Olympia Snowe says that the right wing extremists are destroying the GOP
Olympia Snowe wrote an op-ed in the NY Times today that's called: We Didn’t Have to Lose Arlen Specter.
How well have we done as a party with these groups? Unfortunately, the answer is obvious from the results of the last two elections. We should be reaching out to these segments of our population — not de facto ceding them to the opposing party. There is no plausible scenario under which Republicans can grow into a majority while shrinking our ideological confines and continuing to retract into a regional party. Ideological purity is not the ticket back to the promised land of governing majorities — indeed, it was when we began to emphasize social issues to the detriment of some of our basic tenets as a party that we encountered an electoral backlash.
The Senator joined Andrea Mitchell this morning and explained in greater detail how the far right "Club For Growth" type elements have destroyed the republican party.

Destroying? They ate the Republican party up from the inside out.

Ms Snowe is angling for a nasty rebuke from Uncle Tom Steele.
I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.....
All they want is to make sure that they haven't offended Rush Limbaugh.
it's Uncle Tom Steele. Show the man some respect and use the title he's worked so hard for.

Does she follow Specter to the D-side or does she apologize to Boss Rush?
My money says Sen. Snow will not apologize to Rush. There is a difference between Sen. Snow and all those that have apologized to Rush in the past. She is a woman and therefore more likely to stand on principles as opposed to what is good for her political future.
I am a man by the way
I don't think she'll apologize, either. Sen. Snowe doesn't need Rush to win elections in New England, though she will need patient staffers to answer the wacko calls from the Rush nutcases. I do believe she is next out the GOP door, however, as she is pro-choice and moderate. You can't be either any longer in the GOP, and she is both. And intelligent. And a woman.
Oh man, shes gonna get taken out to the woodshed by the exact people she is addressing. Here she is being reasonable, and they dont (or wont) get it. Theyre too busy pointing the finger at every other damn thing they can in hope of hanging on to what little influence remains, and as far as theyre concerned she just volunteered to be the next scapegoat.
Its like watching a seaman (couldnt resist) clutching the mast of a sinking ship, watching all the others board life rafts as he bellows to them how stupid they are that they cant see the ship is still afloat, or has to stand for something, or whatever other blathering nonsense he can shout in a feeble attempt to compel them to return and join him in utter failure.
one thing is for sure:
as per usual, they will go out of their way to miss her point. Friggin' dopey bedwetters....
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
Republicans willfully miss points. The party of NO government.

Legally blond, after LIEberman, who would believe either one of them? I would most certainly vote for a proven progressive before I would Specter or Snow. Meh! Like you say: a quibble.
edit:
Hmf! I find links for both. Since I don't know either way, I concede the point.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
It's Sieg Heil! It's not Zeig.
I work with a guy and we were talking about Tiger Woods. I mentioned what a catch he would be for some young women, maybe one of his daughters! He replied, "Not if you are worried about racial purity", with a straight face. And he is a 'christian'
...that someone who calls themselves "christian" is necessarily not a racist. Many of the most hard core racists in this country consider themselves christian.
chuckle, enjoy! There's so little of that at neoNAZIcon expense. If you really want to loose your lunch, didn't I see somewhere that the History Channel is playing THE FALL of Hitler soon?
I'd rather watch Springtime for Hitler.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
.... just to see if Senator Snow's brave comments cause his head to explode!
...from his show where he was blubbering on about Specter the Defector. The silly gasbag sounded like he was going to cry. Good, good times.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
Republican 'contraction' sounds good to me.......they'll simply continue to be a 25% minority that's always chirping about these three issues, but never able to do anything about it:
1.) abortion rights,
2.) gay marriage,
3.) illegal immigration,
Meanwhile, the rest of us will continue on about the business of addressing the real issues impacting America, while winning election after election!
She misses the point. What killed the GOP was hypocrisy at the highest levels. Restrain spending by running up deficits. Keep the country safe by pissing the world off. Preserve freedom by torturing people and ignoring the rule of law. War is peace. Slavery is Freedom. Etc.
You forgot the most important slogan of the current Republican party: Ignorance is strength.
I see Ms Snow either following Specter into the party of rational thought, or being hung in effigy by her own party, and attacked by LimpBaugh, Hannity, and the rest, thus proving her point.
Dumbasses actually thought that all they needed to win major elections was the vote from their fellow white Christian(?) gun loving bigots, ignoring all minorities, gays, many progressive groups. Arrogant, guaranteed to lose forever strategy.
when the "government is the problem", "tax breaks will solve our problems" and "family values" issues resonated with enuf people in the center.
The right wing provided enuf votes to win minor majorities again and again.
Those economic and small government arguments no longer have any merits, and the country is liberal on moral issues like gay marriage and choice.
So...game over.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
I don't know if Ms Snowe is ready to follow the light, but she's fed up enough to say things like this so she's ready to do something. As for Rush, I'm sure if she were not in public she would probably say F him.

