Hoffman won't denounce Limbaugh's "bestiality" comments about Scozzafava in NY-23
By John Amato Tuesday Nov 03, 2009 2:00pmThe Glenn Beck candidate wouldn't denounce Rush Limbaugh using a bestiality quote against Dede Scozzafava. That's not surprising for a phony teabagger like Hoffman.
Frank Rich had a great article about the NY-23 race on Sunday:
And Scozzafava is a mainstream conservative by New York standards; one statistical measure found her voting record slightly to the right of her fellow Republicans in the Assembly. But she has occasionally strayed from orthodoxy on social issues (abortion, same-sex marriage) and endorsed the Obama stimulus package. To the right’s Jacobins, that’s cause to send her to the guillotine.
Sure enough, bloggers trashed her as a radical leftist and ditched her for a third-party candidate they deem a “true” conservative, an accountant and businessman named Doug Hoffman. When Gingrich dared endorse Scozzafava anyway — as did other party potentates like John Boehner and Michael Steele — he too was slimed. Mocking Newt’s presumed 2012 presidential ambitions, Michelle Malkin imagined him appointing Al Sharpton as secretary of education and Al Gore as “global warming czar.” She’s quite the wit.
The wrecking crew of Kristol, Fred Thompson, Dick Armey, Michele Bachmann, The Wall Street Journal editorial page and the government-bashing Club for Growth all joined the Hoffman putsch. Then came the big enchilada: a Hoffman endorsement from Palin on her Facebook page. Such is Palin’s clout that Steve Forbes, Rick Santorum and Tim Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor (and presidential aspirant), promptly fell over one another in their Pavlovian rush to second her motion. They were joined by far-flung Republican congressmen from Kansas, Georgia, Oklahoma and California, not to mention a gaggle of state legislators from Colorado. On Fox News, Beck took up the charge, insinuating that Hoffman’s Republican opponent might be a fan of Karl Marx. Some $3 million has now been dumped into this race by outside groups.
Who exactly is the third-party maverick arousing such ardor? Hoffman doesn’t even live in the district. When he appeared before the editorial board of The Watertown Daily Times 10 days ago, he “showed no grasp” of local issues, as the subsequent editorial put it. Hoffman complained that he should have received the questions in advance — blissfully unaware that they had been asked by the paper in an editorial on the morning of his visit.
Last week it turned out that Hoffman’s prime attribute to the radical right — as a take-no-prisoners fiscal conservative — was bogus. In fact he’s on the finance committee of a hospital that happily helped itself to a $479,000 federal earmark. Then again, without the federal government largess that the tea party crowd so deplores, New York’s 23rd would be a Siberia of joblessness. The biggest local employer is the pork-dependent military base, Fort Drum.
The media is trying to frame today's election as some sort of referendum on President Obama, but NY-23 has voted Republican for decades and decades, so the real battle is between Republicans. If Owens wins, then I'd say conservatives have a real big problem. There will be a circular firing squad among Club for Growth, Limbaugh, Palin, Steele and Gingrich. Newt endorsed the moderate Republican after all, which is not the Fox flavor at the moment.
Last week, Gingrich became one of a small handful of conservatives who endorsed Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R) in her bid to fill Army Secretary John McHugh's now-vacant House seat. As a result, conservative bloggers said Gingrich had eliminated himself from contention for the GOP's presidential nomination in 2012.
And the wingnut bloggers attacked Gingrich over it too.
Right-wing bloggers have recently attacked Newt Gingrich for endorsing Republican Dede Scozzafava over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in the special election to fill Army Secretary John McHugh's (R-NY) vacated congressional seat. On her blog, Michelle Malkin said "no thanks" to the possibility of a Gingrich 2012 presidential run, noting that he is the "most prominent GOP endorser of [the] radical leftist NY-23 congressional candidate," while at RedState.com, Erick Erickson reportedly wrote -- before removing the post -- that Gingrich "stands athwart history and pees on the legacy of 1994."
