(Here's an ad from last year that was produced to garner support for the Dream Act.)

Bringing back The Dream Act is good news, but I doubt the xenophobes inhabiting the GOP will do the right thing and instead do everything they can to stop this piece of legislation and continue to demonize Latinos and other minorities in America:

Senate Democrats will re-introduce the long-stalled DREAM Act, hoping to tap into momentum from President Barack Obama’s speech along the border Tuesday about America’s need to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and other Democrats will urge passage of the DREAM Act at a news conference Wednesday morning at the Capitol.Foundering in Congress for a decade, the legislation was passed in the House but came up five votes short of overcoming a Republican filibuster in the Senate during last December’s lame-duck session. The DREAM Act would provide a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants brought to the country as children if they attend college or join the military for two years.

At a speech in El Paso, Texas, Obama called on Congress to pass the bill and “stop punishing innocent young people for the actions of their parents.”

“It was a tremendous disappointment to get so close and then see politics get in the way,” Obama said. “These are kids who grew up in this country, love this country, and know no other place as home. The idea that we would punish them is cruel and it makes no sense. We are a better nation than that.

“So we’re going to keep up the fight for the Dream Act. We’re going to keep up the fight for reform.”

I asked President Obama directly about the Dream Act when I had the chance to go to the White House because it's the right thing to do and because I've worked so closely with the Latino community to help make this happen and I will continue to push for this to come true. Whatever happened to America the strong, America the brave, America, the land of the free? The Pat Buchanan types that have littered our history happened. Right Wing talk radio happened and FOX News happened.

The Dream Act:

The DREAM Act, a bipartisan bill that is supported by 66% of the American people, would enable young people who came to the country as children, but lack legal immigration status, to enlist in the U.S. military or attend college on their way to becoming full U.S. citizens. Seventy-five percent of Latino voters say passing the DREAM Act in short order is either extremely important or very important.

The U.S. government/military wants this Dream Act to pass/become law. It provides the supply of workers needed in the military and other positions that will keep wages low. If the supply wasn't there wages would increase. Although I'm not sure how I totally feel about this legislation I'm not for amnesty of undocumented workers/"illegals". Talk to immigrants who jumped through all the hoops to become citizens they're not happy either. Try becoming a citizen in another country it's virtually impossible. This is not a popular stance on this site but I would like to see lower immigration numbers allowed in this country. I understand the possible taxation and meeting the military personnel needs I just doubt it personally.

still not sure why so called progressives continue to back these plans

I came to this country as a child, I had no say in the matter. It was my good fortune to have had a green card until I became a citizen. Those children who do not have any documentation, do not have it because of decisions made by their parents, where they likewise had no choice.

To punish these children for the actions of their parents is hateful, asinine, and downright inhumane. In other words, it is a rethug principle.

should have his/her head examined....the Rethugs should rename their party to "GOWP".....Grand Old White Party.

and are forced to the back of the line because of what your parents did?

and you arent being punished...you just have to pay the same rates for university as any other foreign student would

Forgive me for wandering a bit off the path but I have a question about Harry Reid. Did anyone see the news clip of him on tv last night? He had a terrible bruise on the left side of his face near his eye. Does anyone know what happened to him?

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

I seem to remember that a week or so ago he fell and dislocated his shoulder. Perhaps it is the aftermath of that.

That might explain it. Thank you.

I just googled "harry reid fell" and discovered he not only hurt his shoulder but has a bad bump to the left side of his head. So you were correct. Thanks again

Slipping in the rain - not quite as appealing but then again, he is 71. Dislocating limbs is no fun.

@ constituent

I like the hyphenated "undoc workers/"illegals" Particularly the use of quotation marks. If you're against "amnesty" you must be thrilled with the 400,000 deportations annually for the last three years. I know the deportees don't have the criminal records we were promised. But still- that's close to a million and a half tax paying families torn apart. We're on the right track here no? And the economic advantages are already obvious.

What about "it" do you "doubt personally?"

constituent's picture

let's agree to disagree. i don't like people being in this country illegally period. i believe in rules/law. the economic advantages aren't obvious to all. you like the the hyphenated.......it's not hyphenated by the way.

"Tax Paying (Criminal) Families"
Whose social security nums are they using? And how about, job taking from Americans because they work cheaper and illegally, thereby also lowering wages. I mean, if they are illegal, they don't have social security numbers to pay taxes with. Not to mention the 1000's of people whose socials have been stolen for the use of these illegals who didn't pay taxes, have huge tax debts now.

miss_kitty's picture

Taxes are withheld under fake SSNs. The real holder of the number benefits, because the illegal guy doesn't claim SS benefits. It goes into the account of the person who legally holds that number. They usually don't file income taxes, so all the withholding is kept in the tax coffers. So in addition to sales taxes, gas taxes, and road tolls, illegal immigrants pay payroll tax as well.
What happens after two years, the SS or the IRS contacts the employer and tells them the SS is incorrect, so the employer has to terminate the employee, if they are working within the law.

Show examples of people whose SSNs have been used by undocumented workers who have Huge Tax Debt now. They don't. At worst, they have to prove it wasn't them to the IRS. You can't show proof, because it doesn't happen.

You're making shit up, and pretending it's the truth.

Excellent discussion: the role of Latinos in future elections; what Obama could be doing right now, and, sadly, isn't; the disillusionment within the Latino community with both parties; what to do next.

Read the bill. Under 35 years old, not children only as advertised. Whole families will be legalized. Any child that manages to get here and get enrolled in school under age 12 is eligible, and older kids only have to give a 'list' of schools in the US they went to, but no one is allowed to verify those records due to privacy.
These are only a few of the glaring loopholes I see.
Even the promotors claim over 60,000 illegal students initially and more will come and will continue to use resources of our schools, and many places in colleges will be taken up by illegals getting lower tuitions.
It is a real scam, just go read S.729, which they bank on people being too lazy to do.
(1) meets all the requirements of subparagraphs (A), (B), (C), and (E) of section 4(a)(1);
(2) is at least 12 years of age; and
(3) is enrolled full time in a primary or secondary school.
(c) Employment- An alien whose removal is stayed pursuant to subsection (b) may be engaged in employment in the United States consistent with the Fair Labor Standards Act (29 U.S.C. 201 et seq.) and State and local laws governing minimum age for employment.

The bottom line is big business has been using illegal labor to destroy wages here for years, and they should be the place we stop the cycle. It can be done easily using everify, then the parents wont be here having babies so they can all have a home here. Now they want to reward them for that strategy by giving them all legalization and free education primary, secondary and now college, at the expense of citizens.
