Purging of the Voting rolls has begun! Blocking Voters Appear Illegal
By John Amato Thursday Oct 09, 2008 8:00amAnd so it begins.
Tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law, according to a review of state records and Social Security data by The New York Times.
The actions do not seem to be coordinated by one party or the other, nor do they appear to be the result of election officials intentionally breaking rules, but are apparently the result of mistakes in the handling of the registrations and voter files as the states tried to comply with a 2002 federal law, intended to overhaul the way elections are run.
Still, because Democrats have been more aggressive at registering new voters this year, according to state election officials, any heightened screening of new applications may affect their party’s supporters disproportionately. The screening or trimming of voter registration lists in the six states — Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina — could also result in problems at the polls on Election Day: people who have been removed from the rolls are likely to show up only to be challenged by political party officials or election workers, resulting in confusion, long lines and heated tempers.
Some states allow such voters to cast provisional ballots. But they are often not counted because they require added verification...read on
Republicans know that when mistakes are made they always hurt the Democratic Party. That's just a fact.
Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio seem to be improperly using Social Security data to verify registration applications for new voters.
In addition to the six swing states, three more states appear to be violating federal law. Alabama and Georgia seem to be improperly using Social Security information to screen registration applications from new voters. And Louisiana appears to have removed thousands of voters after the federal deadline for taking such action.

i can't handle another 2000/2004. go obama!
The technology for stealing elections was perfected last century in South and Central America. Those skills are now being applied within our own country. By limiting the vote of the many, the votes of the few are magnified and the haves and the have mores rule despite being so few in numbers. Expect contested elections. Expect "spontaneous" public demonstrations in support of the theft. Expect cases to go to courts that will support the theft. The real question is what can be done about it? Go Obama! Go people for Obama! Working together we can not be defeated!
I love the wording...is it breaking the law or not? We all know the law is being broken up front, and in our faces. This election is not going to be close, so the normal routes for voter fraud are not going to work. This is the new format for the GOP.
Anyone says differently is unable or unwilling to print what we all know. They're trying to steal another one.
This may force Bush's hand on that whole suspending elections thing, eh?
at least a 5% margin to be out of Diebolding range.
We can all thank Karl Rove, who took voter suppression to a whole ... 'nother ... level!

wow, that site has yet to make me laugh.
you can always tell what the Republicans are doing...if they say the Democrats are doing something it's what they're doing...they say the Democrats are committing voter fraud that means they're committing voter fraud. they say the dems are lying that means they're lying.
crooks and liars indeed
Since the smears aren't working and the polls are dropping for McCain I guess rigging the votes is the next step for the republican party.
If you cant win an election with the support of the voters then you just have to steal it.
ADD THE SOLUTION TO THIS POST PLEASE---> there are websites to check if you are registered .... people should begin checking themselves
Put in my data, and nothing happened. Did it twice...nothing happened. No "Yes, you're registered," and no, "Sorry, you're not in our database."
i checked my status, and found the search would only work by entering my last name alone, in which everyone with my name came up. any additional data seemed to confuse the thing. just mentioning.
everyone needs to start checking their status, so that a pattern can be recognized and resolved immediately if possible.
.. that's what I did ..
You can also vote early in some states, I did it yesterday. It beats standing in line and if there is a problem, you have time to fix it. Also, I am so old I don't dare buy green bananas, should I expire, my vote will stand.
From the inciting of violence to this, it's clear that we have no protection or lawfulness in this country at all.
OT but breaking: This is a must see - Huffpo has tape of McGambler during one of his gambling explosions.