Hoffman doesn't even live or know anything about the district he's running in, but for teabaggers, that doesn't matter. Knowledge is a liability for the teabagger movement.

questioning God.
The way it is portrayed in the media you'd think NY-23 was a referendum on a national level.
I just heard CNN radio say "In three crucial races today" blah blah blah.
Crucial to whom I wonder.
If NY23 elects this crazy person it only reflects badly on them.
The media is trying to make this whole thing a big story so they won't have to get out and actually cover real big stories. I agree with you, if they elect Hoffman, it just shows how ignorant that area is and how stupid the voters are.
" it just shows how ignorant that area is and how stupid the voters are"
Sad but true.
That is looking more and more like a better name for the party formerly known as Republican.
Or, The No to Everything party.
Sadly, almost 1/3 of Americans are are ignorant, beyond ignorant. They know nothing of what actually goes on outside of their immediate little world and barely comprehend what happens where they are (and ultimately DON'T GIVE 2 S@#TS about anyone but themselves). Even worse, the corporate Rethugs have been able to mobilize that 1/3 to vote in larger proportions than the other 2/3rds of us. NY 23 actually swings the other way, proportionally (2/3rds are challenged by brass door knobs to develop an original thought) so Hoffman will likely win big. Lets hope a year from now these "red white and blue American" ignoramouses are only represented in their diminishing proportions (or better yet stay home).
I don't use this word often but when it fits, it fits. Hoffman is a true tool. When he's interviewed he can barely form a sentence. My little dog has more common sense than this man does.
Of course he won't turn on his master. Had someone said that about Palin, all republicans would be grasping the pearls.
... and the pitchforks.
only if they had been finished clucking about pigs and lipstick.
Well, f**king Rhino's is nowhere as sexist as pig related comments.
Gingrich will never be President no matter who he endorses or doesn't endorse.
Don Knotts?
I saw a minute or two of Beck's side-by-side w/him last night, and the guy gaped like an animated carp, and sounded like he was happy not to have to be chewing gum at the time.
where do they find these people?
County fairs.
....in the dung pile behind the cow exposition!! Ah, the smell!! He's a friggggin loser who'll cowtow to sh1t4branes Beck and Rupched Lingerballs!
Next time you hear someone say "Obama is no better than Bush"
CNN Poll: Majority Of Southerners Says Obama Has Done Better Job Than Bush
Even a southerner knows better!
finding a blind pig joke!
What do you get when you cross Joe Lieberman with a frog? A fascinating, frog-voiced lump of wrinkles whose blood runs cold with reptilian contempt for those in need. And a frog.
for Glenn Beck's cooking segment.
ROFLMAO!
I didn't make the connection. . . .
up really slowly.
You rascal you.
Maybe, but I know that pigs come in pokes and you should never buy one that way. I do believe that is what the people in NY may be doing today. Wait till they find out lipstick and pearls aren't going to help this dumb bastard.
Everybody knows VIAGRA Limp-Dick certainly enjoys and practices on animals, but they're nothing like his little boys in the Dominican Republic.
Nobody has to travel to the Dominican Republic for straight sex. Everyone knows that.
As The Media Obsesses Over New York Special Election, It Ignores Leftward Lurch In California Special Election
You'd think the GOP had taken over everything except the WH? Well except CA-10.
lol
of insanity!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
He'd just have to apologize the next day anyway.
... wouldn't that make her a conservative?
"radical leftist NY-23 congressional candidate." If that statement doesn't show you how desperate they are, nothing will. The election nonsense up here is a dress rehearsal for them going after bigger fish.
gay muslims, or fascist subsaharian sympathisers. I'd say that they are not that desperate yet, they can go much much much much lower.
Of Palin, only with less flair
And no children he can use as stage props. Plus I doubt he has an almost son in law who will bare all in Playgirl magazine. Hell, he is so out of her league. Sure he may be jealous of her, but he will never reach her depth of soap opera goodness.
of our former Soviet foe. And they are not fashionable.
