Wow, we know how much the extreme right hates this man and now Dr. Tiller has been killed:

WICHITA, Kansas - Media reports say that abortion provider Dr. George Tiller has been shot and killed at his Wichita church. Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades. He was acquitted in March of misdemeanor charges stemming from procedures he performed, but moments after the verdict the state’s medical board announced it was investigating allegations against him that are nearly identical to those the jury had rejected.

---

Tiller has been a favored target of anti-abortion protesters, and he testified that he and his family have suffered years of harassment and threats. His clinic was the site of the 1991 “Summer of Mercy” protests marked by mass demonstrations and arrests. His clinic was bombed in 1985, and an abortion opponent shot him in both arms in 1993.

There's not enough information in about this yet, but BillO. certainly has made him a huge target.

Here's More:

Wichita television station KAKE-TV reported that police were looking for a blue Ford Taurus with a K-State vanity plate, license number 225 BAB. Police described him as a white male in his 50s or 60s, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 220 pounds, wearing a white shirt and dark pants.

UPDATE: Scarce just posted about this on Video Cafe too.

I think Holder should maybe start an investigation of all the right-wing hate radio hosts who did baiting shows on Tiller leading up to this.

He can't take his own life, killing is wrong.

savannah43's picture

This person kills someone for killing what he perceives as a "someone?" I guess it is all in the timing. And, according to Christian belief, until baptism, an unborn person is not innocent. They are guilty of original sin. Their souls are black. They cannot get into Heaven because of this. So the expression "the innocent life of the unborn" is total nonsense. But no one should be surprised that these so-called Christians twist everything to their advantage, regardless of the truth, or what they claim to be the truth.

Not true, but it does add a dramatic twist to the rhetoric.

I had a tumor removed a while back.
Do you mean to ell me I need to get it baptized!
Is there a special hell for tumors?

CnLfan's picture

That was in response to my comment? Please explain.

ysbaddaden's picture
)O(

Actually that was true. That's why so many churches baptize infants.

The Catholics started the concept of limbo, although I'm not sure it was ever official, because people were uncomfortable about the idea that babies were screaming in hell-fire because they were never baptised.

The Romanians had a class of vampire called the pricoloci that were so because they were unbaptized. Some Germans restores the Goddess Berchta, to essentially nursemaid the dead unbaptized children. A grim existence at best but not hellfire.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

CnLfan's picture

I meant that although that is/was a possible, even generally accepted, theory in some corners, it's hardly "Christian belief."

ysbaddaden's picture
)O(

So you're now THE authority on "Christian belief?"

And you didn't say which part, that unbaptized infants go to hell or limbo?

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

Liz212's picture

According to Dante, the "virtuous unbaptized" ended up in Limbo, and that included pagans and unbaptized babies. The Vatican does not officially condone the concept of Limbo. Though baptism serves multiple purposes in the Catholic church, one being to wash away original sin, you would be hard-pressed to find any current Catholic clergyman who says unbaptized babies go to hell.

CnLfan's picture

...you would be hard-pressed to find any current Catholic clergyman who says unbaptized babies go to hell.

That was the point I was trying to make. To say that the idea that "unbaptized babies are guilty of original sin, have black souls, and can never enter heaven" is a "Christian" belief therefore... is like saying the idea of "a woman's right to choose" is an "atheistic" belief therefore... I was challenging the broadly generalized premise and the conclusion which followed.

CnLfan's picture

Quite the opposite. How is explaining that since not all Christians believe what was asserted then it cannot be called a general "Christian" belief that absolutely must hold if someone opposes abortion on Christian grounds somehow an attempt on my part to be THE authority???

By the way, the part that unbaptized infants are guilty of anything.

savannah43's picture

Could you at least use complete sentences? It is hard to discuss anything with you if you don't use them. I get, "Quite the opposite." Although I don't know what to apply it to, but what the hell are you trying to say otherwise? Break it down into shorter sentences with one thought in each. I'll send you a bill for the tutoring.

CnLfan's picture

savannah43 claimed that "according to Christian belief, until baptism, an unborn person is not innocent. They are guilty of original sin. Their souls are black. They cannot get into Heaven because of this. So..."

I objected* to that broad generalization. The fact that some Christians may believe that, does not make it a "Christian belief."

* (Admittedly in a snarky way which challenged the idea that so-called Christians were the ones twisting things to score points.)