fool me...you can't get fooled again!
I think we've got the GOP running scared now.......GOOD! How anybody can believe in this party after the last 8 years is beyond my understanding. I think that we now have found the missing link that ties neanderthals to modern humans. It's the Republican base.
There is an episode of "Brotherhood" second season, in which the main
character pulls out the caging lists, vote scaring, and poll closing.
...follow up on this sort of crap. We cannot become complacent after the election just because we won. Election reform has to be addressed in a serious way, including the antics above and voting machines and caging, etc.
Get your John McCain NOPE T-Shirts & Stickers today!
Obama, Clinton, Biden, Dean, all of them have learned the lessons of the Kerry campaign. They just have more intelligence than to communicate directly to the McCain campaign what they are doing.
Well, John, don't you have some contacts in the business, say Keith or Rachel or somebody who could be sure to give this story some daylight on TV? And, maybe Keith and Rachel and even Tweety (who has recently been working pretty hard for the Dems) could have a reminder on their shows every night for newly registerd voters to make sure they contact the people in their district to check and be ceratin they've not been expunged...!
As if we didn't already have enough prima facie evidence, here's more of the results of their "domestic terror breeding grounds" aka McCain/Palin hate rallies.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/09/mcca...
It's time for the media to stand up to this level of criminal behavior or be considered to be "condoning it by tacit approval".
This country is in serious trouble right now while McCain attempts to ramp up the domestic terrorism agenda by his and Palin's hate-filled rhetoric.
Last time I checked, this was completely illegal according to the Patriot Act - Inciting to violence in the public square.
Where are the handcuffs? Oops....I forgot the highest law enforcement officer in Lee County Florida was "aiding and abetting" himself...oops!
The best way to draw attention is bring on the lawsuits. If your vote is suppressed, complain that they stopped you from voting for McShame. Just this of how that must burn Rove if he heard that...
I'll have to remember that and pass that idea around.
See if they give you a ballot after that...
here's the email address for the County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida where their sheriff stood before the crowd in uniform with intention to incite to violence. Death threats ensued and no one was cuffed.
This is derelection of duty by a uniformed officer under the Patriot Act as well as his personal contribution to "aid and abet violence in the public arena".
This man needs to be relieved of his duties immediately. This is a national embarrassment. Here's the address to send your emial requests for his removal from office.
questions@leegov.com
He's already cost this county $300,000 because he violated the Hatch Act but now it's time to go after the morals clause in his contract.
I can tell you exactly how this election is going to go.
A lot of Republicans are looking at the economy and are rightfully frightened. They hate the idea of voting for a black man; but, they know that McCain and Palin are incapable of fixing the problem. The solution to their problem is simple... STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY. This way they do not have to vote for a black man or a corporate criminal that will make the economic problems worse.
With the new registrations in almost every state equalling a 3:1 or 5:1 ratio of new Democrats versus Republicans, there is no way this will amount to anything more than a pisshole in the snow.
Of course, this doesn't address the sheer illegality of what they're trying to do which is being stopped abruptly with criminal charges against the RNC. Throw the book at them. They stole the election, with the help of Diebold and Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio and ran the actual tabulations through an RNC server in Chatannoga, Tenn - this we know.
It's time to slap these criminals into prison for the rest of their lives.
and national numbers are 27% Republican; 36% Democrat (and rapidly rising) and about 37% Independent (leaning democrat). The polls are actually much higher than they appear when you factor in Independent voters. I'd say when you factor this in as well as young new voters who use cell phones, Obama has a handy double digit lead.
This news is not new. I mentioned this story a few times in open threads a while ago. Maybe C&L was just waiting for Democracy Now to validate the story:

The right is pushing its plan to steal the election.
other wise those Republicans are going to crook another US election.
10/9: Gallup Pres-Tracker: Obama 52%, McCain 41%
10/9: Hotline/Diageo Pres-Tracker: Obama 47%, McCain 41%
10/9: Rasmussen Pres-Tracker: Obama 50%, McCain 45%
10/9: Res. 2000 Pres-Tracker: Obama 51%, McCain 41%
10/9: Zogby Pres-Tracker: Obama 48%, McCain 44%
-----------
Hotline/Diageo and Zobby only had a 1% difference yesterday. Stop the panic.
Of course this is Republican originated. They're already doing voter caging here in Florida. That's Republican election strategy - Voter suppression, voter fraud, voter disenfranchisement, voting privatization (Diebold), Jerrymandering, etc. It's going to be ugly.
All they need to do is make you think the race is close (via the MSM and controlled polling) and they'll have a plausible reason for why Obama lost well enough so as not to inspire any real inquiry into the fraud. The fix is in. Why do you think they pulled an active duty regiment out of Iraq to train for domestic "civil unrest" duties last month? They're expecting this.
"Tens of thousands of eligible voters..."
How do you know they are all eligible?
The elligiblity requirement for voting is citizenship and filling out a registration form. Most states take away the right to vote during the period of punishment for a felony; IE during probation, during parole, or during incarceration. These caging lists are NOT coming from the social security office or the local District Attorney's Office. They are being made up by private corporations. You have to understand, even homeless people have a legal right to vote. They did away with the property requirement to vote in the early 1800s. These lists are mostly geared towards black, hispanic, and white low income communities. It is a felony to create caging lists that target a certain kind of community. This is crime. You should be angry, ashamed of your country, and outraged.
The eligibility requirement is more than that. You also have to live in the district you are registering in. My fiance just moved from NY to NJ and as the states don't check each other's registrations a person who knew she moved could vote for her in NY while she voted in NJ!
I've run registration drives and know homeless people have the right to vote as long main area they inhabit is in the district they register. And let me be clear I WANT PEOPLE TO VOTE. I just don't people voting more than once and clearing the voter rolls is important to stop fraud.
What I am saying is that lists become less accurate over time and the story makes no statement about how they KNOW, not think, that the names being removed are actually eligible voters. Some are probably dead, others may have moved, etc.
"Under federal law, election officials are supposed to use the Social Security database to check a registration application only as a last resort, if no record of the applicant is found on state databases, like those for driver’s licenses or identification cards.
The requirement exists because using the federal database is less reliable than the state lists, and is more likely to incorrectly flag applications as invalid. Many state officials seem to be using the Social Security lists first."
What part of illegal don't you get?
I've seen people try to vote illegally. It is a crime but yet there are political organizations that try to "stuff the ballot box" anyway.
So even though it's illegal it does happen. And I am saying that, at least in NJ, the lists we have are terrible. There are people who have been dead for six years that are still on the rolls. They won't be removed until they haven't voted in two consecutive presidential elections. Now if some guy walks into the polling place claiming to be this deceased person there is NOTHING to stop them from voting.
The only way to stop this is to sue to remove the name of the deceased from the voter roll. How do you that some of the names that are being removed don't fall into this case?
Voter suppression, along with Diebold rigging and other rightwing shenanigans should give McCain a win - or at least a small enough margin that the Republicans will immediately contest the election. I will be surprised if the election is actually decided on Nov 8.
At least this time the Dems seem to be on the "voter suppression" case in some areas:
http://missoulian.com/articles/2008/10/09/new...
McCain's sleazy campaign is backfiring even among the military. Obama's soaring now.

"Tens of thousands of eligible voters..."
How do you know they are all eligible?
Who said "all?" Reading comprehension is an important step to understanding the world around you.
I think we'd all agree the ones who are not eligible voters SHOULD be removed from the voter rolls. It's the one who are eligible and are being removed that are at issue. So what I wrote was how do you know these tens of thousands are ALL eligible.
So smart guy how do you?
I don't. How could i?
My point is that the number of people registered in two places is minuscule compared to the number of eligible voters who are going to find out on election day that they can not vote.
How many people do you honestly think are going to be running from state to state on election day to stand in line and vote again and again?
Now, how many are going to be denied their right to cast a vote?
Put things in proportion and tell me you think your fears of some people voting more than once are more concerning than a whole lot of people being disenfranchised.
She's registered in, like, 4 or 5 counties now, isn't she?
IOKIYAR.
I guess america truly has become a banana republic(the country, not the retail store). It's sad that voters seem to get dropped from the voting rolls for the smallest reason, wether real or made up.
What John McCain's "familiars" have failed to realize is that the Dems are totally ready for this fight and will not be taken as they were in 2000 by Katherine "fake titties" Harris and in 2004 by Kenneth "McDiebold" Blackwell.
We can only hope...
Lets see here... At the McCain/Palin rallies they are all good with letting people shout out things like "kill him" & "terrorist". Do you actually think screwing with the actual voting is something these people are not considdering as a last ditch attempt to win?
btw... found a great "Im moving to canda if Palin win's T-Shirt -