He does have 3 kids, and a wife (hard to believe, but true). The guy is a CPA, worked for PwC a a while back, and must be a multi-millionaire. He owns something called the Hoffman Enterprise or Hoffman Family Enterprises - which is a whole bunch of businesses in upstate New York - where he was born. Runs the gamut from financial investment, to CPA accounting services, to car repair shops and dealership(s), to a teddy bear store, etc.
I don't think he's stupid like Sarah, just a nerd. But his 'platform' is surely dumb; just wants to "stop the spending, cut the taxes and get rid of government regulations."
He's got a video of Fred Thompson (with a moustache) endorsing him on his website. That'd be a party with these two together..!
referring to?
.
Yeah, that's what we need! Get the Food and Drug jackbooted thugs out of the slaughter houses, and let the survivors live in a wasteland where Ayn Rand statues are on every corner!
Pathetic.
I hear Hoffman carries his tea in a carpet bag.
Ha!
Good one!
being El Puerco means there are no limits on the depth of the slime you're willing to wallow around in just to say something in a slightly different way than you said the same thing last week... last month... last century.
"Hoffman doesn't even live or know anything about the district he's running in, but for teabaggers, that doesn't matter. Knowledge is a liability for the teabagger movement."
A: How can he know about the district if he is dead?
B: How do teabaggers compare knowledge to a sentient presence as qualifications?
Oh leave those nits alone and stop picking at them. Nits have feelings too, you know.
We have seen little sign that Mister Hoffman is alive. He looks and sounds as though someone is pulling his strings and throwing their voice. He could be dead and we just haven't been informed yet.
I take my C&L as seriously as I take the creation story. I only accept corrections if they are ordered by a Roman Emperor, English King, or Conservapaedia or whatever laxative company is currently getting the liberal blockage out of the biblical bowels.
I thought cool aid took care of that.
with a K. All others are just imitations. Sham Wow.
Well no wonder it hasn't worked for me, I've been drinking imitation sugar and god knows how many artificial ingredients. I'm gonna get the good stuff and see if it makes me want to vote for the fine Mr. Hoffman when he runs for President in 2012 as he most surely will or so some might suggest.
Are you following me camera guy?
..myself. Then, he'll have a HUGE dose of reality. You see it's easy to be a backseat driver. It's a lot harder when you have to do the driving. Why do you think Rush, Hannity and Beck have never bothered to serve the country in ANY capacity?
I think the first place that Hoffman should start reigning in big government should be his own district. We will see if he actually has the balls to do it. (To close government offices and layoff 10's of thousands of workers...in his own district).
You see all this guys talk a big game about lowering spending and reducing government but NONE of them will start the clean up in their own back yard. This guy will be no different..gauranteed!
He'll be real popular when he puts that out of business. House cleaning begins in your own house, right?
What with that permanent grin and the invisible hand up his ass.
Buffalo Bob would have done time for sexual molestation of a juvenile puppet if HD had been around in the fifties.
Howdy was on strings, the republicans pull strings. Just wanted to get that straight.
running.
One representative calls a woman a "whore". The country cries out in horror. Rush says a woman screwed a rhino and the country says, Yeah, we know.
and looks like a complete retard.
scuse my french...
it absolutely fits him.
I would say he is an opportunist and some tea bagging group told him if he ran they would go all out for him, even to the point of getting the republican candidate out of the race. Sarah gave him her blessing along with some other not so smart republicans, and now they think they are making a statement with him. But I don't think the statement they are making means what they think it means.
The new 11th commandment. Thou shalt say nothing bad about party leader Limbaugh.
... because people who look like child molesting ventriloquist puppets should really go around running their mouth using a drug abusing lard assed proxy.
Well said!
the Daily Show last nite and... holy tap-dancing creepy robot Batman!
Seriously, the GOP is self imploding. Please, please, please Dems... don't f*ck this up.
I know I can't be the only one who has an image of a caveman swinging a large, heavy wooden implement whenever I read the words 'Club For Growth'. I bet they used the same PR firm whiz kids who came up with the teabagger label. LOL
You don't need great technique when you target selfish people with a message of greed.