Then ysbaddaden correctly explained that some Christians DO, in fact, believe such a thing.

I then attempted to explain more clearly that I was challenging the generalization of "Christian belief." Some does not mean all, or even most.

ysbaddaden then accused me of claiming authority over Christian belief.

I then explained that I am the one who's trying to challenge someone else's attempt to express some general Christian doctrine.

I don't believe I have insulted anyone along the way.

savannah43's picture

Druid?

If it isn't Christian, then what is it? You don't think you get any credibility here just saying anything that suits you, do you? I never even mentioned "hell."

CnLfan's picture

I never mentioned hell either. (Did I?)

savannah43's picture

I am waiting for you to tell me?

CnLfan's picture

The part I believed to be untrue was the part I originally bolded:

And, according to Christian belief, until baptism, an unborn person is not innocent. They are guilty of original sin. Their souls are black. They cannot get into Heaven because of this. So the expression "the innocent life of the unborn" is total nonsense.

1. I do not believe that even a majority of Christians agree with the premise that an unborn person is, or can be, anything but innocent.

2. I do not believe that even a majority of Christians agree with the premise that anyone, let alone an unborn person, is, or can be, guilty of the sins* of another.

* Original or otherwise

3. I do not believe that even a majority of Christians agree with the premise that an unborn person's soul is "black."

Therefore, it seems patently untrue that these ideas are broad "Christian beliefs" from which one can draw conclusions.

That's just my opinion, of course, but even if the entire syllogism above were undeniably true and valid, any conclusion drawn from it could only be about Christian belief, which is independent of what actually IS. That is, no one's beliefs can render the expression "the innocent life of the unborn" total nonsense. Either it is total nonsense or it isn't. Therefore, your conclusion simply does not follow, logically.

That said, I hold no claim to the truth. I was simply trying to correct what I saw as inaccurate representations of presumed beliefs of "others."

I have to say, until you challenged me to locate an actual flaw in your logic, I thought you were making a sarcastic if-then. You gave your opinion and I gave mine, and I thought it was just the normal give and take of casual conversation. I never thought of it as debate, and I apologize for my part in making this so adversarial.

According to the Wichita Eagle’s Stan Finger and Joe Rodriguez, in their article “Wichita abortion provider George Tiller shot to death at Wichita church:”

Two men attempted to apprehend the suspect, but he pointed a gun at them and threatened them before fleeing, Stolz said....

"Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993. Tiller was wounded in both arms, and Shannon remains in prison for the shooting…. The clinic was bombed in June 1986, and was severely vandalized earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, his lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident…. No arrests were made in the 1986 bombing…. Sgt. Bart Brunscheen of the Wichita Police Department said earlier today that there has been no activity today at Tiller's clinic, although security crews were being brought in to make sure the building was secure. Officials also were going to check the clinic's security cameras to see if there was any activity over night….Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and lawsuits. A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an independent second physician's concurring opinion before performing later term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in this criminal case, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008...."

Not to tell these Kansas cops something they shouldn't already know, but law enforcement has evolved to the point that we can actually check who owns that Taurus. We can also check if the owner, or spouse, is a white male about 6'1" and 220 lbs.

I know; it's "just a theory."

Annoyed Canuck's picture

As I read about this, I thought about a local doctor, a gynecologist who performs abortions, who was shot by an anti-abortionist in 1994 and stabbed by another in 2000.

I Googled him and found a speech he recently gave, published in the National Post:

Why I am an Abortion Doctor
http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/story.htm...

". . . After I graduated from University of British Columbia medical school in 1962, I went to Chicago, where I served my internship and Ob/Gyn residency at Cook County Hospital. At that time, Cook County had about 3,000 beds, and served a mainly indigent population. If you were really sick, or really poor, or both, Cook County was where you went.

The first month of my internship was spent on Ward 41, the septic obstetrics ward. Yes, it's hard to believe now, but in those days, they had one ward dedicated exclusively to septic complications of pregnancy.

About 90% of the patients were there with complications of septic abortion. The ward had about 40 beds, in addition to extra beds which lined the halls. Each day we admitted between 10-30 septic abortion patients. We had about one death a month, usually from septic shock associated with hemorrhage.

I will never forget the 17-year-old girl lying on a stretcher with 6 feet of small bowel protruding from her vagina. She survived.

I will never forget the jaundiced woman in liver and kidney failure, in septic shock, with very severe anemia, whose life we were unable to save."

