The Husband of John Ensign's Mistress Speaks Out

And you thought Mark Sanford was the only one "in love." I'm waiting for John Ensign to give an interview with the AP, just like Sanford.
The husband of John Ensign's mistress spoke publicly for the first time today, claiming that the Nevada Senator continued to pursue his wife, Cynthia Hampton, even after powerful political colleagues tried to stop him.
Doug Hampton said that Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn and others urged Ensign "to end the affair and help the Hamptons pay off their home and move to Colorado. But Ensign was so infatuated that he continued, Hampton said, reports the Las Vegas Sun.
He also claimed that Ensign paid Hampton's wife more than $25,000 in severance, which could be a possible felony violation of campaign finance law.
Hampton added that Coburn confronted Ensign and urged him to provide millions of dollars in assistance to the Hamptons to pay off their mortgage, in addition to getting Ensign to write a remorseful letter to Cynthia Hampton.
In the letter, Ensign expresses his shame: "I was completely self-centered and only thinking of myself. I used you for my own pleasure not letting thoughts of you, Dough, Brandon or Brittany come into my mind."
But that attitude changed quickly, says Hampton, who claims that Ensign later repudiated the letter and told him "I'm in love with your wife."
Now Ensign's attorney admits that the senator paid out $96,000 in hush money to the Hamptons. Ow.

The problem is not the sex, it is the corruption that is illegal. Bribery, payoffs, stalking....may be little things to us but to a government official it is a crime. Sanford's problems are the same. Spitzer and Mcgreevy same. It doesn't matter that they cheated or had sex, it is kind of like insider trading. There are certain laws they have to abide by and not doing them, like ditching a very expensive security team which is not hired by Sanford by the way, but the people of the state he represents. They have a right to protect and preserve their leader. Silly, I know but when they are cheated out of their services that hard earned taxes go to pay for, well, you get pissed, or should. Censor? NO, get the freak out.

i really won't care about ones personal affairs but the GOP believe they own" family values". to me enSIGN has been somewhat lucky with other media stories taking the heat off enSIGN. i would like to see more of this in the media. nevada is an important as far as elections.

To sum up, Hampton says that Coburn persuaded Ensign to write a letter. Coburn says, "I was never present when the letter was written." Hampton says, Coburn and others tried to get Ensign to pay off Hampton's house. Coburn says, "I never made any assessment (?) about paying anybody anything."
Hampton might be sleazily trying to parlay sex with his wife into a big payoff, but Coburn knew about all of this shit.
The only thing that matters regarding getting Ensign out (I mean embarrassment doesn't work on these soul-less bastards, ask David Vitter): an unreported 25,000$ "severance" payment to Ms. Hampton from Ensign's campaign. "Unreported" means a federal felony worth 5 years.
By the way, Coburn is trying to claim some kind of privileged communication with Hampton, as a clergy member and a doctor:

So, Coburn is (was) an obstetrician, so the privilege would only apply to a patient. And according to Melanie Sloan (former federal prosecutor, works for CREW) Coburn is a deacon, which doesn't count as "clergy".
Maybe Coburn should cut the line on Ensign and find himself a lawyer before he gets an obstruction charge.
I couldn't care less about Sen. Ensign or Gov. Sanford's private lives. But you can't retain office when you are embezzling money to visit mistresses or pay them off. And if I skipped work for a day without telling anyone where I was, I would probably be fired.
Chimpy and Dearth may be out of office but the crime wave they spawned lives on. "R" is a scarlet letter to anyone with an IQ, but to the tribe members, it means immunity from prosecution. Crime pays if you're an "R." Who cares what anyone thinks?
The congressmen and executive staff we've seen fooling around with gay hookers and bathroom sex are getting a pass. Imagine the letters the spurned spouse could dig up around _those_ encounters.
Does Hampton's actions seem unseemly to anyone else? He's simply pimped her out to a powerful man and he's upset because he didn't get enough money.