The guy doesn't seem like the brightest flame in the fire.
Most, not all, Republican's think women are just a bother. Women's roles are outlined in the bible and that's it. The only work they should do is work that makes their life easier, getting a beer, gettting the family picture scheduled for the flyers. Women are good for sex, and it better be the kind of sex they want to have--or fantasys about sex--can you say Sarah. Here we don't worry about the procreation stuff in their book. Women are great cover for their own "bestiality". They certainly don't want women in business, law, medicine,--no women judges--no positions of authority. Authority was given to them in the book. They have been given dominion over everything, women and animals, and most of these policicians think that that means the government too.
would sleep with Rush is guilty of the same!
can stammer and bullshit a little bit when she doesn't know something (which of course, is often), but this fella seems to go straight to the deer-in-headlights expression on his face.
After seeing Dubya start damn near every speech or address of his on anything of import with that same puzzled look on his face, I know I never want to see another politican with that same look ever elected again!
Snips from Noam Schreiber and Jon Chait:
"Republican conservatives have a genuinely coherent worldview they want to see reflected in its entirety. Losing on any issue is enough to rouse their anger, and they take that anger out on any member that does not accept the totality of their worldview. Republican Bruce Bartlett (on John DiIulio’s comment that “the White House has totally subsumed its policy-making to its political decisions): "This vacuum in terms of policy analysis has tended to be filled by those in the White House who look at issues solely in terms of their political implications."
And that's why they should never have the levers of power.
Perhaps it's best to stop the talk now about how backward, stupid or unthinking the conservative voters are, and instead come to the realization that young progressives and liberals are as ignorant as ignorant gets.
Give the conservatives credit for having enough smarts to show up at the polls each and every time, no matter how small or insignificant the election might seem. Conservatives are smart enough to know that all elections matter.
Some younger folks I work with, who were rabid Democrats and Obama supporters just 12 months ago, today couldn't be bothered with something so unimportant and boring as voting. There were other more important things to do today. Eff them all.
"but NY-23 has voted Republican for decades and decades"
This quote is a tad diminished.
According to this link from the Frank Rich article it claims:
"It is one of only two remaining districts in the United States where at least part of the district has not been represented by a Democrat since 1852"
Why ever would the wingnuts and the MSM choose this particular race as a referendum on their lunacy?
Why ever would the wingnuts and the MSM choose this particular race as a referendum on their lunacy?
The answer is simple: because they can get away with it. There are hundreds of other races around the country where Democrats are winning in landslides, but that does not make for good ratings.
I'm just guessing.
It was a referendum on their lunacy. However, not in the way in which they had hoped.
I am not sure why everyone keeps comparing Hoffman to a pedophile when a Jeffrey Dahmer clone with poor dental hygiene is a far more accurate description.
...almost exclusively of grotesque, dishonest thugs. It's really up to the American people. The Republicans aren't even pretending to not be insane, so if voters elect them, then we have to conclude that Republican insanity is what American voters want.
The situation is made more difficult because most Democrats, while not in the same league as their Republican counterparts, are hardly worthy of support. We're so deep in "Lesser Evil Hell" that there appears to be no way out. I am more fortunate than a lot of lefties, because my two senators, while not exactly progressive firebrands, are as good as or better than most other Democrats. Patty Murray has a generally fine voting record, but she isn't going to lead a Democratic Party revolution either. Maria Cantwell has the sad ability to be wrong on some major issues and she requires pressure and a watchful eye at all times. Her instincts are unreliable, but she's a hell of a lot better than Ben Nelson, Kent Conrad, Blanche Lincoln, or Mary Landrieu. Of course, Cantwell lives in a state where it's safe to be a Democrat, so she has no excuse.
Personally, I don't think there is better than a 1 in 100 chance that we'll even make a credible effort to fix the mess we've made in this country. Obama is a nice enough guy, but he really doesn't seem to understand just what an unsustainable disaster this country has created. Fortunately for him -- since he doesn't seem to be comfortable confronting our problems in a brutally frank manner -- the American people, for the most part, don't want to listen to the truth, so he's off the hook. Soaring rhetoric and half-measures are all we can expect.