Kate's picture

... women don't get late-term abortions unless there is something horribly wrong with the fetus, such as it has only a minimal brain. It's too traumatic for the woman's body for it to ever be a casual decision. Yet the right-wing makes it seem as if these women are just acting on a whim or some selfish reason.

Annoyed Canuck's picture

An ex-girlfriend of mine was a nurse in a neo-natal intensive care unit. She occasionally had to deal with anencephalic babies - born with severely malformed brains, some with no cortex, some without complete skulls. Many of these were aborted, most of the rest were stillborn. A few lived for a few hours or days. It was traumatic for the families.

Exactly. I hate people who try to make late term abortions sound like something people do when they just *forgot* to get one earlier in the pregnancy. Apparently there are only 2 or 3 places in the US that will even do a late term abortion, and in order to get one you must have a doc's opinion, plus a second opinion, that either your life is in danger or the baby's condition is not compatible with life. You also have to get a mental evaluation. These aren't perfectly healthy babies being murdered...it's more like humane euthanization, if you have to compare it to anything.

This doctor was taking care of women who had no other options, yet he was killed for being a doctor!

This makes no sense at all.

Michelle's picture

CNN has a story up on the web, and like many articles I have read today, they mention Operation Rescue, but I have to give CNN props for including the last paragraph which most others omit:

The anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, which has led numerous demonstrations at Tiller's clinic, condemned the shooting as a "cowardly act."

"Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice," the group said in a statement. It offered its prayers for Tiller's family, "that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

In March, Tiller was acquitted of 19 counts of performing procedures unlawfully at his clinic. In 2008, a probe initiated by abortion opponents who petitioned state authorities to convene a grand jury ended without charges.

On its Web site, Operation Rescue refers to Tiller as a "monster" who has "been able to get away with murder." And Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry, who is no longer affiliated with the group, called Tiller "a mass murderer."

Tiller was singled out because he was the only one practicing late-term abortions in Kansas. There are others in other states, but it was precisely because he was practicing in Jeebustan that he was killed. For example, there is one clinic that provides abortion services in Mississippi. One.

I can see it now. Rather than actually adress the fact that the right-wing has a segment within itself that actively practices terrorism, they'd rather this just turn into a pissing contest over late-term abortions. F*&#! I hate these mofos. Life is so sacred they have to kill the living, who kill the unborn. I was at a pro-choice rally in my town just last week and I was saying to those there that pro-choice also includes pro-life. That's what these mofos don't seem to understand, pro-choice takes up both sides; but it is the women's choice. Of course that is really what is at the core the pukes who are
"pro-life" is that heaven forbid the woman should have a choice. They would love to return to the pregnant, bearfoot and in the kitchen time and are no better than the taliban and frankly should be treated as such.

Old Billy's picture

I'm pretty sure that deep down, just about every rabid "pro-lifer" out there has had some painful, and thoroughly "unfair" (in their mind) treatment from a woman. I know that the two wacko pro-lifers in my family are also coincidentally the two males who have been divorced. There is a huge element of a sensed loss of power, and the desire to reassert that power through control. Poor, sick bastards, but you can't tell them that.

Trittydi's picture

All the encouragement these people need is to be rabidly religious and pro-life. A combination that you almost always find together. I don't think it takes a woman's involvement to create that particular state of mind. For one -- they preach it from the fundy pulpits.

For those paid by MSM to foment for and promulgate violence daily -- what happened today is more about legitimizing the killing of those they disagree with -- than it is about who died today and why.

The Republicani and their followers are depraved. you could be right - they may secretly support this domestic terrorist. I doubt any of them will be stupid enough to admit it though...

maybe now someone will really
put a thick brown paper bag over
billo's head permanently......
billo's hatred and hypocritical
bile over the airwaves must stop.
this death is on the head of billo.

how many more will there be?

They call themselves "pro-life," yet support the death penalty and wars, and probably support these new "shoot first and ask questions later" laws that are coming into effect in different states. And some think it's perfectly justified to murder a doctor who provided abortion services. On a Sunday. At church. How poetic.

The really sad thing is, the person who did this will become a folk hero to many on the right, the same people who will be completely blinded to their supreme hypocrisy. It sickens and repulses me.

Xanadufus's picture

of left and right contain far too many killers. Che'. Just sayin'. I am not a fan of shooting people, even for 'noble causes'.

Any legal types know if this could be prosecuted as a hate crime?