that every 18 year old U.S. Citizen registers to vote at a certified voter registration facility. Register once and your set for life.
You get a LEGAL Voter ID and that settles it. Simple, nothing to hide,
show up and punch buttons.
Sadly voter drives in this political climate causes way to may complications and problems.
And of course the old problem remains people don't like to be told what to do.
Seriously it's not like your going down to the Draft Board to potentially sign your life away to the Military.
Republicans are twisting democracy into George Orwell's "Animal Farm" democracy wherein all voters are equal, but some voters are more equal than others.
The systems broken. The technology is out of date, nothing matches, nothing is verifiable, id theft is reaching plague levels, no one knows what they are doing, who's in charge, it's a mess.
What the Republicans are doing is despicable, but they have been doing these things for a very long time. They talk about voter fraud and can roll out a few examples maybe 20 or 30 nation wide and the general public doesn't get that election fraud is stealing elections. Of course in my opinion all this could be nullified with just a minimal effort now by the millions of voters that will lose their vote in the coming election. The lazy and easily distracted American voter needs to be treated like a 3 year old and I have never understood why. Take care of your own vote now before its too late to do anything about it.
Americans have become so used to comfort, easy, and instant it's no wonder we're collapsing into a useless heap of non productive consuming automatons at the mercy of the change makers and ground breakers be it positive or negative.
Crumbling infrastructures, no new business being created, no oversight or regulation, etc, etc.
Without initiative and will we're screwed.
i hope people take advantage of early voting. i plan on voting early.
Ok, so Obama will win by 10% instead of 20%. We can live with that.
The tsunami of DemocratIC voters will overwhelm their water-pistol tactics.
btw..
Rush Limbaugh's head is exploding today as he is desperately trying to throw everything out there but the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, he tries to do it all in one sentence. Think Sean Hannity on steroids with a lit firecracker up his ass.
Repubs must be so proud, knowing their party constantly tries to deny citizens the right to vote. I guess they sleep contented knowing GOP operatives are using technicalities to disenfranchise the poor.
Lovely democracy ya got there, America.

Obama's got this election won. The only thing in his way is if somebody steals it from him. Instead of focusing on Obama, perhaps it's time to refocus our efforts on making sure the vote ISN'T stolen!

1. You have a right to cast a ballot if you are a valid registered voter (meaning you are a US citizen, who is a resident in this state, who is at least 18 years old and not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony and who is registered at his or her current residence address).
2. You have a right to case a provisional ballot if your name is not listed on the voting rolls.
3. You have the right to cast a ballot if you are present and in line at the polling place prior the the close of the polls.

What can we do to fight this?
Did you think replacing all those Attorney Generals was just for political favors?
Sure, they're changing their articles of incorporation and name so the criminals can hide a bit longer. It won't work. The whistleblowers on the inside are spilling the beans and heads are going to roll on what they did in Ohio in 2004.
These criminals can run but they cannot hide from the american people. We'll find them wherever they are.
People who are kept from voting should burn the polling place to the ground on the exact same night this will keep any votes from leaving the place until a federal authority can sort through the mess and it might get rid of a few of the culprits.
We, the people, will do whatever it takes to protect what has distilled down to perhaps our very last inalienable right under this constitution - the right to vote and to have our vote counted honestly.
We need to do whatever it takes to preserve and protect this right even if it actually means "hand counted paper ballots". We did it once and we can do it again. Demand it - or demand an absentee ballot.
These Diebold, Sequoia, and ES & S machines were designed with an intentional vulnerability to hackers and the RNC got in the back door on it.
The RNC and their corrupt lobbyists actually used the handicap lobbies (paid them megabucks) to pass the HAVA act which was a total sham because all that's required in a voting precinct is "one touch screen voting machine"; instead, the pigs in congress mandated that every machine be a touch screen machine without a paper trail. The successful hacks on these machines can be found at:

TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TODAY AND DEMAND HAND COUNTED PAPER BALLOTS!
and we know about those RNC servers in the bank building in Chatanooga, Tennessee which Kenneth Blackwell of Ohio and Bush and Cheney and the RNC had set up to divert the tallying of votes in Ohio in 2004 so that they could tamper with them at the RNC server. The entire RNC should be sued by the people for infringement of this constitutional right of the people. We know who they are. The whistleblowers are singing. They will not escape the long arm of the law if it takes decades to bring each of them to justice and there is much work being done right now to solidify The People Vs. Kenneth Blackwell.
The RNC and Karl Rove are working on doing this again - in another state - another town. Perhaps they will have operatives in each state this time? If they do tamper with our election again, they will only succeed in making one things occur: The total collapse of this country.
Bush and Cheney have gamed the system already beginning with the financial collapse....this will take the country down completely if we permit this to occur.
offering big rewards for whistleblowers might help expose the problem and might also discourage thieves from completing their efforts.
If they do it again, it is to the streets. We cannot allow that fat assed pig, KKKarl Rove, do this to our nation. The firing of the US Attorneys and appointing political hacks from Liberty University is all part of this scheme. We must all stand up and demand better. If they steal another election, it is time to bear those arms the wingnuts talk about all the time.
Stop complaining about it and do something: The heads of the affected state's Democratic and Independent parties need to come together and jointly file a suit in a sympathetic Federal Court on grounds of violations ofvoting rights act, civil right, etc, in order to obtain a federal court order to cease and desist and reinstate purged rolls. Concurrently, they need to investigate whatever remedies are avAilable to them in criminal courts and file charges with the states attorneys general, election tampering, whatever.
"sympathetic Federal Court"
You mean there are federal courts that are hostile to Voting rights?
I know there are in, let say Paraguay, Guatemala, Tajikistan, Yemen...but here too?
Remember that the Senate race is much closer in places than the presidential race. Obama -may- have a tamper-proof victory (depending on how blatant the tampering is) but there's more to it than that. The Democrats actually have a shot at achieving a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. The Republicans are already shitting bricks over this idea, and will do everything they can to stop it from happening. It will be much easier for the Red-publicans to manipulate the Senate race results: they're not as closely watched, many people don't even know they're happening until they reach the poll booth, and they don't grab headlines like the presidential race does.
Let's watch the senate races just as closely as the presidential one.
Tell voters to Check to make sure they are registered to vote at their voter registration office! The GOP is reducing the voter registration rolls.
Obama or the DNC will have to look into this and maybe file lawsuits. They definitely need the press to report on this. Right now many of the newly registered democratic voters are being kicked off the voter rolls in the battleground states. Democrats Need to come up with a battle plan and action to defeat this threat.
I've thought about it long & hard and tried to view it from both sides. Going back to compulsory voting is the thing to do.
If everyone is on the list (unaffiliated with a party btw) there are no purges, there are no contests at the booth. There is no intimidation etc etc.
I also think it is about time that America stoppeds just talking about being the greatest democracy on Earth and started got back to being one. Check Wikipedia. The US has an average of a 54% turnout. Thats the second lowest value of all democratic states. Not something to be proud of.
=my2c
BC
Whoops! I take that back. The US never had compulsory voting. I misread wikipedia. I blame lack of coffee at the time.
However, that doesn't change the point! Compulsory voting! No purges! No intimidation! Accurate results!
The Detroit News and Free Press (one and the same!) are reporting the state's response. In a nutshell, they're claiming the NYT sources are wrong.

Let see if they claim the same before a judge in a court of law. *evil grin*
If the Cons steal this election I will openly advocate civil war!!!
The only silver lining in this cluster(&ck is the fact that the Obama machine seem well equipped to handle these "problems.
Still, we NEED a federal voter registry that is far removed from the political parties. This is a disgrace in a country that pride itself to be the beacon of democracy.
If I may, let me relate my experience when i lived in Canada. At the federal level, people of all walks of life go DOOR TO DOOR several months before the election, or every 4 years (IIRC). when they register you, they give you a certification that you can bring to the polls. Mistakes are quite rare, the Federal election commission is run by civil servants (not appointees tyvm!) and poll workers can call a central database for verification. Plus, the municipalities do not have to shoulder the cost of having machines, store them and all that trouble that add to their already strained budget.
I mean, you value the vote, or you don't. It's that simple.
Obama is the exact reason why wee have a 2nd amendment. We are going to end up using it to defend the constitution from this piece of filth.
It sounds like the shit could hit the fan for Obama's campaign after this all comes out in the news over the next few days!
I am waiting to hear from Sen. McCain on election fraud and hope he will warn his supporters to remain faithful and free of shame. I would like to hear him say that, even in the event fraudulent voters deny him the presidency, he would rather lose honorably than win fraudulently. I am still a patriot who believes America is still the Beautiful.
OMG,
the democrats are cheaters and it's the republicans that are the crooks? what a bunch of nuts!
I just saw a report on CNN and there does seem to be widespread problems with the ACORN voter registrations. Maybe people were paid based on the number of registration they submitted and falsified a bunch to up their paycheck. I don't know. This is troubling though.