Although I haven't read much written by James Kunstler, I did come across some comments of his the other day that seemed sadly accurate. He said that when people read what he's written (e.g., The Long Emergency) they tell him that he's too pessimistic and he doesn't offer any solutions. His response is that what people really want is to be told how we (the US) can continue to do exactly what we've always done only this time have things work out better. No change. No sacrifice. Better outcome. Sweet. But absurd.
That's something I've noticed about most social, political, and economic writing -- if the author isn't upbeat and confident that a few small modifications will fix everything, he (or she) is deemed a doom-sayer and largely ignored. It makes me think of Thelma and Louise. Imagine them driving at sixty miles an hour toward a cliff edge hundreds of feet above the Colorado River. When their front wheels are six inches from the precipice, Americans want to hear what minor corrections the ladies need to make to have everything turn out splendidly.
This kind of thinking is relevant to the health care discussion (and just about everything else currently facing this country). We don't need a public option. We need to completely overhaul the entire system, beginning with fundamental changes in our assumptions and expectations. But that kind of action requires mature adults and mature adults are in very short supply in the US today. Barack Obama dodged the whole issue, by taking single payer off the table and refusing to demand a no-holds-barred discussion of health and health care in America in 2009. Instead, he opted for committing us even more deeply to an unsustainable system (private, for profit insurance companies and employer provided health insurance), and has steadfastly avoided any really honest discussion of the issues involved. In one sense, it's hard to blame him, because he knows that his audience wants him to tell them how Thelma and Louise can avert certain death without doing much more than tapping on the brakes and wishing really hard for a soft landing.
I came of age in the sixties and over the years my optimism and pessimism have swung back and forth, but I can say without hesitation that I've never been more pessimistic about the future of this country than I am today. You see, the problem is there simply is no path from where we are now to where we need to be that doesn't require a nation of intelligent, informed, honest, ideologically flexible adults -- both leaders and citizens -- who are willing to accept the necessity of pain and sacrifice. Instead, what we have is country filled with people whose most appropriate Halloween costume would be a big, old ostrich with plenty of ground in which to bury that little pin head.
Bummer.
doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Most people want just the result to be different. They are pin heads.
Nice summation.
damn you :-|
explains a bunch about where the Repub's are at right now and how they got there. Great book-I recommend it! The Repub's have just kept getting further and further to the right and wackier as they go along. It just keeps getting worse and worse. It is truly the party of the unhinged right now.
Unfortunately, it seems like where the Republicans are right now is winning (or likely to win) all three of the most noteworthy races in this election.
I keep trying to figure out how to spin Democratic losses in Virginia, NJ (or a win by a hair?), and NY's 666th congressional district (oh, wait, it's the 23rd) as being good news for Democrats (or sanity).
The American people are too stupid and fickle to be counted on. One thing is for sure, you don't usually usher in the age of Democratic ascendancy with a bunch of wins by Republicans. When are the American people people gonna pull their heads outta their....
Oh, never mind. Stupid question.
Have you read Michele Goldbeg's Kingdom Coming, Damon Linker's The Theocons, Idiot America, by Charles Pierce and The Family by Jeff Sharlet. All of them scared the hell out of me, and my fear is that this political enviroment is the perfect storm.

I"m sick of the "so and so won't denounce his supporter's (or in this case creator's) offensive comment"?
It's fun to watch the Republican eat their young. This always happens with political groups motivated by hatred - they turn on themselves in vicious schisms. It won't be long until the Taliban and Al-Quaeda are shooting at each other - just like the Republican right versus the Republican wingnuts.
Rightwing nutjob loses in rightwing district because of ultra rightwing morons getting involved.
You can't make this stuff up!
This right wing nut job didn't make it. Everytime someone votes one of these idiots into office the whole country pays! They have ruined the economy, and killed how many people? They have proven what I have been saying for quite some time now.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
It is killing America and it's people.