Consider the Sinking of the Maine. It was so long ago, that nobody cares how it was blown up or by whom, but it was enough to push us to war at the time. It only matters to the generations who lived through it.
I am reading about the Sinking of the Maine, very interesting
You forgot about 50 others Rice, Wolfie, both IMF,'journalism', dummyrummy, LIEberman, Kissenger, Cheney, Addington, Gonzo, Delay, etc.
So its the "Right-Wing Extremists" and not, uh, the last 8 years of an attempted one-party rule power consolidation by corporatists, militarists, torturers, unregulated financial criminals, all wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible to prove they're right?
OK, got it.
the writing is on the wall. the right/(r) have lost their way. they currently have an identity crisis that we have been talking about for some time now. what disturbs me is that they will look to obama to establish an identity. in doing so they deceive/lie. there own party BUSH/paulson 'socialized' the losses of
wallStreet via the TARP. the (r) alienated the moderate working class of their party with TAX breaks for the wealthy. they lied to evangelicals in 2000 election. more importantly their leadership dragged this country into a unjustified war(s). the (r) has been into nation building and large/expansive government. they have done a lot of damage to this country for the so-called "free market" globilization WallStreet scheme.
they will likely try to bring back the label/adjective "conservative" to be all inclusive. the problem is
the party is NOT conservative as a whole but the word conservative is equivalent to good.
I want a two party system. It's healthy for America. I'd like to see the Republicans return to their traditional platforms. If they did, it'd be better for the country as a whole and would do a lot to get rid of the poisonous and polarizing effect the right wing nuts (both in Congress and on Fox Noise)have had on our country.
Why it has taken the Republicans eight long years to wake up and smell the coffee is mystifying.
...they're called Democrats.
nice one. You could argue that the DP is made of many parties. "Herding cats" comes to mind. Of course, that is one of the things I like about progressives and to whatever extent being progressive (or liberal) applies to the DP.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
...I'd sure like to see fewer Reids and Pelosis and a lot more Feingolds...
+1 and pours a drink to that!
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
I second that.
Wisc. did well to elect this one.
America did well to elect...THAT ONE!

