to know one?

Shouldn't they be out on the front porch rocking and sewing oats?

. . . and some darned fine eyesight to sew those oats. Do they make doilies or afghans, or what, with all those sewn oats?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

illegal immigration is a huge problem, obviously.

but, to focus on some of the victims (yes, i think a lot of people illegally crossing the border are victims [mind you, not the drug/human traffickers and other such dregs]) in order to appease other victims (americans adversely affected), to me, misses the underlying reason people risk it all to cross the border--jobs. no matter how militarized you make a border, given enough incentive, people will still cross.

so, imo, we should crack down, hard, on those that hire the illegals. make it incredibly painful for any employer to hire undocumented workers in order to stop the economic-incentive (for both undocumented worker and employer).

good on them for supporting the rights of U.S. CITIZENS and the importance of protecting our rights from Arizonan assholes who think the rights of Hispanic-Americans should be expendable in order for them to persue their pathetic hatred of the dreaded Other.

¡Muchas gracias Hall y Oates!

Sounds like horse food. Could be they are trying to generate some publicity for themselves, whoever they are....
Did they ever consider making a statement in support of the Arizona retire, the Arizona rancher and the Arizona border patrol all killed by illegal aliens? Seems they are standing up for the criminals while letting the death, pain & suffering of legal American citizens pass virtually unnoticed. Sad mess we're in

Woody McBreairty

retirees, ranchers, and border patrol, they shouldn't have let white supremacists write their immigration legislation in such a way that it guarantees the harrassment of U.S. citizens.

Funny how goodwill dies when you start demonizing innocent people.