There are Republicani terrorists all around us. Republicani are extreme right wingers.

Now if the perpetrator had bad motives like race, sexual preference, or protesting for animal rights, we could really get him. Kansas has the death penalty; we could kill him twice!

Think of how superior we would feel.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

savannah43's picture

It could if a DA with some guts could be found to prosecute it. They would probably get shot, too. So much for abortion being legal. I guess that if you are a right-winger, you are not bound by the laws of this country. Just make your own. Is that the main difference between Republicans and Democrats? The former just do as they please, and the latter try to change things according to the law? The moral and ethical way?

Xanadufus's picture

Sometimes I think the only way to stop these hate inciting wingnuts - who really make up a small minority of our oeverall population, is through another civil war.

That makes as much sense as, um, shooting abortion providers. Don't morph into the enemy, despite your outrage.

are looking for a shooting war, IMO.

It crossed my mind that David Neiwert should have a slot on MSNBC. The reporting and analysis he does deserves a broader audience.

Fucking religion!

Xanadufus's picture

is one that I'd like to be a member of! Seriously, this sort of extremism will be overcome, imho, by making good chrischun people repudiate it. Not by assaulting them, and making this sort of senseless violence into an atheist vs jesus thing.

Not exactly, but the point is well taken.

The time has come to acknowledge the truth: Religion--especially Christian religion--is organized insanity and nothing positive. It is harmful to society, it is dangerous and it must be ended.

The problem for many is that when they engage faith - they disengage their critical thinking apparatus.

There is love and forgiveness if that's your cup of tea, and there is hated and violence if that's what turns you on.

Do I not hate those that hate you, O Lord?
And do I not loathe those who rise us against you?
I hate them with perfect hatred...

The righteous will rejoice when they see vengeance done;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicket.

That said to live your life in faith you must first close the eye of reason.
Reason is very lacking in the christian/republican version of religion.

This is a control issue. My way or I'll beat you into submission. Or kill you if the beatings don't work. I have worked with many battered men and women, and this is the constant routine. They all act the same way. Only the people involved are different.

Killing a child within the womb is the ultimate way to exert power and control over a human being so is shooting someone that you disagree with.

Do you think late term abortion is used for birth control?
They would not do a late term abortion with the only motive being birth control.
If you are like the vast majority of people you don't even no someone that has had an abortion.
If a featus has a malformed brain or has a hand growing inside it head should you give birth to it and let it suffer and die after it is born?
Would you not do as much for a human as you would for a dying animal?
Where is your compassion?
republicanism is a mental illness!

It always gets me when people say they are doing God's work or God needs you to send money. Assuming that God is almighty, why wouldn't he do his own work, and why ever would he need money ? Huh?

People do a lot of bad things in the name of both God and goodness when they are very misguided and destructive.

JudyLou's picture

but only in an advisory capacity.

I don't mean to attack John Amato, but why use the word "killed"? Why not murdered or assassinated? When Matthew Shepard was murdered, many in the rightwing media used the words "killed" or "died" to minimize the actions of the perpetrators, to even insinuate that it was Shepard's own fault.

The motivations of Tiller's murderer were quite plain, and we should not use words that could be misused by others to reduce or even justify the murderer's actions. Even if the murderer were not involved in the anti-woman/anti-choice movement (e.g. he was killing for personal revenge) the police would still term it a murder.

Old Billy's picture

The police would call it a homicide. The DA would decide if it was called murder yet. Don't you watch Law and Order?

Once again, the followers of the magical being have brought justice to the non-believers and those who would question the word of the almighty. It's long over due for the rest of the world to put it's foot down and treat religion for what it is, mental illness. They talk and pray to thin air, they kill, torture maim, rape, all in the name of a magical being that no one can see or hear. Worse, they claim to know the intentions and goals of this make believe creator. They have hindered education, womens rights, medical advancement, science. Why would any thinking human follow a group such as this. It's as simple as the people who follow, These people have nothing else, they are jerks, nurds, sexual perverts and the garbage of our world. Were it not for the "pass" given them due to "religion", they would all be put in prison or a mental hosptial. Their is a big fact that everyone seems to overlook(and forgive), religion and the sub-humans who follow it have KILLED more fucking people than smallpox.
Make me magical being for a day, hell one hour and the problem will be solved. In the name of daddy-o, Jr and spooky.CEO,citizens, eyes, open

But do they take care of them because God told them to or because it's the right thing to do?