Progressive punch gives Senator Snowe a lifetime progressive score of 37.07. Senator Specter's is 36.94.
They're not exactly poles apart.
By contrast, Senator Schumer has a 92.82 and Senator De Mint has a 2.58.
They went to bed with the dogs and now they wonder why they have fleas. They counted on and bowed down to the right wing religious extremist for a whole lot of years, now they realize they are weighted down by them and that's all they have left. They can't shed them because they are their last vestige of hope. These thoughts must keep them up at night.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
As a foreinger, all I see, and many like me, is a Republican jumping from a sinking ship, and it is VERY bad for their image. I'm sure many Americans just read the headlines and get this same message. GOP going down fast.
"If the US government enforced its banking laws like it did its park regulations, we wouldn't be
in this damn park in the first place." OCCUPY.!!
at the end of the day, that's the most tangible positive i am walking away with. I fully expect Specter to vote pretty much the way he always has, with maybe a tad more leaning with the DP, so I am hardly jumping for joy at his "changing sides" (in name only). But there's no pretty color the Republics[sic] can paint his defection and Snowe's follow-up admonishments.
I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.
when's she apologizing to Rush?
Right-wing extremists are destroying the GOP? Right-wing extremists ARE the GOP!
clearly obama inherited the financial crisis, economic crisis, automaker crisis, foreclosures and
unemployment. the right is trying very hard to control the BUSH legacy. they want to stop the dems.
and liberals from blaming BUSH. it's only been 100 days and they want to forget BUSH. we can't allow
that. it was 'clinton's fault' throughout the BUSH years. BUSH did a lot of damage with his neoCon/authoritarian rule. BUSH handed us a shxtty situation and it still smells.
...is right as far as that goes, but she doesn't address the 2 other 800 poud gorrilas in the room: The gorrila that stands only for the rich and privileged and is ready to commit any conceivable crime in order to advance their interests - ahead of the interests of the Nation and of all other people's and the gorrila that would destroy free democracy in order to live as a predatory and parasitical ruling elite.
The GOP is failing, because they enjoyed the most unfettered oportunity in their history to indulge their gorrilas' apetites. The GOP's most deeply cherished tenants are self-defeating and self-destructive. The greater the degree to which they can - free of any external restraints - indulge those tenants, they faster they are destroyed by that indulgance. They aren't going to rehabilitate themselves, because ..at this point, the GOP's entire creed is sociopathic at heart, attracting and retaining only sociiopathic personalities. Sociopaths never reform themselves, and perfectly applied sociopathy is always suicidal.
My concern is that the the migration of disaffected Republicans into the Democratic party is only going to drive the Democratic Party even further right and further corporatist than it already is, until it will resmeble the GOP of the Eisenhour era. But then again, with the GOP reduced to an irrelevent fringe organization of society's malignant, there will be more than enough room to grow a viable progressive/liberal, even dare I say it, socialism influenced third party.
I don't want to see the democratic Party shift any further to the right. It's already gone way to far in that direction.
The republicans will kill each other off by trying to constantly prove that they are the only true/real republicans by moving ever further right. The further right they go, the fewer people will make the trip with them. It's a good thing if you are not an extreme right wing nut job!
Open letter to Senator Snowe:
Dear Senator Snowe,
We as progressives could not agree more with your evaluation of the Republican Party. We understand your disappointment with the Party you have called your own for many years. We understand how it feels to have your Party get away from you and the issues that you have stood for for many years. You seem to understand the art of taking the middle ground. In other words we feel your pain. Having said that I would like to invite you to join the Democratic Party just as your colleague Arlen Spector did yesterday. We do not always see eye to eye but we welcome differing opinions in our Party. We could use your opinion on a variety of issues. We would welcome you with open arms. The Party that you have embraced for so many years does not care about you or your ideas anymore. The leadership in the Republican Party has morphed into the leadership of obstructionism and the whole country knows this. They do not deserve you. You are too good for them. The Republican Party takes orders from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. That is beneath you and we know it as well as you do. Come join us and see that we are the Party that cares about people and the country. We want to do the right thing for the country as a whole, not a select few. The only thing we need to know is if you would like to use the Mrs. or the Ms. on your nameplate.
Thank you for reading this,
Captain Kangaroo.
Rush is going to pissed at Olympia. Next thing you know, she'll change affiliations or at least become an Independent who will caucus with the Democrats. This is really getting good.
so at least she won't have to apologize.
Who can we get next?
Landrieu (Sp?) and Bayh to start acting like the Democrats they only pretend to be?
there's a good idea.
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
we find real Democrats to run against them?
The big tent party. Big circus tent that is, full of hate mongers, bigots, white supremacists, gun nuts, religious extremists, xenhophobes, homophobes, war mongers, teabaggers and other scary clowns.
who's driving the clown car? Or do they take turns?
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
It's not Rush or the rest of them couldn't get in.
... club Michael Steele with a stick. Rush's ass is big, but there's only so much room for the politicians who end up apologizing when they offendeth.
GOP eats their own.
In a Sept. 15, 1981 senate speech, Goldwater noted that Falwell's Moral Majority, anti-abortion groups and other Religious Right outfits were sometimes referred to in the press as the "New Right" and the "New Conservatism." Responded Goldwater, "Well, I've spent quite a number of years carrying the flag of the 'Old Conservatism.' And I can say with conviction that the religious issues of these groups have little or nothing to do with conservative or liberal politics. The uncompromising position of these groups is a divisive element that could tear apart the very spirit of our representative system, if they gain sufficient strength."
She writes in the Times about how the extremists are destroying the GOP, but every two years she comes home and supports those very same extremists when they run for state and local offices. Where was all this concern when she was hugging Chandler Woodcock and Carol Weston?
Funny how no one mentions the Xtian nationalist and their role in damaging the GOP.
So...with only 21% of the population identifying themselves in a poll as Republicans...does this mean that the GOP and the right wing believe that the total U.S. population consists of only 21% REAL Americans?
"Anyone that makes less than $150K in this country, has no business voting Republican."
Ask Michelle Bachmann
Damn it, how can you be a senator in a state as liberal as Maine and be a Republican?
The train is heading for the cliff. Jump, Olympia, jump!!!
We have is the fact that these people only care about getting elected. They don't care about whats good for the country, just what makes more money for them.
Can you show me anything in the last twenty years that was not designed to make someone that already has more then they need even richer at the expense of the have nots?
Party before country and making money before anything else.
that is the republican party!
I miss Margaret Chase Smith and other respectable Republicans.
Maybe we should build up the Green party.
So now it's the fault of those darn "rightwing" extremists. That's funny, used to be all of America's problems were caused by a)Hollywood Liberals, B)Dirty fucking hippies, c)America hating college professors, and D)Michael Moore (who's fat, by the way). Now that the reichwingers sweet dreams of an American free market empire have turned to shit, these "moderate" Republicans come out of the wood work to plead pathetically "It wasn't us, really! It was those bad, nasty, reichwing extremists"). I may be somewhat convinced of the "moderates" sincerity when they start reading the riot act to their party's propaganda arm, aka Fox News, but until that day comes, fuck them all. Oh, and I guess "The Club For Growth" is the GOP's new bogey man, sort of like a political Al Quieda.
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.
George Carlin
demonopolize it
I know the wingers didn't like him anyways but for McConnell and Steel to come out and smear Specter is low.
How bad will it be when even Gingrich may be considered moderate by these people?
Sounds good to me...
maybe this is the beginning of developing a 3 party system???
1)that is morel left, 2) one that is moderate in the middle and 3) one that is far right extremist.
maybe its a good thing...
