President Obama held a brief presser with the media and explained what happened on Christmas.

President Barack Obama asserted on Tuesday that the U.S. government had enough information to foil the attempted bombing on a Christmas Day airline flight but intelligence agencies "failed to connect the dots." Obama called that unacceptable and said, "I will not tolerate it."

"Our intelligence community failed to connect those dots which would have placed the suspect on the no-fly list," he said. "This was not a failure to collect intelligence, it was a failure to integrate and understand the intelligence that we already have."

Obama said that it was clear the government knew that the suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had traveled to Yemen and joined with extremists there.

"It now turns out that our intelligence community knew of other red flags that al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula sought to strike not only American targets in Yemen, but the United States itself. And we had information that this group was working with an individual ... who we now know was in fact the individual involved in the Christmas attack," he said.

As for the prison for terror suspects in Cuba, he said, "Make no mistake, we will close Guantanamo prison," Obama said. Guantanamo, he said, "was an explicit rationale for the formation of al-Qaida" operating in Yemen.

He kept it short and to the point and didn't take any questions from the media.

...we don't get to fly naked after all? (I'm disappointed)

...and why were no questions taken from "the media"? what about the sharp dressed man?

all over again.

guantanamo will (again)...be closed in a year.

Guantanamo, he said, "was an explicit rationale for the formation of al-Qaida" operating in Yemen.

Can't be said enough. Without the 'war on terror' we might have dealt with terrorism long ago. I'm not agreeing with everything, but I do believe Obama is taking a reasonable course.

new troops in the theater; drones bombing in Pakistan and Yemen - that should convince them Muslims Obama is on their side. Hell it already has convinced Cheney.

Wouldn't convince Cheney.

Who's side, exactly. is the 'intelligence community' on?

Wherever they lie, and whomever they're comprised of.

So close the dogmad thing already! 'Course, I dunno but it seems to me that if the **Commander in Chief** said to do something, and to do it right now, that thing is going to get done.

Start acting like a president, Mr. President.

it takes 60 votes to do anything.

It was a good idea to treat the Christmas bomber like a common criminal instead of giving him to the military. In this way, we WILL find out what really happened.

And when the heads roll? Oh well, there is always real estate.

This is good news from the President.

The GOP will use it to harp on big, broken government... (has no business in health care or the TSA or...)

Wow, what a concept.
Remember Bush? Nothing ever wrong. They never accepted responsibility for anything. Katrina? Good Job Brownie...
Condi on being questioned? "Are you questioning my veracity?"
"Bush: I've Made No Mistakes Since 9/11"

So for Obama to do this is a good thing. But I can't wait for the wingnuts - "Damaging to America", "How dare..." blah blah blah

Change the channel, don't go. But don't tell me how or what to think.

The right wing bedwetters will be all over this one, claiming that closing Guantanamo is yielding to terrorist demands.

Obama approved every one of Chimpy's war appropriations bills when he was a Senator...

remind the right wingers that the war in Afghanistan has only gotten bigger since Obama entered office...

remind those right wingers that the pentagons bloated budget has not shrunk one bit since he took office...

remind them that Obama and Hillary have threatened Iran several times...(that'll shut em' up!)

Hmm, sound familiar? Dear Mr. Obama, there was NO failure to connect the dots or failure to understand the inteligence. Letting the underpants bomber on the plane was a deliberate plot by the powers that be to ruin you and your party. They also "failed to connect the dots" so that bunnypants could launch his heroic, illegal bloody wars so he could "protect us"!

Their homeworld was a place called Earth, located in an uninteresting part of the galaxy. They had an expression: pride goeth before a fall. Their pride was their undoing. I know. I was there....They did not listen, of course. Arrogant men never do.

On NBC News tonight, Chuck Todd "reported" that the Underwear Bomber case has resulted in greater scrutiny of detainees from Yemen, and "probably" means Gitmo "probably won't be closed for another two years."

I'm curious what information he received to justify such a claim? Or do we now allow commentators to simply pull crap out of their ass and repeat it as truth on the network news?

No he won't. He'll never close Gitmo./s
What would all the Faux employees here do if he did?
I don't know why, but right now I'm hearing this.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

calgarylady's picture

I hope you're right about Obama closing Gitmo, mudshark, but I'm still very skeptical.

We shall see what happens.

could you be any more full of shit?

"We will close Gitmo"

how many more Friedman Units do we need to give you to live up to this campaign promise?

"Make no mistake, we will close Guantanamo prison," Obama said. Guantanamo, he said, "was an explicit rationale for the formation of al-Qaida" operating in Yemen.

Isn't this interesting? Based on everything else this president has said, I almost thought this was an Onion article. I'll bet that the two Gitmo detainees that were released under **** to Yemen were originally innocent. After being illegally detained for years and most likely tortured, anyone, even mother theresa, would have worked to seek justice.
